Mac Mini extremely slow - Superdrive not working

I have a 2006 Mac Mini that has the following issues:
-cannot keep a wireless connection w/Airport (PC's in the house do)
-will not recognize dvds/cds nor will it write them
-slows to snail pace when running more than 1 application at a time
My brother suggested using the installs discs to whipe the mac clean because it would get rid of any virus/worm that might be on there.
My question is: Will upgrading from Tiger to Leopard whipe everything anyway, in addition to losing every file on my mac? Also, if I do have a virus/worm then what is the best protection for Macs?
I'm almost ready to give up and go back to Windows. I'm so frustrated with my mac!

hpr3 gives some good advice to start with.
How much Memory do you have? How full is the Hard Drive?
It's not likely you have a Virus infection.
You could upgrade to Leopard without losing any files, but I don't think it'll cure the problem, especially difficult with no Superdrive!

The wireless connection to the printer is either extremely slow or not working at all on OS X Yosemite. It shows up in the list of printers in Bonjour in Safari, and I can connect to parts of the web interface if I wait a very long time. However, I cannot add the printer as a new printer in System Preferences even though the printer shows up.
I have upgraded to the latest firmware. The WiFi indicator on the printer is on, "green", and it has a reserved IP showing up in my router (ComCast). It seems that Windows machines can printer to the printer wirelessly without a problem.
Any help appreciated.

I would like to assist you today with installing your wireless HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color Multifunction Printer on your Mac OS X 10.10 Computer. Now you indicate in your post that this printer works fine with Windows computers, and you are able to 'see' the Bonjour printer on your Mac. Therefore, the issue that you are experiencing is not network related. Rather, I do believe that you are experiencing a driver conflict on your Mac OS X 10.10 computer. Can I please have you run the steps below to resolve this issue.
Step 1: Uninstall Drivers and Software:
First, I'm going to have you 'clean up' your Mac OS X 10.10 computer to verify that any trace of your Laserjet printer is gone so we have a nice clean slate to work with. Please click here and when the website opens select the drop down for 'Mac OS X v10.6, OS X v10.7, OS X v10.8, and OS X v10.9' as the steps are the same for Mac OS X 10.10. Run the appropriate uninstall steps for the method in which you originally tried to install your printer: Apple Updates, or the HP Driver download.
Once the uninstall is complete, please proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Verify and Repair your Disk Permissions on the Mac:
Open Macintosh HD and go to Applications
Go to the Utilities Folder
Open the Disk Utility
Select the Hard Drive volume you are using (usually on the left)
Select Verify Disk Permissions
Once that process is done, select Repair Disk Permissions
Step 3: Check for Apple Updates:
Go to Apple
Select System Preferences
Select Software Update
Click Update Now
Install your available updates
Restart your computer
Step 4: Reinstall your Software and Drivers:
Please click here to download the appropriate Mac OS X 10.10 drivers for your HP Laserjet printer.
Once the website opens select the 'download' button on the top left
Once the download has completed, please follow the onscreen steps to reinstall your printer.
Once the reinstall is complete, test the print and scan functions to ensure that your printer is functioning as per normal.

I do not have a solution, just the same complaint. ***! ! I just used the iTunes store 2 weeks ago and now, after reviewing everything they asked for including ID/Pass/ Account Info etc. I can't even get into the store. I have tried asking at the Mac store and it has all been to no avail. I was perfectly happy with iTunes before all of this ********... seriously what is the issue with iTunes? 07' Mac Mini 4GB Ram Upgrade Not Working.

I have a 2007 Mac Mini (Intel Core 2 Duo) which runs slow with 1GB ram. I purchased two 2GB sticks of ram and replaced the two stock ram sticks previously making 1GB ram - But my Mac Mini will not boot with 4GB ram in it. I tried taking one stick out, leaving one 2GB stick in with no luck, and so I have no other ideas. The memory for Macs has to be very precise, 5300/5400 is not acceptable as a rule. It must be straight 5300. If you can, return the memory modules and buy some guaranteed to work with your Mac. Go to OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com who guarantee their memory to work or your money back.

