Mac mini as a voice recorder

hello
planning to buy a mac mini i would like to know if
if can be used as a recorder (just connecting a microphone
to audio in). does it work ? is there anyone with
real experience with it ?
thanks in advance and have a nice weekend.
Bruno

Your Mac mini can most certainly be used as an Audio recorder. I would recommend using something like the Griffin iMic or a MicFlex USB microphone (which is really nice, a gooseneck design). You may use GarageBand or Quicktime Pro to record audio. The iSight, too, is also an external microphone, which also works well.

  • Mac mini + lcd tv + tv recording

    hello
i'm about to get an lcd tv with a mac mini to use as a dvd player/media player/tv recorder but want to know what other people are using if they have this kind of set-up.
i'm also keen to limit the amount of keyboard/mouse usage, does anyone know of any remote control systems available?
i currently have eyehome and want to use this kind of set-up to play music, view pictures and video (front row style?)
    look forward to hearing thoughts/ideas/stories.

I notice the W2600 is no longer onsale as it has been replaced by a 32" and 37" LCD's. The W2600 however is a perfect match to Sky and the Mac Mini. I have my Sky box primary SCART feeding into the W2600 primary SCART input. I have the Sky box secondary (VCR) SCART feeding into my EyeTV200 via a SCART to Component RCA cinch cable LRaudio. I split the Mac Mini (headphone) audio into a cable to the W2600 DVI audio IN and a cable to my Stereo Amp. The Mac Mini connects perfectly to the W2600 via the Dell supplied DVI - DVI cable.
it's more of a problem specifying which (EyeTV) encoder to choose, EyeTV is a great choice because a) it works b) it's fairly simple c) quality is ok! and it's sort of an industry standard as well, because some other video converters use Elgato software. (Plextor, Terratec, Miglia)
The problem is that my W2600 is DVI input, and the next generation of Sky digiboxes will be HDMI output (tho' there was a rumour about Sky selling initially a DVI only HDTV Skybox for the first month only then switching to HDMI) It's possible that your W2600 will be DVI with HDCP (content protection possibilities) so very similar to HDMI. Which Elgato product will be the best in the HDTV age is a mystery, I think I'd still recommend the EyeTV200 as with the component video input you'll be able to source video from DVD,VHS,Sky and a cheap Freeview - so you don't really need the EyeTV410 receiver.
If I was you, I'd wait (if at all possible) until AFTER the Steve Jobs keynote speech at the IDG World Expo MacWorld San Francisco , Moscone Center on January 10, 2006. hint new mini + Fxxxx-Rxx 2.0 hint and why did Apple recently hire a senior executive of Elgato? I'm especially happy with my current setup, and if you buy everything now - then you'll be getting everything for much less than I paid! I think the Dell 26" came down by £200 alone recently! Whatever new mac Mini turns up, I'll eventually replace the one I use for DV PVR - but I think it will be fine for another 6 months or more!
I bought a basic 1gigabyte 1.25 (EyeTV likes 0.5GB ram buffer!) , but you'll definitely need BT for the various front row controllers. A dongle works OK, or the built in BT is good. I didn't want to hardwire as I sometimes get hit by thunderstorms, Airport gives a bit more galvanic isolation than ethernet!

  • Mini as a tv-recorder?

Is it possible to use a mac mini as a tv-recorder? I have a beovision avant tv (USA) and would like to use the mini to record programs directly from the tv. There is a data port on the tv and am wondering if that would be used in this setup. Is there any software that would be needed .....Setup is cable without a cable box, directly to the tv.

thanks for the response. I know about eye tv but how would that hook up to the tv? The eye tv doesn't let you watch one program and record another...if I hooked the mini up to the tv I thought that I could watch a separate program while another was recording.... I can have two different programs on the tv at one time........that's the only time I'd want to record something and I have both a mini and the beovision and it might not cost more $$$ to do this. I just don't like the screen within a screen situation for a worthwhile program that demands serious attention and not just "glancing" viewing.

  • Does Thunder bolt port in mac mini support video and audio

Please let me know thunderbolt or mini display port in mac mini does support voice and video. If I connect this Thunderbolt port to a TV using the mini display port to HDMI cable, will I get both audio and video in TV.

It depends on the model of Mac mini. If you have the new shape Mac mini - the one with the black circular plastic disk on the bottom, then yes. It can support sending audio and video to a suitable Displayport or Mini Displayport monitor, and it can also support sending audio and video together via HDMI using the built-in HDMI port.
Older Mac minis do not support this even with a Mini Displayport to HDMI adaptor. The nearest you can get is an adaptor like the KanexLive iAdapt 51 which takes the audio from the speaker out and the video from the Mini Displayport and then combines them to send over HDMI.

