Might try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

  • Mac mini ejecting hardware

hi guys, mac mini keeps ejecting external usb 3 hard drive, any ideas?

How long does it mount for?
Is it long enough to add that drive to System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy pane?
Did you install any Driver Software for any drive?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Mac Mini: Error-Disk Full-UNABLE TO BOOT-WHITE SCREEN at STARTUP

    Please Help!
Last night a message popped up saying "STARTUP DISK FULL/almost full...Delete files to make disk space available"
Immediately after that message the system froze and I waited for a hour to see if it would unfreeze by itself
It didn't so I then pressed and held the power button until the system shut down
Now when I power up my mac mini, all I see is a white screen
Please advise...any and all help would be very much appreciated

Which model Mac mini is it? If it is quite an old one it might not in pre-boot stage know how to drive a brand new style keyboard. You can double check the keyboard itself is ok by plugging it in to your MacBook when it is already booted.
You could also test the DVD in your MacBook.
If you have not used the DVD drive in the Mac mini for a while it might have got dirty. Eject the disc if you can and carefully blow in to the disc opening to try and clear any dust.
Normally, methods of ejecting the disk would be -
Holding down the mouse button while you start the computer
Pressing the eject key on the keyboard
and various other methods that need the computer to be already up and running
Any Apple stores in your area?
It could possibly be still trying to boot from the hard disk - if your not able to get the keyboard recognised then obviously your not yet able to get it to accept a command to boot from a different drive. If your Mac mini is an older model and hence not in pre-boot mode able to recognise the new keyboard, do you have any friends with an old plastic Mac keyboard?
An older keyboard would be one that looks like this http://www.user-agent.org/stuff/images/mac_keyboard_02.jpg
You probably have a new one that looks like http://media.macworld.co.uk/cmsdata/products/10514/07kb_top.jpg
If you feel up to it, an option would be to take the Mac mini apart and remove the hard disk, then if you have the bits, put it in an external case and you can then connect it to the MacBook as an external drive. I have all those bits available to me but many ordinary users don't.

  • Mac mini ejects installation DVDs at startup

    Hello,
I have a Mac mini core duo 1.66 Ghz with 2 GB, Superdrive, its is running Tiger will all updates and firmware. I decided to upgrade to Leopard. The computer is booted up, I insert the installation DVD for Leopard, double click on the intall icon, asks me to click on reboot. When rebooting the DVD is ejected and it boots from the HD normally. I tried pressing C on the keyboard at boot up and the DVD still gets ejected. I tried from System prefs the disk startup as the DVD, but the same. I thought it was my Superdrive so I bought a replacement, a Pioneer, it came with a Panasonic one, and the same thing. So I have ruled out the Superdrives. I tried the Tiger installation and the same thing, it ejects it as well. I tried the DVDs on other computers and they are not ejected, the installer runs. HELP!!!!

I'm having the same problem. I have a mac mini, 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4, running OS 10.3. The CD drive is a Matshita CW-8124, CD-RW/DVD-ROM. I wanted to see if I needed to upgrade firmware prior to installing leopard, but couldn't find any mention of firmware for this system on the apple site.
The cd ejects on restart. If I put in the cd and shutdown, then boot while holding down the option key, it ejects the cd prior to bringing up the boot option screen. With the boot option screen up, I install the cd, but it doesn't see it.

  • If I have a Mac Mini ( no Disk Drive ) Can I Still Use Boot Camp ?

Hi, I have a ma mini... but i have came to a conclusion that I have no disk drive... so can i still use bootcamp ? I was wondering because all of the tutorials I watch, they tell me to insert my disk into the disk drive.
    -Thanks for The Help

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you have a Mac mini without a built-in SuperDrive, you have two ways to install Windows on your Mac using Boot Camp:
    - If you have Windows in a ISO file > open Boot Camp Assistant, tick the option to create a Windows installation USB drive and follow the steps.
    - If you have Windows in a DVD > buy an external optical drive, connect it to your computer, open Boot Camp Assistant and follow the steps to install Windows.
Don't forget to download Windows support software, and install it just after finishing the Windows installation.
If you need help installing Windows, print this file > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf

  • Mac mini hard disk keep crashing

The hard disk of my Mac mini has been replaced twice during the one year warranty period. It crashed again  recently and I was unable to reformat or reinstalled the OS as suggested in the  manual. I worry if my Mac mini was not due to hard disk problem alone as Apple products can not be that unreliable where by you need to change hard disk every coypu pole of months. And now the warranty period is over and wonder how Apple can help me in this matter.

