Mac Mini Early 2006 Mini PCIe SATA Card Not Showing Up

I'm trying to add a couple of SATA ports to an early 2006 mac mini by swapping out the mini PCIe AirPort for a SATA card. This is the card I'm using http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/HDD-Controllers/SATA-Cards/2-Port-Mini-PC I-Express-Internal-SATA-II-Controller-Card~MPEXSATA22I, problem is it doesn't seem to show up when installed in the mac. The card works perfectly when installed in a different machine.
The AirPort card shows up fine when swapped back, so the connector's okay. But with the SATA card installed, System Profiler says the computer doesn't contain any PCI cards. I've tried resetting the NVRAM with no success. I don't even see an entry for the device it in the ioreg output, so I'm thinking there might be a power issue. Does the mac mini supply both 3.3V and 5V to the mini PCIe connector? Is there anything special I need to do to get this card to show up?
Thanks.

There a long thread about this on the 123MacMini forum.  At page three, they mention drivers (you need drivers, right?) and there is a link...

Actually, that thread might refer to a different, but similar, card.
Don't know if it finally worked.  Be very interested to hear.  (Not sure why Apple is/has always shunned eSATA?)

  • ThinkCentre M71e PCIe network card not showing up

I bought a ThinkCentre M71e (3134-C4U) with the intention of using it connected to several separate physical networks.  I bought a PCIe Network card (SuperMicro AOC-SG-I2) with two additional network ports to use for this purpose. As far as I can tell, this network card should work with no problems - it's a PCIe 2.0 x4 card, which should work in the system's PCIe 2.0 x16 slot.
However, the computer does not recognize that the network card is there!  To test whether it is an issue with the card, I pulled a similar card (known working HP NC360T) from another computer, and this computer did not recognize it either!
What can I do about this?  The computer is useless to me without the additional network connection.
I noted that, while the specs explicitly say "PCI Express 2.0 x16", the Hardware Maintenance Manual calls it a "PCI Express x16 graphics slot" (emphasis mine).  Does this mean that Lenovo deliberately prevents cards other than graphics cards fro mbeing recognized in this slot?
UPDATE: I see now that someone else had this exact question two years ago, with no response.

  • Early 2006 Mini Fan/LED Problems

Just posting here in case anyone is having the same problem.
I was having problems with my early 2006 Mini (Core Solo). In order to boot the machine, I would have to reset the PMU, but then the fan would run at full speed the entire time the computer was powered on, including boot time and shutdown. In addition, the status LED would not work. I tried resetting the SMU, but I would subsuquently have to reset the PMU again to get the machine to boot and the problem would still be there.
The solution turned out to be very simple. I was using the wrong power supply. I had a 85 watt supply from the G4 minis. The supply designed for the intel minis is the 110 watt one. Once I plugged in the 110 watt supply, the machine powered right up without complaint.

    Edit:
Run the Apple Hardware Test to see if the fan is working properly.

  • Boot MEGA 180 from PCI Sata card

My onboard IDE controller has given up the ghost so I have purchased a PCI sata card to use a spare sata disk, the problem is I can't see any way to get the 180 to boot from the PCI card.  Anyone any ideas?

Yep - I disabled the PATA ports.
No - the card has no bios - I guess this is the problem.

  • [nForce] PCI SATA Card...Will it work?

I'm planning on installing a PCI Sata card to run 2 WD 80Gb drives...My question is, will I run into any problems when trying to install Xp???  I know that the card came with a CD, but will windows recognize the card and load the drivers automatically?  Thanks in advance and sorry if this a noob question!

if you look on the CD that comes with the card, there maybe some drivers that you have to copy to a floppy disk, for windows xp
as you startup windows setup, it prompts "Press F6 to install third-party SCSI/RAID controller" (or something like that). then insert this floppy when prompted
maybe if you tell us what SATA card you have / intend to buy, someone can offer better advice...

  • Should I Get A PCI Sata Card For Internal Drives

I'm transferring Files from old G4 to a new G5 and it's taking forever. The sata drives seem to work slower. When I transfer the same way(Firewire)on my G4 it's much faster. Someone said to get a PCI sata card and hook up my internals to that instead of the factory connection. That it's faster that way. I'm going to have to burn to dvd and transfer that way, but it seems to defeat the purpose. Any suggestions are appreciated.
    G5 Dual Core 2.0 with 2.5 GB and 2 250 Drives

Come to think of it, the last time I needed to transfer some media from my G4 to G5, the quickest and easiest way (mind you they are in separate rooms), was to pop out the G4 drive and use one of these cheap IDE USB adapters. Since the G5 is USB2, the process was pretty quick.
My guess about the G5 in target mode is there must be some kind of overhead, but the SATA is FAR and away faster than the FW connection between them, so a SATA card won't help.
Shane Ross and I are currently using "popsicle stick" internal RAIDs in our G5s. See this thread:

My mini with IOS 7.0.6 is not showing an option for wish list in the options. What is happening?

