Mac Mini-A Huge Mistake!!!

i decided to try a mac mini and boy am i sorry. i have had it 2 days now and it hasn't worked properly yet. i purchased a model: mac mini 1.83/2x256/80/SD/AP/BT
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: Mac mini
Model Identifier: Macmini1,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2

Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MM11.0055.B08
SMC Version: 1.3f4
Serial Number: <edited by moderator>
Software:
System Software Overview:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167)
Kernel Version: Darwin 8.11.1
Boot Volume: Macintosh HD
i received it on 1/17/08 and hooked it up to my nice, brand new apple 30" display. as soon as i turned it on, i was directed to do software updates. i did them. no problems. then, i was ready to explore my new mac. i clicked on idvd. an error message popped up informing me that no dvd burner was present. i thought that was odd, as i know that i had just purchased a machine w/ a superdrive; at least that's what i paid for. i ran the system profiler and sure enough it stated that no disc burning devices were present. i looked at the model description on the bottom of the unit and noticed it had "SD" as part of the model. i assume that means superdrive. i loaded a dvd into the drive and could hear it spinning, but it was never recognized. since the drive wasn't present, i could not get the dvd to eject. i got on the apple support forum and found people having similar problems and someone suggested a reset procedure. i followed that and was able to get the system profiler to recognize the drive. i ejected the disc and inserted another. it was a store-bought movie. dvd player launched and started to play the movie. about 30 seconds into the movie, dvd player quit and ejected my disc. i checked the system profiler and the dvd drive had disappeared from the list once again. i also noticed that in the ata bus section, it stated that there were no ata devices either. i did another reset and was able to get the following info. although, this info disappeared again.
ATA Bus:
MATSHITADVD-R UJ-85J:
Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-85J
Revision: FEW7
Serial Number:
Detachable Drive: No

i tried another dvd with the same error, reset and eject procedure. i then thought that maybe the software updates that i had done when i first set it up had some compatibility problems w/ the dvd drive. i inserted the system restore disc and tried to revert back to the original configuration. the problem is: it won't restore from the disc and keeps trying to boot from it without success. and to top it off, i can't eject it. i'm not too pleased with my purchase and if anyone asked me what i think about apple computers right now...well let's just say that i wouldn't have nice things to say. (i'm trying to practice my anger management here, so i'm omitting the foul language.)
any ideas? anyone? help!!!

A glitch in the OS would not generally result in the exclusion of the device from the system profiler. While it is possible the drivers failed to load, the profiler queries the hardware in addition to MacOS, so the drive should appear. There are circumstances where components can 'vanish' as a result of the system management controller failing to function correctly, in which case an SMC reset would fix it. Since an Intel system is reset by disconnecting everything to take it in for service, the SMC reset has already been done, so it isn't that.
All in all, it sounds to me very much like a hardware issue, and I'm puzzled as to why it's taking so long to get it resolved. You commented previously that you blame Apple 100% for the problem, but the point is that in the 6 months that specific unit has been in the dealer channel, between coming off the production line and being sold to you as a 'closeout' item, there's no way to know what has happened to it, and who has done what. What we do know from the speed at which Leopard upgrade disks began to appear, and then Leopard itself began to be installed, in minis being sold, is that 6 months is a lot longer than most minis hang around in the supply chain, so that one has some history to it that may be very telling - but which sadly of course no-one but the dealer who sold it to you will know!
You also haven't mentioned with whom you are trying to get the problem resolved, and that may be quite important. It's hard to imagine Apple themselves being so reticent to fix it, and I must admit that my choice would have been to call them and report the problem, and have them arrange to ship it back to them. It generally take a tad longer to get it back from Apple in that situation, but it's more likely to be fixed - particularly when the fault is such a clear one as an optical drive which isn't being recognized.
Given you're dealing with a local shop, you might ask if, when they said the fault could not be replicated, they mean that the drive at that point was functional. An intermittent fault is far more likely to be cabling or something similar, or an SMC that functions correctly immediately after reset, but then fails subsequently. The latter would mean a new logic board.

