Mac Mini as Home Theatre (advice please)

Hi There,
I am considering a Mac Mini to connect to my TV as a Home Theatre device. I just found out that the latest model has no optical drive & so that is a real blow to me as it is a very important factor.
I have checked the older models & it seems the mid-2010 model might have what I need.
It would be great if someone could confirm that model will have what I need...
1) Must play PAL DVD & NTSC DVD (region2) directly. (My PS3 only plays NTSC, my xbox360 has died)
2) Must have bluetooth - either for trackpad or PS3 controller (i beleive snow leopard has native PS3 controller support)
3) Must have full HDMI output (audio+video)
4) Wireless would be best, but LAN connection is fine.
5) Must be a small device that can easily be moved from room-to-room.
6) Having a decent web browser capable of using Megavideo etc, would be big bonus.
With no optical drive, it would mean streaming a disc from my iMac but this inconveinience makes the Mini's price tag unviable for me, since playing these DVD's is the primary reason to buy.
I could of course save a lot of money & buy a region free dvd player, but i thought with the other benefits of web browser on tv it would be the ultimate solution.
How about Apple TV? Thats $99 & would stream. But will it stream a DVD from the iMac? & does it have a web browser?
For $99 the compromise would be worth it.
Although as I live in Japan & am originally from UK - Netflix etc is impossible for me.
Thanks for any advice or sugestions.

EG: If you are in USA (region1) & you insert a region 2 disc you will not be able to play it unless you change the region lock. You can do that, but only 5 times ever & then you will be locked to that region forever.
I dont know if this applies to laptops, even more dumb if it does, because of course in business you may need to travel to many regions with your job.
It does. It even applies to Apple's external dvd drive for the Airbook. Apple is mad to go along with the DVD cartel on this. It is not uncommon for people to have DVDs from 3 or more regions. It is simply NOT GOOD ENOUGH that their customers have to resort to workarounds like:
* buying extra DVD drives
* finding some other software to play DVDs
* various hacks to reset the region change count
* altering the firmware on the DVD drive (voiding warranty and risking damage to drive)
Basically, wasting a lot of time mucking around, just so that they can play a bloody dvd. Get your act together Apple, and show some respect for people who hand you bucket loads of cash to buy a product that is supposed to just work, like your marketing hype says it should.
This policy is imposed by the movie studios on hardware makers. However a lot of hardware makers now ignore this insanity. Unfortunately Apple have chosen to obey this.
To show you the level of insanity, Sony are one of the big Movie Studios, Sony of course also make DVD players. Guess what, their home DVD players are able to play multiple regions. So even Sony at least in part think DVD regions are nuts.
On Blu-Rays there is also a similar Region protection scheme. All the resellers think it is just as stupid as the DVD region scheme. In fact resellers make a specific point of advertising titles that are region free as region free (not all titles enforce this on Blu-Ray). If having a title region free is regarded as means of increasing legal sales by resellers, clearly this means region protection is harming sales.

  • I am considering purchasing the Mac mini for home studio audio production using Adobe Audition and a USB microphone.  Will the base mini model run these programs?

I am considering purchasing the Mac mini for home studio audio production using Adobe Audition and a USB microphone.  Will the base mini model run these programs?

The base mini has 4GB and a 5400 RPM hard drive. It is slow to start up and slow to launch large application such as Word (and I'd assume Adobe Audition) due to the slow drive. I've not used a new 4GB model, just the 8GB model, and the 8GB model (except for the slow drive) handles everything I've thrown at it, including running Photoshop, Word, Safari, and Mail at the same time but there is sometimes a delay switching between programs as the swapfile is updated. Overall I was not happy with the 5400 RPM drive (perhaps because I have MBA and iMac with Fusion drive) so I eventually upgraded it with an SSD. Now the mini is truly a warrior.

