Mac Mini fan rattle

I recently purchased a Mac Mini, and when I first got it, the fan was a quiet blowing noise, but now the fan rattles and whines constantly. What should I do?

The first thing I would try is to perform an SMC reset on the system:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
-Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, +making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.+
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If the fan continues to run at full speed after that, does it do so right from power on, or on;y after the system has been running a few minutes?

Mac mini fan starts every 20 secs

After reviewing posts with similar issues, I tried:
- Rresetting PRAM
- Resetting the SMC
- Since I wanted to do a clean install for a while, I did a Snow Leopard clean install.
After all of this, the mac mini fan starts and inmediatley goes quiet. It repeats this over an over every 20 seconds.
What else can I try? My Mac mini is from 2007 (2 GHz, Intel Core Duo 2)

Since you've done a clean install (and updated to current/latest release?), and the AHT didn't find any obvious issues, and an SMC reset didn't help, let's look at more causal sources.
Have you looked at the vents on the bottom to ensure they are free of lint/dust/animal hair/etc? Plugged intake vents can cause high temperatures and the fan behavior you're hearing.
Have you looked at the Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) to see is any program is using much of the processor, which would drive heat in the system?
Do you have iStat Pro so you can see what the temps are on various components?

Mac Mini fan increase speed and noise

Hi all.
Quick question. This has been bugging me for a while so decided to get some expert help from you guys.
Lately my new mac mini fan has been operating at full speed sometimes when the computer wakes from sleep and also while restarting or when holding down command and R for the recovery partition. The computer I must say is not suffering any performance issuses or is not under any hard loads.
This is getting very annoying! I have reset the SMC as per apples instructions and it has got better. I am wondering if my external firewire drive is causing problems.
I will explain my hardware set up.
One UPS which is plugged in and the mini runs off that. USB cable from the UPS is attached to the back of the mini. I have one thunderbolt display, one printer on USB, one EYETV USB dongle, Bose speakers plugged into the USB as well.
The firewire drive goes to sleep after 30 mins have elapsed. I guess if I am not using it, eject it and leave the cable from the back of the drive unplugged until I need it again? trying to unplug it from the mini is a chore as the desk space is small.
Any thoughts would be great.

Mac Mini fan on high, UI frozen. Had to shut it off. Any way to tell what the problem was when I boot it back up?

I leave my Mac Mini on constantly as a HTPC. I came home after being at work all day to find the fan on high and the lock screen incredibly sluggish. I have no idea how long it was like that, it's never done anything like it before. I couldn't login because it was too slow, I had to force it to shut off. Is there any way to see what it could've been when I boot it up, such as log files or something like that? I was hoping to get in to see top or the activity monitor but as I said earlier, I wasn't able to log in.

I had TeamViewer 9 installed. The Preferences window that contained the Uninstall button would not open so I just moved the .app to the trash. Last night I:
Installed TeamViewer 10 as it was the latest version, I figured I had that one previously
Uninstalled it using the preferences pane
Realized from the /private/var/db/receipts (I think) entries that I had TV9 installed previously, not 10
Installed TeamViewer 9
Tried to uninstall TV9, found the broken preferences pane and remembered why I just deleted it in the first place
Upgraded it to TV10
Uninstalled it using the preferences pane
I'll check on it tonight, but I think it's okay. I want to do a grep -r -i "teamviewer" / when I get back to see if anything is left behind.

Intel Mac Mini fans run full blast even when off

Hi All,
I have gone through the forums and haven't found an answer to this one. I have an Intel Mac Mini running the latest updated Tiger that I use solely for a media center.
About a week ago, the box started running fans full blast, regardless of whether it was actually turned on or not. As soon as it is plugged in the fans blast.
Otherwise, it seems healthy, and boots normally.
The steps I have taken so far include resetting permissions, verifying the disk, and resetting the SMC in the proscribed fashion.
After this occurred, I downloaded and installed smcFanControl from Lifehacker.com. This reported fan speed of zero and Temperature of zero.
Next I opened the case and insured the fan/HD cable next to the lttle battery was securely fastened as this had been reported to cause this symptom.
What's next? The device is out of warranty and honestly, I don't want to spend any money if I can help it.
Should I take it apart further and see if the other end of the fan/HD cable has somehow worked loose?
Can anyone think of another cause besides a loose cable?
What if I completely disabled the fan? The hardest thing I ever ask it to do is run iTunes and VLC.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have refurbished two G5s with LCS and screaming fans (this was avery common problem with G5 LCS macs), the red light on the motherboard could mean the CPUs need to be re-seated. This red LED light appeared on my mac after I had removed the CPUs to add new thermal paste.
If you have done all the necessary basics with no sucess here are a few things to try next.
1 - Coolant
As BDAqua mentioned above, coolant evaporates and often leaks at the 'O' rings, to check this you will need to remove the CPUs from the LCS and check for crystalisation (white rice). If you have leakage, it will be time to drain the block, add new coolant and 'O' rings. This is tricky to do but there is lots of info here and on other sites to help you.
2 - Thermal paste
Replace the thermal paste with Artic MX4.
Try the above and let is know how ou get on.

