Mac mini CD-Burner almost kills itself

my CD burner in my mini almost kills itself, literally.
when burning ANY CD over 4X, half way through it will speed up WAY beyond what the drive can even support, and vibrate so LOUD, and cause the whole Mac to freeze, and force me to hold down the power button...
However, my external DVD burner has no trouble burning those same CDs at 48X...
Is there a firmware update for the CD-burner in my Mac mini or something that can fix this?
Combo Drive..

I have the exact same problem. When burning any CD over 4x, the optical drive in my Mac mini will get extremely loud and vibrate and a short time later the Mac will slow to a crawl and lock up. I am really concerned that it's damaging the internals because the noise is so loud.
The only way to stop the noise and unfreeze the system is to manually turn it off-- I can't even login remotely.
I also have a Combo drive.
I called AppleCare about the issue, and how it's definately a hardware issue, but twice they refused to help me... I live too far away (at least 80 miles) from a AASP or an Apple store. I kinda expected to get an RMA like Dell and other menufacturers commonly do udner warranty. It kinda ***** that my warranty is practically worthless.
I can't even find a exact replacement optical drive... the only one I could find was a dual-layer DVD burner from Other World Computing for $119. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/superdrive/
Let me know if you find anything else that helps... I'd be glad to know.

  • New mac mini - cannot burn dvd

I have recently purchased a mac mini. I already had an external dvd burner, but I can't burn dvd projects from iMovie since no idvd is on the mac. HELP!

Tbirdvet, thanks for the suggestion. That is what I planned to do today unless someone can suggest another idea. I can always use a usb extended Mac keyboard anyway. And a mouse is certainly cheap enough.

  • Mac mini keeps freezing and restarting itself

I just bought this Mac Mini a couple weeks ago.  It's the dual core 2.5 processor with 4 gb of ram and 500gb hard drive I believe.  it's been working great up until today. It has frozen and restarted itself (popping up the grey screen upon restarting saying that there was a problem) about 20 times at least today.  I have noticed it has mostly been while I was on Safari.
Also, this computer came with mountain lion originally and I had a free upgrade for Mavericks and updated it to mavericks I think yesterday.
I am completely new to mac. I have an iPhone and iPad but I've never owned a Mac computer before and I've heard it's so much better than windows but now it's making me rethink my decision lol.
So anyone have any ideas?  I'm used to windows shutting down on me and I know how to fix it but I have no idea what could be wrong. Its obviously something software related. Could it be Safari, mavericks or something of the sort? Has anyone else had similar issues?
Any help would be appreciated! thanks!

Well.. I just started this thing up after letting it stay off last night and today. Upon log on it shut down and restarted itself before I even got to the main screen.

  • Can I save a movie on my iMac G5 put it on my Mac mini and burn it?

ok, so I have iDVD 09 on my iMac G5 running leopard and I made a movie, but the problem is I cant burn it on a DVD due to it only having a combo drive. But I have a Mac mini late 2014 with a SuperDrive and I was wondering if I could transfer the file and burn it on my Mac mini

Click here, follow the instructions, and transfer the image. The Mac mini doesn't need to have iDVD installed to do this.

  • Mac mini Server is almost perfect

I'd like to see it support more memory, but more importantly, I think it really needs an eSATA connection. I would rather have the Server version keep the DVD player and add the eSATA connection. A second 500GB drive doesn't really do a whole lot when you have tons of photos, videos, and music.

I just posted a complaint about the lack of eSATA earlier. I agree, eSATA should be included. A file server needs to have speedy access to data. The internal 5400 RPM drives are limited due to number of platters and rotational dely, FW800 is limited by the bus and can only achieve mid 60's MB/sec. I had a 4TB RAID5 array attached to my mini, but ended up moving it to a PC with eSATA due to performance. And no, we should not have to hack up the computer and hang a SATA connector out of the case to get external SATA connectivity.

