Mac mini got 2 funny occurance...

Hello all.
This is my sister's Mac mini Intel Core Duo. The last time we had a "scare" was when it booted up with a "?" Question Mark folder, and I had to reformat and reinstall the OS.
Recently, it has displayed some "symptoms"
-In my sis's account (Main admin user), there are times when the menu bar icon says the AirPort is connected to my home wireless network, but fails to connect to the internet
Inside the Network Preferences, the AirPort status is in Orange light.
I have to restart the mac to get connected with a green status light.
This occurs quite a few times.
-Happened so far only ONCE. In my dad's account with limited access, he uses only iPhoto to manage his photos, no admin control.
The display suddenly shows a "dragging echo" effect of the icons on the desktop (can imagine??) It's like the display is broken and you have this very "DV" effect of the icon displaying a stream of repeated icons, like those 70s or 80s disco era MTV??
All along I suspect the hard disk is not exactly in the pink of health, could this be a hardware imminent failure? Or worse, the logic board??
The last time during the "?" Question Mark folder, I had ran Hardware Test and everything seemed to check out fine.
Thanks and cheers

  • In the process of installing OS X Maverick on mac mini; got error "Filesystem verify or Repair failed"

    Hi,
I am in the process of installing Maverick on my Mac Mini.  I got an error: "Filesystem verify or Repair failed".
Most threads suggest that I either:
    1. restart process,
    2. install disk and try again,
    3. recover disk
Since I am in the middle of installing, I cannot seem to go back to my working OS to restart the process.  Since Maverick is available in the App Store, i cannot use a disk for it.  That leaves me with recovering the disk.  Can anyone suggest how I can do this without destroying all my files on the computer?
    Thanks,

    Thanks for your advice.
I do have a backup, but I can't access it right now.  I tried the OS X Recovery, but when I try the "Command-R" option, it just goes right back into the install.  I have used the "Command-R" option before, so I know when and how long to hold it for.  I just couldn't get it to not enter the install.  I did manage to at one point get a prompt where it asked me if I wanted to install from Macintosh HD (main partition) or Backup (secondary partition), but I chose Macintosh HD, and it went back into the install.  I couldn't get that option again for whatever reason.
Is there a way I can just start from scratch?  Both Snow Leopard and Mavericks are online only.  Is there a way to pause the install, connect to the internet and install a brand new (wipe out all files - I can always use by backup to restore my important files later) copy of the OS?
    Thanks,

  • Good Spec Mac Mini got painfully slow

    Hi All
Following reading posts on this forum, I have upgraded my 2011 Mac Mini from 4gb to 8gb Memory, but it is still painfully slow, with the spinning beach ball always in play.
I now have a Core i7, 2.7ghz Mac Mini, with 8GB DDR3 memory, 500 mb disc (with 300gb free), running OSX 10.9.1.  I run Microsoft office and Iphoto and thats pretty much it, but even using Iphoto can take seconds for ecah photo to move, and typing emails often means waiting for the text to catch up with my typing.
In my frustration I copied everything off, re formatted the hard disc, and re installed everything, but its still the same speed.  The Activity monitor shows very little CPU activity, although the memory shows as 7.87GB used out of 8GB, not sure if that is normal.
Any ideas would be really welcome, as its getting very frustrating to use, when I first purchased the MAC mini it was blindingly fast on everything.
    Thanks
    Martyn

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(grep [^[:blank:]] "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; { system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(($(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256)); o=$((o>=1024?o:0));  PN "Pageouts (MiB)"; s=( $(sar -u 1 10 | sed '$!d') ); [[ ${s[4]} -lt 90 ]] && o=$( printf 'User %s%%\t\tSystem %s%%' ${s[1]} ${s[3]} ) || o=; PR "Total CPU usage"; [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(ps acrx -o comm,ruid,%cpu | sed '2!d'); PR "Max %CPU by process (name, UID, %)"; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; PC "cron configuration" /e*/cron*; o=$(crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "User cron tasks"; PC "Global launchd configuration" /e*/lau*; PC "Per-user launchd configuration" ~/.lau*; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist") || ID=; ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will beautomatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-Vagain. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal. Please note:
☞ Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted.
☞ When you type your password, you won't see what you're typing.
☞ If you don’t have a password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
☞ Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty. Step 1 will always produce something.
☞ The commands don't change anything, and merely running them will do neither good nor harm.
☞ Remember to post the output of both steps (unless you had to skip Step 2.) It's already in the Clipboard after you complete each step. You don't have to copy it. Just paste into a reply
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of either command, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
☞ Don't post what you see in the Terminal window. The output is copied automatically to the Clipboard.
☞ Don't paste the output of Step 1 into the Terminal window. Paste it into a reply.