  • How to remove Malware/adware from my mac mini which I downloaded by mistake?

Downloaded a malware/adware unknowingly when I wanted to download a videoplayer for my mac mini. Already tried doing a reinstall but the problem did not go a away. It hampers my web surfing. I'm using Google Chrome. Please advice.

    Here are places to check:
-System Preferences/Accounts/ -> click your account on the left. Click login items at the top and see if there are any items you wish not to start up on launch.
-In Google Chrome you can go to the settings area and it will show you extensions. If there is an ad extension, you will be able to disable it.
-In Safari, fo to the top of the screen, click Safari, choose Preferences, go to extensions and remove any items that may be linked inside that area.
-Go to the applications folder and see if there are any items that pertain to the malware/adware you might be experiencing.
Once you have gone through these items, restart and see if the issue is resolved. I would suspect an extension got installed unknowingly.

  • Help! Can't reinstall Lion Server on Mac Mini Server

To me, the perfect computer is a Mac Mini server (the current model) with one of the HDDs replaced with an SSD. I did this with two Mac Minis three months ago and it went perfectly.
Well. I bought a third Mac Mini and have attempted to do the following:
Carefully opened the case, removed the top parts and memory.
Removed the top 500 GB HDD
Replaced it with a OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III 2.5" SSD
Booted from a SD Card with the recovery system on it
Formatted both SSD and the other HDD, ensured they have the GUID boot block needed for Apple booting
What happened was...a total let down. It would start to download Mac OS Lion Server then tell me, "Could not find instalation information for this machine. Contact Applecare." If I went and re-formatted the SSD and tried it again, often it would go past this section, actually starting the download, but then I'd get "Can't download the additional components needed to install OS X."
I verified all connections were solid. Putting the original HDD back caused the machine to boot fine and let me set up Lion Server for use (oddly, even though I'd formatted one of the two RAID drives, but whatever). I am doing the exact same thing I did before successfully, only with an OCZ drive this time instead of Other World Computing. Either Mac Minis hate working with OCZ SSDs, or I made some mistake somehow (I'm pretty sure I didn't), or else Apple has flipped a switch forbidding software restoring of Mac Minis that have been "altered" from factory state. If so this will be a huge problem for Apple. I will make sure the major Apple blogs hear of this, if this is the case.
Can anyone suggest what else I can try to get this to install? If I can get a spare OCZ SSD so it's exactly the same as my previous successes. Otherwise I don't know what else to try.
(I guess cloning the system from one of the Mac Minis that works would be a possibility, though I want to solve this.)

Found that the second hard drive is broken. I have to go to the apple store to have it replaced.
I had to press the power button to turn the server off for several times, then the broken hard drive went disappeared. After that, I had to disable the Spotlight. Then the server went back to work normally.
Now I made a CCC copy of the primary hard drive, and would like to have the server run on the external raid disk (connected through thunderbolt). Does anyone have previous experience with it? Any expectable drawback or issue with this setup?

  • Is this the correct type of Ram for a mac mini?

I have a 2007 Mac mini, and want to go from 1gig to 2 gigs of Ram.
    I currently have 2 512's
I need to know 2 things. (i'm pretty sure on both but i'm not a huge hardware guy to bare with me)
    1. Will there be any compatibility problems? I.e if i upgrade to 2 gigs will it even help or because the rest of the computer is not being upgraded will it be useless?
    2. If i'm good to go, Is this the correct type of Ram? http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=4E665783A5CA7304
Not sure if these are needed but will post anyway:

    NO, it will NOT work.
You have to find the memory specific for Mac, and rule of thumb, Mac Intel chips usually take "ECC" memory. On occasions, You can get away with Non-ECC (on certain PPC Power Mac G5 towers) -- You can check on-line stores, like Newegg, Tigerdirect, or Goolge search for the Mac Mini memory. I got mine (for my two Mac 2,1) on line, and I put 4G (2x 2G), although only 3G was available.
It is worth of upgrade it. just need to find the right memory.

