Mac Mini always waking up because of Wake on Demand but never sleeps again

Hi there,
i first of all like to give you an overview of my setup:
2 Locations:
1. Cologne (Germany)
1x Mac Mini - 10.6.2
Router: Linksys WRT 54 GL (running DDWRT 2.4)
2. Düsseldorf (Germany)
1x Mac Mini - 10.6.2
2x Macbook Pro - 10.6.2
Router: Linksys WRT 54 GL (running DDWRT 2.4)
and one Time Capsule attached to it as a network storage (Time Machine) without using any routing function.
Here is what i'd like to do:
As i often travel between Cologne and Düsseldorf i'd like to access every Mac from everywhere. Thats why i bought those 2 Linksys Routers as they allow me to wake my Macs with Magic Packets from my iPhone. Whenever i need a file from the other mac i just hit "wake up" in the Sleepover iPhone-App and the mac will show up in the finder because "Back to my Mac" is enabled.
Everything worked perfectly fine... until.. Snow Leopard came out. It has this nasty "wake on demand" feature which will wake every mac every two hours to perform some sleep proxy adjustment. Unfortunately there is no way to wake a mac running Snow Leopard via Magic Packet without simultaneously activating the Wake on Demand feature.
Now i would be perfectly fine with all macs waking up from time to time but the problem is that all macs perfrom this adjustments 2-3 times perfectly fine but the fourth time they start and will not sleep again. This leads into the situations that every Mac i have is running when i wake up the next morning.
What can i do to avoid this? It is really annoying as i sleep in the same rome as the mac (which is producing some really loud noises at night when running all the time).
I always get "wake reason = RTC" which stands for Real Time Clock, the Wake on Demand stuff...
I am really going crazy as i cannot figure out why those macs just dont sleep anymore.. sometimes it works (for the first 2-3 times) and then it doesnt.
Thank you!
André

I have quite a lot.  2 iPads, 3 iPhones, 2 Apple TV, 1 Windows PC, 1 Windows server, and a few other network appliances (Blu-Ray player, Xbox360, etc.)  I haven't changed any configuration on any devices.... it seems this issue just appeared 2 days ago.  I will try to reset my router to see if it helps and report back.

  • My Mac Mini keeps waking up all of a sudden

Since a few days ago, I've noticed my late-2012 Mac Mini would wake up almost immediately after it goes to sleep.  This is the same whether I let the Mac idle to the present sleep time, or if I manually tell the computer to sleep via the Apple menu.  In both cases, the Mac would power back up immediately after it went to sleep.
I've pretty much ruled out any external devices or drives, and have confirmed that if I disable "Wake for network access" then the problem goes away.  However, unchecking that feature won't help me because I have Teamviewer and Screen Sharing running and I need to be able to wake it on demand for remote access.
I pulled up the power management log and found that everything was working fine until all of a sudden on Dec. 1, I started getting these errors:
    Dec  1 23:20:39 Familys-Mac-mini kernel[0] <Notice>: AppleBCM5701Ethernet [en0]: Wake reason: Enet.LinkDown - Lost link
    Dec  1 23:46:37 Familys-Mac-mini kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: GIGE (Network)

Can anyone help me troubleshoot the reason for my Mac to wake up right after putting it to sleep?

    Mac Mini - Always Restarts

    Hello,
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help, can you be more specific?

My thuderbolt display is 3 weeks old which I'm using as display for my mac mini. I no longer get the display on but can hear the sound. Please suggest.

Make sure the mini-displayport/TB plug is fully seated.  It may look fully plugged in but isn't.
Make sure the Displays system preferences has an Arrangement tab.  No Arrangement means the monitor is not being detected.
    Do a smc reset.
If none of this works I suggest you take it back to apple (along with your mini).

well turn it off and see if that makes a change. After all IDLE is a server technology. If Google supports it and Yahoo does not then configuring Thunderbird the same means nothing. (I have no idea if Yahoo support it or not)

  • Mac Mini Has Black Blank Screen on Wake Up

    Hi Forum
I have started to Sleep/Wake my Mac Mini between midnight and 6 am when not in use and i see that on wake in the morning it appears to have a Blank or Black screen.!?!? anyone have this?
It seems to be working. i think this as i log on to it using my MBP, as the Mini is headless. When i connect ot the Mini on my MBP, i wouldnt be able to activate Screen Share if the Mini didnt react to being connected. Its in my sidebar to connect to, and does connect, and i can access its files. I dont have a screen connected directly to it.
Any ideas? Its fully up to date. i can turn it off and on and i get full view and functionality, although i didnt want to be doing that each and every day

    Hey all,
I have the same issues right now, I have a late 2012 MacMini attached via HDMI to a 65 inch LED LG Smart TV. Power saving settings > both on never. Schedule settings > Shutdown at 2am every day, Wake or start up at 8am every day. Security / Privacy settings > Login without password. Screen saver settings > change picture every minute. This is all in an attempt to keep the MacMini going so I can use it as my HTPC.
I am controling the MM using a MBA 2013 via screen share, this works fine when the TV is powered on, but after turning it off the screen sharing becomes sluggish and unresponsive, also causing it to freeze, go black and make the cursor work like a paintbrush/eraser when navigating the screen,  basically everything stated here in the forums. Is Apple ever going to fix this bug? the whole reason I wanted to use Mac Osx is because I want to get rid of Windows all together and create a pure Mac environment in my home.
I have been scouring the forums and google to find a solution for this problem which is becoming quite a disillusion for me right now and it is defeating the purpose of having the MM for my HTPC use.
Look forward to any all replies, cheers, Plucka

  • Mac Mini not waking up!

