Mac mini don't sleep (10.6.1)

I hope that in the 10.6.2, the problem of sleeping will be fine: no matter what I tried, my mac mini don't want to sleep (it works only via the finder).
Note that one of my friend has a rebooting one time systematically after its go out of sleeping.

After the hefty Mac OSX 10.6.3 update from yesterday, my mini still suffers from insomnia.
Everything remains the same: screen will turn dark, but mini never self sleeps, power light remains bright (not pulsing) - vs - sleep via the Apple menu works.
The other issue that visibly remains for me is that the mini always shows airport as 100% or 3 bars / curves even though it is only at one, as it is correctly shown in the join networks window.
As far as contacting Apple, I hope everybody files a bug report via Apple Feedback (again):

  • 2010 Mac Mini won't sleep

Hello, everything was working fine until I accessed my mac mini from my old iMac G4 to share some files. Now my new Mac Mini won't sleep. Here is what I have done. Ejected the Mac Mini on the iMac. Turned off the iMac, stopped sharing everything on the Mac Mini including files, my printer and iTunes media and reset the PRAM. Still the Mac Mini won't sleep. It's set to it's defaults of 10 minutes to sleep the monitor and itself but only the monitor goes to sleep after the 10 minutes. Very frustrated...

Hello Euchre and thank you for replying. I have unchecked all the boxes within the "Sharing" options that I checked some time ago. When I did that, sharing was automatically turned off. Still I am having the issue. I'll try putting the monitor at 9 minutes and the computer at 10 to see if that works. I'll be back. Thanks again, Ed

  • When I turn on my TV/AV receiver my Mac mini goes to sleep!?

This issue occurs regardless of whether the Mac Mini is in sleep mode or awake...
I have my Mac Mini connected to my HDTV, therefore I connect using an iPad as a remote.
When I turn on the TV and receiver (Onkyo), the Mac Mini will go in to sleep mode, even after showing the desktop with no problem (moments later it will turn off). This makes it very hard to wake up using any iPad apps, because even using wake on LAN functions these seem to have little effect. On some occasions I can use wake on LAN and this works, however most of the time this is unsuccessful. If the Mac Mini is already in sleep mode, I will of course have the same problems.
My main issue is that this is only started happening since upgrading to mountain lion and there was no problem before using lion.
Is anyone experiencing these issues and/or have any suggestions?

Try restarting you computer by holding down the option key, this should give you the option to select your startup volume, select Macintosh HD.

  • MAC Mini late 2014 Sleep Wake issue

I just bought a MAC Mini late 2014 version with Yosemite pre-installed, and got a similar sleep wake problem.
It's connected to an ASUS IPS 27" screen using HDMI interface. When the Mac goes to sleep after 15 min, or when I press the button to force it to sleep.
If you type on the keyboard and the trackpad within 1 minute (before the screen also goes to sleep because of no HDMI signal), then the wake up will work.
If you wait till the screen goes to sleep also, then no matter how hard you pound on the keyboard or on the track pad, the MAC will not wake up.
The only way to wake it up is to power off the screen, then power it on again. Then type on the keyboard or move your track pad while doing that.
This is really annoying. I have to set to "Never" turn the display off to avoid this issue.
Called the Apple tech support who recommended I set up the energy saver like this below. But still could not fix the issue.
He told me to bring the Mac mini back to the shop to check.
I doubt it's a hardware issue. My theory is that this  could be a software bug that somehow
the setting of "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" is not in effect even if you turned it on in the power saver preference.
So, when the computer goes to sleep, there is no more HDMI signal, then the screen also goes to sleep.
And if "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" is not in effect, then even if you type on the keyboard, the computer will not wake up as the screen is asleep. The screen will not wake up as no HDMI signal comes from the computer.
This turns into a viscious cycle, or a deadlock. Nobody is waking up.
This is simple logic. I don't know why systems are designed to work like that. Just too annoying....
I hope apple can fix this software bug asap.
I did try to convert my HDMI cable to min-display port and try to plug that into the thunderbolt port to see if it helps.
The same issue appears. The only difference is, with the HDMI port, once I am able to wake up the computer by power cycling my screen, i will see that I am prompted with a login screen, even if I set up my computer to auto login.
but when I use the display port, when I managed to wake up the MAC, it bypasses the login screen.

