Mac Mini First time... What do i need?

Hi everyone,
i just bought a Mac Mini Server for my small company with a bunch of IMACS (5 to be exact). We were before on Windows Server 2000 with all pc's. A **** of a difference with the Mac's. The Macs were very easy to connect to the Window Server 2000 and until now everything seem to work BUT it's now time to concentrate on the installation of the Mac Mini Server...
We used to have the Modem for internet + a router with cables for each machine to connect to the server... *Is the Linksys router that i have still necessary with the MAC MINI to connect all the machines to the server or is it WIRELESS????*
*If one of the IMACS client is about 100 feet away (in the warehouse) would it be able to connect to the Mac Mini Server wireless or do i have to connect it via Cable?*
Also, anybody has any suggestion to give me on how to set up these 5 client machines?
Thank you
William

Welcome to  Discussions!
You should be able to connect computer to computer wirelessly, but that's called an 'ad hoc' network and probably not your best way to run your network. You should still use some sort of a router, and you could use a wireless router.
However...
A wireless network will never, ever be as secure as a wired network. Every form of wireless network security has had an exploit of some sort discovered for it so far. A wire you've run won't suffer a 'man in the middle' attack. It also won't lose connectivity because of an errant device in the same wireless band. with a modem and a router, you have one point of penetration to guard. Don't give up the wires over the dazzle appeal of a wireless network. Any critical or sensitive data should be sent over wires.

Did your Mac Mini come pre-installed with Mountain Lion? If so, use Internet Recovery (Command+Option+R) keys at restart. You should see a spinning globe. This will boot into Apple's server Recovery HD and let you reinstall ML. So, you will need an Internet connection. Your apps and data will not be touched as this will just install the OS on top of itself.
Backup your system first before doing the above.

The transfer of photos from an iPhone to a Mac is an import. It is very similar to what happens when you move photos from any camera to the Mac (if you have ever done that). Instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
The iTunes sync can move photos the other direction (Mac to iPhone). That "sync" works the same way each time you do it -- it sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current iTunes photo page settings. Instructions for that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236

Visually impaired, I need instructions for someone else to set it up all over again, both lines out of mac Mini. Other discussions do not seem to be what I am looking for. I used something like faxstd I think. Not available for osX. What do I need? Thanks. Jack

Thanks. Now I think that I understand that my mac mini did not come equipped with a modem at all as I thought it would. So, I need to purchase something else now. I've already added several, at considerable cost. Little did I think that all these would be needed. Speakers, an iMic for recording sound. Now I wonder if I need another voice program to read text for me (not totally blind, so I don't enjoy constant comment about page names, http:// etc. I do love "Constant Comment Green Tea," however. And, in my old age, I enjoyed knowing about PhotoDeluxe, and can't use it on my Mac Mini. All these things to do differently is driving me nuts. The dsl modem was provided by my dsl line service. It seems strange that any commercially produced computer would be this incomplete. My old iMac had an internal modem. And, this new Apple does not? Strange. The iCloud settings for the computer and other devices are in the iCloud preferences in System Preferences. If you open iTunes with your iPhone connected to the computer, select the iPhone under Devices in iTunes' sidebar, then click on the Info tab in iTunes' main window. Look at the various items you see listed. Be sure to check the Mail component for your GMail account because it is not an iCloud mail account. Your Calendar and Contacts components should state that they are being synced by iCloud.

  • I have a WD My Passport for Mac (2 TB).  It quit backing up my mac mini (8/2013) stating that it needed to be repaired.  Our IT person reformatted it.  Now time machine states that it can't back up 234 GB,  because there's not enough space.

I have erased the passport for Mac and started all over. When there is ~15 minutes left in the initial backup of the mac mini hard drive (234 GB total), it gets weird and time machine states that it it calculating the time remaining.  24 hours later, it is still backing up but shows that <200 GB of 2 TB are available and it quits backing up stating that there is not enough room.  HELP!  The WD My Passport for Mac and the Mac mini are less than a year old.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Getting the Viewsonic VX2450WM monitor for it. There is no HDMI on this monitor, but reviews said it's Mac mini compatible.
Do I need to get an additional cord?  HDMI to DVI adapter cable? Does the supplied short white cord inside Mac Mini packaging suffice?
    Thank you!