  • Mac mini will not recognize my hdtv through hdmi to hdmi

I just bought the new mac mini, got home super excited, hooked it up to my hdtv through hdmi to hdmi and nada.
I have a Vizio, 42-inch, 50/60 hz, Plasma TV.  It was made in 2006 so there is no DVI port, it only has an RGB port other than the 2 HDMI ports.
I have tried both HDMI ports.
I tried turning everything off, unplugging everything waiting 10 seconds, reconnecting everything and turning the mac mini on first, then the tv AND vice versa.
    Nothing.
My HDMI cable was kind of old so I went out and bought a new one from Belkin.
    Nothing.
It does look like the TV is recognizing the device because it does not say "No signal", so it seems that the mac mini itself is not recognizing it.
I just bought this thing, it has not even been setup yet!
And I do not have another moniter here to hook it up to.
I tried calling Apple Care, but I called at 7:30 waited for 30 minutes for someone to tell me they were transferring me to tech support, then the phone rang for 10 minutes.  I hung up and called back and they said the office was closed!
I am a die hard mac user, but I am at my wit's end here.
I guess my next step is to take it to the genius bar?
But I wanted to see if anyone out there has any suggestions/ideas?
(I know there are other discussions out there about this, but nothing I found actually helped my situation.
    Thanks everyone.

I just got my mac mini as well and I'm having the same problem with my HDTV. Unfortunately I am not at home so I do not have the tv model on hand but it is a Panasonic from 05/06.  I am trying to connect from the HDMI on the mini to the HDMI port on the tv and when it boots up the grey start upscreen shows up on the tv and loads for alittle bit than everything goes black. Any ideas?

  • Which is better, a G4-450 Dual or a Mac Mini 1.42?

which is better in terms of Sequencing and plug in performace, the G4-450 Dual or a Mac Mini 1.42?

    G4-450GHz Dual with 896MB RAM
Mac Mini 1.42GHz with 1 gig of Ram
G4-450GHz Dual gets more instances with plugs, more tracks and performance then the 1.4GHz 17" Powerbook, 12" powerbook and Mac Mini which all have the same G4 processor.,
Today, i took the same 34 track session,
-all 34 tracks have a Logic Comp, Eq, Gate
-and also 8 Buses with Comp, EQ, Gates, Delays, Flange, Phasors, Pitch Shifters, 2 Reverbs (1 long and 1 plated) as well as some other toys.
-Master with Waves Ren Comp, Logic EQ.
-6 esx24 Instruments with high loads ( Harps, Strings, Cellos, Drums and Perc)
-8 Long (16 Bar) drum tracks ( Bass, HH, Snare, Toms, Overheads, Fills, Percussion dubs)
-4 Vocal takes and Dubs (more then 16 Bars long)
    -Bass Track
    -2 Acoustic stereo tracks
-4 Guitar tracks, dubbs and fills
    -4 Slide Acoustic guitar tracks
    -4 dubbed effect vocal tracks
AT first, he G4-450GHz Dual choked with 2 errors, then it buffered into the session well and played everything back fine of the same FW drive.
The mac mini got major problems and only performed 28 tracks with the esx24 tracks frozen, and from time to time after heating up chokes again, i had to wait a few minutes before i bounced the session due to overload errors.
Over all, Both have G4 Processors and about 1GIG ram (450GHz Dual is under 1 GIG), but its a clear fact that double processors win, even the lowest 450GHz Dual is still hotter then any flashy fast Bused mac mini, powerbook or iMac.

My Mac mini got the flashing folder with a question mark. I just reconnected the power cord, and it started up normally. But the next day same problem. I don't know if the problem is with the cord or the system. I tried to repair the OS X but the repair disk is greyed out.

