Mac mini cant output 1080p

I have new mac mini hooke up to my 26"  1080p vizio via an hdmi cable.  It automaticaly set my video settings to 1080i and when I set it to 1080p it makes the picture really bright.  I've attempted using the display calibration tool in system prefrences but I can't seem to fix it.  Any help is much appreciated.

Sometimes you have to upair them (forget this device on iOS devices) to pair with another device.
Do any BT devices work on your Mini?

  • Mac Mini HDMI Output Problem w/ LG L246WP

NOTE: This appears to be unrelated to the "screen flickering" that has been noted previously.
I'm using a fresh new Mac Mini 2012 with an LG L246WP LCD monitor. The monitor has HDMI, VGA and Component video inputs.
When I attach the monitor to the Mini DisplayPort output, using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI cable, the display functions properly at all resolutions - including the native 1920 x 1200 resolution that I use it at normally. All resolutions are clearly displayed in the "Displays" System Preferences pane. The display looks perfect, functions properly.
When I attach the monitor to the HDMI port using an HDMI cable, the display does not fucntion properly. The display is shifted about 80-100 pixels to the left and about 20 pixels up, creating black bars on the bottom and right sides. Because of this, a large portion of the display is not visible including the menu bar and most of the left side. Additionally, the settings are reduced to "Best for Display" or "Scaled", with resolution options under "Scaled".
This is not acceptable. I had planned on simply using the Mini DisplayPort output as a workaround, since I already have the DVI adapter from an old setup, but I need to use Thunderbolt to access external hard drives for rapid data transfer. One of my Thunderbolt accessories does not have two ports, so I can't simply add the Mini DisplayPort adapter to a chain. The HDMI port needs to function properly with my monitor.
It's important to note that this monitor has functioned properly with many other comptuers running OS X, Windows and various Linux flavors and it hasn't ever done this before. I've tried several different HDMI cables, ruling that out as a problem. I've tried the HDMI to DVI adapter that ships with the Mac Mini 2012 along with two different DVI to HDMI adapters, ruling that out as a problem. I tried attaching several HDMI devices (game consoles, DVD players, etc) and they all function properly, ruling out an HDMI issue as a problem. The monitor functions properly when attached through the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, so it's not a problem with the monitor. I've reset the PRAM already and the installation of OS X 10.8.1 is stock with no modifications or migrated data. I've tried the suggestions on the HDMI FAQ (although there's no "underscan" option available in Displays)
I tried to call AppleCare and after describing the problem I got disconnected with no callback. I started another ticket, described the problem, discussed the previous disconnection, was assured that I'd be called back if disconnected, and haven't heard back in two hours. So I started to dig into the problem in earnest.
    This gets pretty technical.
After substantial research, it appears that this issue is related to the EDID that the monitor sends to the computer and, crucially, the way that the driver responds to it. For some reason, the HDMI port is recognizing the monitor as a CEA device instead of a monitor. As a result, it's restricting the monitor's available resolution to the native resolution  that the CEA 681 Series Extension describes ("Best for Display") and all other resolutions (including 1920 x 1200) are only available as "scaled". For some reason that I can't discern, all resolutions (even the 1080i and 1080p options) have similar deformities.
I've attempted to fix this by placing an appropriate override file in /System/Library/Displays/Overrides with an edied EDID removing the CEA-enable flag from byte 127 but, even after a reboot, the OS still insists that it's a CEA device and it won't allow me to force it to recognize the monitor as a 1920 x 1200 LCD Monitor.
How did I come to this conclusion and develop the fix? A nearly identical problem description showed up on the following website, with details on how this user fixed the issue:
    http://byuu.org/articles/computing/edid
They used a convoluted process that involved dismantling the monitor and flashing the EDID on the monitor itself. It fixed their problem. I'd prefer not to go through that process just because one computer has a problem with it. Frankly, I'd prefer if the new Mac Mini performed properly in the first place.
TL;DR: The Mac Mini 2012 doesn't work right with the LG L246WP through the HDMI output. Everything else works fine with it. This is very uncool. It's most likely to be an issue with the driver for the Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU that are bundled with OS X 10.8.1. The Mac Mini 2012 won't update to 10.8.2 (yet), so I can't test it.
Anyone have any other ideas? Anyone else using a Mac Mini 2012 (or 2011) with an LG L246WP monitor? Anything simple I've missed?

