Mac mini freezes after software update install in leopard

hello,
ever since i purchased my mac mini 8 months ago, it freezes when installing a software update that requires a restart. it seems to get through the whole process, but then freezes with the default galaxy desktop (even though that is no longer my desktop) with nothing else on the screen. i have even tried doing installs over night, but it is still hanging at the galaxy screen when i wake up in the morning.
unfortunately i did not deal with this when i still had my warranty and would like to avoid purchasing apple care.
any ideas? thanks so much!

I have exactly the same problem. My mac-mini was purchased only a few months ago. I downloaded the most recent update recommended by software update. I don't remember everything that was in the update but it included several files providing support for various digital cameras and iphoto. My mac mini is frozen showing only a white screen.

    Help!!!
I updated iTunes,Safri and an secriuty enhancement as the automatic reminder, it hang up at disk optimizing(77% competed) after installation, I had to forcely shut down, then I uninstalled several unnecessary softwares.
Then the finder froze, I failed to open any software, the coloured cursor keeps rolling and rolling.
But the folder operation is functioning.
    What should I do?
    Help!!

I don't have an answer to fix your problem unless you have your hard drive backed up onto another hard drive, but the answer would of course be obvious if this were the case.
I would like to point out that everybody that has a computer, laptop or desktop, should have their entire hard drive backed up onto another hard drive. It should be considered as a requirement, not a luxury.
Next, before ever installing a software update, you should run the "Repair Disk" function and also the Repair Permissions function of the Disk Utility app, from the install DVD. If there is corruption in your disk directory and you go ahead and install a software update, all manner of problems may arise.
I never let the software update Install automatically. I always download the update software, then do the preventive disk repair, permissions repair, then do a fresh backup of my entire hard drive, then run the update software's installer. Now if anything goes amiss, I am not out a thing, and I am in a good position to troubleshoot. So far I have never had any problems with any updates but this method will pretty much make sure that if you do ever have a problem you are not in any trouble. Just restore from your current, fresh backup.

  • HELP! Problems with MacBook after software updates install.

    Hi Guys,
I have a friend of mine that has a MacBook. After a while without doing the software updates she connected her MacBook on the internet and there was a lot of software updates to do, so she went on and install everything. She describes me that the problem was with Tiger 10.4.11, it pop up a "Warning Sign - Error" and freezes she says.
She re-start the computer and It get stuck on the gray window with the Apple with the lil circle spinning endless.
Is there any tip or something that I can help her?...
    [Sorry about my english... lol)

    Hello coreanomac!
The following Apple Support article is good for working through the problem. Based on your explanation of what happened, follow the advice of the "Try a different software update source" and "Installation fails during 'optimization'" paragraphs of the "Troubleshooting an unsuccessful installation" section:
Mac OS X: Troubleshooting installation and software updates
Also reading the "Before Installing" section may be useful, as well.

  • InDesign CS4 Crashes after Software Update Install

    Re: Indesign CS4 keeps crashing!
I am having the same problem. My InDesign CS4 was fine for months, no problems, until I got a software update available message and I downloaded the update and installed it. After the install I restarted the computer. Since then I can not open InDesign CS4 - it crashes on startup. I have no problem with my CS3 opening. My software is CS4 Design Premium. My computer is a MAC G5 running 10.4.11.

  • Freezing after software update

    Hi all,
I have had an issue today after installing a couple of updates via software update. The first was the latest safari update, downloaded fine, installed, prompted to restart. Clicked the button and got a blue screen with the spinning gear (what's the official name for this icon??) and it got so far and just froze. Had to hard restart at which point it looked as if it installed the package again and then restarted again, all ok. The exact same thing just happened with the security update. Anyone else have this problem? I suspect not as I'm slowly starting to think it is the additional 8GB of ram I installed from OWC causing this. I have trouble doing a restart as it is, just gets stuck in a clicking cycle between the DVD drive and the HD. If i take out the OWC ram, it restarts just fine. When running apps however, it seems to perform great. I have run the AHT and I ran Rember for 1 cycle and it reports all as ok. Done the usual resets. Does anyone have any idea at all!!???! Cheers.
PS, sent OWC tech support an email some time ago and they have yet to respond. Funny really, seen as I got an email from customer service there asking me what I thought of there tech support service regarding my recent ticket!
Could it be the ram, or mixture of ram? The macpro restart (boots up fine, shuts down fine though with the extra ram) does exhibit a completely different behavior when removing the new ram modules, ie it functions normally. Any advice much appreciated.

