Mac mini and the powerbook, connecting the two

Hi Everyone,
I'm currently on the move, so the convenience of portability is extremely important.
I'm a PowerBook user, with only little remaining hard drive space to spare. But, I also have an external hard drive to ease the matter. Now much of the space on my PB has been taken up by applications, but a large sum has also been used up by music. And by way of preference, I would rather not have to turn on my external in the event that I want to listen to music, which, really, is everytime I'm on my computer. So I'm looking to free up some space on my PB, which has lead me to consider a Mac mini. Whereas the PB would serve to house all my work applications and the external for all my work files, I anticipate that the mac mini would house all my music and other non-work related files.
But going back to the issue of portability and convenience, I wouldn't want to have to lug around a keyboard and monitor with the mini, and which that in mind, I was wonder if it's decently possible to connect the mini to my PB, and effectively running the mini and all its applications from my PB.
Thank you all.
Regards,
Jeremy

Thank you for the facts and suggestions everyone. With all the information gathered, I've arrived at the following.
So, I do have an external, as mentioned, but with all the sensitive data on its drives, I'd rather not have to turn it on whenever I feel like listening to music. I normally power it on three-four times a week to work on my projects, and after each respective session, I turn it off, concerned that it may possibly overheat.. or break down, as it's happened to me before with another external, a few years back.
And I've come to agreement with you all, in that the mini with its current specs, isn't the most cost-effective and portable path I could take, with particular regards to my on-the-go lifestyle.
And I would rather not have my PB opened up at this point... then it occurred to me... my iPod. I'm currently at the office at the moment, so I'm unable to test this out, but is it possible to run music off the ipod through the PB's speakers, while it's (obviously) connected to the PB? Or I suppose I could wait for Apple's iPod Hi-Fi.

Thanks. Where could I possibly look for a firewall rule. I knowingly did not creat any. My system has internet coming to a Modem which then is connected to a wireless router. I have computers connecting to the router through cable as well as wireless. One of these computers has been our  mailserver using Mercury and Pegasus and that computer has a static IP address. The Mac Mini also has been assigned a different srtatic IP address. I have only set up user account, none of them an email account as I initially expect them to receive only internal mails. Is it necessary that I must set up an email id for each user while setting up the user account. My server id is server.local. So would the email id for local users be [email protected]?

Hi Alxx911, and John Hammer1. After reading John's reply - " You can plug something into it's headphone jack. though" . I thought i'd try out of curiosity. I plugged in some headphones. I didn't expect anything to happen  and nothing happened. The audio jack is for the Dell soundbar which is optional.
Here's a direct copy and paste from the users manual: Section About Your Monitor.
Attaching the Soundbar AX510 / AX510PA (Optional) CAUTION: Do not use with any device other than the Dell Soundbar. NOTE: The Soundbar power connector (+12 V DC output) is for the optional Dell Soundbar AX510/AX510PAonly. To attach the Soundbar: 1. Working from the back of the monitor, attach the Soundbar by aligning the two slots with the two tabs along the bottom of the monitor. 2. Slide the Soundbar to the left until it snaps into place. 3.  Connectthe Soundbar with the DC power connector. 4. Insert the mini stereo plug from the back of the Soundbar into the computerís audio output jack. For HDMI/DP, you can insert the mini stereo plug into the monitorís audio output port.  If there is no sound, check your PC if the Audio output is configured to HDMI/DP output.
This monitor has no speakers. (Like John Hammer1 mentioned). The no speakers feature was one of the reasons I chose this monitor.
    Good Luck !

  • HT3382 I have an early 2006 Mac Mini and need to connect it to a VGA display.  What connector should I use?

I have an early 2006 intel core solo Mac Mini (locted in India) and need to connect it to a VGA display.  I have looked at the support articles but can't figure out what adapter to use.

There was a DVI to VGA adapter included with the early 2006 mini.  The one that I have looks like this
You should be able to buy one, although it's not currently listed in the US Apple online store.

  • I have just updated my mac mini and am considering selling the old one.

    My question is:
My old Mini came with Leopard 10.5.2 and I want to set it up with a clean install of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from a retail disk and update from there to 10.6.8, so that I can sell it.
Can anyone tell me if I can reinstall the application bundles that came with the mini (iLife etc) from the original grey disks after re-installing Snow Leopard or do I have to install Leopard and upgrade to Snow Leopard afterwards.
    Any info much appreciated.
    Mark.

Suppose that would be better, I was thinking that I need to keep my SL Disk for my Macbook which I don't have a restore disk for, however as I have both time machine and a bootable back up and a bootable USB SL Drive for it, I don't really need the SL Disk any more.
Allows me to spend more time on the new one getting it how I wan't it.
    Many thanks.

