MAC MINI- Airport Connection cutting out regularly

MAC MINI- 10.4.11 1.5GHz intel core solo
My mac (above) keeps losing airport connection (to my BT homehub router-which is newish)- Has been running fine for years-changed my router-was still running fine for a few weeks AND NOW....keeps cutting out wireless signal for no reason. I have other macs/comps on same signal (nearer router also!) which are unaffected-only mac mini is... I have tried everything I can think of and been on forums etc all day...
Cuts out-won't recognise my router- then after a restart it sometimes comes back on-sometimes just comes back on itself after an hour or so also.... When its on, the signal gradually loses strength till it gets to zero-then disconnects and won't recognise any wireless devices (it usually lists a few that are in my building)....SO- router is OK as other comps are fine- it must be mac mini fault- have had no software updates recently either-so really don't know what to do next! help!

Hi,
thanks for your reply-I have tried every channel possible (before posting my first post)- but like I say -it connects fine at first (sometimes-especially if comp has been shut down overnight)-then after about 15-30 mins the bars start dropping and then it goes and won't come back on... I know it is not the router as my other mac (which is further away from router and also is a much older computer) has never had any problems like this before and doesn't have any while the mini is disconnecting..
I have tried everything I can think of and have spent hours and hours reading through other similar posts- but can't find anything that works....
If the mini macs have a weak antenna then why has it been ok in connecting since I bought it (was one of the first mini's to come out) ? Do you think it gets weaker with age? Why is it ok for a bit then disconnects, then is ok, then is not etc etc ??
Thanks for your help anyway-any other suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated as I am about to throw it out the window!!cheers.

  • I intend to purchase a Mac Mini and connect to a regular (not smart) flat screen TV and use such as monitor. Can this setup also allow access to Netflix or Apple movies or an Apple TV is also required?

I intend to purchase a Mac Mini and connect to a regular (not Smart) flat screen TV that will be as such a large monitor. With this setup do I require an additional Apple TV to watch programs from Netflix, Apple Store movies, Y-tube etc?

You can view NetFlix and YouTube via their websites on a Mac computer. You can purchase/play iTunes movies and other thing via iTunes on the Mac.

  • Mac Mini AirPort Connection

    Hello!
I have an Mac Mini with an Intel core solo and 512 mb RAM. I also have a 1.83 GHz MacBook Pro with 512 mb of RAM. Both are connected to the Internet via AirPort Extreme. The mini works great, but it appears that the reception on the mini is worse than the MacBook Pro's. This makes absolutely no sense, seeing as the mini is about 17 inches away from the AirPort base station. While the MacBook Pro is on the upper level about 23 feet away, and it has perfect reception. When I leave both on at night, the Mac Mini stuggles with reception, then just loses the connection, while the MBP's reception drops down to one or two bars. Does anyone know what is happening, or if there is something I am doing wrong? I'm running all the latest software and everything.
    Thank You!

It is possible you have something near your Mac mini that is causing interference. You might want to try changing the Channel ID your Airport Extreme base station is using to see if that helps. It does pay to try diffeence channels to get the best reception.
I found that my reception can fluctuate when a neighbour's wireless base station is on.

  • AirPort connection cuts out with heavy disk traffic

My AirPort connection often cuts out when there's heavy demand on the connected USB drive.
Is there some way of avoiding this?

My AEBS (802.11n, non-Gigabit version) does the same thing: drops the disk connection during a large file transfer from time to time. Makes the AirDisk problematic for backups.
    The AEBS is at 7.2.1
    My PowerBook is at 10.4.10
To paraphrase Fox Mulder, +you are not alone+.

  • Airport Express and iMac connection cuts out all the time

I have an Airport Express set to 802.11n with b and g compatibility. It is connected to a DSL modem with a static IP address via an Ethernet cable. I use a MacBook Air in the same room as the AE. In another room, I have a 24" iMac (Intel). The iMac is always connected to the AE network as is the MBA. Everytime I make a connection to the iMac (via Screen Sharing or other), the connection cuts out after awhile. There is no interference with the iMac connection, the AE is using a channel no one else around me is using, it just suddenly stops receiving any packets from the AE. I have to open Safari, wait for a website not to load, click on the Network Diagnostic button, go through the reconnection process to the AE network and then it comes back and tells me all is OK. The energy saver is set so the computer never falls to sleep and it is not related to the screen saver coming on.
It just stops sending data to the iMac. All firmware and software are up to date. I have the same problem when using Back to My Mac outside the home. Sometimes I can connect and sometimes I can't.
    Can anyone help?

