Mac Mini, Audacity and recording from vinyl and CD

I'd like to record some of my vinyl and CD collection but I've tried following the Audacity instructions but I can't get them to work. Either I don't seem to have the right Line In / Line Out or I seem to have everything right but it just doesn't work.
I play my vinyl and CDs on separates that are hooked up to my mac via an R8 Jack (?). Is it possible to use audacity to record from them?

The Audio In port accommodates both digital optical input and analog audio input.
Analog audio line input is accepted through a 3.5mm mini phone jack. The sound input port accepts line-level stereo signals up to 24-bit stereo 44.1-192kHz sampling rate. It also accepts a stereo miniplug-to-RCA cable adapter for connecting stereo equipment to the computer.
Optical audio input is SPDIF format and uses a standard TOSLINK cable with a TOSLINK mini-plug adapter, accepting up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-96kHz sampling rate.
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there.

Recording from vinyl and normalizing?

Hey everyone, just signed up as I use this quite a bit and thought I'd firstly say thanks to everyone for putting that effort in and being helpfull.
I have been recording my old vinyl collection (Old Skool Garage woo!) and have been normalizing the recorded regions in the audio edit window through the factory drop down menu. The parts are always highlighted and has been working fine. (also read about normalizing and how its not cool to use it, but its a habit and will have to read up more before I stop!) Anyways, this particular recorded audio region will refuse to be normalized and I'm just wondering if anyone had any pointers.

I tried the search peak function but couldn't find any, I have 4 different audio regions that have been cut up from one take. All of them won't let me normalize them. I have used the same arrange window to record the tracks before these. I have just been deleting the audio once I have bounced them then recording the next one....

Importing from vinyl and tapes

I am about to buy my first iPod, a shuffle. What is the best way to import music from vinyl records, and cassette tapes? How do I do it exactly?
A lifetime of music and recrded material to be transfered.

One way is to connect your Turntable/Cassette deck (through the Tape out sockets of your amplifier) to the audio in socket of your computer. On the computer you'll need audio editing software to capture and edit the resulting long file into individual tracks that can be added to the iTunes Library. There are a number of commercial programs for this (I use Sound Studio for the Mac but there are Windows programs). If want to try out the process first you could try the open source program Audacity which has Linux, Mac and Windows versions at this link: Audacity
In addition to the software you'll need RCA to 3.5 mm audio plug cables to connect the Tape Out sockets of your amplifier to the audio inputs of your computer. If your Mac or PC hasn't got an audio in socket you can have a look at the Griffin iMic which connects to a USB port and comes with some software of it's own: iMic USB audio interface

Removing pops and clicks in MP3s recorded from vinyl??

I have some mp3s recorded from vinyl. I would like to know of any good software to take those mp3s and remove any pops/clicks/noise. I'm willing to pay for some good software. Please let me know what to look for, as I've never used any software to alter my songs.

There is a very good free-ware program called Audacity which has quite a good noise removal tool. You first profile the noise by selecting a section of just noise then get it to remove it, works quite well. As for clicks and pops in the old days when I used to edit quarter inch tape if you recorded a vinyl at 15 inches per second onto the tape you could actually edit out the click or pop with no discernible gap in the music. With audacity you could zoom right in and cut the clicks and pops out laborious I know. But trying to filter them doesn't work very successfully unless you are prepared to throw very large sums of money and use one of the devises or software made by somebody like Cedar.

I would think a 15" with the i7 CPU. You can get a 13" with the i7 CPU but the 15" has a dedicated graphic chip along with the intergrated one.
You will also need to upgrade the hard drive to a faster 7200RPM model instead of the standard 5400RPM model that comes with all MBPs. The Sibelius website recommends the 7200RPM or a SSD. You will also be better off installing 8GBs of RAM.
Both of those upgrades can be made after you buy a MBP for much less then Apple charges for the same upgrades and you get to keep the original RAM and hard drive.

How do I remove OSX/FkCodec-A from my Mac mini? I am running Yosemite and the path and file name is /Volumes/macvexe/macvexe.app/Contents/MacOS/mac.installer. Sophos was unble to remove and it will not go to trash.

Sophos found this on my mac mini (early 2009) - OSX/FkCodec-A and could not clean it up. I am running Yosemite 10.10 and the path and filename for this Trojan is /Volumes/macvexe/macvexe.app/Contents/MacOS/mac.installer. Could someone please tell me how to get rid of it as Sophos is unable to remove and Trash can remove it.

How did you originally install iWork on the Mac Pro? was it preinstalled? The machine seems old enough that you should have an original install DVD that came with the mac pro.