  • Need to boot broken Mac-Mini using retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD

    Hi,
    In Summary:
    ==========
I have Mac Mini (late 2009) which does not boot anymore and I need to install Snow Leopard using retail DVD (version 10.6). The OS/installer from the DVD does not seem to boot either. I always very much appreciate the efforts of true geeks. So please, any casual beginner, please do not demoralize with something like "cannot be done" etc.
    The complete story:
    ==================
    The start of the problem:
    1. All of a sudden, one fine day, on start up, my Mac Mini strated to shut itself down without no apparent reason to me. When trying to boot, it would show a progress bar for about 5 minutes - I am assuming that was disk-consistency check being performed. My best guess is that right after the use of Carbon-Copy Cloner (but I am not 100% sure) it all strated to happen.
    2. Performed Mac's Disk-Util check and [Verify Volume] used to display "invalid directory item count, should be 31 instead of 29". Surface scan said disk hardware is 100% fine. Volume Repair never worked, since OS X was installed on the primary disk. I lost the DVDs that came with this Mac Mini, so the option to boot from that DVD and launch Disk Util etc. was not possible.
    TechTool Pro - No Help:
    3. Started googling and had to choose between [TechTool Pro] and [Disk Warrior], opted for TechTool Pro. Tried its bootable DVD only to learn that TechTool Pro cannot fix it. Again, it's surface scan suggested disk hardware is 100% fine. Sent the details to TechTool Pro support team, they couldn't help either after a couple of e-mails+data exchange. (How do I claim my lost money with TechTool Pro - suggestions appreciated as well).
    Googling / Mac Forums:
    4. Started looking into forums, learnt that someone had successfully repaired this problem using Ubuntu 11.04 install DVD (i.e., without installing the Ubuntu, but just using its 'try from DVD' feature). I had that handy, but forgot to disable HFS+ journaling before attempting to fix the problem. Anyway, attempting volume repair that way couldn't fix the problem as well. However this step took away my ability to boot from Mac.
    5. However using Ubuntu's bootable disk, I could access Mac-HDDs contents - and was able to successfully back-up *all* my important data.
    6. Googled and learnt that just attempting to boot using Ubuntu DVD can take away ability to boot using Mac bootable media - possibly due to EFI internals. Suspecting EFI is now corrupt, I tried other 'hacks' like:
6.1 eEFIt Boot Disk - which does not work at all,
6.2 Empire EFI w/ Chameleon - not sure how to proceed with options presented - trying either does not work,
6.3 Super GRUB2 - boots fine, but attempting to boot from Mac-HDD fails after a couple of seconds,
6.4 Boot-132 - boots fine, prompt asks for input, but then I cannot eject/replace the DVD due to Mac-Mini (lack of) design,
      6.5 Ubuntu 11.04 / 11.10 - still boots fine - just that I cannot go into Mac-OS-X from here,
6.6 TechTool Pro bootable DVD - which used to boot fine earlier stopped to boot.
As you can see, none worked successfully. So I didn't yet try other popular rescue media - as I suspect that is not the direction I need to go into.
    >> Looks like most of my problems are due to the fact that I have Mac-Mini which does not allow eject/replace of DVD from command prompt / out side of Mac-OS-X.
    7. Tried emptying EFI partition, playing with EFI/Mac-OS partitions boot flags, Zapping the PRAM, nothing still allows me to boot either from Mac-HDD or any Mac-Bootable-DVD.
    Current State:
    8. Now while boot time, Mac displays a gray screen for a few seconds, and then a blinking prompt on black background. That's it!
Snow Leopard 10.6 Retail Install DVD:
    9. Went to Mac store and bought this DVD only to witness that I can't boot from it as well. (This is a huge shocker, how is Apple able to sell these DVDs if these don't work on genuine MacMini itself. After all we are able to boot from and install Windows/Linux on a variety of Machines).
I am hoping for a very small step/fix that I am missing, since I can still see and access all Mac-HDD contents after booting from Ubuntu bootable DVD. However I am prepared for a good amount of exercise as well - assuming someone posts a valid/verified fix.
    Things available right now:
    ==========================
    A. Genuine Mac-Mini (Late 2009) who lost it's ability to boot either from its HDD or Mac-bootable DVDs (TechTools Pro, Mac OS X retail DVD)
    B. Mac OS X 10.6 Retail DVD
    C. NOT AVAILABLE - DVD that came with this Mac-Mini
    D. Variety of rescue DVDs, listed in section 6 above
    E. Another machine/PC with Ubuntu 11.04 - giving me ability to access internet
    Thanks for reading.

