Mac Mini Fusion Drive constantly running...

Hey does anyone have an experience similar to mine? Basically I can hear the mac mini constantly running, as in the hard drive is constantly reading/writing something. It is like a rhythmic reading/writing every 5 seconds or so. This also happens with no programs running. Is this a trait of the fusion drive at first? I don't want to wear out the hard drive prematurely, so if anyone knows something I can check to see what is going on... I have Crashplan installed on it, but that wouldn't cause this issue I'd assume. Is it still moving programs and files between the two drives? Seems a bit weird considering the computer is normally sitting idle for hours and I can hear the hard drive working at something almost all the time.

I booted into safe mode, opened up Activity Monitor and it shows that out of 16GB of RAM installed, ONLY 1GB is free. 14.11GB is Wired, and 14.98GB is being used. When I look at the monitor window and sort by real memory being used, the top one is kernal_task, using just 258MB. So what could be going on here? Since it is in safe mode, downloading a tool like Onyx most likely wouldn't work because almost everything isn't being used, or am I incorrect? What else can be done?

Programs repeatedly crashing on my late 2012 Mac Mini Fusion Drive

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini Fusion Drive 2.6ghz, 16gig RAM running Mac OSX 10.9.4 . For the past week or so I have had a number of programs - both Apple and third party apps crash repeatedly, I have repaired permissions and restarted numerous times but nothing seems to fix it. For example Mail would crash each time I cancelled a password being accepted by Mail in a particular account, Safari has crashed for various reasons. Apple Motion has also crashed more times in the past day or so than it ever has in the past year. It's crashing when I try to add a point or node to a line in an animation I'm finishing.
Does anybody have any idea why this is happening now and does anybody know how to fix it?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
          SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
          DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Mac Mini fusion drive churning/thrashing

My new Mac mini, while running quietly for several weeks, now has a fusion drive that is churning/thrashing continuously. It's not Time Machine. It's not Splotligh. It's not anything that reigsters in the Activity Monitor. Disk Utility checks out. If I log out, it keeps churning. If I reboot, it keeps churning. I am running FileVault 2, and when I first turn the mini on and *before* I unlock the drive, it's churning--so it's apparently a hadrware-level issue. This has been going on for hours.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I've had a Mac Mini for 10 days now with 1Tb Fusion drive. It has been silent until yesterday and then it starts making a similar noise to the one described by Bill in the OP.
Not sure what CoreStorage Driver is but wouldn't I expect to have heard this from the beginning. I installed a lot of software in the first 10 days but wasn't doing much apart from browsing Safari yesterday and then I noticed the noise, which appears to be unrelated to any activity I'm doing on the system.
So does this CoreStorage Driver optimise at seemingly random times ?

How will this work with Logic? It seems that Fusion drive will have a threshold, that prioritises most used applications.
But how will it differ from app. and content? More Q´s than answers.
What we do know: The new 21.5" iMacs will be 5400 rpm, only.
So the Mini seems to be best offer right now?

I am contemplating to buy a Mac Mini i7 2.6GHz but don't really know what I want to do with the Harddrive. One option would of course be to add a Fusion Drive for 200 bucks. However, apple doesn't say anything about the brand or model that they use for the SSD's which is a bit upsetting. Another option would be to go with the basic 1TB hard drive and replace it with a really good SSD (also around 200), or the third option would be to perhaps create your own Fusion Drive by going with the basic 1TB hard drive and simply add a SSD.
Any suggestions, recommendations, potential problems of eacht etc?

I have used a Fusion drive (120GB Intel SSD + 500GB HDD) which worked really well, handled all the file movement between the SSD and HDD and made a Mini fast. I added the SSD myself using a dual drive kit (with tools) from iFixit.com.
I would go with the idea of purchasing a 3rd party SSD (Samsung, Crucial, OWC), a dual drive kit from either iFixit.com or OWC (Macsales.com) then install it yourself. Both iFixit.com and Macsales.com have excellent guides on how to do this. With OS X Mavericks you'll be able to have the OS create a Fusion drive or you can manage the drives independently.

Mavericks won't install on newest mac mini fusion drive

Mavericks won't install on that drive. I get this message:

Well, I did that, up to "choose the partition tab." Then it says "you may only split this partition into two. To do this, click +."
I did that, and there were two partitions. the only option left is to select apply, which I didn't.
The "options" were still greyed out.
So now what?

