Mac mini 2011 freezes on memory test 12
My mini was powered off for three days recently and upon startup it wouldn't boot (apple logo screen with spinning wheel followed momentarily by a status bar buildin on the bottom before it powers itself off).
Suspecting a file system or HD error I tried to use Disk Utility to verify and repair the disk. Each attempt ended in an error message.
I then tried to run the AHT to verify if there were any HD or other hardware level problems. I ran the default set of tests which progress fine up to the point that the system froze at memory test 12. I rebooted the mini and ran just the memory test and it froze at the same test (the clock stayed at the time for several hours). Is this indicative of a memory problem, motherboard problem, or logic board problem?
Also notable, I have noticed recently that there are times when the fan runs at a very high speed even when the system wasn't in use (the the room temp is normal). After rebooting the fan speed returns to normal. And, there have been three instances in the last two weeks where the system has restarted itself during the night.
Any guidance on logical troubleshooting strategies would be appreciated.
No dust...very clean inside.
Swapped the memory (with original Apple memory)....no change
Tried fsck in single user mode...no luck...error code 8. What does that mean?

Mac Mini 2011 boot camp freezes on loading windows screen.
I bought my mac mini 2011 server, have upgraded it to mountan lion and mountain lion server and wanted to install windows on it. I have microsoft windows 7 professional OEM system builder edition on a dvd, a LG portable super multi blue rewriter, a corded mac keyboard with number pad, a HP mouse, and a hdmi monitor. I have not upgraded any features on the mac, it is original.
I updated all software, well except a printer driver that I don't have the printer of anymore, and ran boot camp. I tried to partition my entire hard drive for it, however that did not work. I then tried to partition half of the first hard drive and that did not work either. I tried unpluging the mouse and keyboard and it still won't work. I bought the copy off of amazon and it appears to be legal. I just always get stuck on the "Windows is loading" screen. The loading bar, a white band across the bottom of the screen, always goes across the whole screen once fast, then makes it's way to the farther left side of the screen and then hangs there indefiniteley.
Any suggestions? more questions about the situation?Mini mini, there are problems with mini and esp. server version.
What I think others have said: cannot use OS X Server, had to use Mac OS X client
External LG is not supported. Doesn't come with an internal SuperDrive though does it?
The system builder is fine.
Just one story (there are others, I need to collect all the "Mac Mini Tips" together, I can't remember and keep them straight otherwise.
HDMI audio in Windows 7 64 bit
reinstalled the Intel video drivers and audio worked immediately.
My config: 2011 Mac Mini 2.3, Intel 3000HD video
. . upgrade to 8GB ram
Samsung 8000 series LED TV connected with HDMI
Memorex external BluRay writer(USB only power)
After partitioning drive with boot camp and reboot, install Windows 7 with install wizard.
When asked whether to allow automatic updates say 'no', then complete installation and run boot camp tools for Windows.
Because the network driver gets installed prior to the Intel video driver, Windows will install the Windows Update Intel video driver which breaks HDMI audio.
When auto updates are off, the Intel video driver that is correct gets installed last.
HDMI audio works with this driver.
Apple should install the Intel video driver first and it would solve this problem.
I now have full blown 3D BluRay support on the MacMini with TruHD audio, fantastic!

