Mac mini digital audio

Can anyone help with digital audio on Mac mini late 2012 model?
I have a Denon AVR-2808 and tried numerous ways to get Dolby digital with no success. Tried both HDMI and the optical via audio out with a belkin adapter.
Paying iTunes movies the most I get is DTS Neo or multi-channel in. Amp plays DD from both my Blu Ray and Cable TV without any problems.
Have searched the net and tried a few other fixes with no success. Any help here would be appreciated
Brad

Does he have the 1.42ghz G4 Mini? If so, that model is not a digital/optical audio out jack, at least not the 1.42ghz model I have. Did not check to see if a later update prior to the intel switch added the port to that model. My 1.66Ghz intel mini has the digital/optical audio out. Tell your firend to check the manual that came with his mini, it will tell you if it is a digital/optical out port or not.

  • HT4806 Mac mini digital audio out through the headphone jack

I'm misled by this sentence for audio out port from the support page: "For digital audio, you can use Apple iPhone headset with microphone".
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5539
It is there for all mac minis starting from 2010 model.
Does it mean electrical digital signal? Any chance to get S/PDIF coaxial signal?

If an optical signal is OK,  you just need one of these:
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00016W6Y6
To convert the optical signal to a co-ax one will need a more complex/expensive convertor.

  • How to get the Mac Mini Digital Audio output at 192kHz?

I have a mid 2011 Mac Mini (and love it). According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4806, "The headphone / line output port accommodates digital optical audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS)."
So there is digital audio output to 192 kHz but how do you configure it to work? Using the Audio Midi Setup Utility, I can set the sample rate to 96000 Hz -- but it won't go higher to 192kHz. Anyone know how to do this?

That is in some ways confusing.  For the analog output, the
internal DAC can support 24 bit/192Khz audio data.  It does
require an application that has the capability of playing back
    such material.
The TOSLINK optical standard does not support this data rate.
It has nothing to do with the Mini, it is the standard itself.  The
TOSLINK optical spec is 96 kHz, 24 bit stereo (uncompressed).
The mini will however support multichannel, 24 bit, 192 kHz
(uncompressed) via the HDMI interface.  Also, again,
the playback software needs to support it.
Just as a final note, unless the source material has the
higher sample rate format, there is no benifit to outputing
at the higher sample rate, especially if the source some
lossy comporessed format (mp3, aac, Dollby and DTS
    non-HD formats).

  • Mac Mini Digital Audio Output

    Hi,
My friend is trying to use the only audio output from the Mac Mini (1.42 GHz) as a digital out. He was under the impression that when you hook up the right cable (which has bought and we double checked-optical audio cable with Toslink adaptor.)
But when we go to pref. menu there is no selection for digital audio out except for the regular line out.
Any ideas or tricks to getting digital out on this Mini?
    Thanks,
    Babak

  • Mac mini optical audio failure

Hi, I ask for help regarding a problem that is affecting me about my Mac Mini 3,1 with Lion 10.7.1 connected to an amp with optical cable Sony HT minitoslink -> toslink.
Until a few days ago, everything has always worked perfectly. In these days, after turning on the mac mini, the audio comes easily to the amp, so I can see DVD movies and MKV in multichannel audio mode. After about 10 minutes, while the video continues, the sound stops. I try to restart the mac mini but the problem remains.
In addition, when i disconnect the optical cable from the amplifier side, the red light is not present. If I link a headphone to macmini or set-up to internal speaker analog audio works fine.
If I turn off the mac mini and power back up after fifteen minutes, the optical digital audio back, but it turns off after 10 minutes.
I tried to connect the cable to another macbook: it works regularly and the red light is turned on regularly for some time.
I did a clean install of Snow Leopard 10.6.7 on a USB drive and unfortunately there are the same audio issues.
In your opinion can be a problem with cable or there is a problem on macmini sound card?
I tried to reset the PRAM and SMC, permission repair, delete audio preferences, but nothing changes.
I also tried the Apple Hardware Test and the Apple Diagnostic Disk and the result is okay.
    Can you help me?
    Thank you for your attention

Hello, I solved the problem. I moved the Mac mini in a ventilated place, then I turned it on and I put the headphones into the "audio out". I restarted the computer three times, then I put the optical cable and everything works as before!
The CPU temperature was 72 ° C. I used the software smcFanControl and the temperature dropped to 52 ° C. I think the Mac Mini overheats so much. Now is okay, I have seen many movies in Dolby Digital and DTS.
I hope that you solve the problem.
    Goodbye!

