Mac Mini file server with 10.5.8 and folder permissions

Our office has a Mac Mini we use as a file server.  We each connect over our network with a common user.  All of the folders we use are on the root.  When one creates a subfolder, the permissions on the new folder are read only.  One has to go on to the mini and reset the permissions rw- for 'everyone' then all is well.  Is there a way to create a user which we would use to connect from our own mac that will be allowed to create folders with rw- permissions?

If you are using the Go menu "Connect to Server" and logging in with a generic Server User-name and password, the permissions of any files you create should be those of the Server User with which you logged in.
If you are just clicking on a sidebar item and using the Finder WITHOUT logging in as a unique User on the Server, the files you create will be owned by the Creator (not the generic Server User) and follow the Creator's permissions.
I find I am sometimes already connected as a guest, and the login dialog does not come up. If I want specific permissions on the Server, I need to eject the Server drive and Connect to Server again. This time I get the login dialog and can enter the username I desire.

  • Setting up the Mac Mini (non server) with RAID 1

I have a regular Mac Mini (Mid 2011) with Lion OS.  I would like to change the hard disk to 2 1TB drives and use RAID1 to add some reliability to my data.  Is this possible in the non-server Mac mini?  Do I need to remove all my data to convert the system to RAID1 (assuming I can)?

Yes- Colin Jeukens posted step by step instructions back a couple of months ago. Here it is again...
Out of the box the mini comes without Raid. You have two identical HDs of 500Gb.
I have just set it up as Raid1. You can't do this when you use the startup disk from the mini. And as you don't have a Superdrive ... you need to be creative. You need another Mac with Firewire.
Step 1: Start the Mini in Target Mode. Press the T during start. In a few seconds the firewire logo will appear on your screen.
Step 2: Go to your second Mac. Connect the firewire cable between second Mac and Mini.
Step 3: On the second Mac start the disc utility. The two identical drives on your mini will show. Create a new Raid set (mirrored = Raid 1). Include both drives. Confirm the warning that all data on the mini will be lost.
Step 4: Make sure your second Mac has CD/ DVD sharing option installed. This is tou use the superdrive to install OS X Server on the mini.
    Step 5: Shutdown both Macs
Step 6: Start your second Mac in target mode. Make sure the firewire cable is still connected.
Step 7: Start the Mini with the option key pressed.
Step 8: Insert the OS X Server install disc in your second Mac.
Step 9: wait till the drive logo apears om the Mini. Continue the install. Will take about an hour.

  • Mac mini file server question...

I would like to configure my mac mini G4 as a file server using the current OS X Tiger operation system. Basically I will use another computer as the web server and have the mac mini host the files for it.
Any recommendations or restraints for doing this? Do I have to worry about the Mac Mini going to sleep mode? Can OS X handle this kind of operation?
    Thank you for your help

Yes my Mini is running the latest version of OSX. I also run Windows XP, Vista beta, Linux: PCLinux & Ubuntu on it through Parallels. I have zero problems between Mac & Linux. The only thing I'd recommend is depending what OSes you're working with you might want to partition and set-up a common FAT32 area. I know Linux can't write to NTFS (tho Xandros 4 can) and Windows doesn't like the Mac drive system much. So FAT32 is the common file system all operating systems can read/write to fine. Overall I don't foresee you having any real problems.

  • Wired (Ethernet) Mac Mini file sharing with wireless Windows 7 PC

    Hi Guys,
I'm new to the Mac experience having just bought a Mac Mini so be gentle please. I have the Mini connected to my router & internet the via Cat5 Ethernet cable. I also have a Dell Notebook running Windows 7 connecting wirelessly to that router. How do I get these 2 power-houses of the home computer industry to share files?