- There are other stories where Microsoft Windows will automatically install video drivers (iMac) and cause trouble. Sometimes in an innocuous security patches rolled out monthly Tuesday. -
Mac Mini (2011) can't boot, no screen display.
Hi, my mac mini (2011) finally won't startup today.
It was since two weeks ago, the mini goes freeze very frequently, I discovered that the fan speed was always below 2000rpm, meantime, the CPU temp was around 80-90 degree, it is around 25 degree in the room, last Friday I installed a software named smcfancontrol, which can manually speed up the fan, and it seems better, and the computer runs faster, I think the CPU is running in full speed.
Today, I opened a video to watch, after about ten minutes, the computer goes freeze again, and of course I force powered it down by pressing the power button on the back, then the tragic came:
- when I try to boot up the machine, the front light turns on, then off with a "ka" sounds like the hard drive shutting down(force powering it down)
- after around two seconds, the light goes on again, and the fan smoothly goes to full speed, there is nothing shows up on screen, as well as no apple boot up sound.
- I tried to reset smc (power down, unplug power cable, wait 15 seconds, plug in power cable, wait 5 seconds, power on), no luck.
- I tried to reset pmu (at least internet says it's pmu, it seems apple website did not mention how to reset pmu on mac mini, power down, hold power button for five seconds, power on), no luck
- I also tried to unplug the memory, try with every single one to boot, no luck
- last Friday, when I can still boot up the computer, I thought there might too much dust, I removed the fan and cleaned it up, it looks a small piece of plastic on the fan plug were damaged, but the smcfancontrol app still can control its speed, therefore I think the fan is OK.
- during many retry, there was one time, the fan goes full speed at startup, with no front light off,(my current status is fan goes to full speed gently).
- the computer is connected with an AV amplifier, then output to a plasma TV, when the computer is powered off, the TV displays a background of amp, when I startup the computer, although no video output from computer, the TV goes to a "No Signal" status, I dont's think this is related to my problem.
the computer is out of warrentee, but bought only for less than two years... I really want it back to work, can someone help me? many thanks!
wish you all have a good day.Hard to troubleshoot when you can't turn on the computer on any more. One option is to bring it to an Apple store to have them look at it. They will tell you what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix. I have never heard of them charging for a diagnostic and an estimate.
If your CPU was running hot all the time and your fan had small plastic pieaces, in my opinion, something got fried. The mini is so compact, that the excessive heat may have also over heated your hard drive causing thd "ka" sound.
If you decide to continue in to use a Mac Mini as a media server, may I would suggest using iStat to monitor it. I use iStat on my 2011 Mac Mini Media Server to monitor CPU usage, all sensors, and internet incoming and outcoming. -
Mac Mini 2011 screen blacks out during heavy screen activity
I have a Mac Mini 2011 i5 2.3Ghz with Intel HD video. It's connected to a 30" LCD 2560x1600 (Dell WFP3008) via mini-DP to DP cable and a 22" LCD 1920x1080 (Samsung LCD TV) via HDMI to HDMI cable.
For the first few weeks I had it connected to the 30" only and it was fine. Then I hooked up the Samsung as a second display and the problems started.
The problem is that the Dell blacks out briefly, then comes back. It is not "drawing" the screen black, the signal to the Dell gets disrupted momentarily so the monitor has no signal so it goes black. Then it resyncs with the signal and the display is back. This only happens to the Dell, during the disruption, the Samsung image stays put. I know it is a signal disruption because the Dell shows a displayport icon showing that it has just resynced to that input.
The problem happens more frequently when more things are going on; like if I have a window or multiple windows playing video, then the disruption happens more. If I disconnect the Samsung, it happens less. It could even happen if a web browser window taking up a large portion of the 30" screen does a full page update, it will disrupt. If I am running Adobe Lightroom, it seems to happen more also.
When it happens it seems like messages like this appear in the console, although i can't say they are directly correlated:
6/1/12 8:28:46.000 PM kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero
I'm thinking perhaps the mini is running low on memory since the 2560x1600 is pretty high res and then add the 1080p screen and stuff being updated, perhaps it runs out of memory and disrupts the signal while it garbage collects? Pure speculation.
Has anybody else seen this and have any clues on how to resolve it? Thanks.I should clarify that when I say perhaps the mini is running low on memory, I mean low on shared video memory, since the computer has 16GB installed. I'm not sure how to view or test shared video memory allocation.

