Mac Mini Get's Warm/Hot to Touch When Powered OFF

Question...Does your Mac Mini become WARM or HOT to the touch especially in the rear and on the bottom when the Mini is completely powered down, but still plugged into an outlet?
I leave mine turned off when not around it for extended periods of time. I don't usually leave any computer on when I'm gone for a while. Anyhow this past Wed. I came home and went to turn it on. It was incredibly warm on the rear side with all the connectors and especially on the bottom, but this was before the machine was even turned on.
The external power supply was warm and there was nothing unusual about that.
This is the new 2.0ghz mini and I've had it for less than two weeks. Do all Mini's get warm like this when they are turned off???? Cause that's really weird.

Please note that I was not quibbling with the characterization of your experiences - the early G5 iMac and iBook logic board issues alone are clear indications that sometimes Apple gets it wrong.
Whether lucky or not, I have not experienced these types of problems with Apple equipment, and along with my own systems I've bought and had responsibility for some thousands of them over the years - along with a fairly liberal dose of various PCs, and a probably similar lineup of earlier systems as you. I've found most to be reliable, and amongst all those, my 1986 vintage SE is still going strong, and one of my favorite systems is a late 1999 first generation G4 powermac which has run 24/7 since it was first unpacked - less a day for some upgrades to be fitted and the occasional update-derived reboot. My first-generation G5 DP has been superbly stable, never failing once, and it's a rare event that I get called to deal with a problematic Mac.
However, no number of positive experiences from others negates the negative you have experienced. The point is that for one side there is almost invariably a counterpoint. I must say, however, that if I had experienced a similar list of issues, I'd likely not have Apple written anywhere on my shopping list for future products - I suppose it speaks somewhat to the nature of the product when it works, that you're still a customer!
But still, all that aside, I would call Apple regarding the heating of the mini. That it might be warm to the touch after being off for a while would be expected, but I don't think it should show any greater signs of heat than that. Sadly I couldn't tell you for sure until early next week, since the one C2D we have is being kept busy! I will ask the user to shut it down at the end of the day however, and check it on Tuesday morning.

  • Saving Place When Powering Off Ipod Touch

When I turn off my ipod touch completely it always loses the song I was last on. This does not matter if I am playing a specific album or shuffling all songs. My other ipods (nano, mini, shuffle) always keep the place even when powered off. Is there a way to get the touch (2G) to save its spot?
I note it does save it if I only put it to sleep and not power off completely. if I am not using it for a couple of days, should I put putting it to sleep or powering it off?

The iPod is telling you to connect the iPod to your computer with iTunes.  When connected, iTunes should open and tell you what to do.  If it does not, you want to do is to restore the iPod from backup.

does 2012 mac mini get very hot when using logic pro

Are you saying that your machine does or is it an enquiry before buying ? I use a 2011 server model - well, it does get hot over a period of time, but I've very rarely heard the fan kick in, its a surprise when it does. As far as I know the casing has been specifically designed to conduct heat, rather than having any fancy grilles and so on, being so small in size. I haven't found it to be cause for concern, if that's any help.

WWhen I use my iPad for an hour or more it gets really warm to the touch, what is causing this?

    you using it.
WHen batteries drain they generate heat, as does your screen and processor.
Warm is normal. if it ever gets too hot to handle - literally - then stop using it and book an appiontment at your local apple store. But really, generating heat is no different from your computer getting warm as it's used.

When powering off my iPod touch, any application (facebook, viber etc)installed using App Store won't work again
    How to solve this issue?

Try a hard reset first. Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
If still no luck, try downloading and installing a new app from the App Store.  Doing so has cleared the issue up for several users.

  • Mac Mini Mid 2010 Too Hot after 10.7 Lion

I never measured the temp on the mini using 10.6, because it never got hot to the touch.
Now with Lion it is very hot to the touch (the top cover), so I decided to install a temp monitor and these are the readings:
    CPU: 58 - 60c
    CPU Heatsink: 56c
    Airport Card: 48c
    Ambient: 37c
    HD Bay: 40c
    Mem Bank A1: 56c
    Mem Controller: 48c
    North Bridge 50c
I leave this mac mini always on, and I am afraid the temp is too hot. Using 10.6 I never needed to worry about temp, it never got hot (well it did at first with the screen saver, but once I turned it off it worked fine).
    Are these readings normal?
    Thanks in advanced.

I don't understand, you are kidding, right?
At least for me this is a real problem. Even when the computer is not processing anything it gets hot. I have to place an external fan to cool it down. I didn't have this problem when the same computer was running SL.
    Thanks anyway for the reply.

  • Mac Mini gets wifi connection for 3 seconds, then drops it.

    Hey all,
Long time listener, first time caller.
I'm running a 1.66 Mac Mini with 10.5.4 on it. My wifi network is based on a Comcast broadband connection and is broadcast through an 802.11g Airport Express. Also on the network are: a Macbook (3,1), my iBook G4 (1.33 ghz), my original iPhone, my Tivo, an HP desktop using an 802.11g wireless adapter and occasionally a Wii. All of these have great wifi connections, run fast and connect easily. The wifi is normally WEP ASCII 128 bit encrypted.
The Mac Mini, however, does not. The Mac Mini has been in several positions near my TV (This is what it uses as a monitor), but in most of these has had an extremely hard time finding the wifi network. This got a bit better after I removed all of it's locations, keychains and such and re-set-up everything. Except it still, whenever it connects, drops the web connection within about 10 seconds on an extremely good day. I'll select my network from the Airport drop down menu, it'll join happily, I'll click a bookmark and the page will load very slowly, get about halfway and then stop. Sometimes it'll just go straight to "You are not connected to the internet. (Network Diagnostics)" When I click network diagnostics, either Airport Settings or ISP has failed, but when I go through the process of trying to repair/diagnose the problem, suddenly they will all be working fine.
For what it's worth, I took it to the Genius Bar, and it worked amazingly well on the Apple Store Wifi.
    Any thoughts?

