Mac mini and sony 46X2000

I have a mac mini, os 10.4.11 connected to my SONY46X2000 via VGA cable. It works perfectly most of the time, screen res is set to 1024x1280 and the display is recognised as a sonyTV. I am however experiencing the odd drop out, where the screen goes completely blank. It returns after a few seconds. Could this be overheating? are there any such known issues, it does appear to occur when the mini has been left on for a long period (days, rather than hours).

Yes, that adapter would do it. There are also full length cables with DVI at one end and HDMI at the other. FutureShop seems to sell those as well.

But before you spend money on this solution, it would be good to confirm a computer connection is supported by the Sony over HDMI. Check the Sony's user manual to see what it has to say about making computer connections.

  • Mac mini and Sony tv resolution issue

    Hello,
I have recently purchased a Mac mini for the purposes of hooking it up to my 51" Sony Wega HDTV. I took the mini out and connected the DVI adaptor that came in box and then hooked the mini to the tv via HDMI cable thinking this was the best possible connection for my mini. I have an issue where the screen is over flowing off the TV screen. I looked in system preference and have very limited resolution options but 1080i was selected and also over scan was checked. If I deselect overscan I get borders which I don't want. My tv doesn't have many options so how can I calibrate these two to work togethor?

I just discovered this is not a TV issue at all...
Uh, yes it is. Overscan is a condition unique to TVs. Computer monitors don't do it (overscan) hence there is normally no need for the kind of graphics card driver you are talking about, e.g. one that has precise control of video borders.
Many TVs on the market today have a method for defeating overscan, tucked away somewhere in their menu system, in order to allow the TV to be used just like a computer monitor. That is always the preferred solution when it is available because it will make the best possible image on the TV.
Your TV is a rear projection TV. Such TVs are not well suited for use as computer monitors because overscan is naturally baked into the optics architecture, meaning the manufacturer deliberately sets the mirror and lens system in such a way as to cause the native resolution (1280 x 720 in the case of your TV) to extend beyond the edges of the projection screen. Therefore it is impossible to get the native resolution of the projector's engine to display fully and perfectly on the screen. Only scaled or bordered version of it can ever be displayed. It's all fixed at the factory and there's no getting around the fact.
For the original G4 Mac mini that had ATI Graphics, there was a driver like the one you found for your father's Windows computer that allowed video borders to be set independent of resolution. But apart from that early effort on the part of ATI, I have not seen anything like that since for minis that have graphics based on Intel or nVidia hardware. I think you are going to be stuck with the dark video borders as a necessary limitation of the TV you own in the absence of any driver to counteract that limitation.
I believe the media center front end app called Plex has a facility for setting video borders, but I've never used it personally since I am able to turn overscan off on my TV. So I can't vouch for how well it works. And in any case, since it is bound to the app, it will only be active when Plex is running and not when, say for example, the Finder is in use, which is when you most need it.

  • Intel Mac Mini and Sony Wega displays

I purchased one of the G4 based Minis for use in my media center. At that time I had quite a bit of difficulty getting it to work with my Sony KDF-60xs955 60" HDTV. I did eventually get it working and stable but the process, when written down for others in this forum post, is somewhat intimidating.
My parents really need a new machine for their daily use and I'm going to be donating that Mini to them. Before I replace it with a new intel Mini (yay Front Row!) I want to know whether it will autodetect my television or not. I have no desire to spend the 4-5 hours needed to hack it into working again, plus the hassle of getting it to work again any time I switch displays for a few hours. More importantly I don't feel like I should have to...The HDTV is automatically detected by a PowerBook and that works flawlessly.
One of the major reasons I pay higher prices to Apple is so that it just works. My new iMac? It just works. My old PowerBook? It just works. My old Mac Mini? Not so much... So, here I am hoping to get an answer out of these forums: To buy or not to buy that is the question, whether tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous non-support or to take my cash away from this sea of troubles and by opposing end them.
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I have downloaded the lastest Windows Media Player from Microsoft for Mac OS X, but it doesn't officially support the Intel Macs. It runs with wmv videos from my harddisk, for example, but I also can't play the amazon.com sound samples (I just tried). I guess it's because the Windows Media Player is running via Rosetta, maybe there is some problem there.
For the moment I could only suggest to use the Real-player sound samples as a work-around. Real player does work on the Intel Mac with these sound samples. Just that on my machine it does only download and I have to start it from the desktop instead of right inside of Safari. Maybe it's just a question of preferences, but it does work, at least.

  • Display Issues, Mac Mini and Sony LCD TV

    Hi,
    First my setup:
    Mac Mini(Core2Duo) = DVI2HDMI = Pioneer ASX2 = Sony Bravia 40W2000
I have two issues, in order of importance:
Issue #1: When switching off the Pioneer my Mac Mini will suspend. This is not wanted, because I somethimes want it to either work on the iTunes library (hours of work) or download torrents.
Issue #2: The famous my display is not 1080p anymore but VGA. Has anyone fixed this?
I haven´t seen any fixes to issue #2 even though it´s super common. I do hope that anyone can sort me out on issue #1

Both items #1 and #2 can be corrected using the Gefen DVI Detective.

  • MAC Mini and Sony TV LCD  question

In the past, when I connected to my Sony projector tv, unable to use the highest setting because lost part of the desktop with icons on bottom and entire top bar. New Sony LCD used and same thing happening. I am using a HDMI connection on the Apple. Wonder if this would happen if I switched to analog? Any other settings I can manually adjust to get the full screen and menu bars??