I had a similar discussion recently with another user.
Your Mac mini (late 2009) originally came with Mac OS X 10.6.2 build 10A432 or build 10C2234 see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159 it would have come with an original install disc specific to your model of Mac which you could use to run Disk Utility from or to do a complete reinstall.
The retail boxed copy of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) was originally intended for older Macs which had previously come with Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.4. It would have on it a version of Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.6.1 which would be able to boot these older Macs, but had no need to boot newer Macs which were released after the launch of Mac OS X 10.6 since all those newer Macs already shipped with their own discs.
So it is normal that the retail boxed Snow Leopard installer does not work on your model Mac mini. You should be using the one that shipped with your Mac mini instead. I am guessing you have lost it.
Assuming you have lost the Mac mini original disc, I can suggest the following options to try and workaround this.
If you have another Mac, an older Mac, one that will be bootable using the retail Snow Leopard install disc you have, you could do either of the following.
Connect an empty external GUID partitioned hard disk to this other Mac
Boot from the retail Snow Leopard installer
Install on to the external disk
Once the install is complete, update it using the combo update not the one via Software Update to Mac OS X 10.6.8. This will add all the newer drivers needed to allow it to work on your newer Mac mini. You can download this combo update from here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
You can now disconnect the external drive and connect it to your Mac mini and boot from it by holding down the Option key when you turn the Mac mini on
or a similar process if you want to wipe the Mac mini and reinstall directly on to it
Boot the Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661 )
Connect the Mac mini as an external hard disk to the other older Mac
Boot from the retail Snow Leopard installer
Install on to the external disk
Once the install is complete, update it using the combo update not the one via Software Update to Mac OS X 10.6.8. This will add all the newer drivers needed to allow it to work on your newer Mac mini. You can download this combo update from here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
You can now disconnect the Mac mini and boot from it as normal
Note: While the Mac mini is connected in FireWire Target Disk mode to the second Mac, you could backup (if you don't already have a backup) any files you need to retrieve.
If you don't have a suitable second Mac you may have to either borrow someone else's, or get the help of an Apple Store if one is in your area.

  • Can I use an IP camera for FaceTime on my Mac mini?

I have a Mac mini running Mountain Lion and I would like to know if it is possible to use the streaming video from a wireless IP camera as the video source for FaceTime (and other video apps). If so, how?
    Thanks!

    HI,
My mistake.  I saw the Mac Mini spec and presumed you were looking for any camera and had come across Wireless IP ones.
I know of one BlueTooth one (just to keep a spin on it ).
I have heard good things about this one - but mainly from 2 years or so ago when it was new.
Actually Wireless IP ones I know next to nothing about.
One of the main issues with iChat 2 through 4 is that the Video that iChat accepts is limited to DV from the External Firewire cameras that were about  or certain USB Cameras that produce output that works with the Utility from Ecamm or the Apple Framework item that was introduced later in OS X 10.4 for the USB 2.0/UVC compliant cameras.
By Snow Leopard and iChat 5 most computers do have USB 2.0 ports and all but two of the Mac range have Internal Cameras that are in fact USB 2.0.UVC Compliant.
On the other side as it were, are Camcorders also move to USB 2.0 over Firewire.
However in many cases the output is not DV and none are UVC compliant.
The video signals from these cannot be "translated by either the iUSBCam Ecamm utility or the internal Driver from Apple.
So the main issue will be the format of the Video output from the camera for iChat or Messages.
Other apps, particularly Quicktime, are going to have less of a problem as Quicktime can handle many more formats.

