Mac Mini - Eye tv - Xbmc Audio problem

Hi
I recently bought a Mac Mini early 2009 with the intension of using this
as a mediacenter.
I have installed Lion on this and is now set up to run Eye tv, xbmc and
remotebuddy at startup.
My problem is that when i boot the audio works great on everything. If
i then run a video on xbmc (where the sound also works great) and stops
it, then all audio is gone. Both from the xbmc menu and on eye tv, and
evetything else. What i can do is start a new movie from xbmc where the
music again works great. But then sound on every other things still doesn't
work.
I have audio setup as a Toslink cable from the mac mini to my reciever.
It is almost like xbmc "lock" then audio to playing movies. I have made sure
that everything is unmuted. The only way to get sound is again to reboot
and then its off again when playing a movie.
Can anybody help me??? I have tried to search for an answer to this but
was to my surprise not able to find this.

I have many of the same issues as described.  I think this has to do with Dolby Digital output versus PCM output.  Normally the Mac Mini running EyeTV, the digital or analog output worked fine.  No impact.  The digital output was always PCM stereo.  Never all of the channels that were being recorded.  THEN, I installed XBMC.  Which is wonderful.  And the cool side effect was that all of a sudden, I had Dolby Digital streaming from the digital output to my receiver.  Sound is the best I've ever had from the Mac Mini for movies.  And the other side effect was that running EyeTV also now supports DD output.  Yeh!
But there is a downside.  Once DD is available, there is no analog output (if source is DD) and I cannot get PCM output when running an EyeTV recorded show using either piece of software.  I do get PCM when streaming content off of a browser though.
The lack of controls are the big problem to making a perfect audio system.

I am considering purchasing the Mac mini for home studio audio production using Adobe Audition and a USB microphone.  Will the base mini model run these programs?

The base mini has 4GB and a 5400 RPM hard drive. It is slow to start up and slow to launch large application such as Word (and I'd assume Adobe Audition) due to the slow drive. I've not used a new 4GB model, just the 8GB model, and the 8GB model (except for the slow drive) handles everything I've thrown at it, including running Photoshop, Word, Safari, and Mail at the same time but there is sometimes a delay switching between programs as the swapfile is updated. Overall I was not happy with the 5400 RPM drive (perhaps because I have MBA and iMac with Fusion drive) so I eventually upgraded it with an SSD. Now the mini is truly a warrior.

  • Mac mini mid 2011 toslink audio

i bought a cambridge audio stereo amplifier ... plus a dac (beresforn bushmaster) .... i got my mac mini wired hdmi to my plasma ... no problem with that, sound and vision to the tv ... got that
now i wanted to use the toslink mini output to my new dac and the dac connected to my stereo amplifier ... it doesnt work ... and i cant get it right
i put the cable toslink mini sided into my mac mini ... it does apear a red beam ... the cable works, i tried it with other hardware ... i conect the other side to the dac ... nothing ... but the dac works fine ... the toslink conection from my tv works fine ... i get no audio from the mac mini through toslink output
yes, watching tv or mac mini on my plasma including sound from the stereo amplifier works fine ... as long as the plasma is on ...but i want to use the mac mini as a sort of "cd player" without having to switch on the plasma ... i thought mac mini hooked to my stereo/dac via toslink would work just fine without having to switch on the tv ... remote app lets go ...
but i cant get it ... can someone give me prove that toslink is unable to send a adiosignal aslong as hdmi is the main vieo/audio output ... therefore i must take the hdmi cable out of my mac mini? is that it? ....THAT CANT BE IT!!!!!!!!!
please i need to know how to make this work ...thx

Is it possible that the cable is not plugged in completely?
I know on my desktop setup, when I plug in my powered
speakers it feels like it engaged, when in fact it needs to
    be pushed in further.
The reason I bring this up is that anything plugged into
the line out port overrides all other audio interfaces regardless
of what they are.   It is the way this port works on Minis as
well as iMacs.  It follows the old headphone port paradigm.

  • Mac mini doesn't recognise audio CD's when trying to download

I'm trying to download a new audio CD I have bought to my Itunes library through Mac mini-however it doesn't recognise the CD and just spits it out. It has previously imported CD's. I have tried several different CD's to check CD not faulty but no difference-can anyone help?

Your optical drive is probably bad.  You can try restarting the computer, or try blowing out dust or fuzz that may be blocking the laser in the drive, but it isn't at all unusual for optical drives to simply stop working after several years.  You don't say which model Mini you have.  Post this issue with the exact model number on the appropriate Mini forum and people can give advice on options.  if you are technically inclined you may be able to replace the drive yourself, or you may simply decide to purchase an external optical drive (which may be cheaper if the alternativeis taking the computer to an Apple Store, unless still under warranty).

  • Mac mini+hp w2216 monitor (DVI)= problems!

