Mac Mini Fan on all the time almost...

I'm noticing that my Mini fan is on almost all the time now, not when the computer is at rest, but pretty much when I do any copying of files or run multiple programs. Could that be a sign of something wrong? Maybe I have bad RAM. Gets pretty loud...

Standard reasons for a loud fan in your situation would be:
1) Mini sitting on or near other heat producing equipment;
2) Mini not getting free access to room temperature air;
3) Mini's vents clogged by dust or animal hair -- gentle vacuuming can help here. I don't recommend compressed "air".
It's hard to see how "bad RAM" would figure into this problem.
Keep in mind that the Mini's fan is always running when the computer is on; but normally it spins slowly enough that you don't hear it.

  • 2010 Mac Mini Beach Balls all the time! Help!

Our Mac mini has always been this way since new on and off. It has the DVD drive and c2d. I have upgraded it trying to resolve the issue but it is still there. It now has 8gb of ram, 128gb SSD m4. Though it is two versions of the OS behind and considering upgrading it to mountain lion too see if that helps. The OS has been installed fresh multiple times. It is okay after a fresh reboot, but after the day is up is starts to slow. If you go more than one day or so it is really slow. We have to restart it every day
I am sick of the issues it has given us. Any one have any other ideas on how to solve this? Would the OS upgrade be worth it?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Take these steps when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

i recently upgraded to Lion and i find that my computer is running slow and applications are crashing.  For example I have Word 2011 for Mac and it crashes all the time I end up losing my work.  It often happens when I'm in class using notebook and when I press record my computer starts thinking and it freezes.
Also, I feel that it overheats often and my battery runs out pretty quickly.  I had the macbook (black) and this never happened before.  I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something with my computer.I bought my computer summer 2010, I don't think this should be happening. Please Help......

This is exactly what keeps happening to mine too.  I was at a conference taking notes, and I was
using the Notebook template, and doing some audio recording simultaneously.  About 3 hours into the conference (not consistently recording, but on and off with the sessions) my file wouldn't save anymore, saying something like "File cannot be modified while in use with another program" and "Invalid file name" when I would go back into my folder to look for it). I tried installing some updates from Microsoft, and when I restarted, I was at least able to open my old notes again, and so far it looks like the audio was working.  However, today at the conference, the same thing happened again, but I wasn't actively recording any audio (though after I had copy and pasted my second file of notes into the original, I went back to using it after re-naming it).
Does the crash happen to you under similar cirucumstances?  The update might help a little, but it is definitely not the solution.  Does anyone have any solutions?  Lion shouldn't be this buggy... I moved to Mac to get away from the garbage of bugs and compatibility issues...

  • MBP Fans on all the time

    Can anyone help with this.
My MBP 15" fans run all the time they dont ever stop, I taken this to an apple repair centre and the first time they replaced the top (keyboard) casing, that didnt work. I returned it again and they replaced the logic board and this hasnt worked either, Im sat here typing with the fans going mental (as am I). If I take this back again what will they choose to replace this time. If there is an apple guru out there please help.
By the way the only way I can get the laptop fans to stop is to pick it up off my lap and hold it vertically straight and the fans go off instantly. ***. Also whenever the fan problem occurs the keyboard light stops working. Ive spent £50 so far on travel to keep taking and collecting my MBP.
How many parts can they replace before I end up with a new one.
    Regards Peter.

Hi Allen, thanks for the support. i did change to All Processes and there was nothing heavy going on, the only app I had running was chrome with this forum on.
Tomorrow Im going to contact the Apple Repair centre that has been doing the work so far. I guess Im just going to have to give them as much info as pos, pretty much what they have been told so far. Thing is you give your much loved macs to these expert and expect them to know what to repair but that doesn't seem to be the case with this. I deal with macs for a living but just not internally so its very frustrating. There are plenty of people out there with a similar issue out but the solutions people use seem to differ quite a lot, none of which have worked for me.
    GET THIS
One strange way I can stop the fan is if the screen is kind of at its normal angle as Im using it on my lap, if I adjust the angle of the screen towards me about and inch the fan stops (LOL). What the **** is that all about. Only problem is its then very hard to use my laptop.
    Cheers Peter.

  • Fan runs all the time after upgrade to 10.4

Upgraded to 10.4 about a week ago and now the fan runs all the time. I lowered the processor to reduced performance because the fan noise was very loud. Doing this lowered the fan speed but did not stop it. Memory usage is not a problem, shows 75% free.
Before 10.4 was using 10.3 fan ran at times but never all the time.
    Any ideas.

Tom, have you down loaded an app like "X Resource Graph", I think I got it at VersionTracker, which will tell you what fan is running at high enoug rpm's to generate noise. Plus it will give you cpu usage and temps plus hard drive temps. If its the cpu fan and the cpu is really working, go to the Activity Monitor in the utilities file and see what app is causing the problem. I don't know what to do if it's the hard drive or system fan. My system fan rarely goes over 1800 rpm, my hard drive stays between 2000 and 2200 but my cpu fan will accelerate when its under pressure to to over 3000 rpm. I just start hearing the cpu fan when it gets to 2400 rpm.

  • Brand new iMac 3.4GHz fan runs all the time - how do I stop it?