  • HT1338 I bought a new Mac Mini and tried to pair my keyboard with the Mac Mini. They will not pair via Bluetooth. What is wrong?

I have recently bought a Mac Mini and tried to pair the new apple wireless keyboard with the Mac but after trying 6 times no luck. What can I do about this?

    try this method:
You need at least a USB mouse. If you don't get any option to pair a keyboard, click through the setup until you get to the "Create Your Computer Account" screen, right click in any of the text fields and select Substitutions --> Show Substitutions.  From there click on text preferences.  The preferences pane will popup and from there you can just click the back button (next to show all) to get to the full preferences menu.  Next click on keyboard, then select setup bluetooth keyboard and you're golden.

  • Two mac mini and raid 1

    Hi All,
Two mac mini with thunderbolt cable connecting, the second mac as external hard drive.
Set on the first mac RAID 1 with the second mac...
When the first mac fails, the second one can directly be started.
    Is that even possible?
    Thank you!
    michael

    Yes it is.
You will need to boot from a third temporary drive to first setup both Mac minis as a RAID 1 mirror.
Note: This will destroy any data on both Mac minis.
After building the RAID 1 then you can install Mavericks on to the RAID.

  • Difficulty connecting Mac Mini and Windows Vista laptop

I have a Windows Vista laptop. I have been connecting to the Internet via a wireless DSL router. I just purchased a Mac Mini and want to hardwire the Mac Mini to the router and also create a home newtork where the Mac Mini can transfer files to and from the Vista laptop and vice versa.
What is the best way to do this? Could you please provide detailed information as well? I don't have a lot of experience with computers or networking.
    Thank you!

  • Problem with Mac Mini and Panasonic PT-AE700 projector

I just bought a brand new Mac Mini and intended to connect it through hdmi to my Panasonic PT-AE700 projector (with a 10 m hdmi-hdmi cable and a dvi-hdmi adapter). However there is no signal recognized by the projector.
Any suggestions? I have tried with two different dvi-hdmi adapters between the Mini and the cable. Both work fine with my MacBook Pro, but with the Mini there is no signal.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks again BSteely for your answer.
Unfortunately I still haven't been able to get anything out from the projector through HDMI.
However, I've found someone with a similar problem. It seems the problem is the lenght of the HDMI cable (which in fact is closer to 15 m than 10 m). HDMI is designed to handle at least those 10-15 m runs, but the problem seems to be DVI, which is only capable of something around 5 m. Since I'm converting from DVI to HDMI, I'm subject to DVI's limitations. And the MBP seems to have better capability of handling the weaked signal than the Mini.

Gefen should have an amplifier (HDMI Super Booster) that could solve the problem. I just ordered it to see if it could help in strenghtening the signal and solve the problem for me.

  • New mac mini and wireless keyboard

how do I set up a new mac mini and wireless keyboard at the same time?

Since the Mac Mini does not come with a Monitor, Keyboard or Mouse those are needed when setting up a Mac Mini. I don't know what brand wireless KB you have or if that even matters.
I have an Apple wireless keyboard (bluetooth), Apple magic trackpad (bluetooth), and Dell DVI monitor. When I initially booted my new Mac Mini, the screen showed it searching for bluetooth devices. It found the keyboard first and then a few seconds later, the mouse. So, I had all devices to finish setup of the Mini.

  • Mac Mini and Gaming under XP

Hi. I haven't installed XP yet because I only need it to play games on my Mac Mini. I was wondering if anyone has tried using some recent racing games on the Mini, for example, GTR2, Colin McCrae Rally 2005 and TOCA Race Driver 3. Has anyone experienced these on a Mini? Mine is 1.66ghz with 2gb ram. Thanks for any help.

I have this same Mac mini and you will find the gaming experience is similar to a similarly spec'd PC laptop that uses the GMA950 integrated GPU. The GPU is not particularly special when it coes to 3D processing although does hand 2D quite well.

Could be a bad cable or bad Thunderbolt port.

    On Second thoughts...
I don't really know how well Logic Express 7 performs on the Mac Mini because I have not yet had the chance to experience the two together. Don't let that put you off the idea though! From my understanding of the system requirements printed on the Logic Express homepage, it states that a G4 or faster system is required, however Apple personally recommend a Dual G4 or G5 is recommended alongside a minimum of 512MB of Ram. This Does mean that Logic Express will run on the Mac Mini but you will most probably find it lags when moving samples in real time and rendering them onto your hard drive. If you really want to enjoy making "serious" music on the Mac then you really need to be looking at the iMac G5 or the iMac Core Duo (Intel) purely for your tempers sake. As for an Intel Mac Mini, there is no indication as to when we will be seeing one on the market and therefore you may find yourself on the fence between keeping your fixed budget and holding on a little or jumping in and getting on the right road to a digital musical life - mac style.