Well, thanks for the replies all, much appreciated. I'm at a bit of a loss to tell you the truth. Before installing the additional ram, I had a scenario where my pro would just reboot after shutting down. On one occasion it did this 3 times in a row. I have since done a fresh Leopard instal and it has only done it once since then. I think it could well be worth running disk warrior as you have suggested many times hatter. The problem is, I've blown any available cash right now on the ram! I am simply curios as to why the mac pro exhibits odd restart behavior with the additional ram installed? I did add the extra ram after the fresh instal, so, as mentioned here in a reply, this takes the OS to a different state? 64bit? I may have got the wrong end of the stick, sorry if thats the case. Should, now I have the additional ram installed do a fresh installation? Does Leopard configure itself differently when it sees above 4GB? I do have numerous bits of hardware hooked up to the mac and I specifically purchased a sonnet firewire and usb card to cater for both, however I guess that means nothing if the software is causing a conflict. I know for a fact one of the units causes the user event agent to fail, but this has been fixed and I am eagerly awaiting the release of the updated software. As you have probably gathered by now, I'm clutching at straws. The most annoying thing for me is that I have always maintained a reliable computer and can generally trouble shoot and cure problems, but this has got me, for now. Please keep them coming, I'm willing to try anything within reason to get a stable mac pro!! Hatter, you mentioned ram temperatures. The ram seems to get incredibly hot, like, burn your fingers hot. Could you suggests a good app or something to monitor the temperatures? Many thanks all.

  • Mac Mini i7 After Yosemite update, sleep mode affecting internet connection

    Hi,
I got a Mac Mini i7 for July 2014 everything was awesome.  On Monday, October 27th 2014, I notice the port where my Mac Mini is connected, the light is amber colour.  When this happens there's no internet connection for the Mac Mini and affects the router has it slows the connection.  After doing the following:
    1. Turn off Modem for 20mins (hard reset)
    2. Turn off Router for 20mins (hard reset)-Router Netgear WNDR4000
    3. Set Service Order
    4. Change Ethernet Cable
    5. Renew the DHCP
I found out the when the Mac Mini goes to sleep mode thats when connections drops.  I test where i set it to 1min and voila the port is now amber colour.
I don't want to keep the Mac Mini i7 in "never" status has it decrease life.
Put hard disk to sleep when possible and Wake for network access are checked.
Of course before the update, everything was working fine.  Any ideas is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Retsel Adrec

    Re-installing Yosemite fixed this problem.
    Thanks.

  • Macbook pro 2011 model freezes after software update

my macbook pro 2011 model freezes and does a continuous alarm sound after a software update.  i have taken it in twice, theyve changed the hard disk, they have done all tests but it still happens.

Run through the list of fixes here
Step by Step to fix your Mac

  • Freezes during software update install

Tried to install updates from prompt, clicked on re-start when asked, installing software update screen came up but is stuck at 2 min. remaining for the last hour.  Any ideas?  Thanks! (imac late 2012/Mountain lion OS 10.something....)

I don't think it's running the update at this point so you really don't have any choice but powering down.  And if it was a system update the odds are pretty high it isn't going to boot but you won't know until you try.
You should never do a system upgrade without haveing a backup of your system to revert to if something goes wrong.  If you don't have a backup to revert to you may have to reinstall the system and run the 10.6.8 combo updater to get back to 10.6.8.

