Mac Mini Freezing

In the last few days my Late 2009 Mac Mini with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard installed has begun to freeze after a few hours of no activity.  I have set the computer to never go to sleep as I thought that was maybe the problem. But it did freeze again. It freezes when I leave the computer unattended for an hour or so but has not frozen while I am using it.  I just reset the SMC (System Management Controller) by shutting down and then unplugging the computer for 30 seconds or so.  I am hoping maybe that is the problem. Anyone have any ideas on why this might be happening and how to fix the problem I would greatly appreciate!
Thanks!
Jeff

Hi Jeffrey,
What all is connected to it, especially USB wise?

Mac Mini freezes at startup for both mac and windows. Any Ideas?

Thanks for getting back so quickly. But, it worked. I did what you said and now it works doing a normal boot to in both Windows and Mac. I wonder what went wrong, as both operating systems didn't boot (I tried numerous times).
    Anyway, thanks.

  • Mac mini freezes and then screen fragments

Our Mac Mini freezes up constantly. Some days it happens after a few minutes of running and other times after a few hors. After the computer freezes, the screen fragments. We seem to have enough memory and so not certain what the problem could be.

    Hi AKS,
Maybe you have got a temperature problem affected Mac Mini as our Mac Mini Server. You can read about it here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13242219#13242219
Such problems sometimes gets worse by time so I suggest you should run the EFI test and then contact Apple service before running out of guarantee.
    Good luck!

Did you ever find a resolutution to your issue? I have a similar issue after installing Mavericks where the Arris modem goes to sleep when my iMac does, even though other devices on the network are actively requesting data. For the time being, as long as the iMac doesn't sleep the network is fine.

  • Mac Mini Freezing Issues

So, I recently bought a refurbished Mac Mini, late 2009 model. It worked fine for the first few months, but after moving back to school, it started acting oddly. First, it had problems booting. It would freeze up during the boot up, or occasionally right after if finished booting. After messing around with it, it started working fairly reliably again. However, every once in a while, under moderate use, it would freeze up and would have problems restarting. I came to the realization that it was probably overheating, and tried a few tricks to get more air to it. This worked…
For a while. Last week, it died. It would get to the gray screen with the spinning wheel, and then freeze. It couldn't get past this step. In desperation, I took it into the Apple store, as it was still under warranty. After several days, they fixed it, but in the process, had to replace the hard drive. Luckily, I had a back up. Reset the computer, reloaded the back up, and started to use it… only to have it freeze again.
I noticed that every time it crashed, it seemed abnormally hot. I think this may be an overheating issue, and I have taken steps to monitor it (I currently have a temperature monitor watching over the CPU temperature). I just wanted to know what other people thought.
My current set up is thus:
Late 2009 Model Mac Mini, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Dual monitors, connected via adapters to the Mini-display port and mini-DVI port
Ethernet internet (limited wireless here in the dorms)
    Apple keyboard and Logitech mouse
Verbatim external hard drive, 320 GB, connected via Firewire 400/800 cable
My current thoughts are that it's either due to the dual monitors stressing out the video card, or the external hard drive. I've noticed that the external hard drive is constantly on when it's plugged in to the computer (it gets it's power via the firewire cable), and that if I leave the external drive plugged in overnight, the computer can occasionally act sluggishly.
If anyone has any further insight into this or can verify my hypothesis, that would be great. Thank you for your time.

After looking around online some more, found that there are many complaints with this specific hard drive. The main issue, it seems, is that it has limited ventilation, and therefore has issues staying cool. Unfortunately, due to the length of my firewire cord, the external hard drive typically has to sit fairly close to the Mini, usually resting on top of it. So, if this is right, then it's the poorly designed external HD overheating, which in turn overheats the Mini to the point of failure. I'll look into getting a better external to replace this one, and for the time being I'll only have it connected for brief periods for backup.

  • Mac mini freezes regularly - log file enclosed - what do I need to do?

    Hi,
My mini crashes every couple of days - and has to be rebooted. I've been updating the OS and software regularly but it continues to freeze and has to be rebooted each time. I'm enclosing a typical log file from a crash. Any help / insight about what to do to fix this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Mac mini freezes on start up?? ANY SUGEGSTIONS??