No, the HDMI on Mini only support digital VGA is analogue
Can the HDMI port drive analog displays (VGA displays for example) using adapters?
No.  The HDMI port will drive digital connections—such as DVI—using the adapter that came with the Mac mini, but cannot be used for analog displays such as VGA. You can purchase a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter separately to drive analog displays.

  • Set up Mac Mini Server, now what?

I helped someone set up a Mac Mini Server just out of the box.
turned on, connected directly to their router, put in all the new info to set up the mac mini and then looked at it....
So we read we need to create SERVER USERS, not users for a separate account on the mac mini, but server users.  did that, or so we think we did...
one person who wants to run it is running 10.5.5 on is mac book, so I went to the iMac running 10.6 and went to sys prefs and connected to the server ... or so we think we did.
the green light is on but NOW WHAT?
the server doesn't show anyone connected.
but they can see the server on the side bar and when they connect to that, they have to use the password for the mac mini not their server password we created so they are not connected to it as a server they are connected as a hard drive, but the server admin software shows that NOW there is a user connected...
Am I missing something.  how do you take advantage of the server software if you have to connect like you would to someone else's computer?
and then why create server users on the server if they are not connecting to it through that?
    What are we missing?

I am not sure if this is exactly what the original poster was looking for, but perhaps I can try to clarify for him because I am coming from a similar place (and I think there might be a lot more of us now that server is a $50 add on, so a lot of novices setting up home or small business servers for the first time).
I think this problem might be worsened by the fact that though apple has done a decent job of explaining how to set things up in the server app itself, they seemed to have skipped over what you are supposed to do on your user computers that you are trying to connect with the server.
Anyway, I would like to start out with using server on my mac mini for file sharing and time machine backups (and then expand from there, once that is up and running), so I have gone through the setup of these in the server app: creating the user accounts, assigning them access to a couple of external HDs that I have attached to my Mac Mini, i tried to match the account names to the user accounts that are on the laptops that we are trying to wirelessly connect to the server, etc.
So my expectation is that then I would restart my computer, it would match up the username on the laptop with the username account on the server, i would login and then the file shares would automatically mount. Or, I could go into my Login options on my admin account of one of the laptops that I am trying to connect to the server and I could join it to the server. Both of these options seemed to be spelled out in the only explanation of what is supposed to happen from the user perspective, which was in the Snow Leopard documentation:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Mac_OSX_Server_v10.6_Getting_Started.pdf on pg 111 or so.
But neither of these routes are working for me, so I am wondering what I am doing wrong.

  • Buying mac for first time....couldn't find better spot to post this

Hi, I'm currently a pc user (well I use my brothers pc) and I'm really wanting to buy a mac but would like some feedback as to which one I should buy. My main reason for wanting a mac is to accelerate what I do with my digital photography and am impressed by the aperture program. I also love the iWork and iLife software. I'm torn between which system to purchase though, because I've never used a mac before in my life. The mini would be an inexpensive way to join the mac family but aperture wouldn't work well on it. The iMac intel seems to be where I see myself going but money is a consideration and I wouldn't know if bigger would be better. ie. would getting the 20" iMac be worth the extra money with the increase in clock speed. I could more afford the 17" with the memory upgrade I would need but am concerned that I would not be fully happy knowing that there is a faster and better one out there. Have any of you had experience in the performance difference between the 17" and 20" models. Any suggestions on my first mac purchase even if it is a serious rethinking to a different flavour of mac would be greatly appreciated. I'll be surfing the net too, in order to see if there are any rumours about new intel chips and new apples so I can decide if buying now would be best or wait till fall.
    thanks