Problem Resolved. But it was complicated. And a huge pain in the rear.
TL;DR: I flashed the EDID as described here. This is not recommended for the weary. Ideally, Apple should release an update OS X that will include the updated Intel HD Graphics 4000 drivers that utilize the CEA flag properly.
Here's the detailed version. As mentioned above, this isn't recommended for the weary. An improper (or interrupted) EDID flash can have seriously unpredictable effects on a monitor's performance.
Step 1: Get a Windows PC set up with a floppy drive and find a floppy disk. Use this system to format the floppy as a MS-DOS Boot Disk and copy over the "ddcw" program described at the aformentioned link.
This took awhile, but I was able to cobble together a temporary frankensystem with parts I had laying around. In installed XP and formatted the disk with XP's format tool.
Step 2: Grab EDID data from the monitor, modify it to disable CEA mode at bit 127 and make sure bit 128, the checksum, is appropriate.
This also took awhile. Several graphics cards I tried could not read or write EDID data. I ended up swapping AGP cards in my frankenstein box until I found one that worked - a generic GeForce4 4200.
Once the EDID data was written to the floppy, I edited the text file containing the EDID data to change the last two hex octets from "01 33" to "00 34" (00, to disable bit 127, and 34 is 33 + 1, which satisfies the checksum) and formatted the text file to match the sample included in the EDID_Write.zip file. Your mileage may vary - make sure the checks.
Step 3: Write EDID data to the monitor.
The link above mentioned three options: Easy (monitor's EDID is unprotected - write away!), Hard (monitor's EDID is protected - use service mode to attempt a fix), and Very Hard (monitor's EDID is protected, hardware modification is required).
Luckily my LG246WP simply needed to be put into service mode as described at the link above (menu + power) and once started up in service mode, I simply enabled "Aging Mode" (whatever that means) and attempted a DDCW write of the updated data.
    Step 4: Profit!
After doing this, I powered off the monitor and powered it back on with the Mac Mini attached. The display functions PERFECTLY with HDMI out, just as it does using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.

    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • New 2012 Mac mini with HD 1080p support ?

has the new Mac mini full HD support on his HDMI port including 1080p and DTS HD ?

How is it look like after your display calibration? check with http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/contrast.php
Could u see the difference of all levels? If it is not able to tell the difference, the colors has not been fixed yet.

I think I have almost exact same problem with the exact same Mac Mini model on the same (single) monitor via HDMI output (my monitor is Samsung S24B300HL, not sure if the HL makes any difference).
Running Display Calibraton fixed the colours for me, but the text looks fuzzy not matter what I do. I have tried:
Turning LCD Font Smoothing on and Off (different but not better)
Changing the AppleSmoothFont variable via Terminal (different but only slightly better)
Changing monitor setting from PC to TV (made things worse, lots of overscan)
Adjusting settings on the monitor itself (sharpness at around 60 looks best but still not good).
Interestingly, connecting via Thunderbolt to HDMI instead (cable purchased especially to try and work around this issue) did not actually improve things for me, although it is good for you - I wonder if the fact that I used HDMI first has caused the mini to "lock" in certain settings to use with this monitor? I will give it another go later, see if I can make it "forget" and get the same result as you.
Same monitor with my 5 year old Windows PC - looks great, pin sharp. Based on internet searches so far, lots of people seem to be reporting issues with HDMI on Mac Mini.
Overall, a poor experience thus far with my first Mac :-(

  • Mac mini audio output problems

This is similar to a problem that appeared before, but with a different twist.
On 4 July all was well. On 5 July I switched on and there was no "chord" from the Mac. When I collected my mail - no sound from my speakers (which are part of my screen). Logged on to a couple of sites - no sound.
The System Profiler, under the "Audio (Built In)" category, says: "No Built-in Audio." I know that's wrong because it's always worked before and when I plug my headset in it works fine.
When I go to the Sound preferences panel in System Preferences, it finds the headset but if I unplug that it finds nothing.
I tried running the hardware test (by putting in the OS X install disc and holding D during startup.) It couldn't find a problem.
So, as far as I can see, audio output is fine for the USB headset output but not for the others. Is there a simple fix? The nearest Apple store is about 200 miles away and I don't fancy the idea of posting the Mac off.
(And I think it's still under warranty for a couple more weeks.)
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

