Mac Mini fan and overheating.

Lately I've noticed that the fan on my Mac Mini is running all the time. What should be the cycle run up and down time of the fans? It' s an Intel 1.66 Mac Mini, the only thing that I did to it recently is upgrade the RAM from 1 GB to 2 GB. Does the fans on the Core Duo MAC MINI's run all the time? When I first got it I don't remember it being on all the time. And does the Mac Mini have a Temp sensor? I downloaded a widget to show me the internal temp but the widget said it can't find a sensor.

yes the fan does run constantly, but it should be nearly inaudible. that is to say it shouldn't be going full blast all the time. There is a sensor and one of the common reasons for a fan running full blast 24/7 is this sensor becomes disconnected when intalling ram and left unhooked. I'd check that out first. did you upgrade the ram yourself? if you did, open the mini back up and check your connections, if not, bring it to wherever you got the ram installed and tell them to fix it.

  • Mac Mini fan increase speed and noise

    Hi all.
Quick question. This has been bugging me for a while so decided to get some expert help from you guys.
Lately my new mac mini fan has been operating at full speed sometimes when the computer wakes from sleep and also while restarting or when holding down command and R for the recovery partition. The computer I must say is not suffering any performance issuses or is not under any hard loads.
This is getting very annoying! I have reset the SMC as per apples instructions and it has got better. I am wondering if my external firewire drive is causing problems.
I will explain my hardware set up.
One UPS which is plugged in and the mini runs off that. USB cable from the UPS is attached to the back of the mini. I have one thunderbolt display, one printer on USB, one EYETV USB dongle, Bose speakers plugged into the USB as well.
The firewire drive goes to sleep after 30 mins have elapsed. I guess if I am not using it, eject it and leave the cable from the back of the drive unplugged until I need it again? trying to unplug it from the mini is a chore as the desk space is small.
    Any thoughts would be great.
    Thanks.

  • HELP- mac mini fan just sped up to 5500 RPM

mac mini fan just sped up to 5500 RPM
temps are normal though, no overload to system.

The first thing I would try is to perform an SMC reset on the system:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, +making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.+
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If the fan continues to run at full speed after that, does it do so right from power on, or on;y after the system has been running a few minutes?

  • Mac mini fan starts every 20 secs

After reviewing posts with similar issues, I tried:
    - Rresetting PRAM
    - Resetting the SMC
    - Since I wanted to do a clean install for a while, I did a Snow Leopard clean install.
After all of this, the mac mini fan starts and inmediatley goes quiet.  It repeats this over an over every 20 seconds.
What else can I try? My Mac mini is from 2007 (2 GHz, Intel Core Duo 2)

Since you've done a clean install (and updated to current/latest release?), and the AHT didn't find any obvious issues, and an SMC reset didn't help, let's look at more causal sources.
Have you looked at the vents on the bottom to ensure they are free of lint/dust/animal hair/etc? Plugged intake vents can cause high temperatures and the fan behavior you're hearing.
Have you looked at the Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) to see is any program is using much of the processor, which would drive heat in the system?
Do you have iStat Pro so you can see what the temps are on various components?

I have a 2010 mac mini referbished and i dont see the Disk Utilitiy in the Utilities on the install disk. Is that because it is refurbished?

The software that comes with your refurbished Mini should be identical to that which comes with a new Mini. Disk Utility should be in Applications > Utilities. Alternatively, choosing Utilities from the Go menu at the top of the finder windownwill take you directly to the Utilities folder.

Can i connect my iMac to a mac mini (wirelessly) and control the mac mini display on my TV?

Look up "screen sharing" in help
You can control your mini (which I am assuming you are hooking to your TV) complete from your iMac.
After you set up screen sharing, you can go to the finder, under the "go" menu choose "Connect to server" and then browse.  Choose your mac mini's name, and look for the "Screen Sharing" button.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
    All users:
Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
    Only these users:
Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.Click Add at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Users & Groups preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list, and then click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen:
Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password:
Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen. It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • Mac Mini Stolen and need to wipe data

    Hi.
Our office had a Mac Mini stolen and we need to wipe the data from it. Problem is, all our Macs have been upgraded to Yosemite apart form teh one stolen and can't see it on the list within iCloud.
Is there another way we can wipe the data from iCloud on that Mac Mini?

    If you can't erase by:
    iCloud: Erase your device
Then you would first have to physically find the Mac in order to erase. it.