How to create bootable USB thumb drive from Lion on Mac Mini 2011?
Hello folks
Yesterday my new Mac Mini (Core i7 2,7 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD6630M 256 MB) arrived. It replaces my old Mac Mini (Core Duo 1,83 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, Intel GMA950 64 MB). One day I'll replace the 500 GB 5400 RPM HDD in this Mini by an Intel SSD drive (just like I did with my previous Mini). I'll do a fully clean install then (formatting the SSD drive in Disk Utility and then installing Lion on it from a bootable USB thumb drive). The only problem is I can't seem to download Lion for free from the Mac AppStore (MAS) although I have bought a new Mac Mini which came with Lion pre-installed. I know how to create a bootable USB thumb drive with Lion on it when you download it from the MAS. But that's the problem... I can't seem to download Lion from the MAS for free. When I open the MAS while holding down the Option key I can download Lion but it will charge me for it. Is there any way I can download Lion from the MAS without paying for it? Since it already came with my new Mac Mini 2011 this should be possible I guess?
And will I still be able to download the iLife '11 apps (iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband) for FREE that came with my new Mac Mini when I do a fully clean install as described above? Thanks in advance.
Greetings
JocauAfter doing some research, it seems that there are only 2 WAYS to do a complete reinstall of Lion on the Mac Mini 2011 without paying for the Lion download in the Mac AppStore (i.e. recreating every partition, also the Recovery HD partition, from scratch e.g. when installing Lion on a clean HDD/SSD).
1) COMPLETELY clone the Mac Mini 2011 HDD including all of its partitions to an external drive and restore it when you want to do a complete reinstall.
2) Use the LION INTERNET RECOVERY feature built-in into new Macs that ship with Lion (this feature is present in new Macs starting from the Mac Mini 2011 and Macbook Air 2011).
OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery
Lion Internet Recovery
If you happen to encounter a situation in which you cannot start from the Recovery HD, such as your hard drive stopped responding or you installed a new hard drive without Mac OS X installed, new Mac models introduced after public availability of OS X Lion automatically use the Lion Internet Recovery feature if the Recovery HD (Command-R method above) doesn't work. Lion Internet Recovery lets you start your Mac directly from Apple's Servers. The system runs a quick test of your memory and hard drive to ensure there are no hardware issues.
Lion Internet Recovery presents a limited interface at first, with only the ability to select your preferred Wi-Fi network and, if needed, enter the WPA passphrase. Next, Lion Internet Recovery will download and start from a Recovery HD image. From there, you are offered all the same utilities and functions described above.
As with the Recovery HD, reinstallation of OS X Lion from Lion Internet Recovery requires an Internet connection. See "Supported network configurations and protocols" below.
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion
If you reinstall Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion installed, on an erased or replaced hard drive, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start from Lion.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to compete installation of your applications.
Source: Lion Recovery
It's a bit sad that these seem to be the only 2 options. Lion Internet Recovery is the preferred one here since my monthly internet traffic limit isn't a problem (but my download speed is). This problem could have been easily solved by Apple by just checking the system specs or serial number when trying to download Lion from the Mac AppStore. By using one of the 2 options in my previous sentence the Mac AppStore could see that I have a new Mac Mini 2011 that ships with Lion which would give me the option to download Lion from the Mac AppStore for free and eventually create a bootable USB thumb drive of it. -
External iSight - no sound with Mac mini 2011
Hello,
I'm trying to connect External iSight camera to Mac mini 2011 (using FW400 -> FW800 adapter cable) but I can't get microphone sound to work...
When I open system prefs>sound>input, it shows iSight is connected but system will freeze for a while (like it's looking for iSight) on openning.
When I try open Skype video preferences, it shows me video from iSight with no problem, but sound doesn't work.
Can anyone give me some advice? You're welcome.
(1) Your new info indicates to me that there is probably something wrong with your cable(s), adapter(s), Mac mini's Firewire, or your external iSight itself.
You can eliminate most of these by troubleshooting with other cables, adapters, Firewire devices, and Macs as suggested in the info from my earlier link.
If no Firewire device you test on your Mac works with any connecting cable, resetting the Mac's Firewire bus may help. Apple's "how-to" article has been archived in this link. (This link may be slow to load.)
If you have trouble displaying the archive page, here is the pertinent extract on how to reset the bus:
... If the issue persists, try these steps:
Shut down the computer.
Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.
If an individual third-party device leads to the issue, contact the manufacturer for more information and further assistance.
NOTE: Some users who try FW reset forget that "all" cables include the power cable. Disconnecting power is important.
(2) If your troubleshooting shows that your external iSight itself is the problem, you can decide whether you want to have your old serviced. If you do not have access to a local Apple-Authorized Service Provider, you can obtain cost and Apple contact info from http://www.apple.com/support/isight/service/
(3) Rather than spend more money on your old iSight, you may decide to consider a new webcam. A new Mac compatible USB connected cam with a current warranty will be a faster fix, and it may be lower cost. Some examples are at http://mac-compatible-web-cam.com. Moreover, compatible USB connected cams are not subject to all the same conflicts that sometimes effect external iSight.
Unless you already have a separate microphone for your mini, you can decide whether to buy separate mic or look for a new camera that has an inbuilt mic.

Whew, that's too much info to digest, but possibly ApogeePopup is the problem, I lots of problems with that...