My mac mini seems to freeze as it's starting up. The power comes on, I hear the start up chime, and it goes to the screen with the apple sign and the loading circle, but then it just freezes and won't move on from there.
I've tried turning the power on, while holding the command, alt, p and r keys, which I read on another forum, but that didn't do anything.
Does anyone have anyone suggestions?? Thanks!

When Disk Utility reports 'error on exit in a situation such as that, it means there are errors on the drive it cannot repair. Occasionally (very rarely) running the Repair Disk task again will complete the repair successfully, so that's worth doing just in case. Typically however at that point you basically have two options: either buy a third-party disk utility such as Alsoft's DiskWarrior and attempt a repair to the drive and data structure that way, or perform a full 'erase and install' of MacOS using the original MacOS installer that came with the system, or a full retail MacOS installer issues subsequent to the release of the specific Mac model you're using (meaning you can't generally use a MacOS installer which pre dates the system).
Since the latter option involves reformatting the drive, it should only be done once any and all critical data has been backed up or recovered from the drive - though in the event of many of these type of errors, data on the drive can be significantly corrupt, and so recovery may not yield much in the way of positive results.
A copy of DiskWarrior (or Tech Tools Pro) will cost around $100. If you can't afford that and either don't need any data already saved on the drive or have a backup, then by returning to the MacOS installer screen, you can select erase and install by clicking the customize option. Since this process reformats the drive, it basically wipes the error Disk Utility couldn't fix and returns the mini to the same condition it was when it came out of the box, so you'll then go through the initial setup screens again.

  • Mac mini freezes after software update install in leopard

    hello,
ever since i purchased my mac mini 8 months ago, it freezes when installing a software update that requires a restart. it seems to get through the whole process, but then freezes with the default galaxy desktop (even though that is no longer my desktop) with nothing else on the screen. i have even tried doing installs over night, but it is still hanging at the galaxy screen when i wake up in the morning.
unfortunately i did not deal with this when i still had my warranty and would like to avoid purchasing apple care.
    any ideas? thanks so much!

I have exactly the same problem. My mac-mini was purchased only a few months ago. I downloaded the most recent update recommended by software update. I don't remember everything that was in the update but it included several files providing support for various digital cameras and iphoto. My mac mini is frozen showing only a white screen.

  • Mac Mini freezes during log out

    Hello everyone,
I have a Mac Mini among many other MACs, all running 10.5.8. It has two accounts: an Admin and a user one.
A couple of weeks ago, I encountered a quite disturbing _freeze on this machine only_: each time I try to logout from the user account, the desktop disappears, followed with a blue screen and a rotating dial; after a while the rotating dial stops and the computer freezes. The only workaround so far is to hard reboot the Mac.
I run Onyx 2.0.5 systematically; nothing seems to be wrong.
I have carried out such a logout every week for maintenance purposes, since the machine was bought early 2008; I never faced this problem until recently. I did not install any additional software in the meantime, although I keep the existing ones up-to-date. Also note that the user account does not freeze if I just turn the Mac Mini off from the menu bar.
Any ideas welcome, before I consider rebuilding the whole system.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

To whom it may concern, I finally fixed the problem.
I use a Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse on the Mac Mini. It seems that the Logitech Control Center 3.1 interacts poorly with Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Now that I have disabled LCCDaemon in the start-up items of all users, I can logout from any session seamlessly. In addition, it appears that login is faster than before.
I hope that it helps someone else!

  • 2010 Mac Mini freezing on USB activity

A long-time Mac user client of mine bought a Mac Mini in August, It ran faultlessly until early in October when it began to freeze, most frequently when Time Machine was doing its thing with an external, USB-connected, hard drive.
Ten days I took it to an Apple dealer who ran the extended Mac Mini test suite without any hiccups. Returned from dealer and the Mini still froze, usually (always?) with USB activity.
Dealer replaced the HD and I retrieved the Time Machine backup, giving it back to the owner on Oct. 23.
No freezing for the first four days, but on Wednesday I got this message from the owner:
"Unfortunately I have to report that my computer froze on me again a few
minutes ago. I was opening (or trying to open) a Word document while the
backup was going on ... Maybe that's the problem?
I saw white streaks on the screen, and then the **** thing froze ..."
This morning (Friday) he tells me that the memory stick he also uses as a backup and to move files to an old iBook has been corrupted by the Mac mini: not readable by an original mac mini, the iBook or the new Mac Mini.
As it's a 120-mile round-trip for me, some suggestions as to where I should go from here would be welcome. One thing I am doing is taking a FireWire cable with me to connect the external Time Machine drive to see whether it really is a USB problem.

