Mac mini boot failure - help

mine is a 1.5g core solo mini with 512 mb ram, last night i had a power failure after which the mini wouldn't boot, i hear the start up chime, it goes to the grey screen and stays there for a while and retarts again.... and its a non stop loop, safe boot wouldn't work, so does the reset of pvram, disk repair through tiger dvd, single user mode.... nothing happens, help me out

When you boot from the Tiger disc and repair the hard drive using DiskUtility, does DiskUtility report success, or does it finish with an error message?

  • Mac mini boot failure

    Hi all,
My G4 mini running 10.4 won't boot. I've tried numerous key sequences after the opening chime but have had no success in getting anything to appear on the screen. I also tried the original OS DVD but since I can't get to an open boot prompt, it doesn't help much. The other peculiar thing is that the fan goes on full blast as soon as it is turned on.
Before this problem I was using it as a headless music server connected to my stereo. I used VNC to connect to it and run iTunes. I can't remember doing anything out of the ordinary to it - but it has been a few months since it started doing this.
I'll probably take it to a service centre since its unlikely that I'll be able to do anything if no video signal is being generated.
If anyone else has suffered a similar problem, I'd be interested in knowing what the problem turned out to be.

Sadly no, that doesn't look good - though the fact the power light comes on solid, and you get the usual chime but no beeps means that the system is passing it's power-on self test, which one would normally infer means it is in generally healthy condition.
Clearly yours is not. The combination of fan running at full blast immediately the power button is pressed and the lack of apparent video output is often associated with a failed logicboard - though that is not a surprise since almost every component in the system is on the board, and similar symptoms have been caused by relatively innocuous problems, such as a loose or failed airport card.
It may be hard to tell with the fan running full blast, but after the mini starts up, does it appear to make any of the usual boot noises? If it does, such as the hard drive spinning and reading, then it may be that the system is actually attempting a start. You mentioned that you tried the original install disk - did the drive spin up to speed and sound like it was attempting to read?
If you feel a little adventurous, you might consider opening up the system and making sure everything is tightly connected. Short of checking all components are correctly connected and then a complete disassembly and reassembly however, there is very little that you can do. You could, however, at least test whether there is enough of the system left working by removing the RAM and then attempting a boot. Instead of the chime, you should get a series of beeps which show the power-on self test is being failed.
Unless there have been indications that the system is attempting a start and simply not outputting video, while running the fan up to full speed, it's likely that the only option is to have it checked over by an approved service provider - though beware that many would diagnose it as a failed logic board and want to replace that before they examine anything else!
Before taking it is, try a PMU reset, just to make sure you've covered all the obvious possibilities - I've not come across a PMU issue that caused such an array of faults, but it won't do any harm to try.
To reset the PMU of your G4 mini:
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.

  • Mac Mini boot failure - hangs at FireWire ?

    Mac Mini mid 2010 model
    Running Mountain Lion
After 10 weeks of no usage booted OK into ML.  Updated Airport Utilites.  Crashed.
Hangs on boot at log + gearwheel.
    Will not boot via recovery
Will not boot in Target Mode
Verbose boot appears to hang on FireWire load, i.e. Last line repeated at 3 min intervals
FireWire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5901 built-in: no valid selfIDs for more than 3 minutes after bus reset.
    Hardware Fault ?
If software how to acess Hard drive to repair ?

Executed single user boot and confirmed drive is OK.
As unit is second hand do not have original instal DVD.  Tried booting using MacBook Pro Snow Leopard DVD which ran through to language selection then rejected hardware (as it should).  Tried iMac Leopard DVD but not luck.
Connected Ethernet to router (& Internet) and tried recovery boot via apple servers but same result.  EFI probably not patched.   A further verbose boot would show Ethernet port connected and then not (when cable removed).  Still hanging at FireWire port as original post.
    Booted in Safe Mode with verbose and saw FireWire active on earlier line in log but still hangs after following with no further text ;
    MSMOS arrived
airport:link down on en1. Reason 8 (disassociated due to station leaving)
    En1::IO80211 Interface::postMessage bssid changed
    000000000 000000020 NVEEthernet::setLinkStatus - not active
Stumped.  Will contact local apple repair outfit and see if they have correct instal DVD.
Question - Can an image of the instal DVD be download ?

  • Mac Mini boot up problem.

Recently, I started to come across a rather annoying problem. Whenever I start my mac mini, boot menu comes up as if "alt" key was pressed. I choose HD and then mac mini boots normally. I suspected an imminent HD failure and  checked the HD for errors with OSX built in disk utility and third party SMART utility. Nothing seems to be wrong with volume and smart tests are OK. While the OSX is running, I don't see any unusual problems like stalls, beach ball or so. Any ideas appreciated.
Mac mini 3,1 OSX SL 10.6.8.