Hi, just opened my shiny new imac but the fan runs all the time and very loud! Has anyone any ideas how to fix this or should I return the imac to apple?
I've also noticed that none of my external drive icon show up on the desktop - nor does the imac hardrive icon appear - any ideas?
    Thank you in anticipaction.

Try an SMC reset, you may need to do it at least 2x.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Laptop fan runs all the time, broker runtime cpu usage after Windows 10 final upgrade

ENVY 17t-J100 Leap Motion, 16 GB RAM, i7, SSD primary, HDD secondary drives. Avast antivirus free. Windows Firewall. The laptop had Windows 8.1 and everything was great. I did the Windows 10 Home free upgrade on Day 1. Everything seemed fine. Fingerprinter reader and everything works. Great. But then I noticed that the fan was always running and the left side of the metal casing gets hot. In task manager heat map sorted by CPU usage, Broker Runtime is at the top. Not much ram, about 10 MB. But the CPU usage is always 20% and higher. Doesn't seem like much. But it makes the fan run all the time and the laptop heats up with it running all the time. Anyone else seen this? General internet searching shows this has been an issue with Broker Runtime since Windows 8 and not unique to any brand of computer. But it wasn't like this when I was using WIndows 8.1 One forum said it was the P2P Windows update feature and my laptop was sharing updates. So I disabled that and rebooted. No change. Now I see some people saying it is the Live Tiles features in the Start Menu. But I had live tiles with the WIndows 8 menu and no issues. The only way to disable Live Tiles globally is to edit the registry, and I shouldn't have to do that for this. And I like Live Tiles. So not sure that really is the issue either.

I know there are people weary to update Windows 10 since there have been a few news reports with some people having the infinite reboot loop after installing a particular update  For me, yes. All updates applied and automatic updates enabled. This Runtime Broker issue has been there since the upgrade and all updates to this point.

  • T61 fan runs all the time on AC, does not when on battery

    Hello,
with the lastest BIOS (and those before) my T61's (8889)  fan runs all the time when it is AC powered. (After initial start it begins with 0, then ~2500 rpm, then ~3100 rpm and then stays there even if idle).
When on battery under the same circumstances, it doesn't go above ~2500rpm (which is far less noisy then the ~3100rpm level) and often it even stops.
As far as the BIOS settings allow, it is trimmed to max. power saving also when AC powered but still it's getting on my nerves.
Can Lenovo please look into this and make it as quiet as it is on battery also when on AC?
P.S. I cannot see that the temperature levels as reported through ACPI are any higher on AC then on battery, so I don't understand why the fan has to run all the time that loud when on AC.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
There are two options for you to consider:
    1) Better CPU speed management:
    - Install a utility called "RMClock" to better manage the CPU (it's a free utility that throttles the CPU to run at different speeds depending on the needs - the CPU speeds increase automatically to full power when required).
    - By regulating the CPU speed, the fan will not need to work that often to expell hot air, because the CPU generates much less heat.
    - you will find a quick "how-to" for using RMClock --> HERE
    2) BIOS thermal management
    - You can change the BIOS settings for the "thermal management" (enter BIOS, choose "Config", then "Thermal Management" ) . Change the fan control from "performance" to "battery optimized" under the "plugged-in" option. This will reduce the frequency with which the fan runs, but beware that if your system is plugged in and you're not using any CPU management - meaning that your CPU is running at full speed, then the system will heat up more than you'll be comfortable with!!
I would therefore suggest that you use a CPU throttling management utility (like RMClock mentioned above) together with the thermal management option in your BIOS. This will reduce the frequency with which the fan starts and operates but still keeping the system cool.
A completely different approach is to install and use "Thinkpad Fan Control" -- read this thread ... Be aware that the utility takes a lot of tweaking to get the settings right, but also be aware that you can damage your system if you do not make the right settings!!!
    Hope this helps!

  • Pink HP mini 110 fan runs all the time...

    Dear HP and community,
Does anyone know if it is normal for the fan in my HP mini to run all of the time?  I love my pink little HP mini but the fan running all of the time is rather annoying.  I got my HP mini at Best Buy and now they no longer have the HP mini in pink at Best Buy...  If this is a mechanical problem, would I have to exchange my computer at Best Buy or would HP be able to help me so that I could exchange it for another pink one?  I guess I'm getting ahead of myself!  I hope it is an easy fix but am afraid since I've only had my mini for a few weeks....
    Thoughts?
    Erin

You probably should repost this in the notebook hardware forum where you will find other Mini users to compare notes. I have heard that the fan on the Mini comes on frequently, but not as you described (all the time). On the netbook front, I am still using the Asus 1000H, which is whisper quiet BTW.
If your 110 is determined to be faulty, HP will probably choose to repair it if it is still under warranty.

im update firmware for iphone 5 to 6.1.4 getting error 9 every time try to restore iphone 5 crash on me tell me to go to itunes did it on a pc got error -1 so had a go on my mini mac get error 9 all the time

This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • My fan runs all the time on my mac

Help, the fan on my mac is running all the time even when I do not have any applications running.
It will not go off unless I power down the mac.

Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller? That is a good first step for power related issues such as this.
    Best of luck.
