Mac mini goes crazy upon booting

hello all,
I have a powerpc 1.25 mac mini which had os x (10.3.4 (i think)) and needed an app (linotype explorer) which required a newer version of os x. I upgraded it with a 10.4.3 disk i had and all seemed to be fine. After a restart or two however, things have gone pearsheaped.
I can login fine though when the desktop is displayed, there are no icons on the desktop, no menu bar on the top of the screen (though the spotlight icon appears) and the dock appears occasionally. Interestingly finder does not appear to be open. If i attempt to open any programs from the dock they fail.
I have been able to boot the mac into safe mode, I have ran the updater and installed os 10.4.6 and the other required updates. I have repaired the permissions on the disk and have carried out the hardware test on the installation disk. Still nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have any ideas?
cheers.

Since you can boot into safe mode your problem involves a program you have selected to auto-start or a startup item.
So, boot into safe mode again and 1) open the root Library folder and drag the StartupItems folder to the desktop, 2) open the System Control Panels, select the Accounts icon, select the Login Items, and remove them. (You’ll probably want to jot down the names of them all so you can select them again and if you have a lot of them you may want to just create a new account)
Now restart your computer - it will probably start fine. Now you’ll want to slowly add things back until you find which item(s) aren’t compatible with Tiger.
Note: If you have Adobe’s Creative Suite - remove Cue from the startupItems folder and also look in the PrefPanes folder of your Library folder and remove the Cue item. Do this first and restart. Then return to the above steps if you still have problems.

  • Mac Mini keeps hanging during boot

My ~3 year old Mac Mini keeps freezing during booting with the error message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button...". This happens every time. Booting in safe mode works.
This happened with Mac OS X Tiger but keeps happening even after I have completely reformatted that hard disk and reinstalled Leopard from scratch. There are no external devices connected to the computer besides the monitor and a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
After reading some discussion forums I have already tried starting into Open Bootware and running "reset-nvram" and "reset-all" but to no avail.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
What you are suffering is a Kernel Panic, and given you have reformatted your drive and reinstalled MacOS, it would tend to suggest the issue is hardware related - most common culprit being RAM.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227 explains what kernel panics are, and http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html and http://www.index-site.com/kernelpanic.html may give some assistance in working through the problem to determine the cause.
The one good thing is that your system appears sufficiently stable to allow you to boot to the Leopard installer and complete a full install. This makes it less likely there is a fundamental issue with the most expensive component of the system, the logic board.

  • Mac Mini (2011) can't boot, no screen display.

Hi, my mac mini (2011) finally won't startup today.
It was since two weeks ago, the mini goes freeze very frequently, I discovered that the fan speed was always below 2000rpm, meantime, the CPU temp was around 80-90 degree, it is around 25 degree in the room, last Friday I installed a software named smcfancontrol, which can manually speed up the fan, and it seems better, and the computer runs faster, I think the CPU is running in full speed.
Today, I opened a video to watch, after about ten minutes, the computer goes freeze again, and of course I force powered it down by pressing the power button on the back, then the tragic came:
    - when I try to boot up the machine, the front light turns on, then off with a "ka" sounds like the hard drive shutting down(force powering it down)
    - after around two seconds, the light goes on again, and the fan smoothly goes to full speed, there is nothing shows up on screen, as well as no apple boot up sound.
    - I tried to reset smc (power down, unplug power cable, wait 15 seconds, plug in power cable, wait 5 seconds, power on), no luck.
    - I tried to reset pmu (at least internet says it's pmu, it seems apple website did not mention how to reset pmu on mac mini, power down, hold power button for five seconds, power on), no luck
    - I also tried to unplug the memory, try with every single one to boot, no luck
    - last Friday, when I can still boot up the computer, I thought there might too much dust, I removed the fan and cleaned it up, it looks a small piece of plastic on the fan plug were damaged, but the smcfancontrol app still can control its speed, therefore I think the fan is OK.
    - during many retry, there was one time, the fan goes full speed at startup, with no front light off,(my current status is fan goes to full speed gently).
    - the computer is connected with an AV amplifier, then output to a plasma TV, when the computer is powered off, the TV displays a background of amp, when I startup the computer, although no video output from computer, the TV goes to a "No Signal" status, I dont's think this is related to my problem.
the computer is out of warrentee, but bought only for less than two years... I really want it back to work, can someone help me? many thanks!
wish you all have a good day.

