Mac mini bleeps three times at start up.why?

I am having trouble with my mac mini recently.  I understood three bleeps usually means RAM problems?
Intermittant problem as it did boot a couple of times.
Fitted new RAM  but no change. Any more advice welcome?

Mac computers: About startup tones
3 successive tones, a 5 second pause (repeating): This indicates RAM does not pass a data integrity check.
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones: Indicates EFI ROM corruption is detected and the computer is in EFI ROM recovery mode.
If memory, problem try one stick in just one slot. Try different sticks and different slots since maybe you have a slot problem

My new Mac mini (3 month) didn't start up, all that appeared was a white screen and a flashing folder with a question mark inside it.
I followed by recommendations from 'Everything Mac': "shut it down by pressing and holding the power button for about 5 seconds.
Then hold down the Option key and press the power button again to start up the Mac mini. Keep holding down the Option key until
    the Mac mini starts up."
But I got a Wi-Fi button only to chose and connect the local network. I connected to my network and I can't use this connection
    becouse no icons.
    Could you please help me?

Your Mini (running 10.6.4) should have come with grey-colored install disks. Now is the time to put them into service. Turn on your computer so that there is power to accept disk #1 into the optical drive. Once  the disk is in the drive, shut off the computer by holding the start button down until it powers off. Then turn it on this time holding down the "C" key to make the computer boot from the disk. The question mark that you saw indicates that the computer cannot find a bootable volume. This can happen due to corrupted system files or an improper shutdown etc. Once you are in the "Installer" you can choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu in the menu bar. Use it to repair the disk and to see if that can solve your trouble.

  • MacBook Pro Beeps Three Times on Start-Up

I recently got a used MacBook Pro from my uncle, so I would have a laptop for college. When I start it up (with a new Snow Leopard install disc), it beeps three times. I've looked this up to determine it's an issue with the RAM, so I bought a new 8GB stick from OWC, and installed it. It is still beeping three times on start-up.
When I boot without the start-up disc I just get a flashing folder with a question mark in it (no OS found, that's why I need the install disc).
It no longer has a service contract (from early 2011).
Help on why this thing is beeping at me would be appreciated.

What kind of RAM is in the second memory chip slot?
Usually these are sets of two, and matching is best.
•Maximum Memory    16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    •Memory Slots    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Rarely would anyone install only one RAM chip, and
when a computer such as yours can use say, 8GB a
credible path to 8-GB would be two 4-GB/matching.
Or if you had a good 2 or 4 GB chip, it could occupy
the second slot for a slightly uneven workable match.
{What were the two RAM chips removed from the MB/Pro?
    ...At this point, I'd venture to guess they probably are OK.}
And there can be an issue even with RAM of the same
spec numbers, some of them for a PC or iMac will not
do well in an Apple portable, though of similar spec.
However I get the impression there is a hardware failure
at some other point, to include a bad hard disk drive..
A diagnostic is recommended since most usual startup
sequences do not work; so troubleshooting isn't possible
in the sense that most users would be able to at home.
Also a retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should be of a
newer version than the one your MacBook Pro shipped
with, since the original system discs would have been
one of two Snow Leopard versions. However being
unable to boot from the DVD and have it run the Mac
the issue may be a logic board failure, if not RAM.
    •Original OS    Mac OS X 10.6.6 (10J3210)
    •Later OS    Mac OS X 10.6.7 (10J4139)
    {specs from http://mactracker.ca database}
Anyway, perhaps another volunteer contributor has
ideas that may work, so I have to go about other
obligations and have to go offline now.
PS: I just noticed your other post, and Recovery
could be helpful, but may rely on the Apple ID
of the previous owner if an older OS X 10.7 or
later was installed & still present in the MB/Pro.
Usually a purchased code was involved in a
new install of Lion, via the Mac App Store while
MacBook, etc was running in SL OS X10.6.8...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac

How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac?
The question pretty much says it all.
I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
    All systems are running 10.6.8.

Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

  • Mac mini flashes light but wont start.