  • Mac Mini won't boot up (CPU Halted)

Hi all, I have a Mac Mini with Leopard that has started refusing to boot up. I generally leave it switched on all the time but a couple of days ago the fan (I think) was getting pretty noisy so I shut it down. When I attempted to reboot the next morning it gave me the familiar chime, a silver screen, it then went through its normal scrolling white text on a black background before giving me a "CPU Halted" message and closing itself down. Anyone have any ideas? Does that sound like a fan or an internal battery issue? I wouldn't be too worried as I have a new iMac but there is one piece of software (cocoa booklet) on the Mac Mini I need to allow me complete a monthly parish magazine for the local church and it doesn't work on Snow Leopard. I don't mind cracking the Mini open if more info is required and would really appreciate any help you guys could provide...
    Mac Mini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor 2Gb Ram, MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 (FM3J Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Mac Minis are generally almost silent if they have free access to room temperature air and if their air intake ducts are not clogged with dust or animal fur.
The fact that your fan was running noisy suggests that the Mini was working very hard to stay cool. And the fact that you ran the Mini 24/7 gave it ample opportunity to suck in dust or fur.
If the Mini looks dusty, I would gently vacuum the vents on the bottom edge of the Mini. Don't use "canned air", as that will only push the dust further into the Mini.
The Mini's CPU will shut down if the Mini can't keep cool enough.
On the other hand, it is possible that the fan itself is failing, and that was the cause of the noise and the inadequate cooling.

  • Mac Mini OSX 10.6.5 config w/ cable/modem-AEBS-mac mini server

I'm new to OSX server, and have recently had to change locations of a OSX 10.6.5 Mac Mini. I am setting it up now as a home server and need to access from outside the home. I have had a wonderfully operating AEBS for many years, but once I started trying to set-up the mac mini server, I started having problems configuring the server to play nicely with the AEBS.
Back to basics, because for what I need the AEBS is sufficient (and technically capable) of acting in concert with my mini server (from all I've read, anyway). I just cannot configure them correctly without causing problems.
    Equipment:
    AEBS w/ version 7.4.1
    Mac Mini OSX 10.6.5
    iMac OSX 10.6.5
    (2) MacBook Pros 10.6.5
    (2) iPhones IOS 4.2
I have a static (known) IP from my ISP. I have no problem with configuring the AEBS to work with everything, until I plug in the mac mini. I realize the older configuration for the prior server set-up is incorrect, but making minor adjustments for moving to a AEBS from the Cisco UC500 set-up has been greater than my technological experience.
I am versed in networking, but cannot seem to get the correct configuration, and the only thing the Apple manuals have is a 'possibility' this can be done, but no specifics I can find for controlling the AEBS settings from the mac mini when connected on the LAN port of the AEBS (that's when the problems start).
Here's where I've tried and cannot access the Serv Admin program when I connect the mac mini to the AEBS LAN port:
    (1) changed AEBS Connection sharing to Share a public ip address
(which I understand makes "advanced" "port mapping" possible)
    (2) set AEBS Internet connection to connect to router on 192.168 network
    (3) set AEBS to offer DHCP in 10.0.1 range
    (4) set AEBS capsule own address to be 10.0.1.1
PLUG in ethernet cable to Mac Mini and Time Capsule
    Activate Ethernet and deactivate Airport
    (5) set Mac Mini Server Manual ip address to 10.0.1.2
    (6) set Mac Mini Server DNS addresses to 127.0.0.1, 10.0.1.1
    (7) set Mac Mini Server / Server Admin / DNS / Zones / Machine name / IP Address = 10.0.1.2
Any advice on where to start trouble-shooting?