Mac Mini fan won't turn off (only while powered on)

Unlike some stories i've read while crawling around the internet trying to solve MY problem, it's not that my fan won't shut off EVER. The fan shuts down when i put it in sleep mode or shut down the Mini. No problems there. But while the computer is in operation, the fan runs non-stop.
It wasn't always like this. In the 2.5 years i've had my Intel Mac Mini, it has more and more frequently employed the fan. As of the last couple months, the fan is now in continuous use, as long as the computer is in operation. In addition, all the programs take much longer to load, and i'm dealing with programs crashing (Firefox & Safari far more than anything), Bluetooth not functioning, and the front light on my Mini is out.
As for the fan, the Mini is getting plenty of breathing room...even more than it had before the problem. I also have 22GB left on my Mini's hard disk.
Are all these problems related? Am i really just working on my last thruster here? Is my dilitium crystal just about dead? Is a warp core breach imminent? I do not have AppleCare, and i don't know if the Apple Store would look at it for free if i brought it in. Any help (no matter how small) would be greatly appreciated.

When you start your mini from cold (after at least an hour powered down) does the fan spin up to full speed immediately, or does it start out normally and then speed up after a few minutes or so? Did you have the system open for any reason just before this behavior started?
If you had the system open, it might be something as simple as the fan control cable that is not connected. When disconnected, the fan will run at full speed all the time.
It the fan runs at full speed almost immediately from cold, then it would suggest one of two things: either the system is suffering from something like a loose heatsink, or there is an errant process running that is putting the system under heavy load. You can check that by opening Activity Monitor (in Applications>Utilities) at looking to see if the CPU load is consistently high. If it is, look for a process that is causing it.
If the fan runs quietly at first, and then speeds up, after a few minutes, then it does seem likely to be a heating issue. Aside from making sure the vents around the base and on the back are clear by using a good vacuum cleaner, it's possible there is enough debris inside to obstruct the airflow. If you've opened up the system previously for any reason, now might be a good time to do so again, for a quick inspection and clean out.
I would also perform an SMC reset if you have not already done so:
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
-Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
And to ensure you are not suffering from a range of broad 'tuning' type issues, download a copy of YASU (http://jimmitchelldesign.com/projects/yasu/) and run all tasks. This clears cache files, resets logs files, updates prebinding, performs a permission repair and a few other tasks. After the reboot (which will be slower than usual) your system should run a little better.

You can make an appointment at the 'genius Bar' of your local Apple store - they will look at your system for free, and help with a diagnosis. What they generally wont do without charging for it is anything that involves opening the system up. However, it's worth paying them a visit for a bit of hands on work!

MAC Mini: fan ran at full speed on power on - advice please

I powered my MAC Mini on as normal today by pressing the power button on the back of the unit, but rather than the light coming on at the front, the MAC started up, but with its internal fan running at full blast - no front panel light. It seemed to be booting (Apple logo and so forth on the normal grey screen) but I powered it off at the wall socket, then on again after a couple of seconds via the rear power button, and normality returned. Anyone got any ideas whet might have happened? Could I have held the rear button for too long? I couldn't see anything in the logs once the machine had booted.
The MAC is an Intel model with 1GB memory installed. It's a couple of months old, running MAC OS 10.4.10 Update 1. Other than a panic caused by an SMB dismount problem soon after I got the machine the system has been fine since new.