  • Which Mac mini for home server, Aperture & HTPC

    Hi,
I'm buying a Mac mini for:
    - home / small business server
    - Occasional HTPC usage (will be hooked to my TV via HDMI)
    - Occasional Aperture / iPhoto usage (minimal iMovie)
Which one is most suitable for this?
I was planing to go for Server  version (with bumped up RAM to 8GB), but now I read about video card and I'm not 100% anymore.
I will NOT use it for 3D - gaming or similar tasks!
    Thak you all for help!
    Vasja

I went for the non-server dual core i7 with AMD GPU and am very happy with it.  Do quite a bit of Aperture work and it never misses a beat (so far).  I'm not a fan of integrated Intel graphics and wouldn't trust it for HTPC duties.
I'm not sure how many/much of the 'server' functionality you're going to be using as it sounds more like file transfer and other tasks that could be accomplished through normal Lion.
Unless I'm missing something I assume the two hard drives in the Mini Server are just as much of a pain to replace as the one in the non-server Mini so I didn't see the point of having a two hard disc Mini.
For your requirements I would definitely look at how much of the server functionality you really need to utilise, and if the answer is 'not much' I'd recommend the i5 or i7 non-server Mini with AMD GPU and some sort of NAS, plus a sensible offsite backup plan for your data.

  • HDD Upgrade on a Late 2006 Mini - Some Pre Op advice please!

    Hi there
I'm looking to update the HDD in my Mac Mini (Model MA608LL/A) and would like a bit of advice and to ask a few questions on whether the drives I'm looking at are suitable.
The drives i'm looking at are:
    Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 250GB 2.5" SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache / Hitachi Travelstar 5K500 250GB 2.5" SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache
    Seagate ST9250315AS 250GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache / Seagate ST9250410AS 250GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache
Firstly my concerns are regarding the cache on the drive would the Mac Mini benefit from the having a 16mb cache? The original drive has a 8mb cache on it? Also one of the dives is a 7200rpm drive will the SATA controller on the MIni allow it to run at full speed or will the drive just run at 5400?
Secondly are there any unexpected things I need to know regarding changing the drive? I've built literally hundreds of desktop PC's (I work as a IT Tech at my local high school) and I have successfully taken apart a couple of mini's before to install new RAM so I feel quite confident in my ability to physically do the swap however it's always good to get some advice from people who are more experienced and have actually done this job. Are there any other sensors / cabling that would not need to be considered on a normal HDD swap on a PC? Also are there any specialist tools (other than putty knives!) I would need?
Any advice / warnings will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    John

More cache on the drive will always be a good idea. The 7200 rpm drives are also a better idea. Neither of these things are effected by the SATA controller in the mini. The controller only asks the drive for data, and the drive itself uses the larger cache and faster rotational speed to hand over that data faster. The only issue that would arise is heat, and many people have upgraded to 7200 rpm drives without any serious issues.
If you want some good visual guides to help you with the upgrade, there are free videos on OWC's website:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macmini_06-08_mem_hdopt/
And a very nicely illustrated guide on iFixit.com:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-Mac-mini-Model-A1176-Hard-Drive/11 08/1
There are some things to be careful of with respect to cables and drive temperature sensors which will be more obvious and easier to understand by using those visual resources.

  • Connect Mac mini and iMac... please!

Connect iMac and Mac mini... please
Posted: Jan 30, 2006 7:17 AM Reply Email
    Hi guys
I can't figure out how to make my iMac and Mac mini talk to each other... let me explain better...
I have a wired Linksys router that always worked ok connecting the iMac and a Windows XP... I used to connect them by SMB... I haven't been able to do the same with both Macs... do I have to enable "file sharing" or something?
Is there a way I can connect both macs wirelessly? even having a wired connection to the internet? both Macs have Blue Tooth and Airport ...
    What I want...
I want to be able to share a printer connected to the iMac and have both HD mounted ALL THE TIME on both machines... so I would be able to work on the mini and save to the iMac... share my iTunes library that stays on the mini...
I am only being able to share my internet connection using the wired router... that's it... I can't go farther than that... why?
Sorry for the dumb question... I know it is supposed to be quite simple but I got stuck...
    Cheers!

If you want the Mac's hard drives to always appear on each other's systems when they start up, you must have Personal File Sharing enabled on both systems. Once on, connect both Macs to each other, and click the little checkboxes next to the selected hard drive in the connection window. If each Mac requires a username and password, make sure to add those passwords to the keychain.

  • Mac Mini substitutes home server and apple tv?