The AEBS gets your public static IP address, and otherwise performs NAT.
(The AEBS is a good home box, but not a server-grade firewall. I do run AEBS and Time Capsule boxes, but these are generally operated as WiFi Access Points (what Apple calls "bridging"), and not as WiFi routers, and definitely not as server gateways.)
The AEBS DHCP server configuration for DNS services is set with the IP address of your new server; that's your DNS server now. Caution: +There are no references to ISP DNS nor other DNS servers.+ You're running DNS (well, you will be soon), so your local network will be configured differently than a client network.
Your Mac Mini Server is configured in a /24 subnet in one of the private blocks (eg: 10.0.0.0/8) somewhere. This for future VPNs, as everything on the planet is crammed in a few 192.168.0.0/16 subnets.
The AEBS DHCP server can be used to pass out a pool of addresses in that private /24, but the server must have a static IP address.
[Get your DNS services going for your LAN now.|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] Don't skip this step. DNS is essential to servers, and you'll be serving DNS on your LAN. I'd suggest a real and registered domain here or a subdomain of a real and registered domain, as changing domain names on a network is an increasing pain in the rump as the network scales up.
For DNS services, your Mac Mini (and only your Mac Mini) will refer only to itself via the 127.0.01 on its network controller. (This is an odd case; the box is referring to itself, so it's the IP loopback address and not your LAN static IP address.) Everything else on your LAN will refer to the static IP address of your Mac Mini DNS server either via static configuration, or via the AEBS DHCP server's DNS setting referencing your Mac Mini server that are received from the DHCP server with a dynamic address.
Work your way up to configuring Open Directory (LDAP), and Kerberos, then configure the rest of the accouterments.

  • Mac Mini keeps trying to restart

My Mac Mini keeps trying to shut itself down. It does not shut down all the way - but if I leave it to sit for a while I come back to notices asking whether I want to close windows and shut down safari, and if I dont' have any programs that prompt a notification before shutting down I will come back to find that the computer has restarted.
I have checked my power settings and they are totally normal.
    Any other ideas?
I have the same problem on my MacBook Pro, and the Mini is a copy of the MacBook setup so I wonder if it is software rather than hardware (ie a power supply issue).
    Thanks!

your profile suggests you're on Mac OS X 10.6.
if that's the case, you could try if upgrading to 10.6.3 using the _*Mac OS X v10.6.3 combo update*_ fixes your issues.
    other things to try:
_*resetting the System Management Controller SMC*_
_*resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM*_
booting into _*safe mode*_, then rebooting normally.

  • Mac mini auto start pblm

My Mac mini system is not starting itself in every power cycle.
We are using this system for product demo and the sytem kept inside the fixture.
So everyday morning we had to open the fixture just press the POWER button of the system . If you can help me to make the system as auto start on powerup. Kindly help

go to energy saver in the system preferences, go to schedule, set the mini to start up every day when you need it to.
you can also schedule the computer to shut down or sleep in the same place.

  • Burning metal/plastic smell from Mac Mini

I just purchased a late 2012 Mac Mini (running Lion 10.8.2, 2.5GHz i5, 4 GB Ram).  I noticed the Mac Mini has a burning smell...not sure how to describe it, but almost like a burning plastic or burning metal smell.  Anyway, it only occurs when running demanding applications such as hardware demanding games or YouTube videos.
Just for details: There are no obstructions to the airflow.  In fact, I set the Mac Mini on a roll of masking tape to lift it off the desk slightly (thought this might help with airflow).  The computer does run hot when the smell is occuring.
Anyone else have this issue?  I'm debating if I should return the Mac Mini or if this is normal (and will eventually go away) when using hardware demanding apps/games/videos.
    Thanks!

It is possible that at the high heat you are running the processors the solder flux left on the board could be burning off. Although this is probably not harmful it gives the impression something is burning that shouldn't be. Since you cannot know what's happening inside it's always safer to have it looked at.

  • Problem Burning DVD-R with mac mini

Since I have my Mac mini (1.5 years) I haven't been able to burn a DVD-R once! Now I am almost out of space (7GB left) and need to backup. I am using Toast 6. It burns CDs fine. And it starts burning DVDs, but after 5 minutes it says "buffer underrun". Now I tried different settings, different DVD-R discs, burning it slow, and closing all applications. Nothing helps. I also tried getting rid of Toast 6 and just putting the DVD in, but then the computer doesn't recognize.
what else can I try? Wasting DVDs is becoming an expensive hobby
    please help.