Some updates on this. I tried two other 22" screen. Both of the seems to be working fine with sleep wake, but takes between 40 sec to one min to wake up after you typed something.
    Topcon hdmi 22"  screen
17 sec after keystrokes to turn wake screen
    40 sec to wake computer
    AOC  hdmi  22" screen
19 sec after keystrokes to turn wake screen
    38 sec to wake computer
I tried to switch to two other HDMI cables to see if it'll improve the situation of my original ASUS VX279 IPS HDMI screen.
But it didn't. Still never wakes up after it the MAC goes to sleep until you power cycle the screen.
I guess there is some hardware compatibility issue here.
Let me bring my mac mini to the shop to see if a replacement will help.

  • Mac Mini wont' Display Sleep after Yosemite Update

My Mac Mini is no longer going into Display Sleep. Instead I now see the Screen Saver.  I have checked System Preferences | Energy Saver and it is definitely set to Display Sleep after 10 minutes (The default). What is interesting is that if I try to change the Display Sleep time (e.g. to 1 hour), when I go back into Energy Saver, it is back to 10 minutes - this doesn't look right!  In fact none of the options (e.g. Wake on LAN) seem to stay changed.
This seemed to start after the update to Yosemite 10.10.1 a few days ago - but that might be coincidental. Until then Display Sleep had worked fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Nick

  • Mac mini keeps entering sleep mode

Hi. I have a Mac mini that has this annoying problem where it keeps
wanting to enter sleep mode. This problem seemed intermittent at first.
What I notice is that my mini would enter sleep mode whenever I try to
encode mp3. This seems reproducible. When it enters sleep mode,
I can wake it up by pressing the power button. However, it goes back
in sleep mode after a couple seconds after it wakes up. The only way
I can get it out of sleep mode is to quit iTunes and eject the audio
    CD.
    Things I've tried:
Energy Saver settings: Computer sleeps after 3 hours inactivity,
display sleeps after 3 hours inactivity, unchecked "Put hard disk(s)
to sleep when possible". I tried disabling energy save. No luck.
I also tried to uncheck "Allow Nap" box in the Processor settings.
However, it always checks this after a reboot.
If I insert a DVD movie, I can watch it w/o any interruption.
Anyone else seen this problem? Thanks in advance.
    Jim

Hi Carl. I was unable to find com.apple.AutoWake.plist in my
    system. Deleting com.apple.PowerManagement.plist didn't
    help.
I decided to try your open firmware instructions. I like the
boot loader. It reminds me of the Sun's boot monitor.
    I did the reset-nvram, set-defaults, reset-all. It didn't
    help though.
I don't think it is my power supply, either. The reason why I
don't think this is the problem is I can watch DVD and listen
to audio CD just fine. My sleep problem would only occur
when I try to rip an audio CD. I can assure you that I draw
plenty of power just playing a DVD movie.
My guess is I have a power management configuration
issue or a hardware problem. Since this has a Unix core
underneath, I started poking around in the usual places
for log files. I found the familiar /var/log and stumbled
on system.log. Looking at the file, I found something
    that caught my eye.
Aug 17 01:06:19 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Doing a 'grep overtemp system.log', I got the following:
Aug 17 01:04:13 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Aug 17 01:04:37 Jim-Fridlunds-Computer kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.

If you look at the time stamp, you'll see that each event
is only a few seconds apart. This matches with what
I was seeing. Machine goes to sleep. I press the power
button and it wakes up and goes back to sleep. One
big endless cycle. The only way I managed to get out
of it is to quit iTunes and to eject the CD.
Yes, I did install the Xcode 2 development kit that came
with the Mini MAC OSX setup. I eventually want to write
software for the Mac. So, I most likely installed the
CHUD tools package that you had mentioned.
I think the equivalent command line command for
disabling the nap feature is 'hwprefs -v cpu_nap=false'.
When I do that, I get the overtemp event and my mini
    goes to sleep. Zzz.
In any case, my mini seems to be detecting false overtemp
condition. Either I have a bad temp sensor or my power
management overtemp threshold is set way too low. It's
possible encoding audio CDs is enough to heat up the
PPC core, but it happens way too fast. I'm thinking my
temperature sensors are not set correctly. If anyone has
schematics for the mini, it would most likely be a Dallas
temp sensor chip. I'm not ready to open up my mini yet
since it is still under warranty. I'll take it in the Apple
store in Walnut Creek this weekend.
Anyway, thank you guys for all your help. I found my
experience on this forum to be quite pleasant. People
    here are very helpful.