hello mini users with the "no audio output" problem
it seems that there are faulty output jacks in the macbook and the mac mini
there are two things you can try:
i tried everything and began thinking about what new software i had installed. it was "macam" which enables you to use older webcams on OSX. i needed that to use my webcam on skype.
macam installs a file called "macam.component"
if you have the same, do this - take that file out of:
    (your hard drive)/library/quicktime - macam.component
and just put it on your desktop
restart, then in your sound pref's choose your audio output (if doesn't work restart again)
the first time i took it out, i had my sound back instantly, another time i had to choose audio output in sound prefs. you kind of have to try different things. after you get your sound back, you can put back "macam.component" to use your webcam.
it seems macam causes the problem, the two can not work at the same time.
the second thing: if you dont have "maccam" try plugging and unplugging output jack a few times and restarting until you have sound.
the problem still could be with the OSX 10.4.10 update / quicktime...or maybe even a hardware problem like others with macbooks were saying (with the red light), not sure.
people with macbooks and who have the red light on, say to use a paperclip to turn off the switch inside.
my mini does not have a red light on. i tried using a paperclip but it doesnt work.
hope this helps, beleive me i feel your pain!!!!
what good is a computer without sound?

  • Mac Mini HTPC Output options?

I have the new Mac Mini for use as the primary HTPC. The configuration is a bit specific and Im trying to decide on output options. I have a main-viewing LCD, between two additional smaller LCD's in portrait (so three total monitors). I would like to be able to view content on the main LCD in the highest possible resolution using the HDMI, but additionally I would like to extend content onto the side LCD's. I've considered the Atlona USB to HDMI converters for both sides, but is there any way to extend higher resolution to the side monitors using the mini display port? Id prefer the content on the side monitors not be mirrored... that is the kicker. So straight splitter is out.

Well, you could drive two of the displays with the two built-in display connections and possibly the third with a USB video display adapter. But realize that the performance of the USB device may not be as strong as the built-in video.

  • New Mac-Mini on a 1080p projector

Would the new mac mini (with leopard) work well with a 1080p projector (Marantz 15s1) using dvi to vga connection? I tried connecting my Macbook Pro to the projector and the picture looks soft even when I selected 1080p resolution on the macbook pro. The projector confirmed that it's displaying 1080p but the picture is still not as sharp as using a windows based pc.

The EMI filters are based on tiny surface mount parts, so I would say trying to bypass them would be very difficult without a schematic and layout diagram and a lot of skill.
Can you at least temporarily connect the MBP to an HDMI port on the projector just to confirm that the fuzziness goes away? That would at least confirm my hunch that the problem is related to filtering of the analog video. If the fuzziness is still present under HDMI, then there is some other issue to be addressed.

  • Mac Mini and LG 1080p TV

    Hello all.
I have a 2011 mac mini. When connected to my LG HD TV via HDMI, with both the mini and the TV set to 1080p, the picture looks great but the icons and text are very small. From my couch it is very difficult to work with.
Is there any way to increase icon and text size without altering the resolution from 1080p, or am I going to have to work with 720p instead.
    Many thanks.

  • Mac mini and h264 1080p stutter

Hi, I tried to search on Internet but i didn't find a solution.
If I try mov h264 1080p files (the one on the quick time site for example) the stutter terrible. The same but even worse with AVCHD files.
It's this a limit of the mac mini or there something i miss to proper view this kind of files?
I tried VLC player but it's almost the same.
    Thank's

Hi- Are you using one of the new Mac minis with 2.26 ghz processors? Do you have a lot going on at the same time you are trying to watch one of those videos?
If you are trying to watch one of the 1080p quicktime trailers off the net, it could be because your internet connection is slow, and not the speed of the Mini itself.
Try to download the trailers to your Mac mini first, and then try playing.
If you are getting stuttering video in 1080p with stuff that is already on your Mac mini, some users report having success by using a program called Plex to watch that HD content. It is a free download, so give it a shot.
For what it is worth, I routinely watch 1080p content on my low-end spec Mac mini with 4gb of ram, but even with 2gb, everything was smooth as silk on a 46' HDTV using VLC and Plex.

  • Mac mini audio output

Hi, i've seen this interesting program http://www.algoriddim.net/index.html

I remember that my last pc was able, using a tune program, to convert an audio input to an audio output to get 5.1 system.
I wonder to know if it is possible to convert the input to output with some kinda program, or is there any way to get working the pre-cue with a mini.

  • Mac mini sound output

new 2014 mac mini -> two monitors setup -> upon "awake", sound output from monitor choice disappear.  Only to restart to have those output appeared again.  any solution?

