Mac mini and 5.1 surround

Hi
i'm changing my complete computer-parc from PC to mac. I will start with an imac 27" for my work and a mac-mini that will be attached to my HDTV and 5.1 sound-system.
I have enough of windows and PC-stuff and want to switch as soon as possible. I'm looking to find a solution to all my problems that will suite me.
Why not buying an apple TV, I have 2 reasons for that.
- I want to be able to surf the internet, check mail, use other programs, ...
- I have encoded many films in AVI-format, and would like to use XBMC as mediacenter.
I have 1 problem for the moment. I saw that the mac-mini only has a stereo output.
Is there some solution to with an external sound-card that could be connected with optical cable to a 5.1-system.
For the moment there is a netbook connected to my HDTV with an external soundblaster X-fi 5.1 usb. It works fine for my audio. But i don't thinks there are Mac-drivers for that one.
Any solution or help would be greatfull.
Thanks in advance.

and HDMI-port. How real is this.
though slightly unrelated, see this http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/13/apple-updates-macbook-pro-mini-displayport-i mplementation-to-support-both-audio-and-video/.
Let's hope they add SP/DIF (audio optical out).
the mini has that already. see http://support.apple.com/kb/SP505 and scroll down to audio.

  • ITunes, Mac Mini and 5.1 Surround - No Joy!

    Greetings,
I'm having problems with getting 5.1 Surround Sound out of my Mac Mini with iTunes.
    Here is my hardware setup:
Mac Mini (Mid 2010 model, has built in HDMI output, running OS X Lion 10.7.1 and latest iTunes version)
    Pioneer VSX-1121-K Amplifier
    Panasonic TV
I've got the Mac Mini connected to the Amp with HDMI, and I've also tried a digital audio cable to the amp.
I'm trying to play a movie (The "Art of Flight" by Travis Rice... GREAT movie!) that I purchased in HD from the iTunes store.
When I look at the "info" about the movie in iTunes, it states that it does have Dolby Digital 5.1 audio
When I play the movie in iTunes, with Controls -> Audio & Subtitles -> English (Stereo Audio) in plays fine.
When I change Controls -> Audio & Subtitles -> to English (Surround Audio), the movie freezes and will not play.
When I play the movie directly in Quicktime Player, I can't find any way to set the audio output options from within Quicktime player.
I've tried using both HDMI and Digital Audio out in the Sound Preferences Panel
I've tried using the Audio Midi Setup program in Utilities to configure both the Built-In output, and the HDMI output.
I've set both the Built-in Audio Output and the HDMI to "Encoded Audio".
In Audio Midi Setup, when I go into "Configure Speakers..." button, select "Multichannel", I see "Stereo" selected in the drop down box.  But when I click on the drop down box, the options for "5.1 Surround", "7.1 Surround", etc are all greyed out.
No matter what I try, I get stereo output, instead of surround sound.
    Help??

Well, a bit more experimentation and I have some additional thoughts.
I read the discussion https://discussions.apple.com/message/2530573#2530573 here.
I installed Perian, didn't seem to change anything.
    I read the discussion http://geekwithfamily.com/2007/07/05/home-theater/howto-5-easy-steps-to-output-d olby-digital-from-quicktime-player/ here.
When I go into Audio Midi Setup it still says the output is Stereo only.  BUT, when I play the movie in Quicktime now, I can hear sound coming out of my rear surround channels now.  The receiver still indicates it only has stereo output enabled.  But it does sound like I'm getting stereo output.
Still not clear why in iTunes they have the option for Controls -> Audio & Subtitles -> to English (Surround Audio), but when that is selected the movie won't play at all.  Bug in iTunes, or elsewhere in the system?  I don't know...

  • Mac Mini and MBP Memory Compatible?

