Mac Mini Early 2009 No display

Hi,
I have a new Mac mini and when I try to hook up tomy Sony SXRD HDTV, I get a blank/black screen. I do get to see the blue/gray screen with apple logo and gears moving but nothing after that.
I have tried both miniDVI and miiDP and no luck. I tried the miniDP adpater with my macbook and no hitches. I also, tried running safe mode but same result the screen goes blank. When I try installing Leopard again by holding the ALT key the computer hangs.
I have also tried resetting PRAM and that did not work either. After all this playing around, I know the TV, cable, adpter are ok. I did try runing the mini on a Apple Monitor and it worked without any problems.
I have run out of options and would definately like to know what I could do to get this problem fixed. PLEASE HELP

Do you have a second Mac or PC at your disposal? If so, I recommend trying to make a VNC connection, or with two Macs running Leopard, set up screen sharing. In this way, from the second computer, you will be able to see what the mini is doing, e.g. what resolution it is outputting to the Sony. You will even be able to change the resolution setting of the mini from the second computer, hopefully in a way that causes the Sony screen to light up. Once that is done, that setting should persist and thereafter the mini and the Sony should work together as expected.

  • How to make Mac Mini (Early 2009) sleep in Lion?

After upgrading to Lion, my Mac Mini (Early 2009) stopped going to sleep from the Apple menu or from the keyboard. The problem has persisted with all point releases of Lion. The computer went to sleep with the same peripherals just fine under Snow Leopard.
The display goes to sleep but the computer itself neither suspends nor hibernates. The power light is lit and doesn't pulsate. Measuring how many watts the device draws from the power socket shows that it's not sleeping. It wakes up so quickly that it must be only the display sleeping.
Console log shows nothing when trying to sleep.
Changing the hibernate mode from the default 3 to 25 makes no difference. Running the PleaseSleep app make no difference.
How to put Mac Mini (Early 2009) to sleep (preferably hibernation--not just suspension) under Lion?

    Hello,
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • How can i install 8 gb ram on a mac mini early 2009 when it says i dont need the EFI firmware 2.1?i can only install 4 gb but the side of OWC says i can install 8 gb? what to do?

i have a mac mini early 2009 and i want to install 8 gb ram but it doesn,t work.
it says on the OWC site that i have to install the EFI firmware 2.1 update but it won,t let me,it says(the mac mini)that i don,t need this update.
my kernel is 32bit but my EFI is 64 bit,how can i install 64 bit so i can use the 8GB cause with 32 bit i can,t use more than 4gb ram

    Check your computer's EFI Boot ROM version;
    1. From the Apple () menu, choose About This Mac
    2. Click More Info Under Contents
    3. Select Hardware
    If your Mac mini's Boot ROM version is the following or more recent, then you do not need the update to use 8 GB of RAM;
    Boot ROM Version: MM31.0081.B06

  • Hard drive for mac mini early 2009 model

    Hi,
My hard drive stopped working, and I would like to purchase a new one.
After checking with several vendors, I could not get an official answer if their drive is supported by Mac Mini early 2009 model.
Can you please advice what hard drive vendors/models do you know are supported?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Mac mini uses a 2'5" hard disk, and near all of these hard disks will work with your computer. You can buy the hard disk in OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
If you want more information, you can only use 9.5 mm hard drives, so search them in OWC and you will find hard drives that will work with your computer. HGST drives have a good reputation and work very well

  • Confirm iSight with Mac mini (early 2009)?

Can someone please confirm that an iSight (external Firewire 400) camera actually works with their Mac mini (early 2009)? Of course, that will need a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 adapter.
I can't get mine to work. I've used two different iSight cameras that work on other (older) Mac minis. I've used the cable that comes with the iSights and another Firewire 400 cable.
When I plug it in the iSight makes a noise and the light comes on briefly (for a second or two) and then it goes off. No applications that require a camera (like Photo Booth) see the camera.
I'm worried that this Mac mini may not have enough power to run the iSight, which is probably also an ominous sign for unpowered external Firewire drives.
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

Well, it seems that I have found my sad answer!!! The very same issue. New MAC MINI, Old and nice isight camera, which works perfectly well with my powerbook G4 even now, but not with my new mac mini.
I am sure I have the correct cable (it allowed migration of my entire admin account from my powerbook to my new mac mini), but it still does not work between isight and new mac mini.
Having said this, I certainly remember plugging my isight to my new mac mini using this new adapter cable (800-400mb/sec - orange flat one) and it was working at least i saw my image.
I do not remember which application i used (skype or ichat) but i certainly remember my satisfaction with my new cable. Since then i did not need video conversations, but yesterday i needed one, and i realized that my isight is not recognized by my macmini any more!
I am saying this because it might not be only a power issue, it could be that multiple updates of i sight on my old powerbook passed in block to my new mac mini and this allowed isight working. In contrast, those update are not installable on Leopard operating systems.
I think, since i saw those two devices (isight and new mac mini) working together nicely, i deleted my entire migration account (having found a different way of keeping only absolutely necessary things on my new mac mini). I was thinking about this all day today. Can this be it? drivers issue? the non-installable on Leopard updates that otherwise can be migrated en-block from the old system?
I am sorry to confuse you all, if I did, but what do you think about it please?