Lion creates a recovery area with a minimal version of OS X and it may be unable to do so due to use over the years, and possibly other resizing operations (Boot Camp). It could just need more space, if you only have less than 8gb free. Lion shuffles and merges the two systems when it upgrades. You can burn the image downloaded from App Store by finding the dmg file inside the "Install Mac OS X Lion.app" bundle, dragging it into disk utility, then burning from there.
Otherwise, you can appropriate a MBR/BIOS formatted 4GB thumbdrive, 8GB of either EFI or MBR/BIOS thumbdrive, flash storage device, or external hard drive, and format it, using the restore operation through disk utility to copy the contents of the installer disk to the media. Exposed via the alt key before the Apple logo, should show the bootable media, where you can format over the former installation.
As always, backup your files when upgrading. I recommend if your installion is over a year old to wipe and upgrade if you can't make otherwise the media bootable, using your 10.6 recovery dvd.
If you cannot find an external medium to backup your files before the upgrade, if you need to format via disk utility (Through 10.6 media), you can consider Dropbox as an option (2GB free account).
It's not uncommon for the partition to simply refuse operations, including upgrades and resizing.

Will my mac mini fusion drive work in a 2008 mac pro

Hello All,
I have a 2012 mac mini with a 1 TB fusion drive. I want to know if I can just remove the fusion drive from the mac mini and install it in a 2008 mac pro? Or does the mac pro need some special update for it to work.
I'm given the mac mini to my fiance and she doesn't need a fusion drive but I want to keep it and put it in a 2008 mac pro.

Humm... I'm having a hard time seeing any Pros in that maneuver.
1. It will void any warranty left including Apple Care on the Mac Mini.
2. If something goes wrong splitting the Mac Mini's Fusion setup, you will be on your own.
3. While it sounds OK now, at some point (sooner than later) the Mac Mini will come up short on Disk Space.
4. You will most likely have to reformat that drive to use it in the Mac Pro.
5. The Mac Pro will not benifit unless you have an SSD in it and do a new Fusion setup.
I'm sure there are others here, who could add to the list of Cons.

Mac mini fusion drive startup slow

Unfortunately my fusion drive was damaged and replaced by Apple service center. When I got it back it startup very slow, even slower than my white mac book.
Initially, I though it was not start up from SSD so I tried to select SSD as the start up disk. There are only one hard disk to select (bundled SSD and typical HDD and it showed a size of 1.1 TB). Is this normal to see only only one hard drive? I thought there should be 2 disc, SSD and normal HDD.
I also erased the disc and reinstalled the mountain lion, but it still start up slow.
Is there any configuration I have to do in order to make it boot up from SSD?

Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.

Apple themselves don't specify hard drive RPM because they buy a number of different drives, some apparently 4200 some apparently 5400.
It's no surprise that your retailer wants you to buy a G5 though, and is trying to upsell one based on the minis weaknesses - after all, they get more money from a G5 sale than from a mini. They may also be considering your planned use of Photoshop as a stumbling block to effective use of a mini, but the question really is what you intend to use Photoshop to do. If you're a hobbyist, the system is fine and will work more than adequately - particularly if you max out the RAM. If you're a professional user with pro-level expectations, then a mini likely wouldn't be sufficient, not so much due to the drive speed (powerbook users have run Photoshop verisons for years quite happily on what are predominently 4200rpm drives) but because for pro work, Photoshop needs a lot of hard drive space and a great deal of RAM.
On the basis of what you've posted, I'd say your retailer is more interested in their profit than your need. Chances are, if you run PS on the G4 listed in your profile, you're already running on a drive of similar general performance.

The license you have only covers one computer, and the install disks from one type of Mac will not work on another type. You need to buy another copy of Snow Leopard.

I'm thinking that you have a > Mac mini (Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications because the 2010 model's only have Core 2 Duo processors and the 2011 had the first i5 processor.
2 GB of RAM is the minimum requirement for Mountain Lion, but it's hardly enough to really enjoy doing anything else.

TDK brand of blank optical disk medium on my mac (super drive) is not reading the optical disk I put in there to burn to. The genius at the apple store put in a Memorex brand of optical disk medium and it worked. What is the consensus for buying blank medium that will work with the .mac MINI super drive it seems TDK doesn't work? What is the brand and type to go with?

You need a regular optical digital cable, often called a Toslink, with a 3.5 mm miniplug adapter on the Mac mini end. The port is a combo port. When you insert the optical cable's miniplug into the port, because it is a tiny bit longer than a regular 3.5 mm miniplug, it activates the digital audio. Usually the port's output is analog by default.