It depends on the sound input socket on the LCD. On the mini end, it's a standard stereo mini jack. If the LCD has the same, small, circular socket marked audio in, then a standard stereo mini jack to stereo mini jack cable will be what you need. On the other hand, if the LCD has two sockets marked audio in, one red and one white, then you need a stereo mini jack to twin RCA/phono cable.

  • Override mac mini headphone output

    Hey,
I was wondering if it is possible to override the audio headphone output, so the internal speaker will play instead ? or, if the headphones are pluggin for the internal speaker to play as well.
    Thanks for your time !
    Paul

My thoughts as well. The only work around I could see was to have extra hardware for the sound output via USB.
    _The back story_
The reason I ask, as I suddenly had a strange circumstances, where I had to get a message to my girlfriend - at home, who's phone battery had gone flat. I was at work, so jumping into my shared screen mac mini, thinking I could play some music as a attention grabber, while displaying textedit message of "PHONE ME". But realizing that the mac mini was plugged into a TV on standby. I had to resort to restarting the mac mini constantly, to get a chime out. Obviously my girlfriend just thought that something was wrong with the mac, and ignored it. That is why I needed it. A one in a million occurrence.
Since it has / must be a software issue, someone at apple must know the solution. Still this is on the list of "would be nice" .. but no where close to being on the "must have" list.
    Best,
    Paul

  • Mac Mini No Output Device?

I can not get my sound to work on my Mac Mini!  In 'System Preferences' it shows 'No Output Device Found'?  There are no options listed for me to select an output device.
If you have any ideas that might fix this problem I would really appreciate your help!

do you have any audio apps working?
open one up (quicktime player, dvd player, facetime, skype etc)  and look in its preferences to see if it offers you a choice.
do you have a pair of headphones (to see if that provokes a physical connection)?
is this a new problem? if so, whats different?
do you have a cam connected?
in system preferences, does it detect input, as in a microphone?

  • Mac Mini Digital Output

I have a 1.83 Mac Mini, bought the adapter for a Toslink cable and connected it to a system, and discovered that when I went to the sound control panel, I could not see anything but the built in I/O, the internal speaker works, but there is no selection for digital I/O.
This seems to imply one of a couple things, either something is not properly connected internally, which may have happened months ago when RAM was added and at the time, I had no interest in trying to get digital output from the Mini, course now I do.
The other thing I suspect is some sort of hardware failure, but would think that the internal speakers would not work if the digital output was completely dead??
Anyone know whether something could be inadvertently disconnected to prevent the digital output from even being a selection, or does it mean that something has failed requiring some replacement parts/repair?
    Any feedback would be appreciated..
    Thanks Norm

I would suspect the adapter if it had not worked in my Airport Express.
Are you saying that options to select Digital I/O will not appear in the sound control panel until the adapter is installed and cable connected to an input of a stereo?
I would have to find a means of looking closely to see if I can see any light coming from the jack, if I had to guess, there isn't, because I think that I should be able to select the digital I/O in the sound control panel if there were not some other issue.
So what I think I want to verify is what the Profiler says about audio and confirm that digital I/O is selectable at all times. I am hoping to prevent a repair of some sort, but maybe inevitable if I want it to work.

  • Mac Mini HDMI output gives bad resolution on external 1920x1200 external monitor

A brand new Mac Mini gives blurry picture with HDMI  HDMI connection to an external 1920x1200 HDMI monitor.
    very bad start

    Hi tlaci60.
I'm experiencing the very same issue you had with your monitor. Mine is a different brand (Westinghouse24" L2410NM), but the issue is the same. Not surprisingly, the resolution of this monitor is exactly the same as yours:1920x1200. Interesting…
Basically,I connect my brand new Mac Mini to my 24" monitor, and it results in a fuzzy and grainy image, with washed-out colors, and text so blurry it's difficult
to read. I'm sure you are familiar with what I describe.
Anyway: I’m kind of desperate, because nothing seems to work .I have tried your suggestion, but it doesn't work for me. I tried other suggestions from other threads and forums... and nothing works either. I just get the same awful look, even though the Mac recognizes the monitor and applies the correct resolution(1920x1200). Nevertheless, it looks just horrible.
Any suggestions?  Any ideas?  I'm just losing my mind with this, and I already bought every adapter and cable combination I could think of.
    Thank you
