Mac Mini extremely slow
I have done the disk repair, permission repair, deleted many background processes but since the latest update to 10.10.1 anytime I open anything I get the rainbow wheel of death.
I have 4GB of memory as well.

Mac Mini Extremely Slow out of the box
So I just got a brand new Mac Mini yesterday. It is the 4GB with the 1TB 5400 rpm HDD... It takes 15+ seconds to open system pref sometimes. Mail is empty and I can see 5-6 bounces before it opens.
My 2010 iMac dual core is faster than this, email opens instantly and I may have 3000+ emails.
I did a SMC reset, and I want to make sure I have a good grasp on this before I call it in to AppleCare. Is a 5400rpm HDD really this slow? Activity monitor shows nothing wrong, but then again there isn't anything installed on here. I don't have a problem if I need to upgrade the RAM but don't want to bandaid anything if I can fix it instead
Any suggestions before I call this in would be appreciated. It shouldn't be that slow, unless maybe Spotlight is Indexing, TimeMachine is doing a full backup or another Process is using alot of CPU.
Go to the Activity Monitor, select All Processes, click on the %CPU tab and check to see if you have a Process that has Failed or is using a high % of CPU. -
Mac Mini extremely slow - Superdrive not working
I have a 2006 Mac Mini that has the following issues:
-cannot keep a wireless connection w/Airport (PC's in the house do)
-will not recognize dvds/cds nor will it write them
-slows to snail pace when running more than 1 application at a time
My brother suggested using the installs discs to whipe the mac clean because it would get rid of any virus/worm that might be on there.
My question is: Will upgrading from Tiger to Leopard whipe everything anyway, in addition to losing every file on my mac? Also, if I do have a virus/worm then what is the best protection for Macs?
I'm almost ready to give up and go back to Windows. I'm so frustrated with my mac!Hi airheadial, and a warm welcome to the forums!
hpr3 gives some good advice to start with.
How much Memory do you have? How full is the Hard Drive?
It's not likely you have a Virus infection.
You could upgrade to Leopard without losing any files, but I don't think it'll cure the problem, especially difficult with no Superdrive! -
Hi all,
I have an old Mac mini that's from around 2008 and runs on Snow Leopard. I also have a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display that's running Mountain Lion. Both running iTunes 10.6.3.
I never noticed anything wrong with my MBP's connection speed until last night when I downloaded a free TV episode from iTunes. The download speed varied between 20KB/s and 40KB/s and it took me 7 to 8 hours to download a single episode. I checked my internet connection but there was nothing wrong with it, SpeedTest.net told me I had a download speed of 94MB/s and upload speed of 80MB/s, it was only iTunes that was unbearably slow.
Today I was browsing iTunes again and was planning to buy some movies, but again it took forever for the trailers to download. So I fired up my Mac mini just to see if it would be just as slow. Turned out my Mac mini could download the same trailers from iTunes at a much higher speed than my MBP (around 3MB/s on the ones I tested).
So what gives? They are on the same Wifi network provided by an Airport Extreme, and although my iPhone and iPad are also connected to it, no one else is doing any heavy duty downloading.
Thanks in advance!

10. Exit System Preferences
11. Try out your MBP and report what happened.

Mac Mini running slow after Mavericks
Hi All
I have a Mac Mini which I upgraded to Mavericks and now it intermittently runs extremely slow - almost at a standstill. I have tried a number of things, such as a complete OSX re-install; I've used MacKeeper to tidy up my junk; I have installed Time Machine Scheduler to stop constant back-ups; I have tested the machine when the Iomega Time Machine drive is unconnected and my 2TB external archive drive is unattached too; I have removed Flashplayer programmes, Silver light etc etc. But nothing is helping (I have not tried uninstalling Microsoft Office, yet!).
I is a busy working machine and I am now having to resort to using my Mac Air because things are so bad.
Weirdly, my wife's identical Mac Mini (with Mavericks) has none of these problems.
Here is my report from EtreCheck.... PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP AS I GOING CRAZY!!!
Thanks
Keith

That's your first two mistakes. Get rid of MacKeeper. It is of no benefit, and is arguably detrimental.
Secondly, Time Machine backups only backup what has changed in the last hour. They should not be "constant", but even if they are, the speed at which the backup is made is irrelevant.
Get rid of the Kromtech thing, whatever that is, too.
Two things to test:
1. Does it work in Safeboot Mode? If so, then it's likely some third-party software that you normally have running.
2. Does it work in a brand new user account? If so, then your problem is a corrupt preference or cache in your old user account, or some user-triggered process. Go back to the old account and start refining your hunt. Remove a bunch of preference files and test; empty user caches with a utility like Onyx; turn off Login Items, etc. -
Mac Mini 2011 slow down after updating to Yosemite
Hi all!
After updating my Mac Mini (half 2011) from Mavericks to Yosemite, it became extremely slow and unresponsive. I have to wait a lot of time for apps to open and commands, like clicking a button, to be executed executed. File Vault, that I read is a common cause of slow down, is NOT enabled.
What should I do? In these cases, for my Windows PC, I insert the OS DVD and format: what's the equivalent operation for a Mac?
Thank you in advance for your help!K1kk0z90 wrote:

