Mac Mini freezes during log out
Hello everyone,
I have a Mac Mini among many other MACs, all running 10.5.8. It has two accounts: an Admin and a user one.
A couple of weeks ago, I encountered a quite disturbing _freeze on this machine only_: each time I try to logout from the user account, the desktop disappears, followed with a blue screen and a rotating dial; after a while the rotating dial stops and the computer freezes. The only workaround so far is to hard reboot the Mac.
I run Onyx 2.0.5 systematically; nothing seems to be wrong.
I have carried out such a logout every week for maintenance purposes, since the machine was bought early 2008; I never faced this problem until recently. I did not install any additional software in the meantime, although I keep the existing ones up-to-date. Also note that the user account does not freeze if I just turn the Mac Mini off from the menu bar.
Any ideas welcome, before I consider rebuilding the whole system.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
To whom it may concern, I finally fixed the problem.
I use a Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse on the Mac Mini. It seems that the Logitech Control Center 3.1 interacts poorly with Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Now that I have disabled LCCDaemon in the start-up items of all users, I can logout from any session seamlessly. In addition, it appears that login is faster than before.
I hope that it helps someone else!

Mac mini freezes regularly - log file enclosed - what do I need to do?
Hi,
My mini crashes every couple of days - and has to be rebooted. I've been updating the OS and software regularly but it continues to freeze and has to be rebooted each time. I'm enclosing a typical log file from a crash. Any help / insight about what to do to fix this would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Jay

Mac mini freezes and then screen fragments
Our Mac Mini freezes up constantly. Some days it happens after a few minutes of running and other times after a few hors. After the computer freezes, the screen fragments. We seem to have enough memory and so not certain what the problem could be.
AKSHi AKS,
Maybe you have got a temperature problem affected Mac Mini as our Mac Mini Server. You can read about it here:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/13242219#13242219
Such problems sometimes gets worse by time so I suggest you should run the EFI test and then contact Apple service before running out of guarantee.
Good luck!

Mac Mini freezes at startup for both mac and windows. Any Ideas?
Mac Mini freezes at startup for both mac and windows. Any Ideas?
Thanks for getting back so quickly. But, it worked. I did what you said and now it works doing a normal boot to in both Windows and Mac. I wonder what went wrong, as both operating systems didn't boot (I tried numerous times).
Anyway, thanks. -

[email protected]Did you ever find a resolutution to your issue? I have a similar issue after installing Mavericks where the Arris modem goes to sleep when my iMac does, even though other devices on the network are actively requesting data. For the time being, as long as the iMac doesn't sleep the network is fine.

Mac Mini 2011 screen blacks out during heavy screen activity
I have a Mac Mini 2011 i5 2.3Ghz with Intel HD video. It's connected to a 30" LCD 2560x1600 (Dell WFP3008) via mini-DP to DP cable and a 22" LCD 1920x1080 (Samsung LCD TV) via HDMI to HDMI cable.
For the first few weeks I had it connected to the 30" only and it was fine. Then I hooked up the Samsung as a second display and the problems started.
The problem is that the Dell blacks out briefly, then comes back. It is not "drawing" the screen black, the signal to the Dell gets disrupted momentarily so the monitor has no signal so it goes black. Then it resyncs with the signal and the display is back. This only happens to the Dell, during the disruption, the Samsung image stays put. I know it is a signal disruption because the Dell shows a displayport icon showing that it has just resynced to that input.
The problem happens more frequently when more things are going on; like if I have a window or multiple windows playing video, then the disruption happens more. If I disconnect the Samsung, it happens less. It could even happen if a web browser window taking up a large portion of the 30" screen does a full page update, it will disrupt. If I am running Adobe Lightroom, it seems to happen more also.
When it happens it seems like messages like this appear in the console, although i can't say they are directly correlated:
6/1/12 8:28:46.000 PM kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero
I'm thinking perhaps the mini is running low on memory since the 2560x1600 is pretty high res and then add the 1080p screen and stuff being updated, perhaps it runs out of memory and disrupts the signal while it garbage collects? Pure speculation.
Has anybody else seen this and have any clues on how to resolve it? Thanks.I should clarify that when I say perhaps the mini is running low on memory, I mean low on shared video memory, since the computer has 16GB installed. I'm not sure how to view or test shared video memory allocation.