  • Audio interface loses connection every time my mac mini goes to sleep

Using M-audio fastrack pro and newest mac mini dual 2.5 on Mountain Lion 10.8.4 Intel core i5.
I have to restart to make it go away, it also just happened when I unplugged my monitor and plugged it back in...... Samsung syncmaster....
Anyone had similar problems with Mountain Lion?

    Hi Mate,
Used to have one of those, it was a real pain for dropping out on me, i don't know if you're aware but they don't support sleep mode.  Meaning that if you were to sleep your mac you need to pull the usb cable out first, and plug it back in when you resume.  If you don't you have restart your machine to have it work again.
And yup, it's a right pain.  Mine was particularly sensitive - it dropped out when i switched my mixer on a few times which concerned me, found it ran much better when connected to AC Power.

  • Troubleshoot mac mini unresponsive after sleep --- bluetooth problems?

    Hi,
my in-laws' mac mini has a hard time getting back from sleep sometimes, and this morning we lost some mission critical work because of this. The only peripherials it uses are a wireless keyboard (Hungarian layout bought in Hungary) and a magic trackpad (bought in the US alongside the mini). We tried restarting the mini and both wireless pieces multiple times, this did not help. The mini had Lion, and I presume it automatically got the 10.7.1 update last week (but I cannot check whether that happened overnight last night).
Is there anything else my family can do apart from trying to press some keys some times, press the power button of the wireless things, and press the power button of the mini briefly (to activate) or long (to power down and then restart)?
Did we lose bluetooth or the display?
Did Apple do anything about similar previous concerns?
    Thanks.

An update: this problem is observationally equivalent to having lost the display. I already had problems connecting a VGA display through the mini's HDMI port, but now the Thunderbolt might have lost the display too. I see that others are having similar problems, probably linked to 10.7.1. We'll see if the PRAM's reset helps.
    "It just works"?
    Well done, Apple.

  • My Mac Mini don't work with 3d Televisions.

    Hello all,
I have a Mac Mini, and recently i buy a television by Sony 3d (46").
For my surprise, the television dont accept the signal from Mac Mini. O then screen appears the message (Signal Incompatible).
I change all configurations, but nothing. I call to Sony and they dont have idea about the problem.
    Cam anyone help me?
    Best regards,
    Marcelo

Assuming your using a new Mac Mini with a HDMI to HDMI and one of the 4 HDMI ports on the Sony, the Mini will only recognise your screen when you either wake from sleep or on a restart. I've used this on a few Sony 3D TV's without any problems.  Have you tried using one of the two HDMI's on the left hand side of the screen (HDMI 2 and 3 on the remote)
However, if you're using an old mac mini with the DVI connector,  some of the convertor cables don't work, so it's worth checking that first.

  • My Mac Mini log-off/sleep fails

I have a Mid 2011 Mac Mini, 2.7, Intel Core Duo i7,model 5,2.  My usual habit is to log-off for the day, then select sleep.  This has worked just fine for the past 15 months. ( I purchased it in Feb 2012.)
A couple of weeks ago, when I sat down and hit the space bar to log-in, it instead showed my desktop.  ??  It made me think 'someone" has control of my computer & is doing me some harm.  This happened again several days later. So I decided to shut down daily.
After a while, I decided to try log-off/sleep again.  But this time, my screen stayed black, and I noticed that my mac mini's on-light no longer pulsed. So I hit the start button.  Nothing happened.  So I turned off the power strip & when I turned it back on, the familiar chime came on and up came my desktop. Otherwise everything seems to be working well.  I tested log-off/sleep again today, and, sure enough, after about 2-1/2 hours it did it again.  I'm doing daily backups now just in case.
This really bothers me.  Can anyone tell me what's going on?  Should I contact tech support (I'm still covered by AppleCare).???