If you can save up some extra money, go with the 20" with 2GB of RAM and 256 of video RAM. Seeing as you are a photographer, you want the biggest, best picture you can get. And, being that the new Intel based iMacs are forced to run a lot of programs in emulation (under Rosetta), and that emulation takes up a lot of RAM, maxing out RAM on an Intel based iMac is almost necessary. Speed isn't really an issue; .13GHz won't really be noticeable. However, if Aperture is processor intensive (I don't know if it is or not, being that I've never actually used it), then you may notice a difference. The big issue is screen size. I'm on the 20" right now. I got used to it, and two days ago, went to the Apple store to check out the new MacBooks. I took a look at the 17" iMacs, and was astonished at how small they appeared. I really got used to a 20" screen, and couldn't imagine working on anything smaller. Now, as you seem to know, the Mac Mini isn't really an option; it's just not powerful enough for intensive digital management. So, again, I really think your best option would be the 20" iMac, with, at the least, 1GB of RAM, and 256MB of video RAM. It's pricey, but definitely worth it. And, it'll be a very powerful machine, and will most definitely last you a good 5, maybe 6 years. Keep in mind, you can always upgrade RAM yourself (I actually suggest you purchase RAM from an external company; it'll be much cheaper), but you can't upgrade video RAM further than the initial purchase.
P.S. - Other World Computing offers very cheap, guaranteed compatible RAM for any Mac. Check it out. I got 1GB of RAM (for a total of 1.5GB) for $141 from them, including shipping. The same from Apple is $300.
    I really hope this helps!

  • Mac Mini (first models)

We just received as a gift a Mac Mini that was bought in March 2005 but had never been used. It is a model #M9687LL/A (came with Panther on it). Apple.com does not have specifications for this model on their site (model #M9687LL/B is available there) that I can find. I would like to know the specifications of this model and any other info I can get on it. Can anyone help?

    Welcome to Discussions, cpwhite.
Everything I know about anything Mac I've learned in these forums, just since September when I bought my Mini. You will be amazed and grateful at all that you can learn here, from observation as well as participation.
This, my friend, is my first official answer in these posts; I'm always the one asking the questions.
Then again, it's not so much an answer as a bit of a guide. I Googled "model #M9687LL/A mac mini specifications" and got tons of results. This one seems to give any specs you may need:
    http://www.welovemacs.com/apmacmi1msp1.html
    As for
any other info I can get on it.
that's available at approximately sixteen bazillion sites — and thousands of places in these mac mini usage pages alone. Dream up a question, type in a word or two in the search space, and start an obsession you may never get over. I'm hooked.
And congratulations on receiving a great gift. Somebody must love you a lot to give you a Mini.
Love and peace and come back anytime,
    bonnieb
P.S. One thing I noticed in my time here: you get a lot more responses from a lot more super-brilliant technical wizards when you post questions on weekdays. When you see how much they help all of us neophytes all week long, you'll understand why they need their weekends. I do my best to forgive them for having a life, and try to schedule all major meltdowns, freakouts and disasters monday through friday
This is not to say don't post on weekends! There are still other souls out here happy to at least help you love your mini.

  • Mac Mini Overheating - probably my fault, still need help though.

    Hi all,
Well first off my Mac Mini is out of warranty, so one day I decided to crack it open and take a look around.
I removed the heatsink and the dodgy heatsink clips apple uses (2 of which broke while removing them) and was forced to buy some plastic screws to hold the heatsink on.
Ever since doing this my mini has been experiencing problems with heat.
Its a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo (1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) 80GB Hard Drive.
It already has the latest SMC firmware.
I have tried the SMC reset procedure, while the procedure did work the problems persist.
First question, what should be the idle temperature of this machine? it is idling at 60* Celsius or 140* Fahrenheit and 1500 RPM fan speed, the problem is even at 70 - 80*C or 167* Fahrenheit (full load) the fan only increases to 2300 RPM which is insufficient to cool the machine, resulting in a kernel panic and possibly triggering the Intel CPU's thermal protection circuit.
I have checked the CPU numerous times and tried various thermal paste quantities but this problem persists. I have also checked the fan connector which is definitely connected correctly, in fact all connectors are connected correctly I am sure of it and the reason I am sure is all the software is reporting the correct numbers for temps voltages currents etc.
Does anyone have any idea what i've done wrong apart from ever looking inside this thing in the first place? I really want to save it because it works fine apart from this issue.
PS. The only way to do any work is to do an SMC reset (during which the fan runs at full speed), while the fan is forced in full speed the thing works great but as soon as its back to normal the fan fails to adjust adequately).

It sounds like your method of attaching the heatsink is not as good at removing heat from the CPU as Apple's was.
I'd suggest getting one of the fan control programs and setting the minimum fan speed at 2500 RPM or more.
Another issue is whether or not you correctly replaced the T-shaped foam air-diverter on top of the hard drive.
Also be sure the Mini has free access to room temperature air, and is not sitting on or near other heat-producing equipment.