So i have the newest mac mini i7 with ssd (apple care) but i also upgraded to 16gb crucial memory.  Recently, the mac mini won't start up correctly.  For about 20-30 minutes the light (on the mac mini, no input to display) will flash on and off and then it will eventually turn on when I walk away and come back.  I'm not an expert, but I don't believe this should have anything to do with the memory.  There is also a wierd sound that the mac mini makes when trying to start.  I'm assuming thats bad since it is a ssd.  Any ideas which part is damaged or what might be wrong?

Did it work for you before today?
Yes, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. You do even need AppleCare for the free appointment

  • New HD and new motherboard on Mac Mini and OSX will not start.

Long story but will do my best to keep it short...
Purchased Mac mini #1 at CompUSA years back and bought their extended warranty. Mini died 2+ years later which coincided with CUSA going out of business. Problem was a flashing folder with the Mac logo and a "?" at startup. My CUSA store was closing out and would not service my machine and gave me a phone number for the outsourced warranty/repair department. The tech took my info and decided a new HD was in order. I rec'd the new HD in the mail and a local tech came out and installed it (but refused to test it). After the tech left the same problem was found. Called warranty department immediately (literally 5 minutes later) and they siad they would send another HD as well as a mother board which I recieved a few days later. However, this time the local tech never showed back up and after a few weeks of calling the warranty number went dead. We ended up getting a new Mac mini which has been running fine since.
My daughter needed a computer so I figured I would give it a shot. It was actually very easy to replace the HD and MB. I tried starting the mini and it powers up but I got the same flashing folder so I put in the OS intall disc and after I select the language, I get a prompt that says "This software cannot be installed on this computer". I am using the original discs that came with this particular mini. I cannot get disc #1 out of the drive now but disc #2 says "Mac OSX Install Disc 2", "includes Mac OS9.2", and Disc version 1.3 2Z691-5533-A" on it. The mini itself says Mac mini 1.25G4/512MB/40GB/Combo/Modem on the underside.
Is this due to the fact that the entire inside of the Mini is new and now not compatible with the original software? How would I know what software to buy? Am I better off just taking it somewhere to get serviced or calling it a total loss? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

One the one hand I am being told that my OS discs are not working because they are unique (or keyed) to the original machine and since that machine essentially no loger exists due to repalacing the MB, I will need to purchase new software with a new license agreement.
It is true that computer specific install software is specific to the software with which it shipped. However replacing the logic board means that the new logic board is part of the computer. Unless the logic board was not an exact replacement, it should not make a difference; the original disks should work. In other words it has to do with the hardware not the license. The software license agreement allows the installation of a certain OS to one computer at a time, unless you have a multi-user license such as a family pack, which allows installation in up to five computers in the same household. The original computer specific software can be installed on a single computer no matter how many times. If that OS in that computer has been upgraded to a later OS, that installer can be used to install to another computer of the identical model so long as it is not simultaneously installed elsewhere. However, even then, it can technically be installed on another computer of the same model although installation of a single user licensed software will be a violation of the terms of the Software License Agreement.
The second opinion was that the original mini was equippmed with a powerpc processor and that the new MB I received is equipped with an intel processor.
True. Models of the mini released in 2005 and Early 2006 have PowerPC processors. Late 2006 and later have Intel processors.
Therefore, that pesron recommended that I purchase OSX 10.5 Leopard as this OS will cover both of those processors.
    Partly true.
    i. If your mini was released with Tiger it will support OS X 10.5x and later. If it was released in Early 2009 with Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G2030) it will only support versions of Leopard earlier than 10.5.6 and, certainly OS X 10.6x.
ii. It will only both computers if you have a multi-user license.
iii. New Leopard installers will only install on your old mini if the original installer itself was the problem. If the problem is elsewhere, it is not quite as certain. Unfortunately there is no sure way to know that unless you buy the Full Retail Version of Leopard and attempt installing it.