  • Which adapter do I need to connect my new Mac Mini to my old Apple Cinema HD monitor?

I have a perfectly good Apple Cinema HD monitor (model M8536), but it has an ADC connection, and my new Mac Mini isn't compatible with it. I've bought a new screen for the Mac Mini, but there are going to be times when I need to run two screens in parallel on the Mini. Can anyone tell me which adapter I need to do this? I've looked at the Apple DVI to ADC connector  (M8661LL), but I'm not sure this is what I need, and they're quite pricey, even second-hand on eBay, so I don't want to make a mistake!
    Thanks!

Thanks, dwb ... unfortunately I don't think I'd get very much for my old display, it's so old (> 10 years)! But it still works perfectly, and I'm loathe to throw it away ... and there are going to be times when I need the two screens, so even though I've bought a new 27" Philips monitor, it would be good just to buy an adapter to hook up the old screen ...

  • Mac-mini with hdtv

I have a new mac-mini and I have it hooked to my pioneer viera th-42px600u tv. The native resolution on the tv is 1024x768. I would love to use the mac to replace my dvd player and also use it to play videos. I have ripped some dvd's to vob and then used autoGK to convert to avi (using the xvid encoding). Couple things... First, I would love to just put the videos on my mac and use front row to watch them. But, I get no sound. When I open quicktime and play the file, I still get no sound, but I get a message saying I am missing a quicktime component and I can click on the link that takes me to a sight with the component I am missing. But, there are like 8 different components listed on that site, with no idea which one I need to get the sound. How can I figure out what I need.
Second, the video quality is, well, not good. I have played around with the different resolutions and haven't been able to get anything that looks good. I can play the file on my pc using my flat screen monitor and I know that that isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison, I would expect that the quality of the video would be better than it is. I am using a DVI to HDMI cable to use the HDMI input on the tv. And, has anyone had any luck with video that has HD content? Also, even if I stick the DVD into the DVD drive on the MAC, the DVD player software won't even give me a full screen. That picture is ok, but it looks like I can only get a picture that uses about 70% of the screen area on the TV (where if I just use my DVD player I get a full screen picture).
Any help with any of this would be greatly appreciated. I have found lots of old forums where people talked about having to download utilities to give the mini different resolutions, but that problem appears to have been solved out of the box (I even see a color profile named 'Panasonic TV' if I try to mess with the display stuff).
    Thanks in advance...
    Chris

I did some research (yes, I decided to read the manual). My mistake was that I was trying to choose a resolution from the mini that closely matched the native resolution of the TV. The manual for the TV stated that if I was using the HDMI input, it only works for input resolutions of 480, 720 or 1080. So, I switched the resolution of the mini to 720 (instead of the 780 or whatever I had settled on) and it made a big improvement in the quality of the picture.
Go figure. Who'd a thunk that the manual would have useful information...
    Hamish, I hope that helps.
On an unrelated topic, I'm now in the process of trying to convert movies that I own and have presently ripped to VOB's into some other format suitable for playing in QT on the mini (I would love to just have .avi files or whatever sitting in the Movies directory and fire up Front Row and watch movies that way, instead of having to mess with the DVD drive). Any ideas? I have tried playing with autoGK, but it uses an encoding that doesn't match a codec in QT so I don't get any sound. I have played around with trying to install the DIVX codec, but that doesn't do me any good. Have you ever tried this?
    Chris