Hard to troubleshoot when you can't turn on the computer on any more.  One option is to bring it to an Apple store to have them look at it.  They will tell you what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix.  I have never heard of them charging for a diagnostic and an estimate.
If your CPU was running hot all the time and your fan had small plastic pieaces, in my opinion, something got fried.  The mini is so compact, that the excessive heat may have also over heated your hard drive causing thd "ka" sound.
If you decide to continue in to use a Mac Mini as a media server, may I would suggest using iStat to monitor it.  I use iStat on my 2011 Mac Mini Media Server to monitor CPU usage, all sensors, and internet incoming and outcoming.

  • Mac Mini (PPC) won't boot off install DVD

I'm having a major issue with my 1.24GHZ G4 Mac Mini. What I want to do is reformat the HD and reinstall OSX. But for some bizarre reason the machine refuses to boot off any OSX install DVD I throw at. I've tried Jaguar and Panther as well. If I hold down the C key during reboot and wait for the Apple logo to come up, I get that but it goes no farther. I can hear the drive being accessed (and I know it's not fault because it works fine under OSX) and yet I end up getting stuck at that logo screen. I can reboot the system normally into OSX Tiger.
I also strangely cannot partition the hard drive from within Disk Utility.
    Can anyone give advice?

    Possible options/questions...
    a) Have you tried using the original Install DVD that came with it?
    b) Have you tried booting into Single user mode and checked the drive? (Hold down Apple-S until it boots into text mode and when you finally get the prompt type 'fsck -fy' without the quotes).
    c) Also, you may wish to try resetting the PRAM immediately before booting from CD. Let it reset THREE times (hold down Apple-Option-P-R or WinKey-Alt-P-R until it has chimed 4 times) and then hold down the C key to boot from your Install DVD.

  • Mac Mini G4 won't boot; fan full blast . . .

    Hello!
I was using my G4 Mac Mini when it decided to re-boot itself, and on start-up, all I heard is 1 loud whrrring sound from the fan, a short pause, followed by continuous whrring sound from the fan going at full blast (very loud!). The screen shows nothing.
I've tried the troubleshooting steps in the Apple site but nothing seems to work. Each time I start it up, it does the same thing.
A few months back I'd the unit repair under warranty by Apple (replaced logic board). So it's quite frustrating to have it down again - and now it's out of warranty.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Mac Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It's perhaps telling that the problem occurred after the system forced a reboot. That tends to suggest there's a significant fault - likely hardware, since if the issue was with MacOS it would not be likely to cause the fan to ramp up to full speed on startup with the screen showing nothing.
You mention that you've tried troubleshooting steps, though not which ones. Likely, given that it features in G4 mini troubleshooting of startup issues, that would have included a PMU reset, but if you haven't yet tried that, do so. I would not hold out much hope that it will assist in this situation, but the power manager is the only hardware component that could cause this sort of potential issue, and the only one that can be reset by the user.
Assuming a PMU reset doesn't help at all, and since the system doesn't show any display, it's not worth trying to boot from the original install disk to run the hardware test since the system isn't even managing the power on self test, thus won't move on to loading MacOS. At that point, I'd say you should take the mini to an Apple store if you have one in your location, or to an Apple authorized service provider for them to give you an idea of what is wrong and what it would likely cost to repair it.
If you don't want to do that, the only option is to open the system and examine it yourself. The problem with that, however, is that there really aren't any user-servicable parts inside so other than checking that everything is correctly connected and properly seated, there's really not much else you can do.

  • Is it possible to Install Windows 8 Pro 64-bit on a secondary hard dive in Mac Mini (Late 2012) using Boot Camp 5?