  • Mac Mini and Final Cut Pro

Hi there, I wanted to see if anyone out here had a good or very bad experience working with FCP on the newest model Mac Mini, and more so, if it is possible to use the HDMI output on the Mac Mini as a video and audio out to a TV while working. Can ProRes 422 HQ or ProRes 444 when played in a sequence in FCP be seen on a TV connected to the HDMI port?
    Many thanks

I disagree I am using FCP7 AND CS5 on my late 2009 mini.  It doesnt have HDMI out but it functions with HD footage.  My Sony Nex Vg10 shoots are cut with it, and I even have used CS5 with Red files without issues.  The HDMI should work but I don't have that model and have never hooked it up for that reason.
Yes in an ideal world we would all have 12 cores with SSD, color grad monitors, and thunderbolts (that hook up to nothing as of today lol), etc.  But for the rest of us in reality you have to work with budget you have and not every gig is destined for the silver screen.  My Mini can get stuff done, even if its not portable like a MBP or multi cored like a Mac Pro.  PS FCP7 only can use 1.5 cores anyway and like 3gb of ram since its 32bit the higher end machines are irrelevant right now (unless your using another NLE like CS or Avid).  FCP X will be 64 bit and make more sense to run on higher ended machines.
So if you own the mini, and the HD tv and FCP, and all that is preventing you from trying this out is the adaptor, go grab it and test it out, just don't lose your receipt....  Its a lot easier to buy that adpaptor vs a new machine, and I am sure you will be fine.  If you use FCP with a mini your probably already used to rendering anyway and as an editor sitting around rendering while getting paid can be ton$ of fun!  i am going to miss that the most in the new version i think

  • Problem with Mac mini and HP w2207h

I have a new Mac mini and a HP w2207h screen. I have a problem with the resolution. The screen wants to be on 1680x1050, but when i turn that mode on, the screen is just blinking and you can't see anything. so i have to use the 1080p modus. But it's kind of blury. Can anyone help? Does apple has some kind of support mail??

Don't waste your time or money on the adaptors. I have a hp 2207h and I tried th dvi to hdmi and the dvi to vga, neither work, I still don't have a working monitor. Waited on the phone for tech support for 30 minutes. Then got a total line of crap.
This monitor works flawlessly with my comcast motorola hd cable box, with my sony dvd player, with my toshiba laptop, with my hp computer. But will not work with a mac mini... The only logical reason given the wide varity of equipment it will work on, is that apple does not support HDMI standards, if they did, it would work.
The apple does work on my 40 in tv. But thats not where I want it. So, this is useless to me. And after the line of crap I got from tech support, I'm thinking about quiting apple all together.
This ***, I was really excited about my first apple computer. Now after 4 hours, and nothing but frustration and no support at all from apple, I'm thinking about giving up and sticking with PC's from here on out. Worst experiance ever.
I may even switch to android and chuck my 4...

  • Mac Mini and DVI to ADC adapter

I have an old Apple Cinema Display with an ADC port. I have the DVI to ADC adapter, which I have been using to connect to an old Power Mac which is on its last legs. I want to replace the Power Mac with a mac mini and connect it to the display from the HDMI-DVI cable (included) to the DVI-ADC adapter, and then connect on to the Display. The Apple sales representative (after laughing for a while, which I thought was fairly insensitive) said that I won't have audio with this setup, and I will have to get a whole new display. Is this true?

  • Mac Mini and thunderbolt/vga to LCD TV

    Hi All,
    Here is an interesting one......
I have just taken delivery of 5 new Mac Minis which have the thunderbolt port on them.  The Mac Minis each connect using displayport tb/vga adapter to a switch then on to 5 LCD TVs.
    The HDMI/DVI is not used.
In this config, if I start a Mac Mini the display will not route through the Thunderbolt/vga adapter to any of the TVs (even though I have selected them on the switch). The display seems to want to go through the default HDMI port.
If I connect a standard PC monitor to the tb/vga adapter and reboot, the screen shows correctly on the monitor.  If I then change cables without a reboot, the LCD TVs show correctly!
I can add the PC monitor as a second monitor using HDMI/DVI and ensure that the outputs are mirrored AND that the VGA display is the primary.  However, on reboot it's as if the details are all forgotten!
Searching around it seems that there are issues with Mac Minis and VGA connections to LCD TVs.  That said, I wanted to put my environment out there and see if anyone had an ideas.
Interestingly enough, with older Mac Minis (without the tb/vga) it works perfectly well, indicating a problem with the new Mac Minis.
    Thanks for ANY ideas!!!!

    Hey Spost!
You have explained exactly what happened to me last night.  I was afraid it was part of the 10.8.3 update or the latest ATV software update that hit this week.   I tried from my macbook pro and the airplay from 10.8.3 and the atv software worked fine.
Previously my mac mini was connected to a monitor in my basement but last night i made it "headless" and moved it to my "server closet"  airplaying prior to the move worked great ... then last night 4:3 Green Screen.
My guess is the computer needs to be connected to a external display in order for airplay resolution to figure itself out.   Via Logmein i could see that the Mirror mode wanted to use the resolution that fit the mac and not what was best for the Apple TV ... Even forcing the change made the setting go right back to this mac.
Looks to be a bug in a plist file that apple would need to fix as many people run headless mac mini's and now wish to AirPlay to their Apple TV's without the need for a external cable run.

I have a Mac Mini and I can't get it to work with my Ricoh Aficio MP 161.  Any ideas?

The latest Apple driver support begins with the MP 171.
Here is Ricoh's official driver download page specifically for the Afico MP 161. Note that new drivers for this device were released on Aug 2, and include Lion and Mountain Lion.
Hopefully, this will solve your device issues.

Could be a bad cable or bad Thunderbolt port.