  • Mac Mini Early 2009 Won't Boot After Mavericks Update

I had Mavericks installed on my Mac for a while now and recently, it did a software update... Since then, I rebooted the system when it asked me to and it has not been able to boot up since then. It reaches the Apple Screen, tries to load the OS and my Mac shuts off Completely...
I recently upgraded the Hard Drive on the system, so I am currently using my old hard drive running OS X 10.5.8... I plugged in my Hard Drive that has OS X Mavericks on it and I tried to verify the disk. When I do so in Disk Utility, I get this message:
I went on a couple of websites where people had this same issue, and I followed the instructions where someone said to open Disk Utility, select the Partition and Press "CMD + i". I got the name of my drive from Disk Identifier. I opened Terminal and typed in "sudo /sbin/fsck_hfs -yprf /dev/disk1s2"
It ran the code and this is the output...

After all of that was done, I am now able to go back to Disk Utility and Completely Verify My Disk.
What should my next step be? Should I try booting to Mavericks from that hard drive or should I try to Repair the Disk?

I upgraded to Mavericks, and had a "grey screen of death" when re-booting for the first time.  Re-setting the PRAM fixed it for me.  Worth a try:

  • Start Snow Leopard from USB on a mac mini early 2009

    Hi.
It is possible to start Snow Leopard from a USB drive (Pendrive, USB disk, etc)??????
The DVD drive of my mac mini doesn't work properly and I have some problems with my HDD.
    Thanks in advance.
    BR

Get at least a 16GB USB thumb drive and use this tecnique to make a bootable USB drive:
    Borrowed from Kappy,
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard being sure to select the external drive as the target.
Note that you will need a Snow Leopard DVD. The above will only work for you if you can boot your computer from a Snow Leopard DVD. If you have a new model that came with Lion pre-installed then the above will not work because a Snow Leopard retail DVD cannot boot your model.

  • Mac mini early 2009 - can't install Lion?

Hi, I can't quite believe this - can I really not install Lion because my mac mini only has 1GB of RAM? This is very disappointing. I've just got myself an iPhone 4S, so effectively I can't use any of the iCloud features because my mac mini can't run Lion. And apparently there is no alternative. Thanks a lot for letting me know that in advance, Apple! That wasn't mentioned in the vast amount of advertising I've been subjected to lately!
So is there anything I can do about this? It's ridiculous that my phone is apparently cleverer than my desktop. I bought the mini because I was told it was a reliable, workhorse-type computer, and now I find I can't use a major feature of the new iPhones. I might as well be using a PC! In fact, I'll have to turn iCloud off on my phone again now, as it won't bloody sync with anything anyway!
    I'd appreciate any guidance here,
    Suz

Hi Suz, it's pretty easy to upgrade/add more RAM sometimes, & recommend professional do it other times, & as Allan says, more is better, & I'd hate to run Lion with only 4GB of RAM. Yours may not be one of the easy ones to do.
    Find your Mini here...

Then on this page scroll down to your Mini & click the Memoery link under it...

  • Using Tiger on a Mac mini (early 2009)

I'm looking at using a mini as a Zimbra server; however, Zimbra for Leopard is currently available only as a beta release. Obviously I could use an older mini that came with Tiger--I have a couple of them available--but the speed improvement (going from 1.83 to 2.26 GHz) and higher RAM capacity (from 2 GB to 4GB) of the newer minis is attractive.
Does anyone know if Tiger can be run on the new minis? I realize that installation could be an issue but I've had success in the past by installing it on an external HD (using an older Intel Mac) and then booting the newer machine from that HD.

Okay, thank you. I'd have liked to see some reference or actual test, but your responses were enough to get me to do some more searching, and I found that both LowEndMac and Wikipedia list 10.5.6 as the minimum OS, while Apple has a warning against downgrading from the bundled version of the OS at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186

  • What hard drive would my mac mini early 2009 need if i wanted to upgrade it?

i wanted to upgrade my hard drive will any hardrive fit it or has it got to be something special?
    please reply many thanks

    I would recommend:
    (a) get an external USB case for your new drive (just a few $$/££s),
    http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-Portable-External-Enclosure-Aluminum/dp/B003AMGHL Q
    (b) put the new drive in that and connect it to your mini as an external USB drive
    (c) get SuperDuper (google it)
    (d) make a bootable, clone copy of your entire internal drive on the external USB one
    (e) make the external USB drive your startup drive
    (f) run this way for a few days to make sure the new larger external drive is OK - it will be slower (USB) but it should be OK
    (g) then open your mini and swap the drives
    (h) restart from your larger internal drive, and put the smaller original drive in the external case
    (j) after a few more days, running off your internal larger drive, you can reformat the external drive as a useful backup external drive.