The experience you've had with your mini isn't a common one, but it has been reported from time to time, so it's not unheard of. I don't think there's been a clear reason found for this happening, and there is certainly not one from your description of this specific incident, but among the users I have who run Intel minis, I have had one where a boot failure occurred - the power light failed to light, though the chime was present and the system commenced startup then kernel panicked. An SMC reset was done and it has not happened again - though it may be purely coincidental that it hasn't happened again.
I would suggest that since you switched power off at the wall before rebooting, it would be wise to check you didn't inadvertently damage the drive's data structure or directories - not likely, but possible if the drive was attempting to write at the time, and then do an SMC reset. If you get any other similar events, post back, with as much detail as possible, including any odd behavior you may have experienced in the previous use, and what software you've installed.
To check the drive, run Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities), then select the internal drive and firstly, click 'repair permissions', then once done, click 'verify disk'. Errors in the permissions will be repaired, though any in the process of verifying the disk would indicate the drive needs a repair which can be tried by booting the system to the original install disk (holding the C key down during startup) and running Disk Utility from there, this time clicking 'repair disk'.
To perform an SMC reset,
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
-Wait at least 15 seconds.

Mac Mini fan running loudly after Safari upgrade

Mac Mini 2GHz is around 2 months old. All been fine until yesterday. When running Safari (it seems) and not necessarily heavy usage fan starts runningvery loudly. In the previous 2 months NEVER heard the fan or at least it's been very quiet, so am quite concerned. It appears that this has coincided with updating to the very latest Safari release 3.1.1.
Anyone else having similar problem and/or advice?

The new Safari release supposedly has some issues with Flash media files and with Windows Media files -- and will require updates of the helper programs that display those formats.
Does the fan run loudly when you visit sites with such files? Or does it also run loudly if all you visit is sites with no video files on them?

Mac Mini fan and overheating.

Lately I've noticed that the fan on my Mac Mini is running all the time. What should be the cycle run up and down time of the fans? It' s an Intel 1.66 Mac Mini, the only thing that I did to it recently is upgrade the RAM from 1 GB to 2 GB. Does the fans on the Core Duo MAC MINI's run all the time? When I first got it I don't remember it being on all the time. And does the Mac Mini have a Temp sensor? I downloaded a widget to show me the internal temp but the widget said it can't find a sensor.

yes the fan does run constantly, but it should be nearly inaudible. that is to say it shouldn't be going full blast all the time. There is a sensor and one of the common reasons for a fan running full blast 24/7 is this sensor becomes disconnected when intalling ram and left unhooked. I'd check that out first. did you upgrade the ram yourself? if you did, open the mini back up and check your connections, if not, bring it to wherever you got the ram installed and tell them to fix it.

Mac Mini Fan

I have the Mac Mini (Mid 2011) and have found that recently, the fan is always on, louder than usual.
When I reboot my computer, the fan exhaust is running at 4162 RPM - No applications are running. ( I am not sure if this is the correct speed, but it was never this loud.)
I have tried rebooting and software updates, but nothing has worked.
Any Solutions?

Mac Mini Fan Still Running After Turning Off Computer

I turned off my computer (Mac Mini) and, after the screen had gone black and the light turned off, I still heard the fan running. I turned off the monitor and my speakers, but it was neither of them, it was the mini. It also wouldn't let me turn it on again. I tried, but the light wouldn't come on. So I unplugged the power cable and plugged it back in and it turned on. Any reason why this happened and should I be worried?

Mac Mini Fans run when computer is off

I have a 2009 Mac Mini that has a system fan that runs full blast as soon as the power supply is plugged in(unit is off). When I turn it on the fan stays full blast. I have tried resetting the SMC and PRAM. I'm assuming a component failure on the logic board but I figured I would check with the good people here to see if I'm missing anything.

Yep, MOT is Motor, but I think can be sensor for the motor 7458 is the RPM I believe, but not sure it can go that high in reality.

Mac mini fan is very loud when watching a dvd

Hi,
Just bought a Mac mini (2GBRam 2GHz intel) and when watching a dvd the fan spins very loud which gets very annoying! Is this normal for watching dvd's on the Mini as I have a Macbook with similar specs and there is not much sound from that when watching dvd's. I installed 10.5.1 on the Mini and the Macbook still has 10.4.11...Any ideas?

The reset is always worth trying, just in case the problem is in the system controller. However, I'm not sure that I'd blame MacOS itself for the problem, because it does not appear to be similarly reported elsewhere. As such, I'd say that if you can't resolve this with a reset, you may find the next best option is an erase and install of Leopard, followed by downloading and installing the 10.5.1 update from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1051update.html
Of course, since an erase and install wipes the hard drive, it is essential you back up your data before you do this!