  • No way of voice recording?

After some web research I found that the iPod Mini doesn't support voice recording the normal way (by simply plugging in a 3rd party voice recorder). Isn't there any other way of making the Mini suitable for voice recording?
    Thanks in advance!

    No, can't be done.

  • Hard drive options for Logic Express with a Mac Mini

I'm considering getting a Mac Mini to use for recording video from a medical endoscopic camera. The reasons for choosing a Mac Mini are 1) low cost 2) small size and 3) no fans - blowing dust around an operating theatre can be a risk (therefore even if cost wasn't an issue, the fans would preclude other mac models).
I've been looking at the spec of a Mac Mini - they have 5400 rpm hard drives and only 1 firewire 800 port. I'm using a Canopus ADVC 55 to convert analogue video to DV which connects using Firewire.
Will the built in hard drive be ok, or should I consider replacing it with a 7200 rpm drive, or get an external Firewire drive. PResumably, with only 1 firewire port on the Mac Mini I would need to find either a hard drive with 2 firewire ports to chain devices (which I've heard can be a problem) or perhaps get a firewire hub (similar problem?).
Currently I'm using a MacBook Pro with an internal 7200 rpm drive and this works fine (except when it gets low on hard drive space and I get dropped frames, leading to complete loss of the recording...).

Thanks - I just did a quick search and there are some Firewire 800/400 'bilingual' hubs around at reasonable prices.
I'm tempted to try the Mac Mini server, and perhaps have the 2 drives in a Raid 0 configuration. I could then have it backing up to a Time Capsule overnight (to mitigate the risk of using Raid 0).
Recording to an external drive might be useful though - as it would be a quick way of moving the data to a Mac Pro for compression for archiving. I find moving 10-20GB files over 802.11n to be very time consuming.
I'll certainly bear the dust in mind in terms of the risk to the Mac Mini (I've seen PC's having failed power supplies because the air inlets have been clogged with dust). My main concern however would be the risk of infection due to the fans causing air movement. There is an enclosed space it could be located, not great for cooling though.

  • How to record my voice by headphone on mac mini

    Hi all,
How to record my voice by headphone on mac mini. The headphone have a microphone. It can record on window 7, but on mac mini, it's not working.
I don't know why. Please help me.
    Thanks.

    Open Quicktime Player
    File Menu: New Audio Recording....
However... if the headphone/microphone combination has two 3.5mm jack plugs (pink and green) then the microphone output (pink) is "mic.level" - which is TOO QUIET for the audio input on a Mac, which is expecting the much stronger "line.level" signal strength.
Solutions: get a microphone pre-amplifier between the mic and the Mac (not cheap); or a different microphone with a USB interface.

  • Ipod mini voice recorder?

I am looking for a way to record voices with my ipod mini. Any suggestions?

I do believe there is a extra accessory where you can record noise straight onto your iPod, though i am not sure it is still out.
Or, you can just use GarageBand and export your recording to iTunes and add it to your iPod, if you have a PC, i am sure it would work with the voice recording program it has.
    Hope this helps.

  • Unable to record just audio with Mac Mini - no isight

I am trying to use Podcast Capture on a mac mini connected to a generic monitor (no isight) and it is unable to initialize the audio subsystem. I am assuming this has to do with it needing a video camera, but surely that isn't required to record an audio only podcast. I have a microphone plugged into the line in and it works successfully in Garageband. Please help!

Take a look at Soundflower, which will allow you to record audio from any source:

  • Can you use logic express on a mac mini for recording

Can i use logic exprees on a mac mini for recording? Ive seen alot of 8,12, and 16 track recorders with a cd burner and it seems like a logical and more productive gues for me to buy a macmini for the same thing of recording and then I can uses logic express, a far better program for recording. can the mac mini handle the load of processing tracks and how much ram should I uses? thanks tim

sorry, I'd like to butt in here:
I would like to do the same thing, so I am curious about this forum and rather than starting a new one, can I get some advice on this possibility:
    Mac Mini
    1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    80GB Serial ATA drive
    Glyph External HD 250 Gig
    Mackie Onyx 1620 w/Firewire
    Logic Pro 7.2
    thoughts?
The most number of tracks I could see at once would be 16.
Here is something I am most curious about...
    Firewire Hard drive
    Firewire Interface/mixer
    Firewire camera for FCP
    to much firewire?
Please let me know if you have other thoughts aswell...

thanks guys, this forum is fantastic!

Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.
PS: Perhaps the computer needs to go into Apple & have a genius
or product specialist at AASP test the unit thoroughly... BlueTooth?