Well with 10.6 and windows file sharing follow these steps:
    1. First in windows 7 go to Control Panel. Then in the File sharing panel don't do a Home Group because this is for Windows 7 networks ONLY!. Use the Advanced file sharing to share files.
    2. While still on Windows 7 go to Control Panel-System and get the workgroup name or change it to you want. Also while still in 7 click on the start button in the search box type: cmd . The command line will come up and on the first line type: ipconfig /all . Then write down the Windows 7 IP address (you will need to know this info).
    3. Now in 10.6.x open System Preferences->Network pane, Advanced button. In the drop-down click on the WINS tab and put in the name of the Workgroup name and at the bottom of the pane hit the + button and add the IP address of the Windows 7 machine.
    4. Now click on OS X desktop and click on the Go menu name. In the drop-down select "Connect to Server" . When the panel opens up put in your Windows 7 IP address and connect. The keyboard shortcut for the Connect to Server is the Command key+k. Then log in the Windows 7 with the Windows 7 username and password.
    Any questions?
One more thing: read the how to File Sharing: Snow Leopard And Windows 7.

  • Mac mini file server on a windows network

I would like to run a mac mini server on a windows network.
Do I need a router or a switch?  Does the mini support client data backups?  Are the users & permissions setting robust and easy to use?
SMB is the protocol?  It is my understanding that this is easy with xp but more difficult with windows 7, has this been resolved?
    thanks

Might have better luck asking in the Lion Server forum.

  • Mac Mini Sever - Public Share - how enable read and write permissions for new remote files

    Hi,
this Sunday a friend ask me to help hum with a problem on is Man Mini Server. He has a small office and uses the mini server to share a public folder to all his employees.
Everyone that creates a file, saves it to the public folder at the mini mac.
That problem is that, who creates the file owns it and remains with read-only permissions to everyone else. The owner has to change the file permission in order to the rest of the employees can work on it.
I do not know mac arquitecture, I only work with windows and linux, but i suspect the principles are the same.
We try to create another folder , and share it, but it happens the same. Have you any ideas on what is wrong?
I suspect it has anything to do with de file Sharing at the mini mac, but it has read and write permissions for everyone.
    Thanks for your help.

signed applet. You aren't going to find any easy way to distribute that policy file to users, and that policy file, if you asked me to put it on my PC, I'd tell you to take a flying leap. That would open any applet to access.

  • My Mac mini starts up with a black screen and white writing.

Okay basically I purchased a Mac mini (Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8GHZ 1GB RAM model) in Feburay 2008, and in June 2008 i decieded to bring it to a store to get it upgraded to 2GB. At the store the guys told me my Mac mini wouldnt accept 2GB, they reckon it was 'cause of the logic board. So they put a new one in and was able to succesfully install 2GB.
Since that day my Mac mini stopped starting up with the apple logo. Now it starts up with the white/greyish background without the apple logo, then goes to a black screen and just runs pass loads of white text then its ready to use with no problems. It does this all the time.
I've read a little about the Kernal Panic and looked at pictures of it, but what I have doesn't look like the kernal panic pictures i'm seeing.
So i am writing this pose to find out whats wrong with my Mac mini, can anyone help me?
Oh, I nearly forgot. When i turn the Mac mini off it does the same black screen with white text stuff before fully shutting down.

Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release them when you hear the second startup chime; this clears a setting which causes it to start up into verbose mode each time.

This continues throughout the day and does not stop. I forcefully stopped the process with
    sudo serveradmin stop postgres
However, I actually want to use the database for Roundcube. Is there any way to fix this?

You would need to look at the Postgres error log. The only thing I can tell you is that the problem is not caused by any OS X Server process.

  • I have a brand new Mac Mini (July 2014) with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB hard drive and I typed in my screen saver password today and it froze up.  Had to push the power switch and restart the computer.  Why, and what can I do to prevent this?

It shouldn't crash just because I type in my screen saver password.  But it did.  I had to push the power button to shut it down and turn it back on.

Freezes happen occasionally. Hard to pinpoint a cause. I wouldn't let it worry you as they are rare. If this happens often then post back as there may be something wrong.