  • Problem migrating to new Mac mini Server from Time Machine Backup

I sell my old Mac mini Server and after I purchase the new one (unibody). I had the Time Machine Backup but I'm not able to restore it to the new mac mini. I started it with the Server Install DVD into it and I went to Utility menu to choose "*Restore from Time Machine backup*" but it said that *it was not possible to restore the backup to this machine because its a different hardware, and suggested to use Migration*. So I restarted it and when it asked me to choose between "setting up a new server" or "transfer information from an existing server" I chose this last. In the next menu didn't appear any Time Machine backups so I mounted the time machine backup and copied the Latest hd backup to an external firewire hd and I connected it to the new one. In the migration menu list appeared my backup but there was a *yellow triangle icon* over it and the message "*Migration is not supported from servers which are configured to use dynamic network addresses. Configure the source system to have a manual network address and try again*". But how can I config a static address into my backup if I can't restore it into a machine? I don't have anymore the old mac mini to restore the backup and make any change in the configuration!
Any one can please help or give me suggestions?
    Many thanks

    I solved it!
I changed the network settings by editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
So I successfully restored my SL server installation, but now I have an issue with Ethernet and SD reader. See this post if you are interested:

  • Mac Mini Restarting Multiple times per day

I have a Mac Mini from Sept 2010.  Recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and now the restarts due to an issue several times per day.  The computer is fine when i am using it, but the issue comes up when i return to wake the monitor by hitting a key or moving the mouse.  Sleep is disabled, but the monitor is set to turn off after 10 minutes of inactivity.  Sometimes it will be fine left for hours on its own and other times when i come back to the computer, I am met with a gray screen stating the computer had to restart.

    Thanks for the reply, den.thed.
I tried the first suggestion, resetting the SMC, but after this the problem continues.
I think the issue is related to the second, kernel panicking.
As for suggestions 3 and 4, i have my energy settings as you show in your post, with monitor sleep after 15 minutes, computer sleep never and none of the options checked.  While the computer does not sleep, this is only an issue when i step away from the computer for a while and come back, not when i am actively using it.
The latest error message is as follows, and seems to indicate a kernel panic (or several).

  • HT204350 I,m going to change my Mac mini server and time capsule at the same time what's the best way to transfer from both of my old machines

I've just purchased a new Mac mini server and also a new time capsule is there any easy way to ghost or transfer the new machines at the same time or is it best to do one at a time?

I have no direct experience transferring a TC and computer at the same time, but prudence tells me to do one, test to be sure it is correct only then do the other. It will take twice as long from process start to finish, but avoids any nasty surprises at process end. In close to 40 years experience, I have never seen a "crash conversion" (everything at the same time) that did not have at least one major disaster. I am sure it can happen but the odds are heavily against it. Patience is a virtue!

  • How to power on Mac Mini at scheduled time ?

Is there any way I can get my Mini Mac to power itself on at a scheduled time of day ?
Then when it powers on, I want to execute a program, how's that done too ?
    Thanks for any help.
    Kind regards
    Dan

Hello dfreer. In the Energy Saver Preference Pane in System Preferences, you can schedule your mini to wake from sleep or startup at a scheduled time every day by clicking the "Schedule" button.
To start a program at startup, just go into the Accounts Preference Pane, and click the "Login Items" to add an application to open automatically at startup. To do anything fancier with this application when it opens, you might need to look at Automator or Applescript.

  • How do I backup my MacBook Pro and Mac Mini to 1TB Time Capsule

I cannot backup my MacBook Pro (osx 10.8.2) on Time Capsule using Time Machine. The following Time Machine error message appears: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/BARBARA’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. There is no problem when I use Time Machine to backup Mac Mini (osx 10.6) on same 1TB Time Capsule.

See > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html Do it on the Mac that shows that error message

  • Cannot use my Mac Mini server as Time Machine server

    Hello,
May some one can help me...
I try to connect clients to a time Machine server, well it's seems to be a bit difficult, I created user's accounts, computers accounts, group of computers... It works for the update services, but after configuring Time Machine on the server, shared in server admin, in Workgroup manager, file sharing, preference pane, user's services... I can see the volume in time machine preferences, but there is always the same issue, first message is "the disk is not reachable" second "there is a probleme with the network name and password" I tried with different posix, ACLS, with user's password, server admin password, directory admin password... Well I'm a bit tired...
I tried on the server and on a Promise 4To, I can see the shared items folder and the Backups foledr and that the only thing I can do...
Well if some one can help me it will be great for me and for every body arround me...
    Thanks,
    Nicolas

    Hello Peter,
    Thanks for your answer.
There must be something wrong in the different steps I follow.
Firts I set Time machine on the server for each user, shoosing the Volume "SmartStor" (a network volume attached on the Mac Mini server) it creates a "Shared items" folder with a "Backups" folder in.
In Server Admin tools I can see in the AFP services the share point /Backups
In Workgroup Manager I set the Time Machine's preferences for the different computers and computers' group with the path afp://myserver.local/Backups/
At least on my client's computer I can shoose the volume "Backups" "on my server".
And it doesn't work... even with all the logins and password, User's, Dir Admin and Server Admin.
With User's and Dir Admin it runs quickly and tells "the volume is not reachable on account of wrong user's name or password"
With Server Admin login and password it runs indefinitly, nothing occurs ...
Is there something to do in terminal ?
Well I tried to find explanations on the web but I found nothing for the moment... The informations are to set a network volume in Terminal in place of the default one...
'Hope to find soon, I can't stand that something runs for every one but not with me...

  • How big of an external disk do I have to use to back up my mac mini using the time machine app?

I have a new Mac Mini, and I wanted to begin using time machine to back up my files.  I tried to use an external hard drive that is used for our other machines (PCs) and it would not allow that hard drive to be used b/c it did not have a valid file structure.  I did not know how to fix that, so I was going to buy another external hard drive to support backing up the Mac Mini with OSX10.8.1 and a 500GB hard drive.  I saw somewhere that as lonmg as I had twice the RAM (4GB) it should be ok, but that seemed to be too small.  I was considering buying a 500GB if necessary.
Does anyone know if I can use a small 8GB flash drive to support the backups or do I need a 500GB or similar external hard drive to backup the Mac Mini with time machine?
    Thanks.

It is recommended that Time Machine has its Own Dedicated Hard Drive that is at least Twice the size of the Drive(s) you intend to Backup.

  • MAC MINI (Intel 2GHz version) - NOT STARTING!!!

I have a MacMini Intel 2.0Ghz which I barely used. . . I thought the other day to fix it on another TV perhaps it would be used more in the living room area. . . But it would not start up. . . I am not sure what happened. Tried another adaptor and still same. . . Tried RESTING SMC but still same. . . So some told me is the LOGIC BOARD!!!! Shoooooooooot!!!! can it be the LOGIC BOARD burns so quick!?!?! Kindly if you had similar experience or know what could be going on, please let me know. Thanks.

My second Intel Mac Mini will not start after a normal shutdown. No response or sound. My first dead mini was 3 months past warranty and they said it is the logic board. When a logic board is half the cost of a new one it is hard to justify. I now may have to get a new logic board to be able to retrieve the data on the two mini hard drives. I would welcome any suggestions. Should a buy a new mini and use it to retrieve the data on the two dead mini hard drives or just get a new logic board? Yes, I tried re-setting the SMC. Is it possible the internal battery is causing the problem?

I'm a bit confused here so I hope to clear things up in your post.
You're Device is listed as Z10 (unless you've updated within the last 2wks of this post).
    Mac Desktop?
    - did you mean BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac?
    - or did you mean Z10 BB10 OS updated to 10.1? (which provider)
If on Z10 you mean you updated to 10.1 I hope you're not using a leaked BB10.1 release (that's going to cause you nothing but issues down the road if you're not sure what you're doing, trust me i thought I did myself lol).
    Keyboard:
Have you checked in Settings > Keyboard for any entries you custom added or shortcuts that auto correct? If you're not sure you can clear them ALL out, close your apps on your Z10 and retry say an email with a paragraph and see if that fixes it?