My Mac Mini has developed an interesting problem - it doesn't wake up after putting it to sleep.
It wakes up 90% of the time, while the other 10% of the time it doesn't.
I come into the room when the Mac Mini should be sleeping, and Mini is ON (warm air coming out of the back, white light on), but it doesn't respond to any input via keyboard or mouse, or output any video.
The only solution is to pull the power plug, and restart it.
    Connections:
    DVI Video out
    Apple Mighty Mouse USB
    Apple Keyboard USB
    Apple USB modem
The Mac Mini is under a year old (still under warranty), and I have had no other problems with it.
I was wondering if this could be software or hardware issue.
I have looked in Console, and found nothing out of the ordinary.

The probability is that this issue is software (or at least MacOS) based rather than hardware, and the problem is that if you were to return the system to Apple for examination and repair, the chances are high that they would not be able to replicate the issue - unless you can do so and give them instructions on how to do so too.
Since the combo update didn't resolve the issue, I suspect at this point the only way to effectively troubleshoot the system is to back up all your data and perform a full erase and install using the MacOS installer that came with the system. This would reformat the drive and thus remove everything already on the system, and in effect return the system to the same condition it was when it came out of the box as new. At that point, and before installing anything additional in software or drivers and without connecting anything to the system, it would then be wise to test the system to see if the 'deep sleep' issue remained. If yes, then the problem can really only be hardware and at that point it would be wise to contact Apple or an approved service provider to have it looked at. Alternatively, if the problem doesn't reappear, it would then be appropriate to begin reinstalling software, testing the system out regularly to see if the sleep issue returned. At some point if it does reappear, it would then point to the last item installed.
It is a time consuming process to try and resolve this in that way, which is, I suspect, one reason why it has never been a fully explained (or resolved) problem when it has previously occurred. As such, there's no reason not to have Apple (or an approved service provider) look at the system while it's still under warranty (turn BT back on first of course) but to have any overall benefit it would probably be best to provide as much detail as possible as to the circumstances in which the deep sleep occurs.

  • Headerless mac mini always unresponsive each morning?

Hi - I have a late 2012 mac mini stock h/w running 10.9.4. there is no kb/mouse I connect via screen sharing. Each morning my screen sharing connection is fine, my apps are still running but as soon as I try and use the machine finder appears to restart and then other than control the mouse no app will start / stop and I can no longer SSH to the machine. The power button is the only remedy.
The machine sits dormant as a media player with an HDMI connection to a TV. I've tried a cold boot and left with no apps running for 24 hours and it becomes unresponsive in the same manner. Wired or wireless connections tried.
I'm fairly new to troubleshooting macs as never needed to in the past. Also updated to 10.9.5 and that has had no effect good or bad.
Used diskutil to verify disk / repair permissions etc. again no effect good or bad.
Any ideas where to start? thanks in advance.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Why does my mac mini always seem to be running?

Always seems like the hard drive is running even when I'm not doing anything for a 5-10 minutes? Also the disk that pops up on the screen when it's working seems to be staying on longer and longer. Seem to be having issues about the last 6 mths.... Most the time when I put it to sleep my mini will restart on it's own also? It's about 5 yrs old now and updates automatically. I also have a back up hard drive. Any ideas?

  • Can't login to Mac App store on mac mini. Is it because my ethernet port is fried?

    Hi
like many others, I am unable to log in to the mac app store on my mac mini.  I get the error message saying "An unknown error has occured". I believe the ethernet port is damaged after an electrical storm, but I can still get online wirelessly.  I've read on these forums that the app store verifys the account using the ethernet port.  Can anybody confirm if this is the case, is there a workaround that anyone knows of?
I can log into the App store on my laptop fine, just not the mac mini.
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