  • Home Mac Mini Yosemite Server and Time Capsule

    Hello again,
I''m looking to have a Mac Mini Yosemite home server with my dot com pointed to my fixed IP.
I have a laptop, an iPad 2 and an iPhone 6 to manage in the beginning.
It's mostly to practice skills for employment purposes.
If I get the latest october 2014 Mac Mini with Server 4 and I want to back up the server on a Time Capsule 3 TB:
    Will it create big backups:
Some macs will be backed up to Mac Mini Yosemite Server Time Machine Services.
iPad and iPhone backed up in iTunes, on the server or the laptop?
What else can be a problem?
    François

    Hello DC,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
For the problem I try to anticipate, it was like those mac with Bootcamp, where Windows is one big file and a simple log on-log out on Boot Camped  Windows would change the big piece of bread and another complete multi GB would be backed up. the runaround was not to time-machine the Windows file and use a PC backup for the Windows stuff.
In the same vein, if users back up to the Mac-Mini server in a sparse image, does'nt that fill the backups of the server which is also a sparse image?
I agree with you that an external Time Machine HDD is more flexible as more than 3 TB can be needed down the road.
As for open ended question, effectively, you read it right, I am looking for problems I did not anticipate from user who bumped into them.
    Thanks

  • Mac Mini as Server?

Has anyone had success with using a Mac Mini as a server on a network? We're wanting to setup a Mac build agent for a continuous integration server, and the Mac Mini seems like a good lower-cost option to the Mac Pro or XServe. This wouldn't get a huge amount of load either.
Has anyone tried using these as servers on a network? What has your experience been?

I had the same questions and concerns. I wanted to upgrade our office from a NAS to an actual server and had read multiple posts on using a Mini as a Server. I made the plung last month and have most of the services up and running.
Our small construction office is mixed with 7 PC's and 4 macs, in addition, we wanted to enable our New Orleans office to VPN to a centralized server. I know, its pretty simple, but we did not have that before. In addition, we wanted our PM's to be able to access the server while out of the office. We are a small office that generally run off Word, Excel and PDF files for the most part, most of which are under 10MB, and a few plan sets that may be 50-60MB, so nothing too large. Our accounting files are also on the server, and thee files are up to 800MB. But no problems.
I ended up going with a Mac Mini 2.0Ghz with 4GB of Ram and SL server as well as a Lacie 2TB external Raid drive and will add another one for backups and client backups. I am not a tech geek, by any means, and did not want to become one to implement a new server, but had read through a few of the manuals at night prior to deciding and implementing. We are using the mini as the boot drive, and then storing all the data on the Lacie in Raid 1 mode for mirroring.
I would have to say it was pretty painless. Once the SL Server software was loaded on the mini, everything else was pretty simple to log in remotely and take care of. Creating and copying the sharepoints was relatively easy, as well as setting up the individual accounts (Since there were only 10). I did have to spend 2 hours refining my understanding of permissions for the sharepoints, but other than that, the VPN and the file server functions were easy. We are running AFP and SMB, which again, sounded like I may get lost, but no problems thus far. The morning we made the actual switch I had to re-map the PC clients network drives to map the new Mini server sharepoints, but that took all of 5 minutes each. We did also change the internal network settings to a more obscure setting vs. 192.168.1.XXX to avoid any conflicts with other internal addresses when we were VPNing. I did want to note, I read a comment that said the individual could not get the VPN running on a Mini, but was able to run it on a Mac Pro. We did not have that problem at all. In fact, I was actually confused when it was able to connect the first time after we changed the network address. I expected to have to screw with it at least 30 minutes, but the first time, I was shocked.
I have really been monitoring the processor usage of the mini and we are generally at 2-5% with 10 people using files. I wanted to run our web server and email off of it, but heard that is a big no no from all the posts on hosting external info on an internal machine. I will hold off of that for now, maybe just buy another in a few months for the external, but will stick with our hosting service for now.
If anyone reading this has concerns about using a Mini as a server and are in a similar situation, I can only say we have not had any problems thus far. I was nervous at first because even the apple business partners always push for the Mac Pro, or XServe. I actually called the Apple support line and spoke with an Apple Engineer if it would work. Other than the fact the Mini only has one boot drive, he indicated it should work for our purposes. If the Mini does go down, we will just end up hooking the Lacie up to a client and open the files for sharing for a day or so until we get a new mac mini up and running. It is still cheaper than a Mac Pro and is doing the job fine so far.
I will try and update in a month or so.