  • Trying to pick a Mac Mini '09, '10, or '11 models

Here's where I'm at, what I want, and what I have owned.
Let's start with owned.  3 MacBook Pro's from early 2009 model to late 2011.  For reasons out of my control, they are now in foster homes.
I have purchased Lion and Mountain Lion versions of OS X which of course can be downloaded again.
I never took the MacBook Pros out that much so am rethinking my strategy a bit differently thinking I will get a Mac Mini this time (dual boot with Boot Camp 5 and Windows 7) and later in year buy an iPad mini for portable use.  Trying to balance upgradeability, features, cost, etc is the trick.  Right now looking at the oldest being a 2009 Mini to meet Mountain Lion requirements.  Then either 2010 or 2011 models assuredly increasing in cost.  I have upgraded my MB Pro's and been a tech on many systems for long time so no fear to up the ram and HD if necessary and want to get a model to which I can do both.
I also have a huge video and music collection in Flac/Alac format for music and Mkv for HD videos.  On my MB Pros I ran a cable from the 2011 models Thunderbolt port to an HDMI port on my LED tv which worked great.  I see the 2009 Mini has a mini-displayport and mini-Dvi port while the newer ones have HDMI and Thundebolt.  For all intents as of now I have no future plans for Thunderbolt until if and when the prices become lower.  Oh, and I do need a Firewire port (prefer 800) to connect my media ext HD which 2009 to 2011 seem to have.
Since all 2009 and up will:
    *Run Mountain Lion
    *Are upgradeable
    *have Firewire and USB
How would you choose?  I will most likely use a normal 19" or so monitor for most computer use but want to be able as I could on Mountain Lion to mirror displays to the normal tv.  I think only the newer models with Thunderbolt though will let me send video AND audio to the regular tv?  Isn't that right?
What are the forum's thoughts?  Randy

For your purposes, I would get the 2010 version of the Mini.
As a media center it will be more than adequate.  The added
bonus with that model it still has a built in DVD drive if that is
    a factor.
You CAN get a 2011 model that has a discrete graphics chip
    (Radeon HD 6630M).
    See the specs here->http://support.apple.com/kb/SP632.
The 2.5 GHz and the special order 2.7 GHz models were equipped
with it.  You do lose the internal DVD drive.  Personally, I prefer
to have it external anyway as in past experience (both PC and Mac)
the DVD drive was the first device to fail in the computer.

  • Mac mini won't fill vertically mounted hdef tv screen

Hi I have a brand new mac mini running yosemite hooked up to a hdef tv screen.
When the screen is mounted horizontally it looks great. When it's mounted vertically, the image only fills the monitor from side-to-side with huge black borders top and bottom. I've tried every iteration of the Display preference panel and nothing works.
This used to work with no problem, but upgraded to new mini and now it doesn't work.

  • How do you plug a VGA monitor to a Mac mini (mid 2011)

I used my older Mac mini (mid 2007)  with a VGA LCD monitor through an "DVI to VGA" adapter with no problems.
However, this older adapter does not fit in the "HDMI to DVI Adapter" supplied with my new Mac mini (mid 2011).
There are no receptacles (holes) in the "HDMI to DVI adapter" for the four pins located around the flat tab on one hand of the older adapter .
Any suggestion on how to plug a LCD VGA monitor to a mid 2011 Mac mini?
I know there is a Thunderbolt port and a HDMI port,
but being able to use an inexpensive VGA monitor for set-up and periodic maintenance,
without having to fire up a huge plasma screen each time, would be nice.
There is no displayport on this mid 2011 Mac mini.
There does not seem to be any HDMI to VGA nor  Thunderbolt to VGA adapters on the market.
    Any suggestions?

The > Apple - Thunderbolt Port is the same as and doubles as a Mini DisplayPort.

  • How do I hook a Mac Mini to an existing PC Laptop Dock in order to use existing 23" monitor, mouse, and keyboard?