Thank you, Boece, for your thoughtful comments and suggestions.
Briefly, yes it's a new aluminum mini with only Apple installed RAM without a UPS. The backup drive is a Seagate 3.5" in a generic, powered, enclosure with both USB2 and Firewire capabilities. The enclosure does not allow the drive to spin down. A hub is used, but only to connect a printer and, very occasionally a digital camera. Hadn't thought about USB cables, but might give that a shot. The client also uses a USB-based wireless keyboard and mouse. As for changes coinciding with the onset of the problems, nothing other than whatever Snow Leopard updates there were at the time.
After creating this morning's original post, I took a cable to the client's house and attached the external drive using firewire. I also detached the wireless keyboard and mouse's USB transmitter, substituting just a regular Apple keyboard and mouse. After a re-boot I ran the Time Machine backup without any signs of freezing, and I got report tonight saying that the computer is back running without issues and that Time Machine has worked without any glitches.
While I'm not at all confident that the problems have gone away, it does seem to point to a USB-related issue, but whether that's at the board level or at the cable/device level is yet to be determined.

Do you, or have you ever had, any software installed or running in the foreground or background (Login Items!) that could have the tiniest little bit to do with Bluetooth? Like the driver SW for a BT headset or so?
Anything else non-Apple that could be dealing with I/O gear or services? Drivers or software for USB peripherals, like printers, formerly used mouse, anything?
Are you able to boot and access the Mini? If so, look around the hardware, former and present - connected or not, around your computer, go down your Applications folder and Login Item list, one by one, only non-Apple stuff is relevant.
Whatever you find, list it here, please with version number. Well, once you're at it, please check if it's the latest, more importantly ML-compatible versions. This will help, more via developer/manufacturer websites.
If you can't access your Mini any longer, there are ways, no worries, but more then.

  • Mac Mini Freezing (graphics problem, I think?)

    Hello everyone,
I'm a new Mac Mini owner and my experience so far has been great, but my machine is freezing (jittery blue artifacts/boxes/glitchy lines) and becoming unresponsive when I do the following:
Rotating  in Manga Studio 5 OR Photoshop CS6
Zooming/panning in Google Maps in Chrome
    My Mac Mini is:
    2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz) with 3MB L3 cache
    8 GB (two 2GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory
    500 GB (5400-rpm) hard drive
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
I have OSX Mavericks installed and both Manga Studio, Photoshop and Chrome are all up-tp-date. I've searched previous posts and couldn't find anything that seemed relevant, so my apologies if this has been asked before and I just missed it. Seems like a graphics issue, I think. There are no drivers to update, right?
    Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure it is your graphics card since works fine on my 2012 Mini but I have 16GB RAM which then provides more for the graphics 4000 to use and also I7 processor.  The graphics 4000 is better than many believe.  I use it for video editing and no issues.  I also have an SSD but so not sure that is the reason.

  • Mid 2011 Mac MIni Freezing with OSX 10.8.2

My Mid 2011 Mac Mini running OS X 10.8.2 has been Freezing (The baloon spins often) over random things.  Is there a scan I can do to check problems.  This is my first experience with a Mac and thought they weren't supposed to freeze.  I run a few programs at a time but I do have 8g of ram with 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Mac Mini freezes up

I bought a Mac Mini 3 days ago, and i connected it to a 22 inches (PC Monitor). It freezes pretty much everytime I try to click on something. I have to hold down the power button to turn it off and reboot it. . . What could be wrong?  I installed an SSD hoping it would solve the problem, but didn't.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.
I didn't buy it directly from Apple. I bought it from Best Buy in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

  • My Zen Touch plays some of my Mp3's in slow motion (they play fine on my PC), what's the probl

I don't know how to explain it other than it sounds like it's playing in slow motion or at half speed, is this a problem with the Zen Touch or with the mp3's? The mp3's play fine on my PC so I'm thinking it has to be the Zen. Any suggestions?