See if DU works this way... 10.7 or greater, reboot holding CMD+r keys & use Disk Utility from there for Repairing Drive.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode, like stalls, beachballs, etc...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts? -
Unable to Troubleshoot Power Issues on Mac mini 2011
I have been having odd and intermittent power issues with my Mac mini 2011 and could really use some help before I resign myself to taking it into an Apple Store. It's under warranty, but I now live in another country so I hope I don't need to ship it should it come down to that.
However, I have searched this topic a lot, and not only have I tried troubleshooting it, I haven't seen any power issues with other owners of this model. That leads me to think that the power supply itself is probably OK.
First of all, I live in China and the building I live in seems to have a questionable power supply. The air conditioner for example simply would not work and the repairman spent two hours messing around with wires inside the outlet and in the breakers. That did the trick, so I wonder if I'm simply not getting enough juice?
Main symptoms:
- My monitor recognizes an analog signal but will not light up (black monitor). Unplugging and replugging adaptor doesn't do anything.
- Startup Keyboard Commands (e.g. Cmmd-R) may work, but I can't tell because the monitor won't light up. Letting the computer boot up though I can hear keyboard volume keys and such making the standard sounds. I can usually restart using the keyboard too.
- My 2T external HD more often than not dismounts as well.
- I can't hear any computer activity after the chime (hard drive, etc.).
- Since I can hear the chime and there is audio feedback through the keyboard, I think that eliminates hardware problems such as logic board failure or bad RAM.
- I can't boot even if I unplug all USB peripherals.
- Holding down the power button (I have it set to make the computer sleep as well as shut down) often won't shut down the computer, but it seems to stay in sleep no matter how long I hold it. Unplugging the computer finally shuts it down, obviously.
- Unplugging and waiting 5 minutes or so and powering up again doesn't seem to make any difference, nor does switching sockets, plugging directly into the wall, etc.
Problems began about two weeks ago, got better, and then worse again. Now I'm just keeping the computer and monitor on (never sleep 24/7).
Miraculously, after much frustration and countless restarts, suddenly the screen will turn on to reveal a fully booted system that was running all along in the background. No startup screen- the monitor just magically comes on again. Often I find that my external has unmounted, but it's no big deal to get to remount. At this stage, the Mac is still very quiet and for a while the system is sluggish, though it hops back into action in 5 or 10 minutes.
At first I thought it was just my monitor, and though that's possible I suppose, it seems I'm just not getting enough juice. Once the monitor is on though, everything is fine: I can power it off and on with no problems. But I can't just leave my computer on forever though.
Any help appreciated.Well, with the other monitor (which did not work with the mini either but worked fine on a laptop), I was able to narrow the trouble spot down to either a faulty Mini Display to VGA adaptor or a damaged port. I could determine that all the other ports (incld. the USB drive, programs, internet, etc., were all working fine behind the big black GUI all through sound feedback, so I seriously doubted it could be a supply problem or a residential electric problem.
I took my mini and adaptor to a "Mac Shop" (reseller) here in China, and found it quite professional, just like a Mac Store. They tested my machine, and although they didn't have VGA monitors, they said I could return the new $30 USD adaptor if it didn't work. But as I'm writing this on the monitor now, the new adaptor did the trick.
The long and short of all this is that I've read a lot about display problems with the mini and I suspect that most of these problems are adaptor related. I myself tried to save some bucks by buying a third party plug and lived and learned. I hope the Apple adaptor works like a champ, and if it doesn't, I'll know the first thing to eliiminate next time. -
ROOTIN' TOOTIN' YOSEMITE MAC MINI 2011
Yosemite has darn near enough killed off the speed of my Mac Mini 2011 which was running along fine on Mavericks. I now get the spinning PIZZA WHEEL OF DEATH in darn near every application. Safari has become a joke where you would think I had returned to 56k modem land. I would like toknow if Apple geniuses are going to do something about this? I would not have downloaded and instaled Yosemite if I had not been encouraged to do so by Apple's Tech Specs on this page http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/how-to-upgrade/?cid=wwa-uk-kwg-mac-com, which states quite clearly Yosemite will work on:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminium, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Any solutions?