My parents currently have a Dell Inspiron desktop (which thanks to Windows has crashed and requred re-installation of the OS and then ordering an OEM hard drive and starting from scratch). Anyway, my dad has started bringing home a work laptop, and I got him a laptop docking station so he could take advantage of the 23" monitor, keyboard, and wireless mouse that he prefers.
My brother and I are going to buy my parents at Mac Mini for Christmas.  It's probably simple (or with my luck, impossible) but I need to know what I need to know in order to also hook up the Mac Mini to the monitor/keyboard/mouse (we may buy a keyboard and mouse).  Is it just a matter of cables/splitters?
I'd appreciate any assistance.  I've been trying to get my parents switched over to Mac for almost 10 years now.  Dad is stubborn and will definitely want to use the 23" monitor he bought so I have to find a way to make that work.  The keyboard and mouse aren't a huge deal - instead of being on the drawer that rolls out from under the desk, the Mac stuff can be on top of the desk.  I just need to know if it's possible to avoid that and do everything through the docking station (even if I have to get a USB hub).  I'm pretty sure the monitor has a DVI input, and the current work laptop is using the analog input.
    Thanks all.

The Mac mini is not going to be able to use the Dell docking station itself, due to
the Mac mini is not a laptop
it does not have a docking connector
However you might be able to achieve what you want with a KVM (Keyboard, Video, and Mouse) switchbox which would sit between the dock and Mac mini and the Screen/Keyboard/Mouse.
For this to be as easy as possible, both computers need to be using the same types of connections, so that means USB for the keyboard and mouse, and ideally DVI for the monitor. I am using a dock with a Dell laptop and the dock does have a DVI connection as well as a VGA connection so yours might as well.
You would then need a KVM switchbox with USB and DVI connections. This one would be a suitable example http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-2-Port-Switch-Audio-TK-214i/dp/B004L62KN4/ref=sr_ 1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322228493&sr=1-4 you don't have to use the audio connections.
In theory you could use a VGA adaptor on the Mac mini to make both use VGA but widespread reports suggest VGA on the latest Mac mini is very unrealiable.

  • Connecting Mac Mini to Sharp LCD 45" TV

I just purchased a MINI for Xmas 09'. I have tried to connect it to my 45" tv via: DVI and S-Video connections, both have been un-successful! The only time the Mini shows a display is if I connect to a 17" computer monitor.....
I purchased the Mivi- Dvi to Video Adapter/ Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter/
Mini-DVI to S-Video Adapter and not 1 works with TV. The only time it shows display is when I connect using the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and connect to my 17" computer monitor.........
IS there something I'm connecting wrong? Does the MINI even connect to a 45" TV?
    HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP! Its driving me NUTZ!
My TV is a SHARP LC-45GD7U. It has "S" Video inputs, DVI-I (29Pin) Inputs.
It also has HDMI but it is being used via CABLE TV!
    Any info would HELP! THANKS!

Hi- sorry to hear you are having problems.
Did you try using the mini-dvi to dvi adaptor that was included for free in your mac mini box? Give that a try, but that being said, the mini display port to DVI adaptor should have worked.
Just a note- the S-video adaptor will NOT work with the new 2009 minis. At all. You should bring that back to the store and return it.
Also, can you give us the following details:
    1. Model of your Panasonic set.
    2. Exactly what do you see on your screen when you try to connect? Black screen? Blue screen? Garbled screen? Screen with huge or blurry text? Please be as specific as possible.

  • What Monitors WILL work with the Mac-Mini?

If the new Mac-Mini does not put out analog video and Apple does not state this, what monitors will work with it?

I was able to get an Apple Studio Display to work via the adapter in the Mac Mini box combined with that huge DVI to ADC adapter they had sold me years ago. In the Apple Store I really had to press them to assure me my display would work as they told me they'd charge me a re-stock fee if I had to bring the Mini back. I pressed the point that Apple should know if a monitor it made works with a computer it made. The rep asked around and we both searched the web and then she was able to confirm it would work. They really need a list of acceptable monitors. If anyone locates such a list, please let us all know!

There is no need to reinstall anything to solve this problem.
If Safari crashes on launch and you don't have another web browser, you should be able to launch Safari by starting up in safe mode.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
If you find Apple's instructions too hard to follow, ask for an alternative that doesn't require you to trust a black-box application without knowing what it does.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.