Look for a program called BlueHarvest. I'm not sure if it still works with Mountain Lion.
I believe your file server can be set up to handle the metadata files, but I suppose that would depend on the Server software and your IT staff.

  • LDAP and NFS mounts/setup OSX Lion iMac with Mac Mini Lion Server

    Hello all,
I have a local account on my iMac (Lion), and I also have a Mac Mini (Lion Server) and I want to use LDAP and NFS to mount the /Users directory, but am having trouble.
We have a comination of Linux (Ubuntu), Windows 7 and Macs on this network using LDAP and NFS, except the windows computers.
We have created users in workgroup management on the server, and we have it working on a few Macs already, but I wasnt there to see that process.
Is there a way to keep my local account separate, and still have NFS access to /Users on the server and LDAP for authentification?
    Thanks,
    -Matt

It would make a great server. Bonus over Apple TV for example is that you have access via both wired ethernet and wireless. Plus if you load tools from XBMC, Firecore and others you have a significant media server. Cost is right too.
Many people are doing this - google mac mini media server or other for more info.
Total downside to any windows based system - dealing with constant anti-virus, major security hassels, lack of true media integration and PITA to update, etc.
You should be aware that Lion Server is not ready for prime time - it stil has significant issues if you are migrating from SNL 10.6.8. If you buy an apple fresh Lion Server mac mini you should have no problems.
    You'll probably be pleased.

  • Workaround for remote with Apple TV + Mac Mini media server?

We have to keep unplugging and then replugging our Apple TV 2 any time we want to use our Mac Mini media server instead of the Apple TV on our home entertainment system. Alas, the lack of a power button.
The reason we have to do this is because the remote control signals are identical for the two units; we're using Plex TV on the Mac Mini, and when we use our universal remote, if the Apple TV is on, then unintended things happen in the background on the Apple TV any time we control the Plex media server. Ack. We could end up buying a video that we don't want.
What workarounds are there, to avoid plugging and unplugging the Apple TV, if we want to keep using a remote control with both the Apple TV and with the Mac Mini media server? I understand that plugging and unplugging it is not desireable.
On the other hand, we do shut off power completely to our entire entertainment system, via the power conditioner, when we're not using it, to conserve. I suppose that's equivalent to plugging and unplugging the Apple TV?
    Your thoughts?

I know its been 17 months since anyone replied to your post, but I stumbled upon your request, because I had the same issue. However, I can faithfully say that I solved this same problem, because I inadvertendly programmed my MX-980 remote to control my Apple TV and Mac Mini at the same time and didn't realize until much later what was happening. I use my Mac Mini (for the purpose of using PLEX) and my Apple TV for other purposes. Here's a discussion I had over at remotecontrol.com about it.
The solution for you is have two Apple remotes. You can buy an extra apple remote at a good price over at Amazon.
Out of box, the apple remote is designed to pair with your Mac and Apple TV as long as pairing is enabled on those machines by default. However, it's the consumer's responsibility to physically pair that remote with the machine you want to control so it can't control any other machine. That's the trick you were missing...
So, if you have an Apple TV and Mac Mini next to each other -- a single Apple Remote will control BOTH machines at the same time out of box. This is not the intended result as you have indicated. Therefore you need two apple remotes.
Mac Mini: Once you have two apple remotes, go to your Mac Mini (OSX 10.9) and select under the Apple menu > Preferences > Security > General > Click unlock (bottom left corner) first > sign in > Then click Advanced... to see the Pairing process. If you click advanced *before* you click unlock icon, the pairing menu will be missing.
Note: You can also install free CandleAir preference for your Mac which is a slick interface for configuring apple remotes faster and easier IMHO. http://www.iospirit.com/labs/candelair/
Apple TV: Now take your second Apple Remote, go to Apple TV > Preferences > General > Remote and follow the on screen instructions to properly pair your remote control.
    This should solve your problem.