The strangest thing happened when I moved my Mac mini (G4, 1.42 GHz) from an Apple Cinema Display (no problems) to a new HP w2216 (1680x1050 wide screen monitor). I connected with a DVI cable. At first, it worked. But after a while, artifacts started to develop, especially when moving windows around, until finally the monitor would not pick a signal. Brought monitor back to the store, where it worked flawlessly when connected to a PC using the same DVI cable. Monitor works fine with analog VGA cable!
Artifacts looked similar to those shown here: http://www.freewebs.com/themagius/minidvipics.htm, so it seems this is some incompatibility between the graphics card of the mini and the HP display. Any other idea how to fix this?

The old G4 mini has trouble with monitors that have something called a non-coherent TMDS (DVI) receiver. The solution is to use SwitchRes X and build a custom resolution using the CVT-RB setting under the "Use simplified settings" option in the custom timing set up window. This causes the pixel clock to lower to a value where the coherency/non-coherency matter is not an issue. Here are more specific instructions for using SwitchRes X once you have downloaded and installed it. By the way, download and install the lighter version of the program instead of the full version. The lighter version is called SwitchRes X Control Panel.
Open SwitchRes X and click on the Custom tab. Click the "+" to start a new timing. A window will open with a checkbox near the lower left that says, "Use simplified settings". Check the box and then, in the associated pop-up, select "CVT-RB". RB stands for reduced blanking and it will cause the pixel clock to lower. Enter "1680" for Horizontal Active, "1050" for Vertical Active and "60" for Vertcal Scan rate. Those are the only three boxes you can fill in. The built-in calculator fills in the remaining values. Then follow the directions for saving and restarting. Now in Displays Preferences should be two 1680 x 1050 timings. One is the standard one and one is the custom one you just built. You may not be able to tell which is which so you'll have to try both. One of them should be stable.

  • Mac mini and Snow leopard wireless problems

    Hi,
I got mac mini running snow leopard to our office from another branch, this is recently brought mac mini with snow leopard installed,
But the problem is I cannot connect to internet using wireless connections. Reading other posts i found out that there is a snow leopard issues with connecting to wireless network, but this problem seems to unique. When i connect to wireless network it shows me that, mac mini is connected to wireless network but doesn't take ip address from dhcp , its show some self assigned ip which is 169.254.226.163, but my network address are 192.168.1.*, ethernet works fines, but in wireless even when i gave manual ip , it connect but i cannot connect to internet neither i can ping to router.
I tried various methods suggests in forms, like deleting network preference files in /Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Preferences and also deleting network connection and adding new one, even updating to 10.6.3 but nothing works for me,
My macbook nicely connected to wireless and get ip, even PC connect nicely this issue is only with Mac mini
Could have suggest me how can i fixed this, Thank you very much,
    Best Regards,

Thanks DaddyPaycheck for your initial response. Before I jump onto the phone with Comcast couple of questions that I have for clarification purposes:
    1) Are you implying that I must link my blabla.com address to that static IP address through my Domain Provider? See following example:
Record Type Record Host Record Answer TTL
    A *.blablat.com >>Static IP<< 300
    2) The current IP I have been given 60.172.151.254, why is that not static or how do you know it is not static?
    3) When executing the command host in terminal for this IP address it returns the following: c-60-172-151-254.hsdl.co.comcast.net which coincidentally is the same as primary DNS it recommended during the initial configuration of the Mini Server. What does this mean? When I enter this in Safari it results in 'Safari can't connect to server'.
    4) Executing the same command for my domain name 'blabla.com' it results in my 'internal' IP address '1.0.10.9'.
Thanks in advance for any clarification you can provide,
    Tiest.

  • Does Thunder bolt port in mac mini support video and audio

Please let me know thunderbolt or mini display port in mac mini does support voice and video. If I connect this Thunderbolt port to a TV using the mini display port to HDMI cable, will I get both audio and video in TV.

It depends on the model of Mac mini. If you have the new shape Mac mini - the one with the black circular plastic disk on the bottom, then yes. It can support sending audio and video to a suitable Displayport or Mini Displayport monitor, and it can also support sending audio and video together via HDMI using the built-in HDMI port.
Older Mac minis do not support this even with a Mini Displayport to HDMI adaptor. The nearest you can get is an adaptor like the KanexLive iAdapt 51 which takes the audio from the speaker out and the video from the Mini Displayport and then combines them to send over HDMI.

I'll do... but it sounds strange to me... this LaCie is brand new (I've bought it a month ago) and it seems to be a good brand for drives, especially for Mac OS X, isn't it?
All this problems started after a Mavericks fresh install...
I hope to solve this problem quickly.

  • Mac Mini (Mid 2010) Optical Audio Annoyance / Issue

    Hi,
I just purchased a new Mac Mini a few days ago and got it up and running with HDMI to my TV and optical audio to my AVR. I have bitstream passthrough working in DVD player and VLC / Quicktime with Perian installed. Happy camper on that end.
My issue lies that I am unable to change my speaker configuration from 2ch stereo in Audio MIDI Setup. This means that I can not use my 7.1 AVR to monitor 8 channels of audio out of the pro apps I'm trying to use! (Final Cut/Soundtrack)
I even wen as far as to take the HDMI out of the mix thinking that it was affecting the amount of audio channels available to me and switched to using a MDP->DVI adaptor with a DVI->HDMI cable so that audio is not passed. No dice.
Is there some kind of magic mojo that is needed to get Audio MIDI Setup to allow me to select more than 2 channels when using an optical connection? I really would like to use my pro apps and monitor my mixes as well as watch
Look forward to hearing from the Apple guru's here! Thanks.