Intel Mac Mini runs slow with more than one app running.
Hello, I just bought a new 1.66 Mac Mini. It's stock. When I don't have any applications open and I go to open one like a web browser or iTunes, they open very fast. If I have say iTunes or a browser open and I go to open another app, it opens very slow. I have counted up to 12 bounces of the icon before an app will open but the same app will open in one or two bounces of the icon if nothing else is open. Is this caused by only having 512Mb of RAM?
I have never tried the Sims 2 (PC version) on a PC with integrated graphics, but I got good performance on a Dell laptop (512 MB RAM, Intel Pentium M 1.4 Ghz, nVidia GeForce Go5200 FX / 64 MB VRAM). I don't know how much impact the integrated graphics could have on its performance. Upgrading to 1 GB, however, should ensure that you get decent performance and even if you don't need that Gig it will make your computer faster.
When using Windows under Boot Camp, your Mac will perform like any PC with the same hardware ...

Hi,
My Mac Mini has been booting up super slow, and taking forever to shut down. It also hangs frequently. I have disconnected external hard drives from the computer, and that didn't help. I ran etrecheck, and the results are below. Anything obvious in there that will fix my problem? I also ran a Fix Permissions, and Fix Hard Drive, with no real issues found. Thanks for you help!

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -

Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Does anyone have any feedback on if there is anything that can be done to improve performance?
Thanks in advanceYou are only running on 2GB of RAM. I would suggest 4GB as a minimum, and if possible, maxing out the Mini. LogMeIn and TeamViewer have been culprits for some users in Mavericks, also.

Mac mini running slow, will disk utility in machine be effective
Mac mini came installed with 10.4 when purchase long time ago. Looks like the dvd reader no longer works since any cd or dvd gets ejected. The mini has been running slow and I cannot restart with Mac Install DVD to run the Disk Utility since it gets ejected. Will the Disk Utility that is found in machines Utilities be just as good for repairing compared to the Install DVD? Current OS is 10.6.8.
Try it. Some disk repair requires booting from other than the disk being repaired.

Mac mini was slow, better
My mac mini had started running slow. I tried repairing permissions, reinstalling software from scratch to no avail.
So I reset the mini by unplugging the power cord, holding the power button down then pressing again.
Immediately a puff of dust spewed out of the mini and the fan came on full speed.
I have never heard the fan on before ever.
Now it won't go off but it seems a bit more responsive.
Should the fan have been on all along for light task such as web surfing. The fan should run all the time the system is powered, but typically slowly enough that you can barely hear it. When CPU load is high and the temperature inside the unit begins to rise, the fan should then spin up until it reaches a speed where it is very noticeable. It should generally NOT run at full speed when web browsing, though if there is flash content or heavy graphics embedded in a page, you may hear the fan spin up for what ought to be fairly brief intervals.
You don't say which model of mini you have, but the reset procedure you appear to be describing sounds like the PMU reset for the G4 mini. If so, it doesn't work on Intel models.
If it's a G4, follow these instructions:
- Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
- Let go of the power button.
- Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
If it's an Intel model, follow these:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
-Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
After you do whichever is the appropriate reset the system is still misbehaving, and noting that you've done what sounds like a full reinstall of MacOS, let us know if you did an erase and install or an archive and install, and also whether the fan runs at full speed all the time (very loud, from power-on) and whether you have had the system open at any point. -
Mac Mini very slow at 4 gig memory, upgrade to 16 still slows down but takes a longer time
I bought a Mac mini a year ago. With an i7 and i terabyte and it cam with only 4 gig of ram. It worked fine for a while and i installed some apps then it started to get very slow. seeing the colorful "hourglass " turn round and round quite a few times. Then i went to the activity monitor where it told me that the memory used was about 3.89 gigs. I purchased a memory cleaner app from thr app store which helped a bit.
Today i upgraded to 16 gig memory and bang my computer ripped. The activity manager said i was using 6 gigs of ram and had 9.8 remaining.
after being on the internet for a couple of hours and using Firefox with about ten tabs open the computer started to get very slow again.
I checked the activity manager and it read 6 gigs used and the cash read a whopping 9 gigs. Did not think i would need the memory cleaner any more but after doing a clean it worked better.
Why did i get a whopping 9 gigs in the cash ? which is what it read after my computer slowed down again. You may want to post in the Mac Mini forum, this is the iMac forum. If you would like me to I will ask the moderator to move the thread.

Mac Mini extremely unresponsive, pinwheel of death all the time, fails reboot.
I got my mac mini 2011 the MC816LL/A model in February and don't give it much usage so I was surprised when it started behaving erratically and and giving me the pinwheel of death all the time, the issues started all of a sudden a couple of months ago. Even when I force reset the computer fails and then i have to turn it off completely and wait more than 15 mins to be able to use it again, totally ridiculous... I've read all the threads about the issue and they mention OSX lion being sluggish and also to reset PRAM as last resort after I've tried everything under the sun(uninstalling buggy software, repairing disk permissions, general maintenance... etc) I know there has to be something wrong on the software side because I still own an old PowerBook g4 that i got back in 04' and it has never given me any issues so I'm extremely fed up with this issue since this computer is supposed to be better. Any suggestions??
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.