    The three Rs to IOS, try them in order until the issue is resolved;
Restart - Press and hold the Power button until the red Power Off stripe appears. Swipe to power off. Press and hold the Power button to turn the device back on.
Reset - Press & hold the Power and Home buttons simultaneously, ignoring the red power off slider, until the Apple logo appears. Then release both buttons.
Restore - Connect the device to the Mac or PC with which it is usualy synced and use the iTunes app to restore the device to the factory settings. You can then restore the device with a previously made backup or set it up as new.

SD Card not showing after Mountain lion Update
Since the update to Mountain Lion, the SD slot does not show up in Finder.
Someone gave a fix using the killall in Terminal, and that worked only once.  I have not been able to get that fix to work again.
The only saving grace for me is that my SD Card us is always from my Nikon camera, and Nikon ViewNX 2 software is able to see and read from the card.
Killall may have worked partially in that I no longer get the error message telling me that I have removed the SD card improperly, and need to dismount it first.
However, Finder still cannot see it.

Those are basics ... Been there, done that, first.
Then you should hava posted all the troubleshooting you already accomplished.
Does the card show up in System Information? Or is that another one of the "basics" you've already looked into?
Does it show up in Disk Utility? If so, have you tried formatting it there to determine if it is a formatting problem?

  • Digital Audio Broken on a Mac Mini (early 2006)?

I've got an early 2006 Mac Mini 1.83GHz which I'm trying to use as an HTPC. When plugging in an TOSlink to miniplug cable to the audio port I get the "flipover" to Digital Out in sound preferences but no sound from my Pioneer AV receiver. I've made all the correct adjustments in the receiver preferences and tested them with a iMac and sound plays through just fine.
Headphone and Internal speaker work fine on the Mini and the cable is fine as noted above with the iMac test. Is it possible that the optical digital audio portion of this jack is bad?
Apple Support doesn't seem to think it is hardware related. I've re-installed OSX and checked permissions. I don't have the restore disk to be able to do a Apple Hardware Test and the Leopard disk does not contain it.
Any ideas as I've run out aside from taking in to an Apple Store for evaluation?

Took to Apple Store and they fixed the unit with a new digital audio card. $49. I'm happy.

  • No sound no audio in Mac Mini Early 2006

I'm using a Early 2006 version of Mac Mini, I have upgraded the CPU to Core 2 Due 2.0Ghz, and ram to 2G. So it runs Mac OS X 10.7.5. Recently, I have no sound but used to have in the past. I've checked systems and I have no sound output. Output volume is grayed out and shows muted. Also on System Report, the "Audio" page is totally blank which used to show Intel HDA specs. I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC (twice)- that didn't work. I've tried plugging in speakers, headphones, etc. Doesn't work. Is this a hardware problem? Any ideas? I have not tried to re-boot from original optical disc and press C, but I will try to look for the old disc first.

I suspect you disconnected something during the disassembly/reassembly. Take it apart and check your work

  • Mac Pro Boot from PCIe SATA Card

Is it possible to boot a Mac Pro from a PCIe Sata adapter? I bought a PCIe SATA III card to connect to my 64 Gb C300 SSD Drive.  The internal SATA II drives are not fast enough to take full advantage of the C300.

Old Thread But Great News for MAc and PC Laptop Owners I know and trust this company and just bought this for my MAc Pro it boots up the hard drive a couple ways.  In Mac hold down the option key and or once in MAc OS tell it to startup disk the external Sata (eSATA)
Worked 100% on my Mac Pro 2008 and this works on Laptops Mac and Windows
One catch its expensive but can go up to 6G WOOOOOOOOWs
Only card out of  TON I have tried that will boot at least MAc OSX dunno about windows/Boot Camp but I think theoretically it will with the "Option" key wait and be patient and once you choose the sata drive maybe you can boot boot camp dunno?   Actually yes you can once you set the startup disk to the esata boot camp windows will boot!!!   Wooooooooot