Mid 2011 Mac MIni Freezing with OSX 10.8.2
My Mid 2011 Mac Mini running OS X 10.8.2 has been Freezing (The baloon spins often) over random things. Is there a scan I can do to check problems. This is my first experience with a Mac and thought they weren't supposed to freeze. I run a few programs at a time but I do have 8g of ram with 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5.
The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
So, I recently bought a refurbished Mac Mini, late 2009 model. It worked fine for the first few months, but after moving back to school, it started acting oddly. First, it had problems booting. It would freeze up during the boot up, or occasionally right after if finished booting. After messing around with it, it started working fairly reliably again. However, every once in a while, under moderate use, it would freeze up and would have problems restarting. I came to the realization that it was probably overheating, and tried a few tricks to get more air to it. This worked…
For a while. Last week, it died. It would get to the gray screen with the spinning wheel, and then freeze. It couldn't get past this step. In desperation, I took it into the Apple store, as it was still under warranty. After several days, they fixed it, but in the process, had to replace the hard drive. Luckily, I had a back up. Reset the computer, reloaded the back up, and started to use it… only to have it freeze again.
I noticed that every time it crashed, it seemed abnormally hot. I think this may be an overheating issue, and I have taken steps to monitor it (I currently have a temperature monitor watching over the CPU temperature). I just wanted to know what other people thought.
My current set up is thus:
Late 2009 Model Mac Mini, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Dual monitors, connected via adapters to the Mini-display port and mini-DVI port
Ethernet internet (limited wireless here in the dorms)
Apple keyboard and Logitech mouse
Verbatim external hard drive, 320 GB, connected via Firewire 400/800 cable
My current thoughts are that it's either due to the dual monitors stressing out the video card, or the external hard drive. I've noticed that the external hard drive is constantly on when it's plugged in to the computer (it gets it's power via the firewire cable), and that if I leave the external drive plugged in overnight, the computer can occasionally act sluggishly.
If anyone has any further insight into this or can verify my hypothesis, that would be great. Thank you for your time. After looking around online some more, found that there are many complaints with this specific hard drive. The main issue, it seems, is that it has limited ventilation, and therefore has issues staying cool. Unfortunately, due to the length of my firewire cord, the external hard drive typically has to sit fairly close to the Mini, usually resting on top of it. So, if this is right, then it's the poorly designed external HD overheating, which in turn overheats the Mini to the point of failure. I'll look into getting a better external to replace this one, and for the time being I'll only have it connected for brief periods for backup.

Wireless keyboard stopped working caps lock light does not come on but on mac mini unable to log in
Any help out there would be appreciated. Never had this problem before until now.. Mac mini was asleep. pressed space bar on keyboard.. machine woke up now i can't type anything. restarted the machine and now i can't log in. can only do it through my mbp with screen sharing.
For troubleshooting and emergency booting where BT may not
work, a wired USB keyboard is recommended, as spare/backup.
A windows keyboard can be OK to use, if you don't have one
and end up borrowing one from a neighbor, see link to compare.
If you are familiar with windows or also use BootCamp, there
is an article about keyboard use and mapping those k/b here:
•BootCamp: About keyboards and key assignment for MS Windows
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5636
I've almost always had at least one extra, new or spare keyboard.
Good luck! -
Mac mini freezes on start up?? ANY SUGEGSTIONS??
My mac mini seems to freeze as it's starting up. The power comes on, I hear the start up chime, and it goes to the screen with the apple sign and the loading circle, but then it just freezes and won't move on from there.
I've tried turning the power on, while holding the command, alt, p and r keys, which I read on another forum, but that didn't do anything.
Does anyone have anyone suggestions?? Thanks! When Disk Utility reports 'error on exit in a situation such as that, it means there are errors on the drive it cannot repair. Occasionally (very rarely) running the Repair Disk task again will complete the repair successfully, so that's worth doing just in case. Typically however at that point you basically have two options: either buy a third-party disk utility such as Alsoft's DiskWarrior and attempt a repair to the drive and data structure that way, or perform a full 'erase and install' of MacOS using the original MacOS installer that came with the system, or a full retail MacOS installer issues subsequent to the release of the specific Mac model you're using (meaning you can't generally use a MacOS installer which pre dates the system).
Since the latter option involves reformatting the drive, it should only be done once any and all critical data has been backed up or recovered from the drive - though in the event of many of these type of errors, data on the drive can be significantly corrupt, and so recovery may not yield much in the way of positive results.
A copy of DiskWarrior (or Tech Tools Pro) will cost around $100. If you can't afford that and either don't need any data already saved on the drive or have a backup, then by returning to the MacOS installer screen, you can select erase and install by clicking the customize option. Since this process reformats the drive, it basically wipes the error Disk Utility couldn't fix and returns the mini to the same condition it was when it came out of the box, so you'll then go through the initial setup screens again. -
MAC MINI BLOCKED AND PASS OUT THE OPENING SESSION SCREEN
Hi, i hope someone can help me.
(i'm a french user, so i'll try to write a good english)
I've a mac MINI (2006) Intel Core Solo
Mac OSX 10.4.11 Tiger
I've no problem since some days.
I'm not the usual user.
Is the problem description :
• I start my Mac mini by pressing the button.
• "dong"
• I see the apple on the screen with spiral progression, all right.
• after around 15 sec. normally, at this moment, the opening session screen must appear… (there are 2 users, one administrator [with password] and one guest without password) but it don't.
• After a brief flash between two different screens (blue-gray),
the gray screen with the apple and the spiral progression re-appear but BLOCKED.
• There are some pixels lost in disorder at the top-left of the screen (the place of the starting mouse-arrow).
• After some minutes, or when i click away (i really don't now exactly when…)
The session of the guest starting normally (with some slownesses)
• I've a AirPort connexion with an iMac (Leopard 10.5.5).
• I've noted that someday, my usual network connexion have been changed (on the mac mini only), and my Mini tryed to connect with the connection of a neighbor.
As if this connexion have been selected by default.
•• I've tryed to restart, close the session etc.
•• I've lunched the disc utility to verify the HD…
•• And finally, I've passed out the problem with changing the account parameters :
Open the session automaticaly as a guest. Passed out but not resolved !!
••• THE PROBLEM STILL HERE, but for a few seconds only
(blocking lasts only two seconds).
So, can someone help me ?
What type of problem can it be ?
I hope someone has allready resolved it !
Thanks for reading.Hi you, i love your post…
So, i suggest you :
- In the account parameters (in préf. sys.)
- Delete the guest account created.
- Specify start automatically as "your Admin. name"
- Restart your computer.
- Go one more time in the Account param. pane
- Create a new guest account and modify some settings (such as display of the file for users in opening session screen etc.)
- Specify automatic start with guest
- Restart you Mac Mini.
Of course you have note that i've solved (for the moment only ?) the problem.
But i must say it for others, if someone has the same pb.
When my Mac Mini was Blocked, in fact, the computer seems all right but the display not. As the opening session screen was behind this static grey-apple-screen.
In addition, i've forgotten that there is an other screen with
"Démarrage de Mac OS X en cours…"
So, when i've unplugged my screen during the blocked screen,
and re-plugged it, all returns right : i can see my opening session screen…
So, if some one can tell me what is the problem exactly…
I'm curious.
So, at this moment, i've started my Mini once time only.
I hope all stay right in future…
Thanks so munch to me for my response.