Intermittent slow or no boot mac mini 2011
Hi i have a mac mini 2011 base model, i upgraded the hdd to a crucial m4 128gb rev 0009, the ram from 2gb to 8gb and got a second hdd cable and put the original 500gb as second drive space (after erasing partitions and reformatting via usb). all was working well for a couple of months then all of a sudden it started to take 5+ mins to boot or not at all, just apple logo with spinning gear.
if i force power off and try again 9/10 it will boot fine second or third time (actually booting in 3-5 gear spins) but i have to do this all the time, it will not boot on first try.
first i tried resetting the PRAM and SMC no joy.
then i tried doing a recovery and erased the drive (SSD) and reinstalled Lion, still no joy
then i went into apple hardware diagnostics no errors repoted, i also did a memtest and hdd test (using remember and smart utility respetivly), also no errors
then i changed the ram back to the original 2gb still no joy
additional:
once the system has managed to boot it works flawlessly and very fast, if at this point i reboot or shutdown and power back on within 2 mins it boots up perfectly fine, if it is left off for more than say 10 mins i have to start the whole process of boot, wait 2-3mins (apple logo and spinning gear) hold power down until off and power back up (will boot after 2-3 times of doing this, then no problems until next time)
Please can ANYONE help me!!!!!! im at my wits end, im very tech savvy so any technicial answers / suggestions are fine.
i do hope someone can help!!
KirkI had a 'spinning beachball' issue with my Crucial M4 2.5" 256GB SSD, and found the following fix to be firmware related. NOTE: Do NOT update Firmware to the most recent version released 04/2012 (000F). Make sure to have your SSD backed up prior to update, unless of course you're trying to re-load.
========
The SSD firmware version is stored on the SSD itself so the upgrade does not need to be carried out on the system the SSD will be used in. The easiest way to upgrade the firmware is by connecting the SSD to a system that has a CD drive.
If this is not possible, you can follow these steps to create a bootable USB flash drive and upgrade the firmware from that.
1. Connect an empty USB flash drive
2. Download rEFIt-syslinux from the link below. This will allow your USB drive to be recognized as a startup volume by the Mac.
http://blog.io101.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/rEFIt-Syslinux.dmg_.zip
3. Mount the dmg. This will mount two volumes called 'rEFIt' and 'SYSLINUX'
4. Open a Terminal and take a note of which volume is which with the command <diskutil list>
e.g. /dev/disk1 for the USB drive and /dev/disk2 for the dmg
5. Unmount (NOT eject) both volumes, after you have confirmed the two new volumes (e.g. disk1 & disk2):
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2
You should get a message saying you were successful
6. Copy the dmg onto the USB drive:
dd if=/dev/disk2 of=/dev/disk1 bs=1m
You should get a message detailing the number of records in and out and number of bytes transferred
7. Eject both:
diskutil eject /dev/disk1
diskutil eject /dev/disk2
8. Unplug and plug back in the USB drive and mount the SYSLINUX volume
9. Download the firmware version 0309 for the M4 SSD here:
http://edge.crucial.com/firmware/m4/0309/Crucialm4_0309.zip
10. Unzip and mount the firmware ISO and go into the folder BOOT, then ISOLINUX
11. Copy the contents into the SYSLINUX volume
12. Delete the existing file syslinux.cfg and rename ISOLINUX.CFG to syslinux.cfg
13. Reboot your mac and hold the option key to select a boot volume and select the eEFIt volume, then choose the "Boot legacy OS SYSLINUX' option
14. Follow the instructions to update the firmware. -

Podcasts from Current Tv, since three weeks prior to the Nov 2012 election have had a url problem and cannot be played on my mac mini 2011 with 10.8.2 and the latest Itunes? anyone know why> ? I am in contact with Itunes now and they wanted screenshots of the problem, I can get these current tv episodes with a vpn and my isp says they are not blocking them, but i was surprised that prior to the election they were blocked, ?
I also can get them on my Android Samsung Galaxy note 2 with no problem but on the Macmini cannot>/? I Unsubscribed and subscribed many times but still no luck, any ideas? I am waiting for the senior advisor to get back to me on this issue. I am in THailand now where the problem is happening and as I said the ISP says they do not block any podcasts.I also do not want it on my iphone 5, so I have to wait and see why the mac mini is not getting it.I seem to have fixed it by putting <div class="clearfloat"></div> after the navigation bar?

Hello, I am interested in buying this week of a mac mini 2011 withintel graphics HD3000 but I'm not sure it looks good with my Samsung SyncMaster 933HD monitor. How would it look better.... with the hdmi-dvi connection built in, buying a HDMI 1.3 cable and HDMI-making or buying an adapter hdmi display port - vga and connected through the port thunderbolt
ThanksI originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

When I connect my Mac Mini 2011 with Lion to a TV via HDMI and an earphone cable is plugged in, it´s not possible to choose sound out via hdmi, as opposed to connection via the minidisplay port. Anybody knows how to fix this?
Was just on the phone with Apple about this.
The solution was as follows for me anyway...
Go to your Finder
Choose the Go Menu
Choose Computer
Choose your Macintosh Hard Drive
Choose your "Library" Folder
Choose the "Preferences" Folder
There should be a folder called "Audio"
Move that whole folder to the trash
Empty the Trash
Restart from the Apple Menu
When you are back up and running;
Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu
Choose Sound
In the output tab you should now be able to make the HDMI "Sticky"
Enjoy your sound over HDMI and no more dirty knees or broken backs unplugging the desktop speakers!

This is going to be a long one. I don't know what I did wrong. I have a trial version of aperture. I don't know if that means that it will cease to work after a period of time or what. I'm not proud to say that I downloaded it from a torrent site. Ok