I was having an identical issue with my Mini, and I have an eerily similar mix of devices on my network. Last night I went into my Airport Express configuration and changed the channel that it is broadcasting on (also turned on Interference Robustness) and everything is now working great. By default, my Airport channel was broadcasting on channel 1 - I changed it manually to channel 7, restarted the Airport and that did the trick. All of my macs (including the Mini), tivos and wii are now getting a stronger wireless signal since I changed the channel.

  • Mac mini sometimes stays warm when asleep

I've noticed that sometimes my Mini will be warm in the morning after it's been asleep but sometimes it's cold.  I'm not sure what's causing this difference but I could guess that it's an application still making a demand of some sort.  Is there a way to verify this?  I've noticed that occasionally my Mail icon is bouncing in the dock.  This is because I've got that annoying problem where iCloud keeps requesting my password for the p07-imap.mail.me.com server.  Could this request be waking it up?
Also, I usually never make a habit of turning my macs off, and prefer just waking them instead.  In the past I have only had laptops so this is my first desk top. Can I safely only put the desktop to sleep without powering it up each day?

Hold your horsey their missy.  It might not be that big of a deal.
BIG question. Do you have an external drive attached to the MINI via FW800?
Have you tried to create a bootable external drive with a fresh install of OS X from your back up disk and see if the problem still exists?
How about booting from the install disk (don't install anything) let it just run and see if you have the same problem?
If your Mac won't wake up booted from the install disk then you can suspect a hardware issue.

  • Mac mini gets green tinted display severel times. Help... :(

I just bought a new 2,3 ghz Mac Mini 3 days ago to use as a mediacenter.
I have it set up using my Phillips Tv as screen with a HDMI cable.
Audio is toslink to my amp.
I have a eyetv hybrid connected and a belkin usb hub with severel WD disk.
My problem is that suddenly the display turns green for a couple of seconds
and after that everything on the screen is tinted green.
Sometimes after a while it turns itself back to the right colours again.
There is no consistency in when it does this, and again no consistency in
when it turns itself back again.
The funny thing (as i see it) is that i had a Mac Mini mid 2009 connected
exactly as i have setup the new Mac Mini. And everything worked fine.
I run sabnzbd, air video server, eyetv 3 and XBMC on it. There is aswell
a python script that lauches sickbeard on startup running.
Can anybody please help me to what the problem is???

Try a different gamma setting to brighten up movies. To do this, go into Displays Preferences and click on the Color tab and then the Calibrate button. Put a check mark in the box for Expert Mode and click Continue to start the calibration process. When you get to the screen for gamma, move the slider to the left and it should brighten up middle levels of the picture. See if that helps with movies.
As to RAM, it depends on which generation mini you have as to how much RAM it will take. And you haven't said which one you have.

  • PowerPC Mac Mini gets stuck at grey apple logo screen, wont start

I have a bit of a problem and would appreciate some help, im not especially good at this stuff.
My Powerpc Mac Mini froze up recently, having left it on for a few days without shutting down/resetting. I impatiently turned it off with the power button at the back. When I turned it on again, it only got as far as the grey apple logo screen, it now refuses to go past this screen despite numerous power resets, and unplugging at the power.
I have reset the PMU and the PRAM as suggested by the troubleshooting, to no avail - the PRAM did work as it changed the resolution of the apple logo, but still got stuck at the grey startup screen. Its out of warranty so I have to pay for technical support. Can anyone help?

If you have the original install disk that came with your mini, the first thing to do is to insert that, and then boot the system holding the C key down. This should force it to boot from the install disk rather than the internal drive. The reason you want to do this is two-fold: firstly that if it boots OK that way, it shows the basic hardware is OK, and secondly, it's possible that the hard drive has developed errors (likely directory damage) and the tool to check for that and attempt to resolve it is on the install disk.
Once you've got the system booted to the install disk, exit the installer and run the Disk Utility application. That should display the internal drive (and the install disk) on the left. Select the internal drive and then click 'Repair Disk'. If no errors are found, the drive is fine and the problem lies elsewhere. If errors are reported and the disk is fixed, then you should be able to reboot normally afterwards. If errors are found and Disk Utility reports 'error on exit' not having fixed them, then run it again just to be sure, but otherwise it means the drive is damaged sufficiently that Disk Utility can't fix it. A third-party application such as Alsoft's DiskWarrior will then be needed if you want to try and fix the drive and recover data, or you can simply elect to do an erase and install, meaning the drive will be reformatted and a new copy of MacOS installed. Do not do this if you have data you need to get off the drive!!

  • Mac mini gets stuck in the start-up screen! What do I do? Won't boot up.

Well, I talked my friend into getting a Mac mini, and now it freezes up as the OSX boots up. There appears to be a disc of some sort in the drive, so I can't even put the start-up disc in. What can I do?

Hold the mouse button down as the machine boots, that should kick the disk out of the CDROm. The next step is to just try to reboot again if the system does not boot after kicking out the CD. If you put the OS disc in and hold down the "c " key that should allow you to boot from the OS disc, then search for the utilities folder and repair the disk.