  • Mac Mini server question

I'm working on replacing the Mac Mini server in a small office configuration where the Mini is acting as a fileserver, a Filemaker Pro server and Time Machine backup server. There are 8 machines in the office using the server. The files being shared and the time machine backups are on a drobo. Currently it's a late 2009 Mac Mini server with a 2.53Ghz Core2Duo. For the purposes outlined above, is there any reason to get a 2.8Ghz or 3.0Ghz processor, or is the mid-range 2.6Ghz i5 totally sufficient? In either case I would be maxing the RAM.
I'd also be buying a new Drobo to attach to the new Mac Mini, so I was going to keep Time Machine backups on the old drobo, but move filesharing to the new Drobo. Originally I had thought I'd have both those drobos connected to the new Mac Mini, but then it occurred to me that perhaps it would be advantageous to also keep the old Mac Mini server in use with the old Drobo. Is there an advantage to keeping the old Mac Mini server running in the office and utilizing it SOLELY as for centralized Time Machine backups, leaving the new Mac Mini server to just be a fileserver and Filemaker Pro machine. Would that make any difference?

I don't see any advantage with a 2.8 or 3.0Ghz processor versus a 2.6Ghz. The 2.6 should be plenty of processing power for your needs.
In my opinion, keeping the old Mac Mini to offload some of the "duties" is perfectly fine. For example, I have a home network with 2 MMs. One runs ML and Server. It services the household Macs for file sharing and time machine back ups. The other MM runs Mavericks and Server. It services some file sharing but mostly network accounts, VPN services and time machine back ups (for both servers). Both only have 4GB of RAM and work great for my needs. It's overkill for a home network, but I have a back up server and can easily add the services from the other if one goes down. You would have that same capability keeping your old MM.

  • HT3964 Mac mini stuck after logging in

Please help. After i enter the logging information, the Mac mini got stuck and wouldn't proceed. It freezes after I enter my log in infor. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks. My start up hard drive is full, could this be the reason?

Try restarting your Mac Mini in safe mode (holding down the shift key while restarting) then log in, if you are able to log in then start deleting files you don't need, you should try to keep 10% or more of your hard drive as free space.  If you need all of your data then try moving it to an external hard drive then delete the data on your Mac Mini hard drive.  After you are finish restart your Mac normally then log in.

  • Mac Mini Frozen on Front Row Menu

This morning, my Mac Mini got stuck on the Front Row Menu. None of the icons are accessible with the remote (DVD, itunes, etc) and no keys on the keyboard seem to work. I restarted several times but nothing seems to work. The only thing that seems to work is you can put a disc in or take one out. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hi Hodgeko, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions after re-install, then reboot again.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

You really need a newer Mac Mini with a true HDMI output, because that Mac Mini's DVI output does not support Audio.
You might try a 3.5mm to RCA adapter
from the Mac Mini's headphone jack to the TV's audio input,
but that would require being able to select the Audio input in the TVs menu while using it's HDMI input.
Optionally you could also use an external 2.1 Speaker System or patch the audio from the Mac Mini to your home stereo system to enhance that older Mac Mini's audio.

I've got a late 2009 mac mini with a 320gb hard drive and I want to upgrade it to a 1tb drive or bigger. What HDDs are compatible with my mini?
Because of the price I'm not interested in solid state drives, unless of course you want to send me $1,000.
I've already got external drives but I take my mini back and forth to work and don't want to carry those drives with me.
I'm not interested in buying a laptop. My mini works great so why waste $1,000 or more when I can buy a 1 to 3 TB hdd for under $300 and have exactly what I want. My late 2009 Mac Mini with a large hdd.
I went to Crucial's website and they can't tell me what drives fit my Mac Mini. That's where I got my ram (8GB). I'm ONLY interested in name brand quality HDDs.

The limiting factor in your 2009 mini is the max 9.5mm drive thickness.
One of the largest capacity 2.5" drives that meets this criteria is the HGST (formerly Hitachi) at 1.5GB
Any reputable SATA HDD you can find that is not thicker then this 9.5mm will work.

I just got a new Mac Mini, and now when I try to import photos into Lightroom, iPhoto ties to load them first, then Lightroom can't find the files.  Big problem.  What to do?

    Simple:
File -> Export to get your photos out of the iPhoto Library. In the Export dialogue you can set the kind to Original and you'll get back exactly what you put in.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
Once exported, you can then trash the iPhoto Library - just drag it from the Pictures Folder to the trash and empty it.
After that, if you're entirely neurotic about it, just put the iPhoto app in the trash and empty it.