No, I doubt it's a hard drive failure although that cannot be ruled out yet. I would first consider doing a reinstallation of OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Let's see if that fixes the problem. Any chance you have another keyboard you can try? In case this doesn't help.
BTW, are you really a physicist? If so what specialty?

  • Mac Mini boots to flashing folder

I experience a hdd failure of my mac mini, about a week ago. Ordered a new SSD and replaced it. I then went to a buddies house and put OSX Lion on a thumb drive. Tested it, and it booted on his machine. Now, my mac mini boots to a flashing folder, and I hold the option button upon boot (same sequence I used to test the thumb drive and successfully booted to it) and nothing happens. I just get the same flashing folder and no ability to reference to it. After so long, the system times out and shuts down.
    So to conclude,
Mac mini hdd crash. New BLANK ssd installed. Mac mini does not give the option to boot to usb, only flashes gray folder with question mark. Holding option to get boot menu does not work.
Suggestions? I was originally going to burn the OS to a disc, but his machine spit out my blanks.

If you are refering to something created using Recovery Disk Assistant,
it will only work on the machine it was created on.  If not, how was it
created?  In most cases, it may not work on machines or show up
on a machine that did not have Lion installed natively.

  • Mac Mini boots very slow with Mavericks (after security update)

    Hi,
my Mac Mini boots very slow after I've installed Maveriks. I did two clean installs by now, seemed to work OK after the second one but after the latest safety update (2014-002) the boot time is up to 5+ minutes. Starting Safari or other software takes addtional time. See below for system specs, Etrecheck and log. Any ideas what could cause this? According to the update history I did install the security update 2014-002 twice on the same day although I cannot remember doing such a thing.
    Thanks Joerg

  • Can Mac Mini boot XP from an External HD ? ? ? ?

    Hi All,
    Just a quick question.
I have a recently deceased PC. RIP.
I was able to salvage my boot drive with much of my media content.
I would very much like to buy a Mac Mini to use as a PC / Media Center.
Can a Mac Mini boot Windows XP from an external drive?????
thanks to any who can answer this question,
or possibly point me to more info .
    best regards

    Hi,
without the preperations to be made, that are outlined in the link I gave, Windows always tries to read and write certain files during bootup, which it can't find when you 'only' have a Windows on an external HD.
I only know of these instructions to get Windows on external HDs to work.
If it weren't for games you like to play, I would suggest to have a look at the 'Virtualization' apps like Parallels or VMWare Fusion.
But these aren't good for playing games.
    Sorry
    Stefan

  • Can Mac mini boot into 64-bit kernel

    http://macperformanceguide.com/SnowLeopard-64bit.html says:
To determine if your Mac has 32-bit or 64-bit firmware, copy/paste the following command into Terminal:
    ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
    ...output:
    | | "firmware-abi" = <EFI64>
As shown above, the firmware-abi has the value EFI64, indicating that my Mac Pro is 64-bit capable. If it reads EFI32, then your Mac cannot be booted into a 64-bit kernel.
...well, my Mac mini displays that EFI64 64-bit info, but when booting with the "64" keys down it nevertheless uses the 32-bit kernel.
So can the Mac mini boot into 64-bit kernel?

What you are missing is that Apple has written into the boot ROM for certain Macs which meet the criteria to not be able to boot with the 64-bit kernel. The Mac mini is not allowed to boot into 64-bit mode by Apple. There is a list of non-pro Macs hard coded into the EFI boot firmware that tells it not to allow these Macs to boot into 64-bit mode. The Mac mini is on the list! Try as you may the Mac mini will not do it without a hack.
If you google this issue you can find a hack to rewrite the boot firmware and allow the mini to boot into 64-bit mode. It can be dangerous to your mini if you make a mistake!
    Here is one hack;

  • Mac Mini HDD failure, no CD/DVD drive...How do I boot?

My hard drive failed on my Mac Mini 2011. I don't have a CD/DVD drive on it. How do I boot to the disk utility ore restore utility?
I downloaded and installed the mac remote boot on a thumb drive, using my wifes mac. I've tried rebooting my mac with the thumb drive in and nothing but grey screen. I tried by holding down the Command button, nothing but grey screen. I tried by holding down the Command+S, nothing but grey screen. I tried by holding down the Command+R, nothing but grey screen.
The hard drive is making a bunch of loud clicking noises.
If I buy a new drive and install it, how do I get the OS onto it and get it up and running, if the Command, Command+R do not work?