Mountain Lion Mac Mini Server Ethernet Port Not Working

I have a Mac Mini Server and once I upgraded to Mountain Lion Server the Ethernet port is unresponsive. It worked before upgrading. Is there something with Mountain Lion Server that is causing the Ethernet port not to work properly?

I have done the disk repair, permission repair, deleted many background processes but since the latest update to 10.10.1 anytime I open anything I get the rainbow wheel of death.
I have 4GB of memory as well.

Mac Mini (2011) audio & Bluetooth not working

I have a 2011 mac mini (intel) but the audio doesn't work in windows 7 64 bit when connected via the audio output at the back (not hdmi), also windows cannot find the bluetooth drivers either. I have installed bootcamp windows support version 4 and no luck so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated since my local istore isn't reliable.

Ah, no joy, as suspected...I'm using Boot Camp version 4 and all i got was a flash drive full of boot camp version 3.1 - 3.3? A few firmware upgrades that says it isn't compatible...

Mac Mini Extremely Slow out of the box

So I just got a brand new Mac Mini yesterday. It is the 4GB with the 1TB 5400 rpm HDD... It takes 15+ seconds to open system pref sometimes. Mail is empty and I can see 5-6 bounces before it opens.
My 2010 iMac dual core is faster than this, email opens instantly and I may have 3000+ emails.
I did a SMC reset, and I want to make sure I have a good grasp on this before I call it in to AppleCare. Is a 5400rpm HDD really this slow? Activity monitor shows nothing wrong, but then again there isn't anything installed on here. I don't have a problem if I need to upgrade the RAM but don't want to bandaid anything if I can fix it instead

It shouldn't be that slow, unless maybe Spotlight is Indexing, TimeMachine is doing a full backup or another Process is using alot of CPU.
Go to the Activity Monitor, select All Processes, click on the %CPU tab and check to see if you have a Process that has Failed or is using a high % of CPU.

If HP no longer supplies your specific recovery disk, you can usually find one from a 3rd party site, such as www.restoredisks.com for between $20 and $30.

Getting error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." on mac mini and imac but it works on old macbook pro

Please help! My hard drives work on all other computers except new imac and macmini.

Both the mac mini and imac do not have cd drives. The trouble is why should I repair the external HDs when they work fine on other computers? I'm running OS X 10.8.4. I feel like its an OS X problem but I cant say. I have tried unplugging the devices, restarting the computer, selectively unplugging and plugging in the devices, closing and opening the relevant applications (iTunes, iPhoto, etc). I have tried using different USB cables.
It's like all of a sudden the synching service stopped functioning or recognizing these devices for some reason. The other ports work just fine (monitor).
The only USB-connected external device that appears to be unaffected is the USB SuperDrive and it works on all the USB ports into which I plug it.
How do I fix this?

Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens or doesn't happen.

The Apple USB SuperDrive only works officially on Macs without a built-in SuperDrive (the MacBook Air, Mid 2011 and newer Mac minis, the Late 2012 iMac and the MacBook Pro with Retina display). As your iMac has got a built-in optical drive, it doesn't work by default, but as you said, that workaround makes the Apple USB SuperDrive work.
Anyway, if you have a Mac with a built-in SuperDrive and the SuperDrive gets damaged, I recommend you to buy a different external optical drive. The Apple external optical drive doesn't have a good reputation because it often fails and it's much expensive than other external optical drives

Switching Airplay on on Mac Mini works. It goes automatically on extended display mode. Switching to mirroring works for about 1 sec and then it switches back to extended display mode. On my tv screen i see my second desktop. Funny detail: it has the desktop background i used previously. Another funny detail: I had exactly the same problem when i used the previous versions of OS X and the Apple TV software...

Yes, and possibly the system that disc can install is not Intel compatible. It would have to be a late 2006 model, which was the start of the Intel series of Minis.