  • Task Sequence Fails after Software Updates Install Step - Lenovo X240

    Hi All.
I'm having a strange issue trying to run an OSD on Lenovo X240 machines.
After the Software Update step, it reboots as expected, then exits the task sequence and sends you to the windows logon screen.
Review the SMSTS.log, it appears the reason is:
Found network adapter "Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260" with IP Address 0.0.0.0.
    TSMBootstrap 24/07/2014 15:07:10
    1824 (0x0720)
Found network adapter "Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I218-LM" with IP Address 0.0.0.0.
    TSMBootstrap 24/07/2014 15:07:10
    1824 (0x0720)
    Full log file:
    SMSTS.log
If I remove the Software Updates step, the task sequence completes without any problems.
Don't think it is a driver error, as above, every other step completes without issue. Other models use the same task sequence (including software updates step) without any problems.
    Any ideas? I'm completely stuck.
    Thanks!

Looks like I am deploying KB2965788 which requires two restarts.
    Thanks all for your help.
P.S. - I periodically update the base image with a build & capture to include the latest updates, so in the times between this I deploy the software updates as part of the task sequence.
I've found the offline servicing to be very flaky, have attempted to use it many times and found it either a) doesn't apply the updates to the image b) corrupts the image.

  • After Software Updates Applied Mac Mini Freezes after little use

Yesterday I let the computer run updates, now after a short period of use the computer desktop goes to an hour glass and I have to reboot to get control back. Even terminal sessions are frozen. Only Apple software installed on the computer, except for PostgreSQL, Sonos and Mozy. I deinstalled Mozy but that did not help.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I wonder if its a virus?
whatever it is that plagues your machine, i certainly isn't a virus - there aren't any for Mac !
however, i'm running out of options. the only other thing i can think of would be a complete re-installation of Mac OS. if that doesn't fix your mini, and if it's still under warranty, i would start planing a trip to Apple.
before embarking on that path, be sure you're well baked up. if you don't have a spare, get an external HD (USB or, better yet, firewire) and use e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner to bootably clone your startup disk. a current TM backup would also do (but i recommend both).
maybe another user has a better idea. best of luck in any case !

  • Mac Mini crash after Mountain Lion install!

I just tried to update my wife's MacMini to Mountain Lion and when it went through the first restart, it never came back up. I checked to see if it was the monitor after searching here for a while, I am using a Samsung TV coming off the HDMI port. I plugged in a regular monitor to the mini display port and still nothing. I tried to do a hard restart after letting it sit for about 10 min and now it sounds like the hard drive is barely spinning up. Anybody have any ideas?

Oh. You are so in jail.
Plug the mini straight into the wall power supply.
You do have 4 - 8GB memory installed, right?
Disconnect everything but power and the display port to regular monitor connection. Make sure that external monitor is switched to the type of connection: DVI, HDMI, VGA. Wrong setting and your mini could be booted up sneering at you from behind a dark screen.
    Boot mini.
    Any change?

  • Powerbook freezing after software update

I have a Powerbook G4 17" that has been rock solid for two years--it has never had this problem before.
Last week, after installing "AirPort Update 2005-001 (1.0)", the machine has been freezing (with frozen cursor) at least once per day during random work, for example, while using Word, Final Draft, or browsing the web with various browsers. Most annoyingly, it often happens while I'm simply reading the screen and not even causing any action to occur. I haven't installed any applications for the last few weeks. No maintenance or upgrades have occurred other than automatic updates.
Normally, I would suspect RAM in a random crashing incident, but this machine has 2GB of Apple RAM that has been installed the entire time and has never had any issues. I've run Rembra RAM checker against it just to be sure, and it reports no problems.
I've gone through the logs to see if there's anything posted, but the freeze apparently locks the machine up solid--there's no indications in the logs except normal activity from the subsequent reboot.
Just to be thorough, I ran a verify permissions and verify disk, but both were clean.
I'm extremely frustrated about this. Is there any way to roll back or remove this update?
    Matt

Okay, turns out it's the lower RAM slot that has suddenly gone wonky. The Machine is stable with just 1 RAM module in the upper slot, and both modules work in the upper slot. The machine has the crashing problem with either module in the lower slot.
Is anyone else having this problem after updating to OS X 10.4.3?