Once your hard drive crashes there is nothing you can really do.  The recovery partition is on your hard drive do the Command keys will not find the recovery partition.  It will also check your usb, dvd, and firewire ports.  If there is nothing there, then it is just a grey screen.  So....
1st Option bring you Mac Mini, after you replace your hard drive, to an Apple Store and have them reinstall the OS.  They will not charge you for this or least they did not for me when my hard drive crashed.  The only fall back is that they will only put the OS that the computer came with.  So, if it came with Lion, Apple will only install Lion.
2nd Option is to find a friend with a Mac (any mac) and have him/her create a usb boot drive that has the OS.  If you google "OS X Boot Drive" you will find a bunch of how to sites.  You will need atleast 8GB usb drive.
3rd Option is to buy the Apple branded Lion USB drive.  Not my most favorite but it is an option.

  • Mac Mini boots and runs very slo-o-o-wly

I bought my Mom a Mac mini with Intel Core Solo processor. I live in another city, and was last in front of the computer in February. I came for a visit yesterday and last night noticed the screen seemed to be frozen on the screen saver. I turned the monitor off and went to bed. When I came to look at the computer this morning it was frozen at a Mozilla Firefox upgrade install. I learned from my Mom that my sister, who is not particularly computer literate, used the computer last, about two weeks ago, to try and download some pictures. I'm writing for help, using my Powerbook.
I've spent the past five hours trying to get this mini to start and operate normally. From total shutdown to booted up and "ready" ( I use the term loosely) for use takes about 15 minutes. The first thing I noticed was the Logitech Bluetooth mouse was not working. I changed the batteries and now it seems to be working, although through every one of the approx. 30 reboots I've done today, the system initially cannot find the mouse, but manages to work after about four minutes of a spinning cursor. To launch an application, say, System Preferences, takes about five minutes from mouse click to mouse click.
I tried going to Disk Utility to try and repair the hard drive, but Repair Disk is grayed out. I tried using Software Update, figuring it would optimize the disk in the process. After downloading a list of available updates, I tried running only the Mac OS X update (OS X 10.4.8 now), but it broke with an error message saying the volume could not be updated. There is a file on the desktop named "file001.zip", which leads me to believe there is a corrupted file on the disk somewhere, but when I drag it to the trash I get an error message saying it cannot be deleted.
I pulled out the manual, and tried booting from the original install disk. I followed the instructions and tried repairing the disk from there, but I got an error message saying that wouldn't work either (memory getting kind of hazy; I've been at this quite a long time). In other words, nothing I try works. My deepest suspicion is that something is wrong with a volume, partition, partition table, partition map, or something like that. On the desktop is a disk icon named "Macintosh HD", and if I'm not mistaken it should have a user name instead, just like on my PB the same icon is named "Jims HD". I would be grateful for some other ideas or avenues to explore. I'm leaving town in the morning so if it's going to come down to erasing and reinstalling from the original disks, I'd better get started on that soon. Thanks.
    Jim

The easy bit first - the 'Macintosh HD' label on the drive icon is perfectly OK. You can change the name to just about anything you want, but by default the drive is called Macintosh HD, and doesn't change to the user's name (or anything else) without the user's intervention.
As to the other issues - it does sound suspiciously like the drive has issues, or the MacOS install is malfunctioning. Unfortunately, you can't repair the drive you boot from, so while you can run Disk Utility from the hard drive and 'verify' it, to see if it reports any errors, you can only repair it by booting from the original install disk that came with the system (or another viable boot volume if you have one on an external drive for example).
It seems to me that unless the system has already accumulated user data and files, the easiest way to deal with this is simply to insert the original install disk and reboot with the C key down, then do an Erase and Install. Note that this will delete all data, so if there is anything on the system of importance, it will need to be backed up. After the erase and install, and before installing any software, run the system for a while to make sure it's OK, including Disk Utility to verify the hard drive is fully functional.
If you prefer to take the diagnostic approach, the first step is to boot to the original install disk and run Disk Utility from there, with the repair disk option selected for the internal drive. You will likely need a wired keyboard to get the system to boot from the optical drive because with many BT/cordless keyboards, the driver isn't loaded until AFTER the point at which the C key boot modifier stops being recognized.
If you can't get the system to boot to the install disk, or if Disk Utility reports errors it can't repair, post again with as much detail specific to the issue as you can.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Mac Mini / Boot Camp / XP Pro / Black Screen with DVI display

Boot camp partitioned the hard drive on my new Mac Mini and restarted after I clicked Start Installation, but came up to a black screen. No blue installation screen, nothing.
I downed it with the power button and unhooked the display from the DVI port. I went and got a VGA cable instead and hooked it up via the DVI/VGA adapter and started up again with the Option key. Chose the Windows XP Pro SP2 installation CD and it went through the Windows installation OK.
The trouble is this Norwood Micro HD17A (17" widescreen) looks TERRIBLE on VGA whether I run Windows or Mac OS, because there's no selection for 1280 x 768 resolution. It looks great on DVI both on Mac OS and in Windows once I get XP Pro to load.
After logging in to Windows I can unhook the VGA cable and adapter and reconnect the monitor using the DVI. The moment I do this Windows looks great, with native resolution supported and everything's fine. But this is a terribly cumbersome login procedure!
It seems that XP Pro has no trouble communicating with this display, provided I can get Windows to load. I contacted Apple Support but they say it's a problem with Windows, so I submitted a support request to Microsoft. I'm waiting for them to tell me it's a problem with Boot Camp or the firmware.
I've seen descriptions of very similar problems on other forums (123macmin.com) and here, but no solutions anywhere. Anybody know what's happening here?