This is happening on 2 of my machines.  One is OSX Lion, the other OSX Mountain Lion.  My personal rig works just fine - all on the same network, all with the same basic configuration.  All can log in and out of iTunes, but the two servers can't login via Appstore. My rig and one of the servers even use the same Ethernet driver, so it's not that.
I would seriously doubt your Ethernet card would be working at all if it was indeed damaged by the lightning.  The transducers are relatively sensitive, and it would either fry or not.  You won't get "intermittent" operation as you have described.  Here is a list of all the things I've tried (based on a number of forum suggestions), none of which has worked:
    1) Sign out of itunes, sign back in, try to sign in to AppStore.
    2) Re-enter information in  your account info and save it again (knew that wasn't it but tried anyway).
    3) Ran AppStore as root.
    4) Using EFIStudio, I got the hex string ID of my ethernet card and specifically reference "device-properties" in the boot.plist.  Others  have said this works, so you might give it a try -
    http://legacy.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=169&t=28477
    5) Deleted all other ethernet devices to avoid "confusion" of the return.
    6) Verified I can get HTTPS returned from NAT device.
    7) Used Wireshark to get a packet capture of it working on mine and not working on the other.  On the one that doesn't work, all I get is a couple of SYNs to the appstore and then nothing.  It was along these lines that I was hoping the "device-properties" would work.
I just thought of something though.  If I don't see that ACK at all, it might be sending the packets somewhere else.  hmmm.  I'm going to hard-code in all HTTPS to be routed to that box and try it just for S&G.
    Good luck!

  • Mac Mini blank white screen. Did Cmd+R reprograms but doesn't leave the white screen!!

Mac Mini blank white screen. Did Cmd+R  but doesn't leave the white screen! I tried Cmd+Option+R, this allows reprogramming but after 34 or so minutes it remains in the white screen! Any ideas?

Unfortunately, the white screen will not go away! Therefore, I do not have the option to the Disk Utility!! I wish I could! I would have already erased the disk and reinstalled the OS. Side note here is that an Apple Fan told me that she and her husband had a similar scenario with a new iMac!! Turned out (after 3 attempts by Apple Techs to fix) to have to replace it! They related to me that there was an issue with the connections between the Logic Board and the Hard Drive! The hard drive got burnt out and so did the Logic board on different occasions. I have been a PC user for years until I got tired of all the maintenance and wanted to try Mac. So many thrilled fans claiming they never get issues as often as a PC. Well, here I am six weeks after buying the Mac Mini having issues...I guess a machine is a machine, is a machine! I was thrilled with the Lion OS and all the interaction I was having with it! I truly thought that this was a highly superior computer. I expected quality control to have equally a superiority that one would expect from an Apple product. It could be that this unit is a lemon! It happens! Because I also have iPad and iPhone that have given me the best performance ever!! So I hope that I will someday see the same from this Mac Mini that is just over 40 days old!
If you know another way to get thru the white screen to get to the Disk Utility...I would love to try it. In any case, I am waiting for a call back to confirm an appointment date and time to visit a Mac store for repair.

  • I upgraded to Lion on my Mac Mini and I'm wondering if I have to pay 29.99 again to upgrade to Lion on my Mac book pro?

I upgraded to Lion on my Mac mini and I'm wondering if I have to pay 29.99 to upgrade it on my Macbook pro also. Or since both computers are registered under the same account, is there a way to share the program?

You can download it from the mac app store again on the other computer free of charge. Just go to purchases in the mac app store on the other computer and log in with the same account you used to purchase lion. Then you should see lion listed as a purchase along with a gray box that says INSTALL.

  • Since the later updates of in the 3.x series, I've had increasing losses of functioning of bookmarks & history, with 4.x it's gone, with latest update, Firefox slowed to non-funcitoning on my Mac Mini under OS X - What can I do to make it work again?

'''bold text'''I am not computer savvy. That may be understated.
I've enjoyed Firefox til the later updates to the 3.x version. First lost ability to update my bookmarks and history, but the old remained. With the 4.x updates, I lost all bookmarks and history and could not page back -- big problem. I have not addressed these problems because I have bigger life problems, and had hoped my husband would take care of it all. Not hoping any more. With the latest 5 version update, Firefox is not functioning, too slow to be workable, and getting hung. When it hung, it hung with a troubleshooting message, but I didn't save it. Will try to reproduce that and put it into the next section in this communication form. (I got the uselessly slow, but not the hang up message. Sorry.) It also slightly scrambled the display of writing on the page I pulled up.
I was doing a google search for a Gallery website.
Please give me some Firefox Fixes For Dummies level advice that will help me get my favorite browser back. THANK YOU.

    Hi Suzy Q,
I can send and receive calls.
I get "messaging stopped" when doing a lot of texts.
Texts come up "ghosted" meaning they have the text on the bottom and a transparent one overlaid  on top. they then become one. But I get the ghosting most of the time when I go into a message from a contact to send a text.
When I go to call logs or text logs, the numbers come up first, and then then the names pop up randomly, meaning not in order down the page, until they are all shown. lots of lag time.
    It runs slow.
I have 5 apps on here. I should be able to have a  lot of apps on here, and play music, and have files, and...and....and.
I can get online but doing a Google search, when the page with the choices comes up, it is blurred and I have to tap on the screen for it to become clear and readable.
When online and scrolling, it hitches sometimes/lags/gets stuck then unstuck
I get VZWAVS has stopped. (not sure if those are the right letters)
The status bar that is supposed to be gray with the new update, goes back and forth between green--the old os--to gray. And I have found no continuity with when I get green or when I get gray.
I get a black screen on occasion.
sometimes the proximity sensor doesn't work.
sometimes when I have my bluetooth on and have "hands free mode" on, I get the a text message read through the headset and also through the handset.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