  • MAC MINI BLOCKED AND PASS OUT THE OPENING SESSION SCREEN

Hi, i hope someone can help me.
(i'm a french user, so i'll try to write a good english)
I've a mac MINI (2006) Intel Core Solo
    Mac OSX 10.4.11 Tiger
I've no problem since some days.
    I'm not the usual user.
    Is the problem description :
    • I start my Mac mini by pressing the button.
    • "dong"
    • I see the apple on the screen with spiral progression, all right.
    • after around 15 sec. normally, at this moment, the opening session screen must appear… (there are 2 users, one administrator [with password] and one guest without password) but it don't.
    • After a brief flash between two different screens (blue-gray),
the gray screen with the apple and the spiral progression re-appear but BLOCKED.
    • There are some pixels lost in disorder at the top-left of the screen (the place of the starting mouse-arrow).
    • After some minutes, or when i click away (i really don't now exactly when…)
The session of the guest starting normally (with some slownesses)
    • I've a AirPort connexion with an iMac (Leopard 10.5.5).
    • I've noted that someday, my usual network connexion have been changed (on the mac mini only), and my Mini tryed to connect with the connection of a neighbor.
As if this connexion have been selected by default.
•• I've tryed to restart, close the session etc.
•• I've lunched the disc utility to verify the HD…
•• And finally, I've passed out the problem with changing the account parameters :
Open the session automaticaly as a guest. Passed out but not resolved !!
••• THE PROBLEM STILL HERE, but for a few seconds only
    (blocking lasts only two seconds).
So, can someone help me ?
What type of problem can it be ?
I hope someone has allready resolved it !
    Thanks for reading.

Hi you, i love your post…
    So, i suggest you :
    - In the account parameters (in préf. sys.)
    - Delete the guest account created.
    - Specify start automatically as "your Admin. name"
    - Restart your computer.
    - Go one more time in the Account param. pane
    - Create a new guest account and modify some settings (such as display of the file for users in opening session screen etc.)
    - Specify automatic start with guest
    - Restart you Mac Mini.
Of course you have note that i've solved (for the moment only ?) the problem.
But i must say it for others, if someone has the same pb.
When my Mac Mini was Blocked, in fact, the computer seems all right but the display not. As the opening session screen was behind this static grey-apple-screen.
In addition, i've forgotten that there is an other screen with
"Démarrage de Mac OS X en cours…"
So, when i've unplugged my screen during the blocked screen,
and re-plugged it, all returns right : i can see my opening session screen…
So, if some one can tell me what is the problem exactly…
    I'm curious.
So, at this moment, i've started my Mini once time only.
I hope all stay right in future…
Thanks so munch to me for my response.
    :]

  • I can't remember my mac mini password and can only log in under test, please help

I can't remeber my Mac mini password and can only log in under Test.  Please help me as I would like to access my photos and personal information.  Thanks

    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

  • Download iOS 8 once to Mac Mini Server and upgrade all iOS devices in the network

Is it possible to download iOS8 only once to the Mac Mini Server and use it to upgrade all eligible iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) in the same LAN?
I tried the following methods and they are just not working:
    1. Connect an iPads Mini with Retina Display to the iTunes on Mac.  I chose Download Only. Once downloaded the iPad Software Upgrade, I upgraded the connected iPad to iOS8.  Then I connect another iPad (used to be on another Mac) to the same iTunes.  I had to download iOS 8 again.  It's not using the same downloaded iOS 8 file. (I did the same thing for an iPhone.  Same result.)
    2. I turned on the Caching Service (not Software Upgrade Service, i.e. for Mac Software) on the Mac Mini Server from the Server app.  I then repeat step 1 above and got the same result.  It seems that the Caching Service does not cache the iOS 8  Software Upgrade like what it does for other apps.  (I think I may need to use some Apple Scripts but I have no such experience.)

Yes, it should work that way.  However, I was told by an Apple Support that there was a problem and thus Server 3.2.1 was unable to do so.
I paid for Server 4 and it better provides the expected Caching Services for both iOS Software and Mac Software through the iOS and Mac App Stores.

  • How can I bandle Mac-mini Ipad and Iphone all with the same usser name and password

I alway's have problem with my ID AND PASSWORD  also I want to bandle my mac-mini Ipad and Iphone with the same password and usser name how do I do tyhis?

    Hola amigo
If you wish to use the same Apple ID for all your Apple devices then you need to set them up that way from the start. If you did not use the same Apple ID for them all then you would need to erase the iOS devices by returning them to the factory settings and starting over as if they were new.
However, content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to download or update your content bought with one Apple ID with a different Apple ID. So you would need to decide if your are abandoning extra Apple IDs that you may have created and the content that you acquired with that Apple ID.

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?