Hi, Thanks for the suggestions. Here are the answers to your questions:
Channel selection is on Automatic. I have tried switching channels on both my DSL router (and it doesn't go to the channel I select!) and on the AE. Performance is the same.
iMac still drops connection even if MBA is not logged onto the network.
Screen Sharing's performance is poor, even if iMac is receiving other internet data (Safari or iTunes downloads)
MBA always has a good connection
Each machine is using 10.5.5. This problem exists only in the last couple of months when my DSL provider (all Linux) changed some of their configurations.
I will try to do the terminal exercise today. So far this am and last night, no dropped connections. Go figure!

  • How to Connect my PC to Mac Mini Airport wirelessly?

This may be more of a PC question, but I'm trying to connect my PC laptop to my mac mini.
I turned on internet sharing on the Mini.
I can see my Airport wireless network on the PC, it says I'm connected.
I do not have a password enabled on the airport network.
The PC browser says it cannot find the server and will not load a webpage even though the wireless network connection window says I'm connected to my wireless network.
    any ideas?

I would unplug the AirPort Express at this point and see if you can get the Internet sharing with the PC configured.
My Mac mini is connected to the internet by Ethernet cable to my ISP's gateway. I am sharing the Ethernet connection to two iPod Touches via AirPort from my Mac mini. These are the steps for internet sharing from Ethernet to AirPort. See if you have followed them correctly in configuring your kit.
    1. In Sys Prefs/Sharing I highlighted Internet Sharing (do not check the box)
    2. Share your connection from: Ethernet (from the dropdown menu)
    3. To computers using: AirPort (check the little box)
    4. Press the button AirPort Options...
    5. Name your Network
    6. I use Automatic for the channel
    7. I encrypt my network using a 40-bit WEP key
    8. For a non-Apple device you must use only a 5 alphanumeric character, 40-bit WEP password or only a 13 alphanumeric character 128-bit WEP password
    9. Press OK
    10. Check the box for Internet Sharing
    11. Answer any dialog boxes that pop up
    If everything on the Mac end is correct then the issue may lie with the PC since Windows is much more picky about how it is configured. Here is an article that may assist you in getting the PC correct;
    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-share-the-internet-connection-between-your-m ac-and-a-pc/
Other things that you could try is to name your network with a short name without spaces, such as your Apple Discussions User Name. Also create WEP passwords of only 5 or 13 alphanumerics. Some also suggest an All Caps password.

  • Mac Mini - Running Final Cut Express - Output to a 2nd display

Anyway of using Final cut Express to output to a 2nd display on a Mac Mini. I know out of the box it only supports either vga or dvi (1 monitor).
What does final cut express require for this option to work? A 2nd video card?
    Thanks

    hey there,
i believe Matrox has a device called 2 heads to go. never used it but it reads well. you might want to Google "Matrox", go to their 'site & investigate. also if you're editing SD DV, you can use your cam FW'd to the Mac & set to DV in & VTR/VCR mode & connect the cam to a TV or monitor. i used to do this w/ my iMac.
    good luck.

  • "See administrator" error with Mac mini airport card

Help, please. My Mac mini has an airport card installed. I got a new cable modem with a wireless N router (combo cable modem plus wireless N router) and I went to wirelessly connect my Mac mini's airport card to it.
I guess I typed the wireless router's password in wrong too many times or something, because suddenly I received the following airport error message on my Mac when trying to join the network (during the "The network so-and-so requires a WPA password" phase):
    "See administrator."
It will not let me connect to my wireless network, even though my Macbook, my iPad, and my Roku player are connected to this wireless router/combination cable modem just fine. The Mac mini is connected to it through Ethernet.
Also, with my previous set-up, a wireless router (a Belkin N router) combined with a cable modem from my ISP, the Mac mini was connected at the same time both wired (Ethernet) and wirelessly (airport).
So I cannot figure out what is wrong and I cannot figure out how to clear this message.
I have already tried a solution that I found here which is indirectly related:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20060318124936642
because yesterday I was also getting a System keychain error but I can't seem to reproduce that at the moment. I must have cleared that one, but I still can't access my wireless network through the Mac mini.
I am locked out of my wireless network on my Mac mini even though I have full administrative rights on my Mac mini.
Can anyone help me figure out this conundrum? Thank you.

I did find some keychain system files in Library/Keychain.
But in trying to access items in my Keychain Access, I get a message from Keychain Access stating, "Keychain Access wants to use your confidential information stored in "(name of wireless network)" in your keychain. To allow this, entre the "login" keychain password."
I then enter every password known to mankind and it doesn't accept any of them. This is me trying to access an Airport password that is stored in the "login" area in my Keychain Access. I do not know what the mysterious "login" Keychain password is.
Anyway, to go back to the main issue, I am locked out of my wireless network and get the mysterious "see administrator" error. That is the main error message to focus on. Thank you.