Hi Sharon, could be many things...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Speaker noise while Mac Mini is in sleep mode

    Hello together,
my Mac Mini produces strange hizz/buzz sounds for approx. half a second every few minutes while it sleeps.
The noise is quite loud and it is a rather annoying sound. I experience these sounds if I connect the Mac Mini via the normal audio out connector on both my Audioengine 5 speakers as well as a Denon amp.
Is there any way to get rid of this noise?

    Thanks for your idea!
Unfortunately, I don't think that's it - all cell phones are away from the machine (and i know the "dadididida" sound of cell phones quite well).
I also thought that it could be a huge machine that is switched on somewhere but then again I have my stuff behind a surge protector so that I think that any such stuff would be filtered. The fact that it is periodic and happened here in the states as well as in Europe makes me wonder if it is an issue with the mac itself.
Anyone else who has that issue?

  • Why does my mac mini shutdown during sleep mode?

After I put the Mini into sleep mode, it shuts itself off after a few hours.  I tried resetting the SMC per instructions from another forum post (turn the Mini off; pull the power cord for 10 seconds; plug back in; wait 5 seconds; turn the Mini back on) but that didn't work.  Anything else I can try?
    Thanks,
    iBob52

  • My Mac Mini goes to sleep when I turn off my TV.

Hello and thanks in advance for all help. I have a Intel mac mini that I currently have hooked up via DVI/DVI cable to my Sony LCD television. I recently upgraded the OS to 10.5 from 10.4. The issue that I am having after the OS upgrade has to do with the Mac going to sleep after I turn the TV off. It also goes to sleep if I set up the display to sleep after a period of time even if I have the computer itself set to never sleep. Right now I have the computer set to never sleep and the display to never sleep but when we turn the TV off the computer goes to sleep anyway. The reason why I need the computer to stay awake is because we use a Magicjack at our home for our local phone service and it is plugged into one of the USB ports on the computer. If the computer goes to sleep we loose our home phone service. I am wondering what could be causing the computer to sleep when the display is turned off. When I upgraded to 10.5 I did a clean install and not a upgrade.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks very much to all.

Thanks so much for your help. This fixed things perfect. The only thing I may add for anyone else that has this issue is that it is important to reconnect the power cable to the computer first and then after a few seconds reconnect all of your other cables. The first time I tried it I reconnected the power cable last and it still didn't fix things. I gave it another try reconnecting the power cable first and now everything is perfect.
    Thanks again for your help,
    Rich

  • Events in iCal on Mac Mini don't upload to MobileMe during Sync

I have many iCal events on my Mac Mini, running OSX 10.6.8, that don't sync up to my MobileMe iCal and thus don't sync back down to my MacBook Pro, also running OSX 10.6.8, nor to my iPhone. As a result, I'm not getting notified of events that I should be. This is a real problem when I'm away from home. However, an event I just posted today on my Mac Mini did sync up. What is going on here?

    Greetings,
This sounds like a caching issue.
    1. First make an iCal backup:  Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal 1 at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
    2. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
    3. Launch iCal and test.
    Hope that helps!

  • Mac Mini/Mountain Lion sleeps but won't wake up (or crashes) every night.

    Hi everybody,
I have a mid-2010 mac mini server on which I recently installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (without server stuff).
Every night, it stops responding. The led is on but the display is off and it does not respond to mouse/keyboard. I even tried remote desktop.
The only solution is the power button...
    What I already did :
    - Reset Pram/Nvram
    - Reset SMC
I also took a look at the console and I found a message that is fired just before the machine stops responding.

    Any clue ?

Hi, I'm quite interested by your issue, because i get the exact same one.
On my mini (late 2012), system doesn t wake up from sleep if it has slept for more than 1 hour.

When I try and wake up system before the programmed maintenance wakeup, it wakes up fine.
But as soon as this programmed time has passed, it just won t wake up, I have to force switch it off via the power button and restart it.

Do you still have the issue or is it ok now for you ?
I'll try in the upcoming days to plug the freebox in the thunderbolt display's adapter instead of the macmini's rj45.