    Hello Everyone!
I have a Mac Mini it is a 2009 (Metal Surrounding with Acryllic top), and I have a 2010 MacBook Pro.
    MacMini Specs are as Follow
    - 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    - 8 GB Ram 1333MHz DDR3-SODIMM (2x4GB DDR3 SODIM,H)
    - 120 GB 5400 RPM HDD
MacBook Pro Specs are as follow:
    - 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    - 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM (I Believe PC3? - 1x2gb, 1 ram slot is bad)
    - 250 GB 5400 RPM HDD
I was wondering if I could maybe take one of the 4GB sticks from the MacMini and swap it with the 2GB Stick? I have taken one 4GB Stick out, haven't put the 2GB in the Mini Yet.
But I noticed when I install the 4GB stick into the MBP it won't boot. It will get stuck on the Grey Apple Loading Screen, with the Spinning Circle, after about 30 seconds to a minute, it will stop spinning and be stuck there. I can load the Snow Leopard install disk, can attempt to boot into safe mode, etc. But nothing will work. And I don't want to have to reinstall my whole OSX.
Also I don't get the 3 beeps in succession when starting, it just attempts to boot normally.
I have attached a picture of the two rams. The one on the top is what was already in the MBP, one on the bottom was pulled from the Mini.

According to Mactracker, an early 2009 Mac Mini and a 2010 MBP RAM have identical specifications:   204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  Therefore they should be interchangeable.
If the chip is not being recognized, it suggests that the bay or the chip is faulty, or it is not correctly seated.
    Ciao.

  • New Mac Mini 2012 - HDMI dolby surround

    Hi,
I returned my Mac Mini 2011 because of the poor (lack of) dolby surround support outside of Apple iTunes.
I am very interested to know if somebody can confirm the new Mac Mini 2012 has better dolby surround support. I would like to connect the Mac Mini to my dolby surround receiver with plug and play support in Mac OS X Mountain Lion. And of course compatibility with media software (e.g. VLC or other players).
    Thanks for your comments!

The Mini will pass through Dolby and DTS encoded tracks to
any device which can decode it with XBMC, PLEX, VLC,
    MplayerX, etc.
The signals can be passed through via HDMI or optically.
The proper set up is required in the Audio Midi Setup utility
and in the app.  If you are expecting decoding within the
Mini to multichannel PCM, I don not believe any apps are available
to do that (or I am just not aware of them).
If your are expecting the higher level encodings (DTS-MA or Dolby
True HD), at least up to the 2011 models, they do not contain the
required "protected audio path" to support those formats.

  • Mac Mini and DVI to ADC adapter

I have an old Apple Cinema Display with an ADC port. I have the DVI to ADC adapter, which I have been using to connect to an old Power Mac which is on its last legs. I want to replace the Power Mac with a mac mini and connect it to the display from the HDMI-DVI cable (included) to the DVI-ADC adapter, and then connect on to the Display. The Apple sales representative (after laughing for a while, which I thought was fairly insensitive) said that I won't have audio with this setup, and I will have to get a whole new display. Is this true?

when you say "Mac flat screen LCD", do you mean this:

  • Mac Mini and thunderbolt/vga to LCD TV

    Hi All,
    Here is an interesting one......
I have just taken delivery of 5 new Mac Minis which have the thunderbolt port on them.  The Mac Minis each connect using displayport tb/vga adapter to a switch then on to 5 LCD TVs.
    The HDMI/DVI is not used.
In this config, if I start a Mac Mini the display will not route through the Thunderbolt/vga adapter to any of the TVs (even though I have selected them on the switch). The display seems to want to go through the default HDMI port.
If I connect a standard PC monitor to the tb/vga adapter and reboot, the screen shows correctly on the monitor.  If I then change cables without a reboot, the LCD TVs show correctly!
I can add the PC monitor as a second monitor using HDMI/DVI and ensure that the outputs are mirrored AND that the VGA display is the primary.  However, on reboot it's as if the details are all forgotten!
Searching around it seems that there are issues with Mac Minis and VGA connections to LCD TVs.  That said, I wanted to put my environment out there and see if anyone had an ideas.
Interestingly enough, with older Mac Minis (without the tb/vga) it works perfectly well, indicating a problem with the new Mac Minis.
    Thanks for ANY ideas!!!!

    Hey Spost!
You have explained exactly what happened to me last night.  I was afraid it was part of the 10.8.3 update or the latest ATV software update that hit this week.   I tried from my macbook pro and the airplay from 10.8.3 and the atv software worked fine.
Previously my mac mini was connected to a monitor in my basement but last night i made it "headless" and moved it to my "server closet"  airplaying prior to the move worked great ... then last night 4:3 Green Screen.
My guess is the computer needs to be connected to a external display in order for airplay resolution to figure itself out.   Via Logmein i could see that the Mirror mode wanted to use the resolution that fit the mac and not what was best for the Apple TV ... Even forcing the change made the setting go right back to this mac.
Looks to be a bug in a plist file that apple would need to fix as many people run headless mac mini's and now wish to AirPlay to their Apple TV's without the need for a external cable run.