I have a HP mediasmart home server to manage backups, remote access and such. As well as I have an Apple TV where i store my pictures, movies, music etc.
I wonder if the mac mini (+server) will be a good substitute for all that functionality?
    http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/mediasmart-server/

"But can it be both simultaneously?
Both a server and a media machine that is showing a movie on your TV?"
    Yes it can, no problems.
The Mini Server OSX is pretty much the same as the client Snow Leopard, complete with Front Row, iTunes, Mail, Safari etc, but no iLife09 supplied - you will have to pay extra for that.
It will do everything that Snow Leopard will do but has all the server capabilities too if you know how to set it up/use the software.
The only things I had trouble with was I can't find Migration Assistant and a strange quirk is that it won't share a USB connected printer across a network! No sign of printer sharing in System prefs but I guess you can do it via the Server config somewhere...
I just used CUPS to enable Bonjour printer sharing - works fine
I have been able to insatll everything I had on my previous CoreDuo Mini including Final Cut Express, iLife09, EyeTV, some bit torrent stuff - all works fine...
I really like the fact that I can plug two monitors in - I have the MiniDVI connected to a 50" plasma and 1080p Projector (using an HDMI splitter), the Mini Display port feeds a separate 20" widescreen monitor - when the plasma/PJ is switched off the main display automatically switches back to the 20" monitor
All in all this MiniServer is a great little HTPC - powerful and silent with 1TB of storage. The Server software is a bonus I haven't even looked at as yet

  • Mac Mini and AIR Travel - Experiences, Please

Hey people, can any of you share your experiences with bringing your Mac Minis on planes? I'll be carrying it on myself, no checked baggage. And please nobody say "FedEx" it or anything like that - it's not an option for me, going overseas. Too pricey.
I'll take any tips or stories. Thanks!

"what's the worst? They can't really just tell you you can't bring it on because they don't know what it is."
In USA, yes they can or at least not let you board. They will let you ship it or if lockers are availible out side security area store it till you return.
But ,if it is in your checked bagage it sails right thru....just a minor loop hole in the system that ,I guess, the Homeland Insecurity folks assume the bad guys won't think of.
Maybe; as a backup, if you take a flat shipping box and some bubble wrap you might be able to ship it by mail or FedX etc. at airport without missing your connection if worst case happens.

  • Cannot get airplay icon on mac mini 2012 (newer version-mountain lion) or on ipad2 (ios6.1) any ideas? Apple tv says to turn on home sharing, but mac mini says home sharing is on

Does anyone know if this is router issue that does not allow the conection between devices??
The ipad, mac mini and apple tv can access by themselfs the internet wirelessly!,

Start by rebooting everything, including router.  Take all cables out ATV for 30 seconds to.

  • Mac Mini, complete home station

When is Mac going to capitalize on what the mini is and include a blu ray player, applet tv software, and wireless base station capability all in one tidy package?!

You already have the "wireless base station" built in.
Make sure you're connected to a wired network, then click the Wi-Fi icon in the menubar, click Create Network, and do that. Or you could always go to System Preferences, click Sharing and turn on Internet Sharing. Either way's fine.
And there's always Blu-Ray via internal upgrades or external drives.
And there's always Front Row (or XBMC, Google it) instead of the tv software.
And the company's not called Mac. It's called Apple. They make computers called Macs. Get it right...

  • Macs and Java 1.6 -- advice, please?

    Hi everybody,
I have a Java application that I want to port across Windows, Mac, and Linux, but it uses Java 1.6, and from what I've been gathering from a day or two of research, Java 1.6 is fairly limited on Macs. Can anyone give me some advice on what I should do? I can't remember everything I use from 1.6 off the top of my head, but it's at least SplashScreen and FilenameExtensionFilter.
    Thanks,
    Jezzica85

Whoa, wait a minute. All the Macs in the last few years have been Intel 64-bit, without exception? How long is this "few years"? 2005? 2006? I haven't heard anything about that, where did you learn that? I would say 2007. Maybe a bit earlier. Apple totally dropped PPC at the start of 2006 and then started using 64 bit almost exclusively very soon after. I must admit that some of this is my conjecture but it seems to me that Apple didn't bother with a 1.6 non-64 bit because they didn't want to support and develop a newer Java on hardware they consider "obsolete".
If the Macs that handle 1.6 are 64-bit, why can't they handle dynamic library loading?I have absolutley no idea.