Update: Microsoft says it's probably a problem with the hardware:
    ==========================================
Mark, I would like to explain that the issue should be related to the display card driver. We still need to contact the Apple support to verify if their machine has been tested under the XP environment when DVI or AVG is in use. This issue is related to Hardware and cannot be resolved from a Windows XP standpoint. Our Windows XP Support Team deals mainly with issues related to the Windows XP Operating System. Thus, we are not the best resource for this issue.
Please understand the problem may be beyond our support boundary and, therefore, our help to troubleshoot this issue is limited. Let’s contact the manufacturer who will be more familiar with their products. To contact them, please access the following link:

Meanwhile I sent Redmond the System Information in an NFO file. More as this develops!

  • Mac Mini boots to grey screen w/ symbols

This morning my Mac Mini will not boot to Mac OS - it displays a light grey screen with a thunderbolt and some weird symbol that looks like a wheel/hub with 3 arms - 1 arm is solid and the other 2 are made up of lines perpendicular to the hub.
The Mac Mini was recently upgraded to Mountain Lion - running lastest updates - this was a few days ago. The display to VGA through the mini display port. Using magic mouse and usb keyboard, that's about it.
Any idea what has happened? Or what isn't happening?
    Thanks for your help!

OK - It looks like I'm stuck in target Disk Mode .... I suspect my kid had something to do with this or a stuck key.
Can someone recommend the best wat to get back to normal boot?

  • Mac Mini Boots to Unix command line

I've used my Mac Mini for almost two years with no problem. Normally I can figure out what I've done wrong...but not this time. I need some help from the OS X community.
This morning when I toggled to my Mac Mini from Windows (via a KVM switch - not dual booting) I had my OS X login screen with my username and one other username (Guest, I think). It wouldn't accept my password for my account, and I've never had a "Guest" (or whatever the other name was). In addition three other user accounts were missing (my wife, daughter, and one other). All I knew to do was restart (by turning off the Mac and turning it back on because it wouldn't accept my password).
When it booted up I had a black screen with the following two lines:
    -sh: /etc/profile: is a directory
    -sh-2.05b#
The only unusual thing I can think of is that last night I downloaded and installed a 'free' version of DivX (from their web site). I've never had a problem like this before.
Suggestions? I'm already having withdrawal symptoms from my Mac. Thanks in advance...
    Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.42GHz/1GB/80G HD/SD/Bluetooth +AP/56K MDM

Then, I suspect that the profile file is corrupt. Boot with the install disk, select your language, and, when the menu bar pops up, select Utilities->Terminal. When the Terminal window pops up, type in the following command, and hit the return key:
    cat /Volumes/"name of HD"/etc/profile
The result should look like this:
    # System-wide .profile for sh(1)
    PATH="/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin"
    export PATH
    if [ "${BASH-no}" != "no" ]; then
    [ -r /etc/bashrc ] && . /etc/bashrc
    fi
If it isn't, then my only suggestion is to reinstall the OS, using the Archive & Install option, saving user and network settings.

  • Mac Mini boot issues

I've got a Mac Mini (1.83 Core 2 Duo) running 10.6.8. Stock hard drive. Upgraded the RAM a couple of years ago, and haven't had any issues with it, until recently. It is always plugged into a UPS.
This past weekend, we decided to rearrange some of the rooms in our house, and the the Mac Mini was unplugged for about 8 hours. Went to hook it back up in its new location and it wouldn't turn on. So, tried the SMC reset a few times, and wouldn't turn on. Tried PMU reset, and it powers up, fans blazing. Aside from the jet engine level noise, it runs perfectly.
Seeing this, I tried the SMC reset again to fix the fans, and it no longer powers up. No beeps, no fan, nothing. Redoing the PMU reset makes the unit bootable again.
Why does it not power up with the SMC reset, but does with the PMU reset? And how do I fix this? The fan noise is really loud.
    Thanks.

You could try running diagnostics to see if there's a hardware failure.
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer.  After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears.  Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours.  If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error
Others that have posted with a similar problem usually found a hardware failure caused the problem - power brick, faulty power connector or cord, for example. So a visit to the Apple store may be appropriate it.