As far as I'm aware any form of DD or DTS whether it be 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or indeed 7.2 is discrete by nature.
They contain discrete sound channels, but all are contained within one bitstream. They are encapsulated, if you will.
To my understanding, multi-channel PCM is not encapsulated in the same manner.

Yes DisplayPort can provide audio. But you have to either be using an displayport-to-displayport connection, or using an appropriate adapter.
But a typical MDP to DVI adapter is not going to pass audio.

This is correct insofar as the fact that the DVI spec does not include audio. And as you said, a typical MDP adapter does not pass audio.
But just so you know, the DVI interface can actually carry audio, if it is present. When I had my 2010 Mini's HDMI port connected to my DVI Detective (via HDMI-DVI adapter) and then the DVI detective was connected to my HDMI reciever (via DVI-HDMI cable), I was receiving the HDMI audio stream at the receiver.

  • Mac Mini Singel Core Sound Output problem

Mac Mini is connected to a amplifier, the sound-output is put on 100% this works perfect, but after shutdown the soound-output is set to 50% is it possible to set this always on 100 % ?
    thanks

Is the mini connected via the standard analog 1/8" audio jack or via a digital cable?
You could try resetting PRAM from this Apple doco:
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

  • Troubleshoot mac mini unresponsive after sleep --- bluetooth problems?

    Hi,
my in-laws' mac mini has a hard time getting back from sleep sometimes, and this morning we lost some mission critical work because of this. The only peripherials it uses are a wireless keyboard (Hungarian layout bought in Hungary) and a magic trackpad (bought in the US alongside the mini). We tried restarting the mini and both wireless pieces multiple times, this did not help. The mini had Lion, and I presume it automatically got the 10.7.1 update last week (but I cannot check whether that happened overnight last night).
Is there anything else my family can do apart from trying to press some keys some times, press the power button of the wireless things, and press the power button of the mini briefly (to activate) or long (to power down and then restart)?
Did we lose bluetooth or the display?
Did Apple do anything about similar previous concerns?
    Thanks.

An update: this problem is observationally equivalent to having lost the display. I already had problems connecting a VGA display through the mini's HDMI port, but now the Thunderbolt might have lost the display too. I see that others are having similar problems, probably linked to 10.7.1. We'll see if the PRAM's reset helps.
    "It just works"?
    Well done, Apple.

  • Mac mini, Safari and HP printing problems

Just got a Mac Mini in March. I don't know if this is a Mac problem, an HP problem, or a browser problem.
I simply cannot seem to get it to print web pages in any usable way from Safari. I even downloaded Mozilla Firefox, and it isn't really any much different. For example, I used to be able to log on to my bank and print off the current transactions page, either the whole thing or highlight and print a selected number of pages. My old HP2110xi printer worked GREAT with our PC.
Now, with Safari, it prints only the visible frame, cuts off mid way, or spits out page after page of blank paper. I tried highlighting the page, copying it and either pasting it into a Word document (doesn't work too well because it totally destroys the format) to print or saving it as PDF. It still won't give me the entire printout of the whole document, and acts like it doesn't even see it ( just spits out blank pages)
I downloaded the updated software from the HP site, and since this seems only to be a problem with printing from the internet, I know it has to be related to the way Apple based browsers work with it. One hint I have is that the whole format for the Print commands is totally different, and requires that I reset the print quality, etc., each and every time I print a document.
    Any suggestions?

Is there a check box option for something like "Fit to page"? I once had a similar problem (not with an HP printer) and unchecking that box did the trick. Don't know why.

  • Mac Mini As Server.  Heat Problems?

I went to my local Apple store with the intention of getting a Mac Mini to use as a (very) low traffic file server. I am intending to leave the server on 24/7. The rep told me that I should not use the mini as a server because it would overheat.
I did some googling, and found many people saying how they have set up their Mac Minis as servers without problems. There are some similar posts to that effect on this site.
Do you think it is ok to use the Mac Mini as a server, and if so, are there any steps I should take to prevent any problems. (Other than obviously leaving the vents clear).
Are there any other good options for a low cost server?
    iMac G5 (iSight) 20" Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I suggest someone may have been trying to upsell you to something a little more expensive..
I doubt Apple would design anything that would "overheat" in use. Keep the vents clear, away from heat and light sources and enjoy OSX's very strong serving capabilities.
Bear in mind the processor is not the fastest around and that the harddrive is a 2.5inch drive designed for portable/not continuous operation. So the bearings may not last as long as a full size 3.5inch or server designed drive. As ever backup is even more important!
    Hope this helps.