Hi everybody!
It seemed to me that a device connected to an inverter does not spontaneously extinguished, unless said inverter no longer load!
However, there was a break of about 1 to 2 minutes during the night. And I find my mac mini off, I mean off! not in pause! while the monitor itself is paused.
And I had to restart 2 times because the first time it did not recognize my password!
So can somebody tell me if it's "normal" or if there's a bug somewhere?
ThanksDaddy is right - my advice to customers has always been to use no more than 85% to 90% of their drive's capacity in OS X. Now that we are getting to the point where a 250GB drive is the norm, I'm starting to think about revising that advice a bit but still, there's good reason for it.
OS X is constantly creating, revision, and deleting caches. Temporary files are created and later deleted. Virtual Memory swaps files in and out as your program use overloads the mount of RAM you have. There's lots going on in the background and when your drive gets close to full it slows things down. And the closer you come to filling the drive, the harder it is for OS X to automatically keep disk fragmentation to a minimum which can further slow it down. -
HT3964 Mac mini stuck after logging in
Please help. After i enter the logging information, the Mac mini got stuck and wouldn't proceed. It freezes after I enter my log in infor. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks. My start up hard drive is full, could this be the reason?
Try restarting your Mac Mini in safe mode (holding down the shift key while restarting) then log in, if you are able to log in then start deleting files you don't need, you should try to keep 10% or more of your hard drive as free space. If you need all of your data then try moving it to an external hard drive then delete the data on your Mac Mini hard drive. After you are finish restart your Mac normally then log in.

I have a PPC Mac Mini and quite regularly when I return to it, after the display has gone to sleep, I can not get it to wake. Also it is making a fan noise, not a screech or anything, but it sounds like it does when it is doing some major processing. The only way to use it from there on out is to hold down the power button until it turns off and then power it back up.
Any ideas of what would cause this?
Where should I start in determining what is wrong with it and how to fix it?There are many possible causes of the symptoms you describe, so it may be fairly difficult to separate the potential culprits! However, one of the odd behaviors I have seen from one of my PPC minis is a failure to wake from sleep accompanied by the fan running at higher than usual speeds. It has only happened twice in over two years, so I can't say it's 'normal' in any way! However, sleep issues are not all that unusual, and are often associated with external devices or their drivers. In this instance therefore, I would suggest you disconnect everything and see if you can replicate the wake failure and fan behavior with no external devices attached - other than screen and mouse.
In broad terms, I would generally suggest you do a range of housekeeping on the system at this point to eliminate a number of stray possibilities. Permissions, prebinding, cache files, logs etc can all contribute to this sort of behavior. The easiest way to deal with the majority of these possibilities is to download a copy of YASU from http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/ and set it to perform all tasks, then exit any other running application and let it complete and reboot the system. That will often resolve these sorts of problems if they are not externally caused. If that doesn't fix it, at least you will have given your system a bit of a 'spring clean'! -
Why does my mac mini shutdown during sleep mode?
After I put the Mini into sleep mode, it shuts itself off after a few hours. I tried resetting the SMC per instructions from another forum post (turn the Mini off; pull the power cord for 10 seconds; plug back in; wait 5 seconds; turn the Mini back on) but that didn't work. Anything else I can try?
Thanks,
iBob52I have the same problem. When only the screen is sleeping, everything is ok. When the MacMini begins to sleep, he just shuts off. Help someone ?