  • New Mac mini  - cannot get started - HELP please

    HI everybody
I am struggling to get started with my macmini. I have it attached to a cinema display and switched it on expecting to go through the start up procedure and registration which is usually so intuitive.
The screen shows a wireless mouse diagram indicating that I must insert batteries. Now I do use a wireless mighty mouse and I assumed that everything would talk to each other automatically. Is this where I am going wrong? I am certain that my mini comes with bluetooth but do I need to use a 'plug in' mouse to get everything up and running?
Many thanks in anticipation of your responses.
    Jill

After you put the batteries in the mouse, did you open the slider on the mouse to turn it on?
Try it again with the mouse powered up and on before you start the computer, sometimes there is a bit of a pause while communication is established.

  • Home Mac Mini Yosemite Server and Time Capsule

    Hello again,
I''m looking to have a Mac Mini Yosemite home server with my dot com pointed to my fixed IP.
I have a laptop, an iPad 2 and an iPhone 6 to manage in the beginning.
It's mostly to practice skills for employment purposes.
If I get the latest october 2014 Mac Mini with Server 4 and I want to back up the server on a Time Capsule 3 TB:
    Will it create big backups:
Some macs will be backed up to Mac Mini Yosemite Server Time Machine Services.
iPad and iPhone backed up in iTunes, on the server or the laptop?
What else can be a problem?
    François

    Hello DC,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
For the problem I try to anticipate, it was like those mac with Bootcamp, where Windows is one big file and a simple log on-log out on Boot Camped  Windows would change the big piece of bread and another complete multi GB would be backed up. the runaround was not to time-machine the Windows file and use a PC backup for the Windows stuff.
In the same vein, if users back up to the Mac-Mini server in a sparse image, does'nt that fill the backups of the server which is also a sparse image?
I agree with you that an external Time Machine HDD is more flexible as more than 3 TB can be needed down the road.
As for open ended question, effectively, you read it right, I am looking for problems I did not anticipate from user who bumped into them.
    Thanks

  • Seeking new Mac Mini monitor advice

I'm about to purchase a new Mac Mini i5. Any advice on an alternative monitor to the Apple 27 inch Thunderbolt monitor? I'm replacing an old 2006 24" iMac. Mahalo!

Unfortunately, GKaya, I don't have any advice beyond what you might find in some of those posts. I received my Mac mini on 12/14/12, and the Mac mini EFI firmware update had just come out 12/10/12. So I never had any flickering issues with a 26" 1080p Vizio TV or now a 27" 1080p AOC monitor, each in turn connected via HDMI. And I have not had the "crushed whites" issue that a few folks still have. I'm not sure what the issue there is. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary to avoid it. I just plugged the TV and the monitor straight into the mini's HDMI port with an Amazon Basics HDMI cable and used the default monitor settings.
And the picture is great. I eventually calibrated the picture with the AOC, but in the end, it made a very subtle difference, a matter of preference in brightness and temperature, not quality.
There are reports that the beta off OS X 10.8.3 fixes the remaining HDMI graphics issues, so here's hoping that you'll be rescued soon.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1222 ' 0.5 0.25 10 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1000 80 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

  • Mac Mini slow login

I wonder if anyone can help with this.
My Mac Mini, with a 256GB Samsung SSD installed just after purchase, has been very quick for the last 7 months. Suddenly the boot time has become painfully slow with a long delay until I can log in. After login all runs fine as far as I can tell. Here's what happens:
Power on - grey screen and spinning progress bar (this used to take 15-20 seconds but is now longer)
Login window appears but all buttons are unresponsive. Mouse cursor moves on screen but nothing clicks. Neither can one use keyboard shortcuts.
After a long wait the login buttons suddenly become active and I can enter password and proceed.
I have tried FSCK, permissions check, Disk repair and eventually reinstalled the OS, just in case, but the symptoms persist.
I suspect there is some background process that is holding up the startup process but I am unsure what it could be. Perhaps someone with a more expert eye could have a look at the console data below and see if they can spot what seems to be causing the lag. Seems to me not a lot happens between 16:19 and 16:26 when it all gets rolling again...
    Thanks for any help

Thanks Linc - I've uninstalled Sophos. Neither Sophos or SIMBL activity kicks in until after login though so my instinct is that the problem is more fundamental.
There is a much edited part of the latest console data below which covers the lag between appearance of login screen and the time it actually becomes active - 09:43 - 09:52. Can you see anything in there that might iondicate why it is hanging for 8 minutes? This is after a fairly long period of spinning progrees disk and Apple.
I've also noticed that Shutdown now seems quite extended too.