  • Mac Mini Airport Problems

    Hi,
My MacMini is disconnecting very frequently from my home network. Using my MBPI I cam access the internet. So I know the problem is not with the internet service provider or wireless router. I re-started the MacMini and try accessing my home network and get asked by my wifi network password. However it times out and boots me out. Ocassionally, when I manage to connect to the internet I check for Mac software updates but again it times out. Ii seems that the problem is with the Mac Mini Airport. Any ideas?

The values for the mini are very low.
This message gives guidelines for evaluating a signal-to-noise ratio (the signal value minus the noise value):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10329543&start=1
If your noise level is in the middle -90s (a very good value), that would give you a SNR of 10 to 17, which would be considered a low or very low signal. I think the explanation of the mini's connection problems is that it isn't receiving a strong enough signal.
There's a way to use a command-line airport utility to learn the actual noise level. Let me know if you want more details.
Can you move the mini or the base station so that they are nearer to each other? Is there anything on top of or next to the mini that might be blocking the signal that you could move? Can you try rotating the mini to see if that improves the signal?
The ultimate fix would be to connect the mini to your AirPort Extreme with an Ethernet cable, either directly or using some sort of "PowerLine" adapter.

  • Mac-Mini wont connect to wired ethernet

I can not get my Mac-Mini to connect to the internet via a wired ethernet cable. When I try to connect it says it is getting an IP address and then boots out and tries again. Its a never ending cycle. It does this in both OS X, and Windows. Do I have a bum network card?

    Hi Steve,
Some ISPs can be fussy about the number of devices you connect to the internet.
If the Modem routes then it tends to be this network card that is in effect "registered" with the ISP.
If you have a cable modem then a Router then the router tends to be the device "registered".
If no router then that is obviously you computer's MAC address.
Some ISPs will go as far as requesting to actually type in the MAC card address and formally request to change it.
It sounds like you have here a system of monitoring that is not that "up front" and causes problems enough for people to have several computers and just swap them.
I would guess it allows one change, like you would need if you have a new computer.

  • My mac mini loses connection with my receiver after turning off the receiver then back on

My Mac Mini loses connection with my Onkyo receiver NR-609 after turning off the receiver then back on.  The only way to reistablish the connection is to unplug then replug the HDMI cable to the Mac Mini.  There's no effect if I unplug then replug the HDMI to the receiver.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.  I've searched a lot but haven't found much of anything so if this is covered elsewhere I would greatly appreciate a link.
    Thanks in advance

Hi and thanks.  I don't know about the audio prefs.  When it happens I am not able to see or hear anything from the computer until I un/re-plug the HDMI to the Mini.  I'm not sure it's changing to something else because there's nothing else connected for it to change to.  I could see that perhaps the audio will change to the Mac Mini's internal speaker.
I found out last night that if, after I lose the signal,  I use my ipad to play a video on the Mac Mini using the Remote app and home sharing the signal gets righted and I can see/hear the computer again.  It's quite an inconvenient fix though and I wish and hope someone here can help me.

  • How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac

How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac?
The question pretty much says it all.
I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
    All systems are running 10.6.8.

Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

  • Apple TV mirroring issues even with Mac mini, airport extreme bought at the end of last year, and an iPad 2

Apple TV mirroring issues even with Mac mini, airport extreme bought at the end of last year, and an iPad 2

I have the same issue with ATV3 and iPhone 4S. Everything works properly, no buffering issues when watching netflix, vimeo, youtube BUT when I try mirroring even a small 15sec iPhone movie it stutters and buffers and results to a choppy playback..same with larger mp4 files such as 1-1.5GB, buffers forever and never plays, I just re-encoded the same movie to 700MB and plays perfectly..
Why Apple, why?..so close..I can accept the bigger movie files issue, but not being able to playback properly an iPhone movie is funny..I recorded a movie with lower bitrate through Filmic Pro (Economy mode, up to 16Mbps)
    and plays properly.
Is there an upcoming software update going to solve the problem or is it hardware related and therefore not fixable.
Please don't reply with a network related answer, by 2012 we know how to set up our networks and everything else runs flawlessly.
I'll apreciate a fast answer, we love Apple, but if it can't play an iphone movie (or a high quality movie from iTunes) it's just not up to my standards.
    Thanks again.