Question mark  icon flashes when I boot up the Mac mini. When halfway copying file under the recovery method suggest in the manual, error appeared and can cannot continue copying the file. In some of the trials, HD no longer seen by the Mac. I am quite new to the Mac, and not sure which SMART error you are referring to.  I may try to approach regional service centre in Singapore. Thanks for your info.

  • Mac Mini Startup Disk

    Hi,
I have just got a Mac Mini, Dual Core and am trying to startup from a firewire HDD just as I seem able to do on my Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz and Powermac G4 533 MHz. I have OS 10.4.8 installed on the Firewire HDD yet when I select 'Startup Disk' from System Preferences I do not see the OS on the firewire dirve as an option. Any help/suggestions would be very gratefully received. Thanks very much.
Mac Mini 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hello! Your issue probably is related to the version of OSX you're trying to boot from. If the external is the exact same OS that's on the Mini it will work but if the OS is one for the PB or the G4 it's not likely to work. Take the Mini disk and do a new install on an external drive and you should have no problems or if you like you can "clone" the Mini drive to the external and it will work also. Tom

  • Mac Mini, no disk drive

Recently bought a new Mac Mini to replace the old one I had used for 5 years. The old one had a disk drive, the new one doesn't. I had installed by disk Elements 11 last summer on the old one. Totally forgot to transfer Elements to the new one, and of course the disk is useless on the new Mini. Any way I can transfer to the new computer?

    Hi Happilyretired,
You can still use your Elements 11, please download it from :

  • AppleTV & Mac Mini as Disk Server

    Hi,
I have just bought an Apple Tv and would like to get the setup right. Can someone please check what my idea is and correct or suggest better way if I have it wrong?
I will be connecting the ATV into the LCD TV and connecting to the wireless network.
I have a large itunes library and iphoto library and a movie library (not in itunes) on 3 external drives which I usually connect my powerbook G4 to.
The idea would be to set up a media centre ie not have to connect my laptop to the external drives and also be able to take my laptop away on trips and leave the media centre/ATV working while I'm gone.
Currently I have two itunes libraries, a lossless library on external disk, and a compressed library on laptop's internal disk.
I don't see any real advantage in having my compressed library on my laptop and it uses disk space I would rather have free for other apps etc.
I would therefore like to go down to one library (lossless). I can use a downloadble utility for loading up my ipod with compressed tracks direct from the lossless library without the need for a second compressed library.
My problem here is that the library if loaded onto the ATV would probably run out of space. Or is it possible to have the lossless library stream to the ATV without it being held locally?
I have an old Mac Mini, low spec, with no wireless card, running Tiger. I thought of using this as a disk server, connecting my 3 external drives to it, and connecting it via ethernet cable to my wireless router. These disks would then be visible on the network to wireless laptops and to the ATV.
My question regarding this would be if having the disks connected to the mini would affect performance and is it possible to stream from an itunes library on the mini to the ATV without having any tunes actually on the ATV?
With regard to iphoto I think I would have that on the ATV snyc'd from my laptop.
With regard to movies. I have lots of VIDEO_TS folders on an external drive. It is possible to get ATV to stream these from the disk connected to the mini? This is possible using Front Row so just wondered if that is also possible on the ATV?
If not, I guess the movies have to be in itunes and therefore I have to convert all to a format readable by itunes. If that is the case rather than loading large movies into my itunes library I would like to convert them to reference movies in QT and then import the reference movies into itunes. If I do that will ATV be able to stream the full versions via the itunes library reference movie remembering that the itunes library is not actually on the ATV but also external disk connected to the laptop.
    Any advice would be great,
    Many thanks,
    Mike

Yes you can stream from the drive if it is attached to either your mini or laptop

Having drives attached to the mini won't affect the performance of the tv, as above you can stream from a drive attached to the mini/laptop
With regard to iphoto I think I would have that on the ATV snyc'd from my laptop.
Wouldn't be a problem, but remember you can only sync with one itunes library

There is no way to play VIDEO_TS folders over the tv, additionally any movies need to be in your itunes library.

I'm pretty sure reference movies won't work, but I'm not clear on how these would be an advantage, why not just put the movies into itunes.