  • Mac Mini A1176 Audio

    Hello Everyone,
I'm faily new to Mac world and I have a question about Mac Mini A1176 Audio to HDTV. I'm trying to make a HTPC and followed couple of guides online but I didn't get clear understanding of Digital Audio from Mac Mini to HDTV. I can configure the structure with stereo headphone to RCA but would like to know if there is a possibility to get digital audio. I have DVI to HDMI cable running from Mac Mini to HDTV but it doesn't give audio (as also stated by mac documentation). I would appreciate any response that could direct me to correct configuration of my HTPC with digital audio.
    Thanks,
    Pyraxic

Only the newer Mac Mini's with a true HDMI output connection supports digital audio down the display cable.
If your HDTV or Stereo Receiver supports Optical (Toslink) Audio input, then you could use a Toslink cable with a 3.5mm adapter on one end connected to the Mini's headphone jack. see > NewerTech CBLAOPTMT Toslink to Mini Toslink Optical... in stock at OWC
If not, then you are limited to the current 3.5mm to RCA cable connection that you are now using.

  • OS X 10.8.5 mac mini hdmi audio output issue

I am running a 2012 Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.5 and my Mac is set for audio and video output via HDMI to my AV receiver / TV. I have recently noticed that HDMI audio output ceases to function once the computer goes to sleep. A full computer restart is required to resolve the issue which is an inconvenience to say the least.
Or is anyone aware of a simple fix?
All my software is up to date, the HDMI lead and connection works fine for video and audio works fine after a restart so it must surely be a software error. Worked fine until the latest OS X update...
    Grateful for any help!

  • Mac Mini for audio recording using LOGIC X

Has anyone had experience using the latest Mac mini for audio recording? I'm thinking of purchasing the 2.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x8GB 1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm  model. I'll be using Logic X along with Reasons, Wave, UA plugins with a Apollo I/O  I'd appreciate any feedback and or suggestions.

I'd work off of another hard drive as much as possible.  Install the applications to your boot drive, but keep your data on a separate external hard drive.  If you try to run OS, apps and big audio data off of that 5400, I foresee performance issues even with 16GB of RAM.  Also, don't forget a second external hard drive for your backups.

After another 30, 40 minutes... the audio works now!

  • Mac Mini HTPC Audio Options?

I'm going to convert my Mini (early 2009) into a home theater PC. I need to know what audio options I have for getting 5.1 sound out of it.
I'm a little confused about the audio out jack. Is this jack a standard stereo headphone jack, or is it a digital audio jack?
What other options are there? I do see an external solution from Sound Blaster (Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi External USB – 5.1). I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this under Snow Leopard?

the TOSlink cable will fit the bill on those models, but I STRONGLY urge you to get a right angle plug on the TOSlink cable, if not, you will have about an 1 1/2-2" of cable sticking out the back of your Mac..it is a little heavy for the 3.5mm plug adapter to hold it in. The right angle plug can easily rest on the video cable and you don't have to worry about the cable sticking out the back.

  • Mac Mini Digital Output

I have a 1.83 Mac Mini, bought the adapter for a Toslink cable and connected it to a system, and discovered that when I went to the sound control panel, I could not see anything but the built in I/O, the internal speaker works, but there is no selection for digital I/O.
This seems to imply one of a couple things, either something is not properly connected internally, which may have happened months ago when RAM was added and at the time, I had no interest in trying to get digital output from the Mini, course now I do.
The other thing I suspect is some sort of hardware failure, but would think that the internal speakers would not work if the digital output was completely dead??
Anyone know whether something could be inadvertently disconnected to prevent the digital output from even being a selection, or does it mean that something has failed requiring some replacement parts/repair?
    Any feedback would be appreciated..
    Thanks Norm

I would suspect the adapter if it had not worked in my Airport Express.
Are you saying that options to select Digital I/O will not appear in the sound control panel until the adapter is installed and cable connected to an input of a stereo?
I would have to find a means of looking closely to see if I can see any light coming from the jack, if I had to guess, there isn't, because I think that I should be able to select the digital I/O in the sound control panel if there were not some other issue.
So what I think I want to verify is what the Profiler says about audio and confirm that digital I/O is selectable at all times. I am hoping to prevent a repair of some sort, but maybe inevitable if I want it to work.