  • Force software reboots after Software Updates install, and do a WUA rescan upon reboot and install any remaining patches?

Running SCCM 2007 SP2 R3 and having two big issues with SUP that impacted us severely with the February patches.  An RDP patch from November broke our 2-factor authentication (2FA) method, so we stopped deployment until Microsoft could fix the
patch.  Rather than fixing the patch...they made a patch for the patch.
We divided our servers up into multiple Day/Time maintenance windows, like SUN, MON, TUE, and from 0200 to 0600 AM, and we run deployments weekly as needed.
There doesn't seem to be a way in SUP to "let SCCM control reboot" and ALWAYS reboot (whether the patches request it or not), and, as a result, we seem to have an awful lot of servers that are stuck at "reboot pending" after patch installation,
and have actually taken to using a third-party program to reboot the servers.
There also doesn't seem to be a way to force SCCM SUP to rescan the computer after the patch is applied until after a day...or, for servers, a week (from Mon to Mon, for example).
What happened this time around was that the first patch installed and broke 2FA, the second patch is not recognized as being needed until after a reboot and rescan--since that did not occur, it took up to a week to get the second patch installed (IF the
server ever was rebooted), which...was unacceptable.
    Soooo...how can I:
         1.  ALWAYS force SCCM to reboot after patching (60-min countdown if user logged-on), just like we do with our normal deployment advertisement, package, program.
         2.  Force a WUA scan after this reboot, so, if remaining patches from this patch group are needed, they get detected and installed, and hopefully this will all work within the 4-hour window (we might be able to extend it earlier,
    but, not past 0600).
    Thanks!

Thanks, Don.  OK, if there is a "reboot required" returned at the end of the patch deployment...shouldn't the computer then reboot?  We see a large number of computers with "reboot required" that never reboot.  Is there something wrong in
the setup to stop a reboot from occurring?
    Thanks.
It looks like you've continued the conversation with Jason and it's taken an interesting turn ;)
But, in the case where a reboot_required is the returned resultcode, CCM will look to your MW and deployment settings, and the context of the installation event (enforcement etc), to determine if the reboot request should be honoured or refused.
You should be able to see all the to-and-fro of this logic within the client logfiles, as it's occurring (or after the event).
If you do some spelunking into the logfiles, don't forget to look at windowsupdate.log (the WUAgent logfile), as that can, with the CCM logfiles, paint a more complete picture of the "flow of things".
This does all assume that the client machine is in a healthy and predictable state to begin with.
If there is already some other pending_reboot hiding in the background, or, WUAgent is running with it's own configuration (potentially fighting with CCM), or, it's Win8 with the "Automatic Maintenance" scheduled task, you can get some unexpected behaviour
(but usually that is unexpected reboot, rather than unexpected no-reboot)

  • How to remove preinstalled files of adobe photoshop from my mac mini so that i can install a new version of the same software. The previous version was removed using the app cleaner software.Could not continue installation bcoz of earlier files

How to remove preinstalled files of adobe photoshop from my mac mini so that i can install a new version of the same software. The previous version was removed using the app cleaner software.Could not continue installation of the new version because of the existance of files from the previous version.plz help

What "app cleaner software" ? I ask because installing Photoshop over a previous version has never been a problem. Perhaps your difficulty stems from another source, eg. "cleaner software" ?
If you look in your hard drive, at the root level there is a Library. In there is a folder called Application Support, and in that you will find a folder called Adobe. Files from your previous version are there.
However, I urge you to call Adobe support to make sure you are not doing anything that would mess up other Adobe applications.