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini (Late 2012) running on OS X 10.8.3 and would like to install Windows 8 Pro on a secondary hard drive using Boot Camp 5. Is that really possible?
A little background about the topic under discussion.
    1. Mac Mini (Late 2012) has a place holder to accomodate an additional hard drive (2.5") under the hood
    2. If just plugged with one, it would show as an additional volume in the finder
    3. Boot Camp 5 supoprts Windows 8 Pro 64-bit installation
The idea is to run two operating systems (1. OS X and 2. Windows 8) on two hard drives in a Mac Mini, with maintainability a constraint.
Have any one tried this out?  If so, kindly share if there are any specific procedures apart form the one given in Boot Camp 5 manual.
    Thanks in advance.
    ~ Narey

    Gotcha!!
I am done with mounting a secondary HDD (thanks to ifixit) and installing Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on it without a worry. Charm, charm!!
Boot Camp 5 guide prescribes all needed steps and when read and used correctly, installation must be an easy task. And all the existing apple hardwares work so good in the Windows environment too.
I am going to help out a friend of mine in doing a similar thing on his mac too. If you got specific questions, please do shoot up here and i should be able to get a reply to it (if at all).
    Thanks everyone.

  • Mac Mini going jerky

    Hi all,
I recently encountered serious problems after booting my Mac Mini Core 2 Duo (1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD, 10.5.8). The cursor was hanging and the system was incredibly slow. Even the bootup took 10 Minutes, where the system hanged in the Blue Screen before Displaying the Leopard Aurora Theme. But the mouse was really jerky and nearly every process took ages to finish. After rebooting several times, the problem was gone for half an hour or so and then it began again. It always starts when trying to open the console, which is bad because there I would in principle get some information what causes the problem. The, it crashed during an installation (system started to go mad again) and after the reboot the CD could not be detected. After several reboots, the system could relocate the CD and I could eject it from the keyboard.
All this strange things began soon after applying the latest Leopard updates (some security updates for Safari, but this cannot cause the trouble because Safari is not even running), but this might just be a coincidence. Has anyone any idea what can cause this? At this stage, the machine is barely usable.
    Cheers
    Thorsten

    Hi Mykridian,
Thanks for your help, but after a few hours of investigation I now know the source of the Problem, it is the DVD/CD-RW Combo drive. The Mac Mini boots fine without any of the described problems, if the CD/DVD is NOR properly detected. It won't show up in the System Profiler and it just does not react when you try to insert an optical medium (it does not "suck" it in). If a CD-Rom is in the drive, it just cannot mount (of course, when there is no drive detected). When the system boots up WITH the drive detected (happens some time), then it max run for a couple of minutes and then the systems often loses the connection to the drive, so that it is going to run mad. Then calling the system profile -> Write Medium Tab takes ages and the system crashes with the crawling mouse cursor and so on. During the first office installation (which now worked by accident :)) it may have happened that the optical drive went to suspend mode during access which forced the system down.
Anyway it does not look like a problem with the drive itself, it has now reading errors, if it works, it works. I assume, that there might be a problem with either:
    1) The power connection of the drive or the Power Maganement Unit itself: after I resetted the PMU, the drive worked for 4-5 reboots without any problems.
    2) The drive itself maybe broken, a contact error in the power supply maybe, but the mac is not moved, so this may be also rules out.
    3) The bridge chip connecting the optical drive with the logic board may be broken.
    4) The logic board may be broken.
    5) The SMC might have hanged up.
I reset the SMC now and then it worked without having any troubles for 5 reboots and 3 days now. Waking it up from suspension mode also worked fine (this caused sometimes trouble when everything waked up but the drive :)). I hope that the SMC was just going mad and I installed Snow Leopard now with no trouble. It is for sure a firmware/hardware issue and has nothing to do with the OS itself, because sometimes the system just did not want to boot (hanged at the grey screen at the beginning before displaying the apple logo). Tech Tool Deluxe did not show any problems, but this does not mean anything. I hope that resetting the SMC solved the problem and cured the mac mini, otherwise a *** has to look at the machine. I may also try the new firmware released today (or yesterday? doesn't matter :)).
Thanks for your help and sorry that it took so long for me too find the cause of the problem. But as you may now, the optical drive in a Mac is not needed quite often
    Cheers

  • Fan going crazy when booting

When I boot up iMac, the fan goes crazy. After a moment it stops and is quiet again. I unplugged my power and plugged it in again but that does't work. I tried to start AHT by holding D when booting, but that didn't work. I didn't get any discs when I bought my Mac so I can't run AHT using the disc. How can this be fixed?
I also have Windows 7 installed but I don't know if this is relevant. The fan goes mental everytime i boot up. It doesn't matter whether I do that with Windows or OSX.