To move tables between sheets you can select the table, copy, then paste after activating (by clicking) the destination sheet. If you really mean move, then use the cut command (rather than copy).
To copy... use the menu item "Edit > Copy"
To cut... use the menu item "Edit > Cut"
Then paste in the destination

Hooking mac mini up to emac with firewire, and using emac as the display

Is this possible? Would it work to hook up the mac mini via firewire to the emac and use the emac disaplay to run the computer? Thanks

This is a question that is asked with remarkable regularity, and while it is possible to connect the two systems and to 'run' the mini either as a remote hard drive (a very expensive way of gaining slow external storage) or remote control it, the former is an inefficient use of the mini and the latter only allows you to open a window onto the mini from the host system, where performance is somewhat limited.
Better in this sort of situation to sell the old system and use the money to buy a new display for the mini, or if the old system is needed and funds very limited, to look for a used display.

All Mac Minis in my household cannot sleep and cannot shutdown wo rebooting

Hi everyone, I am hoping for community help here with a very annoying issue. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.6 two Mac Minis in my household in Australia (and one 30,000 km away in Germany) refuse to go to sleep (instantly waking up) AND refusing to shut down, instantly rebooting.
They span 3 generations of Mac Mini (2011 = brand new, 2009, 2007) and all have the same problem. Some have no peripherals connected, others have plenty. I've already cleaned out all login items and any other unix daemons/schedulers that I thought should not be running from ancient apps that are no longer on these machines.
This only happened in 10.6.6 - my Macbook Pro is completely unaffected by this weird bug.

Hmm, looks like I've solved the sleep problem. Paradoxically, ACTIVATING the "wake for network access" option in Energy Saver actually makes all my sleep functions (both timed and manually activated) work like a charm again go figure, at least on one of my machines (now trying it on the others)... still haven't solved the automatic reboot problem though....

Note: Oracle 10g now supports ANSI standard outer joins as in:

Problem with Adobe Audition 2.0 and recording from a 1212m.

I bought a brand new machine and have be configuring it all week. Everything has been going well, except getting Adobe Audition 2.0 (the new version) to “hear” sound from the 1212m.
The intel 975 motherboard has an integrated HD sound system already on board and I have been able to get adobe audition to recognize it and record from it. This is what I have Windows XP Pro set to as my default sound card.
I installed the 1212m and I have gotten my monitors to work by using the XLR jacks on the monitors to the ¼ inch jacks on the 1212m using a VST (NI’s Kontakt 2) as the audio source. So it works.
What I can’t seem to get to work is getting Adobe Audition to “hear” the sound coming from the 1212m.
Patchmix seems to be working ok. The audio bars jump each time I hit a note on the keyboard.
I have configured Audition by going to Audio Hardware Setup and setting it to EMU ASIO and tried every combination of INPUT and OUTPUT, but when I hit the Record button in Audition it just flat lines..
I was hoping that once the audio made it from the VST though the 1212m and out to the speakers, that getting Audition to record it would be easy, but that hasn’t been the case.
The Intel 955 Extreme Edition and the 975 motherboard are brand new and I’m worried that being on the bleeding edge of technology, that one of the drivers isn’t working correctly and causing me hours of debugging a problem that is unworkable from my end.
Hopefully the problem is just some small stupid thing that I’m doing or failing to do (like normal).
Any ideas would be helpful.

I'm just saving it into a file in "My documents" on the internal hard drive. It's a computer in the office which has been used my other people before me and I have my own file which I was always able to save Adobe sound files into before, so I don't think it's anything to do with me not being allowed or read-only.
I've also been trying to save it onto USB hard drives. This works when I save it under a different name, but not when I'm just trying to update a file i've been working on. Basically I have to create a new file everytime I add something, so like "myaudit1", "myaudit2", "myaudit3" etc etc, even though it's the same piece of work just updated.

FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTune (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTune and plug (very important)
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTune has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTune.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...

When I attach a monitor to it, I saw all the buttons and menus stopped responding too. I can only push and hold the power button on the box to shutdown.
It only started happening recently.

Found that the second hard drive is broken. I have to go to the apple store to have it replaced.
I had to press the power button to turn the server off for several times, then the broken hard drive went disappeared. After that, I had to disable the Spotlight. Then the server went back to work normally.
Now I made a CCC copy of the primary hard drive, and would like to have the server run on the external raid disk (connected through thunderbolt). Does anyone have previous experience with it? Any expectable drawback or issue with this setup?

No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

I've already got external drives but I take my mini back and forth to work and don't want to carry those drives with me.

I went to Crucial's website and they can't tell me what drives fit my Mac Mini. That's where I got my ram (8GB). I'm ONLY interested in name brand quality HDDs.

The limiting factor in your 2009 mini is the max 9.5mm drive thickness.
One of the largest capacity 2.5" drives that meets this criteria is the HGST (formerly Hitachi) at 1.5GB
Any reputable SATA HDD you can find that is not thicker then this 9.5mm will work.