  • Dual disk Mac mini server - disk issue Disk Utility can't repair

    ML Server.
There are two disks: Server OS HD and Server Mac HD. The Server OS HD only contains the OS and the Apple software update catalog. The Users folder is on the Server Mac HD. When the server is started / running, I go to the Disk utility > verify the Server Mac HD and I am told the Journal needs to be replayed but the volume is read only (it can't be!) and some other errors with regards to headers and bitmaps. DU then stops verifying the disk. I start the Mac mini / Server into recovery mode, try to verify the Server Mac HD. There are no problems - the "disk appears to be okay". I did this several times to same effect! How the heck do I repair the disk?

I see what you mean about live verification.
But didn't realize that the common sensical approach of separating the OS data from non-OS (user) data was an unusual config. Figured, it couldn't have any downside to it or atleast the least drawbacks.... had considered striping etc. but coulnd't see THAT much of a benefit in striping given my particular use / scenario. I have the system backed up to an external Time Machine drive (and will be doing an offsite / online backup of mostly user folders in the near future).
It would be interesting to see the results of fsck check though, like John said.
Anyway this whole thing was initiated because one of the users was getting an error of iTunes library being on a read only volume or on a locked volume. After repairing the Mac HD through Disk Utility in recovery mode (evethough no errors were found, I simply repaired it), that issue seemed to have resolved. So eventhough DU reported no errors, there must have been some small error - atleast it seems that way!
Thanks to both for the help!

  • Remote install OS X on Mac Mini (sans disk drive)

I wanted to sell my Mac Mini so I went through the process of deleting the harddrive using that command-r screen on load up. But I completely forgot about re-installing the operating system. So now I get the blinking folder icon when it boots.
How do I re-install OS X? Is there a way to remote install it? I can't seem to find any information online.
My Mac Mini  is a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5, 2GB RAM, 500 GB HD. It lacks the DVD drive so that option is not available.
    Thanks.

It is called "Internet Recovery", this might be of some help.

  • HT1338 cannot eject my mac mini the disk stuck

  • Mac SuperDrive Ejects Disk Before Importing The Full CD

Hey, I recently got a USB SuperDrive for my MacBook Pro, and while I was importing the final song in an album, it ejects it, cutting the song off midway. It also shows the import screen without any changes, if you could help as to how I can fix this, it'll be a great help, thanks

    No error messages at all.
There are 10 chapters, none with special characters. I should add that I burned a copy last week without any problems at all... since then, the only thing I did to the project was split up a chapter (it was too long for my liking), and added closing credits. I then added a slideshow to the project because there was lots of room left on the DVD (from the first burn). I still won't fill the DVD so size (movie length) is not an issue.
I found a similar thread (ok, identical problem as me) read through all four pages and am troubleshooting from suggestions on that thread... (currently, am creating a disk image of the project.... should be done in 1 hr, 27 minutes). I'll check that with the Apple DVD player and then try to burn the image with disk utility.
Thanks for the response... still looking for an answer though.

  • Return key not recognized on Mac mini during disk repair

Our Mac mii needs to run a disk repair so we restart and hold cmd & r, then it gives options but using keyboard it doesn't recognize double tap or return key so we can't select disk repair - so in limbo - can anyone save us? Please???

Boot off your *original* Install Disk , then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.

  • Mac mini ejecting every CD/DVD in insert

I have a Superdrive, and it won't take any disc I inisert, CD or DVD. After trying to read it, it ejects it, no matter what application I have opne (iTunes, DVD plaer, iDVD, etc). Even with no apps. open, the discs just ejects. I was buring some iDVDs no problem, then all of a suddden this started happeneing.
Anyone have a clue what is going on?

Well, I went to an Apple retail store this morning, and waited forver for a "genius" to help me. Most of the people in front of me ahd silly iPod issue...one lady was waiting there 'cuz her iPod didnt' boot..I told her (in line) "press & hold menu and play buttons"...it worked, she was psyched, didn't have to wait for a "genious".
Anyway, I knew my problem, laser burnt out, and all I wanted for them was to order me a new one. After 1 hour waiting, I decided the heck with it, and walked out. I decided to get a new Superdrive (8x) from otherworldcomputing.com, and install myself (I installed a 1 gig DIMM myself already).
Upside -> I wait 1 day, install it, and don't have to wait and driver 60 miles to the Apple store.
Downside -> I had to pay for the new Superdrive, and didn't take advantage of my 1-year warranty. There was just too long a line at the Apple store....some of the issues folks wanted help with...I got very fustrated.
    Anyway, just a rant...