  • HT3986 Mac mini later 2009-- can i install windows 7 -64 bit on it?

    hi there,
can i install dual system on mac mini later 2009?
    windows 7 32bit or 64 bit?
    thanks

Although I have the "Early" 2009 mini, I believe they're close enough.
I have a dual system installed. Mac OS X Mountain Lion and Windows 7 64 bit. I have 8GB of RAM.
You should be aware though that Apple does not officially support the 64 bit version of Windows 7 on this machine, although it seems to be working for the most part using Boot Camp 4.0 drivers.
My only complaint is about the nForce Ethernet Driver. There seems to be some problem with it. Whenever the nVidia Control Panel for video is launched, there is an error reported:
The ethernet itself appears to be working fine using some driver dated back to 2010. While I can go to nVidia's website and locate an updated driver for the GeForce 9400 GPU, I cannot seem to find one for the nForce Ethernet. Honestly, I am not even interested in the Network Control panel, but I get another error when I try to uninstall it.
Would be nice is this could be fixed. Windows 7 32 bit didn't have this issue but I want to run the 64 bit version so I can see all of my RAM.

  • Mac mini gets green tinted display severel times. Help... :(

I just bought a new 2,3 ghz Mac Mini 3 days ago to use as a mediacenter.
I have it set up using my Phillips Tv as screen with a HDMI cable.
Audio is toslink to my amp.
I have a eyetv hybrid connected and a belkin usb hub with severel WD disk.
My problem is that suddenly the display turns green for a couple of seconds
and after that everything on the screen is tinted green.
Sometimes after a while it turns itself back to the right colours again.
There is no consistency in when it does this, and again no consistency in
when it turns itself back again.
The funny thing (as i see it) is that i had a Mac Mini mid 2009 connected
exactly as i have setup the new Mac Mini. And everything worked fine.
I run sabnzbd, air video server, eyetv 3 and XBMC on it. There is aswell
a python script that lauches sickbeard on startup running.
Can anybody please help me to what the problem is???

Try a different gamma setting to brighten up movies. To do this, go into Displays Preferences and click on the Color tab and then the Calibrate button. Put a check mark in the box for Expert Mode and click Continue to start the calibration process. When you get to the screen for gamma, move the slider to the left and it should brighten up middle levels of the picture. See if that helps with movies.
As to RAM, it depends on which generation mini you have as to how much RAM it will take. And you haven't said which one you have.

  • First is it possible to connect my imac eaRLY 2009 as display for my macbook white 2010?

first is it possible to connect my imac eaRLY 2009 as display for my macbook white 2010? If so what exact cables on the market do i need to purchase to make this work? Please help me out. I cannot afford to buy a new mac so temporarily this is my only solution.
Thanks to all my Mac buddies for your assistance

    The Early2009 20" or 24" iMac don't have any video-in capabilities.
Depending on your needs, you can investigate or tryout AirDisplay or ScreenRecycler which enable use of a Mac from another Mac or Windows PC through network/wireless connections.

  • Mac Mini Late 2009 - Lost monitor mirror after Mountain Lion Update

I have a mac mini late 2009, mirror to dual monitors was working fine prior to Mountain Lion update. After update I have lost that function. The icon top right is gone. Basic functions like that should never disappear. Please fix on upcoming os builds.
    System preferences Mirror options checked.
I have been running dual monitor on this mac since purchase. Monitor 1 is 24" display, Montor 2 is a 32" 720dpi tv only used for watching videos. This set up has been running well.
The dual monitor function works fine but I never use it that way. I am interested in "mirror" option when watching a video from various applications.
Again this was working fine until ML update.
Any one else experience this issue?

Oh. You are so in jail.
Plug the mini straight into the wall power supply.
You do have 4 - 8GB memory installed, right?
Disconnect everything but power and the display port to regular monitor connection. Make sure that external monitor is switched to the type of connection: DVI, HDMI, VGA. Wrong setting and your mini could be booted up sneering at you from behind a dark screen.
    Boot mini.
    Any change?

You really need a newer Mac Mini with a true HDMI output, because that Mac Mini's DVI output does not support Audio.
You might try a 3.5mm to RCA adapter
from the Mac Mini's headphone jack to the TV's audio input,
but that would require being able to select the Audio input in the TVs menu while using it's HDMI input.
Optionally you could also use an external 2.1 Speaker System or patch the audio from the Mac Mini to your home stereo system to enhance that older Mac Mini's audio.