I have a Mac Mini and I can't get it to work with my Ricoh Aficio MP 161.  Any ideas?

The latest Apple driver support begins with the MP 171.
Here is Ricoh's official driver download page specifically for the Afico MP 161. Note that new drivers for this device were released on Aug 2, and include Lion and Mountain Lion.
Hopefully, this will solve your device issues.

Could be a bad cable or bad Thunderbolt port.
You have 90 days of free telephone support on a new device. You can call them at 1-800-MY-APPLE. Have your Mini's serial number handy
You can also make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I suspect the monitor has an ADC connector

If so you need one of these:

Otherwise what connector is on the monitor?

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?

  • Connecting new mac mini and a pc to internet

I have ordered a new mac mini and airport express to connect it to my broadband connection. I have a none wireless pc already connected to the DSL. This is a usb connection to the pc.
Can I connect the dsl to the airport express usb port and then connect my pc to the free ethernet port? Will this work and would the Mac then pick up the connected printer?

Can I connect the dsl to the airport express usb port and then connect my pc to the free ethernet port?
No, this will not work. To use an AirPort Express (or AirPort Extreme) base station, you will need a DSL modem that has an Ethernet port. The reason is that the USB connection requires a software driver to be installed on your computer. Since it's not possible to install drivers (Mac OS, Windows or otherwise) on the AirPort Express because it's not a computer, you'll need to use the Ethernet port. I would recommend you visit the AirPort Express forum. There are some knowledgeable people there who can help you find a new modem that has Ethernet and get everything configured for you.

  • Mac Mini and my TV

I was entertaining the idea of purchasing a Mac Mini and hooking it up to my TV.  I have all the ports (HDMI) necesarry for this style of configuration.  My only question is resolution.  What should I be looking for with regards to resolution so that if I do hook up my Mac Mini to the TV, I get a clear picture...

    Hi Scorogers
I am thinking about going down the same line wanting to upgrade the resolution from my ATV2.
The Panasonic TV's HD resolution is 1920X1080. The Mac Mini on HDMI will output 1920X1200 and on Thunderbolt even higher so I do not see any reason for not getting a great picture. Hopefully someone on here has it setup and could just confirm the same..........

  • Mac Mini and LCD TV, changed resolution and now cannot use the screen anymo

    hello,
I have a Mac Mini and and LCD TV which is connected via HDMI cable. I was playing around with the resolution settings (not very smart in hindsight) and managed to select a resolution that my TV does not support. I do not have another monitor or Macbook. Is there anything I can do to reset the resolution settings? I tried to reset the PRAM, but that didnt seem to solve the problem. I also tried starting in Safe mode but that didnt do the trick either.
    Appreciate your help!

Arie, it may be possible to get to System Preferences via the keyboard. But you have to be sure the Finder is the foreground application. Is your Mac set to boot straight into your account or does it pause waiting for a password? If it boots straight into a user account, you can try the following procedure:
\- Restart the Mac (It should be hooked up to the misbehaving display in case that's not clear)
\- When it is done booting, type Cmd-Tab and then Cmd-Q. Do this several times. (Cmd-tab will step the Mac through all the programs that might be running. Cmd-Q quits them. Doing this several times ensures that only the Finder is running since the Finder can't be quit. This is important for the next step)
\- Type Shift-Cmd-a (This should open the Applications folder)
\- Type "sys" quickly (System Preferences within the Applications folder should now be highlighted)
\- Type Cmd-o (This should open System Preferences)
\- Type out the word "screen settings" completely (This should cause Displays to be highlighted in the System Preferences main panel)
\- Hit the Return key (This should open Display Preferences)
\- Hit the Return key again (This will clear any alert box that may have popped up)
\- Hit the Tab key once (This will shift the keyboard focus to the resolutions list)
\- Now start using the up (or down) arrow on the keyboard one press at a time. Each press of the arrow key moves to the next resolution in the list. Wait at least five seconds between arrow key presses for the resolution change to take effect. Hopefully, at some point, the monitor will light up with a stable image and you are back in business.