  • My Mac Mini goes to sleep when I turn off my TV.

Hello and thanks in advance for all help. I have a Intel mac mini that I currently have hooked up via DVI/DVI cable to my Sony LCD television. I recently upgraded the OS to 10.5 from 10.4. The issue that I am having after the OS upgrade has to do with the Mac going to sleep after I turn the TV off. It also goes to sleep if I set up the display to sleep after a period of time even if I have the computer itself set to never sleep. Right now I have the computer set to never sleep and the display to never sleep but when we turn the TV off the computer goes to sleep anyway. The reason why I need the computer to stay awake is because we use a Magicjack at our home for our local phone service and it is plugged into one of the USB ports on the computer. If the computer goes to sleep we loose our home phone service. I am wondering what could be causing the computer to sleep when the display is turned off. When I upgraded to 10.5 I did a clean install and not a upgrade.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks very much to all.

Thanks so much for your help. This fixed things perfect. The only thing I may add for anyone else that has this issue is that it is important to reconnect the power cable to the computer first and then after a few seconds reconnect all of your other cables. The first time I tried it I reconnected the power cable last and it still didn't fix things. I gave it another try reconnecting the power cable first and now everything is perfect.
    Thanks again for your help,
    Rich

  • Mac Mini (OSX6) freezes on boot if USB cable to KVM connected

I have a Mac Mini (OS X 10.6.8) that has started freezing with a solid grey screen on boot up (i.e., no Apple logo, no spinning wheel). The work around is relatively easy: all I need to do is disconnect the USB cable running to my ATEN KVM CS1768 switch, power down, power up and then reconnect the USB cable once the Mac desktop is loaded. While this just happened three times in a row, it doesn't happen all the time. The first time it happened last summer I spent an hour on the phone with Mac support (the computer was still under warranty at that point) and the very last suggestion they made was to disconnect the USB cables before attempting to reboot. (I don't recall precisely if the problem occured when my USB peripherals-- a Mac USB keyboard and mouse-- were directly connected to the Mini rather than being routed through the KVM switch, but I *think* it did.)
If anyone has a quick answer or can point me to a prior discussion of this same (or a related) issue, I would be most grateful

    Hi,
Thanks for the response. I've been using Macs for a little over four years now but this is only the first time I have gone to the system logs (or any of the other logs available from the consolute utility).
The system log appears to be completely unhelpful. I got up this morning sometime after 6:00 a.m. and posted my first report (see above) at 6:48 a.m. (I don't have a record of the exact times of the boot up freezes.)
Following are the *entire* contents ot the system log covering this period:
    Nov 19 01:12:15 WHW-Mac-Mini loginwindow[40]: loginwindow SleepWakeCallback WILL sleep
    Nov 19 06:26:35 WHW-Mac-Mini loginwindow[40]: loginwindow SleepWakeCallback will power on, Currenttime:11/19/2012 6:26:35.019 AM - Waketime:11/19/2012 6:26:33.980 AM = Deltatime:1.038853049
Nov 19 06:27:05 WHW-Mac-Mini loginwindow[40]: no spins reported for this wake
    Nov 19 07:35:13 WHW-Mac-Mini login[17714]: USER_PROCESS: 17714 ttys000
I assume that one of the two successful reboots that I did during this period was probably at 6:27.

  • Mac Mini Doesn't Finish Booting

I have a Mac Mini (Intel-based, from about 3 years ago or so) and all was working fine (Snow Leopard) and yesterday it hung.  After a reboot, it takes 15 mins to get to see the icons on the screen and never fully boots.  There is an OS update ready for download as of a week ago or so, but not installed yet.  (need to free up some HDD space to do the download).  It seems to get to a certain point, moving VERY slowly, but never fully seems to boot up.
Can't access system preferences or any apps/icons on the bottom of the screen.  No menu access at the top of the screen.
Pretty much a brick at the moment.
Didn't install Lion yet.  I think I have 10.6.7 (didn't install most recent update yet).

About a gig or two left, out of 120GB.  I was in the process of clearing up some space for OS and app updates, things seemed to hang and after a reboot, DOG slow.  At this time (after a couple of hours of trying to finish booting), can't access finder or any other icons on the bottom of the screen.  No icons on the desktop either.