  • Two macs w/ digital audio

I have a 27" iMac and a Mac Mini. I would like to add some external speakers to my setup. What's the best way to get both of these Macs to share one set of speakers?
If I run the digital output from the Mini into the digital input of the iMac and then run the iMac's digital out to a pair of speakers with optical inputs then would I be able to hear audio from both Macs?

FWIW I got a set of speakers with 2 separate audio inputs.

  • Mac Mini/HDTV Audio Problems

I have my Mac Mini connected to my Samsung HDTV. It worked fine and I had audio and video. Somehow, the audio stopped. I hired a professional to come and reconfigure my whole setup and he connected the Mac Mini to our home theater speaker system. It worked, fine. Now, it does not have audio. He and I have tried everything and there is no sound, but there is sound when the computer is not connected to any audio. You can hear the sound come from the computer, and you can hear sound when you connect earphones. The RCA connectors that hook to the microphone outlet will not work with the computer. What am I doing wrong? There is sound...it just will not let my TV or speakers hear it.

Given a pro could not fix it, it isn't easy to troubleshoot this sort of thing over a forum but, let's see if you can adapt from my experience with the Bravia. I am not a pro, hence tolerate my 'elementary' explanation.
    1. A DVI-HDMI cable is connected from the Mini to the HDMI input on the LCD with the little audio jack beside it. Only this HDMI input, that partner's the audio jack, is relevant.
    2. An audio cable is then connected from the Mini's mike jack to the audio jack beside the HDMI input. This arrangement settles audio on the LCD speakers.
    3. To output audio to the 5.1 Receiver (via the LCD), I chose a channel on the LCD, in my case 'TV' ('Sat' was also available). From the 'TV' channel, twin Red/White RCAs are connected to the corresponding 'TV' channel on the 5.1. This settles audio to the 5.1 as well.
    4. Turn on the LCD, select the relevant HDMI channel for the Mini and you have audio on the LCD speakers.
    5. Mute the LCD speakers. Turn on the 5.1, select the 'TV' channel (on the 5.1) and there you have it, audio on the 5.1.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers

  • If I connect HDMI between TV & Mac Mini will audio pump out the TV Speakers?

I connected my Mini with HDMI to my 46in Samsung the Mini recgonized it as 1080 and it looks great.  Though the audio was coming out the speaker in the Mini.  Shouldn't it come out the TV speakers?

Check this info on connecting a Mac Mini to a TV.

  • Mac mini distorts audio badly

I really am loving my new Mac mini, but as an audio nut I quickly became very disappointed. The audio is distorted! Playing the same sources on my older Macs sound fine, but the new mini distorts the sound badly. It sounds "crackly." I've tried a few different pairs of headphones and external speakers, all with the same results. The rest of my Macs sound flawless. I went to the Apple store and the genius there was unable to help me. To make things worse, it seems that all of the minis on display have the same problem. In the Apple store I selected the preview of "Blew Away" by the Smashing Pumpkins from the iTunes store using the "rock" eq setting. I listened using my Sony MDR-V700 headphones on both the minis and the iMacs in store... minis sound distorted, iMacs sound fine. Is anyone else having this issue or did this store get a bad batch of minis? Again, this happens with multiple sources, playing to different sets of headphones and speakers; only the mini distorts.

I listened to the xitel for a few minutes and determined that it sounds pretty similar to the iPod...but where as i could have listened to the iPod all night without feeling like i needed to EQ anything, i found myself wanting to use the EQ to try and open up the sound more.
Now listening thru the headphone output and to be honest it sounds ok...maybe not quite as open as the iPod, but certainly acceptable and i don't see anything here that would tell me there is an audio problem with the mini.
But lets go back to the your original post and add "rock" EQ to the mix....I will say before i turn it on that i found that EQ settings felt wonky to me on the mini yesterday...if i pushed anything to hard it would distort badly..
On to "rock"...with tigerlilly it just pumps up the base somewhat and makes the vocals louder...but it does not distort or sound unaceptable to me...
On the the iTunes store to test "blew away"...
does not sound great to me...but is that the recording or the mini? You say its the mini...I will try the same song tomorrow at work on my 24: imac and report back.
Cliffnotes...i heard nothing that says the mini has an audio problem...sorry.