I also tried getting rid of Toast 6 and just putting the DVD in, but then the computer doesn't recognize.
What, exactly, does happen when you put a blank DVD in your SuperDrive? What option do you have selected in the CDs & DVDs System Preference to happen when you do put a blank DVD in? Perhaps you should set it to "Open Finder" so you can try to burn a DVD with the Finder. It may be set to "Ignore" or even to open Toast - which, of course, it can't do if you've removed Toast.

P.S. Exactly which version of Mac OS X are you using? Your profile here says "Mac OS X 10.2.x" but all the Mac minis shipped with at least Mac OS X 10.3.x. You can find out if you select "About This Mac" under the blue Apple menu.

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?

Remote Disc Can't recognize Blank disc, but it does recognize other discs. I am trying to burn something from my itunes on my mac mini to a blank disc on my windows computer. What could be wrong?
I can see other discs such as music and stuff so I know I have installed it correctly but how come I can't see the blank disc that I need to burn?

You can't burn discs remotely, you can only read data discs remotely (i.e. you cannot play movie DVDs either).
Either copy the files to the remote computer or get an external drive.

  • II can't burn any CD or DVD in my Mac Mini

Hello, I've had my mac mini (super drive) for a week when I tried to burn a data cd I got the error message "Sense Key=Medium error
    Sense code=0x0C
    Write Error".
After that:"The Drive Reported an Error
    Sense Key=illegal Request
    Sense Code =0X30,0X05
    Cannot write medium,incopatible format
After that i tried to burn a cd in Finder but i had this message:
Disk Unit is not supported.error code"0X80020025
After rebooting i write the cd,but at the second copy i have the same problem
Any ideas of what the problem could be? I suspect the drive has gone bad but I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it. I have tried different types of recordable cd's with the same result. Any help would be appreciated. Desperate!!!
MAC MINI SUPERDRIVE Mac OS X (10.4)

I would take it in to a local mac reseller to test it out with different media. There are different types of blank media to write on with different speeds and specs. You could try buying different brands, but probably cheaper to bring it in. If it's a hardware problem, then they can replace it right there. Good luck.

  • Unable to boot on Mac Mini from DVD burned from .iso image

I'm following the Beginner's Guide to try and install Arch on a Mac Mini "Late 2009".
I have downloaded archlinux-2014.10.01-dual.iso and associated .sig, and have verified it using the gpg2 command described in the guide (including the link to http://sparewotw.wordpress.com/2012/10/ … -sig-file/ which gave some assurance that the ambiguous answer produced by gpg2 was in fact legitimate).
I then used OSX's Disk Utility to burn the .iso file to a blank DVD. After verifying the burn, it ejected the disk.
When I re-inserted it, I received a message that the disk was unmountable, giving me the option to Ignore or Eject. I chose Ignore. Then I went to the System Preferences > Startup Disk, to see if it would at least appear there as an option, but it didn't.
(I should mention that I also burned the same file to another disk using a Windows machine, and when I inserted it into the Mac I got the same message, so I don't think it's corrupted media. (Bad reader, perhaps? eek.) )
That's where I stand. There are so many variables at play here (many of them Apple-induced, I think) that I've been unable to find a solution that fits my situation. Could someone please provide suggestions / pointers / answer?
    Thanks,
    Chap

Exactly right. Holding the Option key caused a display of various bootable OSes, including the one I had just burned from the Mac using hdiutil (weirdly entitled "windows"). I selected it, and it booted. I now have a console. Problem solved. Thanks.
UPDATE: note that this boot disk *cannot* be seen or selected via the OSX System Preference > Startup Disk panel. Holding the Option key during startup seems to be the only way to select it.
