  • What is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?

I currently have a 2011 Mac Mini Server. When using FCP X, what is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?
    Thanks people,

    Hi Tom,
I just wanted to ask you about what you said about the color correction. To be quite honest I'm not sure what the best workflow is, and I haven't gotten my feet wet in multi-cam editing. Basically my work-flow has been.
    1) Import from the camera as optimized media - I found that adding color-correction at the import stage cause a severe hang with my tape-based Canon unit.
    2) Color-correct the imported files before loading any files into a project
    3) Drag files onto the timeline
    4) Click on the color-correction box
    5) Start editing - Usually I have one camera zoomed a little tighter on the singer, one on the whole band, and my iPad or iPhone camera at different angles so I start cutting things according to who is the focus of the moment, add a Ken Burns effect every here and there, Titles, an occassional transition effect.
    6) Add music effects after the looks are taken care of
    7) Export
Are you recommending clicking on the color-correction box after everything is done?
    Thanks - TZ

  • Mac Mini, Yosemite reboot loop (** GPU Hardware VM is disabled)

I have a mid-2011 Mac Mini that has started to reboot spontaneously. I have ruled out hard drive and replaced RAM, but this is still happening. After several of these, the machine gets stuck in a reboot loop, from which it doesn't recover. I managed to get video of it in verbose mode, and the last line is:
** GPU Hardware VM is disabled (multispace: disabled, page table updates with DMA: disabled)
I ran Linc's script, and here is the full output:

The machine will run (seemingly) indefinitely in Safe Mode. Anyone have any ideas? This feels like it might be a GPU issue to me, but the fact is it does seem to have started since I upgraded to Yosemite.

Thanks Brett, but I'm quite well past all of the suggestions in that page. Hence my post.
The OS is not actually booting, and certainly isn't telling me it recovered from a crash. As I said in my post, "I have ruled out hard drive and replaced RAM, but this is still happening. After several of these, the machine gets stuck in a reboot loop, from which it doesn't recover."
I have filmed it in verbose mode in order to catch the last log line. I am able to run commands in single user mode.

  • Mac Mini repeatedly refuses to wake from sleep

Please to anyone I really need your help.
First let me preface you that I know my console log is incredibly long, and let me know if there is a way to make them more manageable and I will update.
Also let me know which other logs or screen shots or active programs I can provide
    I have a 2011 2.5 ghz Mac mini i5 with AMD Radeon 6630M
I have customized this with a 256gb SSD and 2TB HDD as well as 16gb RAM.
I also have a Monoprice drawing tablet attached.
My keyboard and trackpad are bluetooth
    I am running yosemite 10.10.1.
10.10 was installed with a clean install.
    So here is the issue:
The computer was working perfectly, and then, I can't identify a specific time, it started to just occasionally refuse to wake up from sleep (monitor off, won't activate).
Interestingly it seems to have only started happening AFTER I purchased an apple TV which I use to mirror my screen for video playback. Prior to that I had two mac mini's (one hooked up to TV as a media center and one desktop). This configuration resulted in no freezing issues for a few months.
My parents wanted to get an apple desktop so I ended up giving them my mac mini media center and decided to try using an apple TV mirroring with my mac mini instead.
Now the computer seems to work perfectly fine for a day or two and then it just refuses to wake from sleep.
I do a hard reset and it boots up with no issue and everything works perfectly for a couple days (or less), then it just won't wake from sleep at all.
This can occur when still mirrored to apple TV, but also occurs when it is not.
Background programs tend to be: dropbox, google drive, evernote, flycut, Teamviewer, safari and google chrome
Additionally I have noticed that if the computer has been on for a couple days, when trying got mirror it becomes very choppy.
Activity monitor identifies no CPU or memory hogs. (can post if needed)
The console does seem to show A LOT of issues, but I can't make any sense of them, and I have tried searching google for what they might mean.

  • Mac mini halts on "WaitForSystemMapper" after migration to Mac OS 10.8.5

    Hi,
I have a mac mini mid 2010 with 4Gb RAM, nVidia GeForce 320M, HDMI running well under mac OS 10.7 last update
After making a clone on external USB disk, I tried to migrate to OS 10.8.5 I bought in june 2014 from the Apstore (after having halt after an attempt to Maverick migration)
    1) I had also an halt after the OS 10.8.5 migration (grey screen with apple)
    2) After shut down by pressing power button during 5s, I tried dto restart in Verbose mode (Apple+V key pressed at start), the it shows the following :
    - some FIPS check are done, all passed with success,
    - the it halts on "WaitForSystemMapper" with some hexadecimal indication following
    3) After shut down by pressing power button during 5s, I have been abble to start OS 10.8.5 without the extension (safe mode with upcase key at start)
I tried to disinstall all non Apple programs but without result (same halt at reboot in normal mode)
    4) I also tried to reinit the SMC (unplugging the mac, then starting after replug and 10s wait) : the same
    5) I also tried to reinit the PRAM (Apple+Alt+P+R at start) : the same
    6) Then, i formated the HD of the Mac mini and isntalled OS 10.8.5 from the external USB disk where I put the OS 10.8.5 installer
It rebooted well on the Mac mini HD to install OS 10.8.5
Then I requested to import data (accounts, programs and system setup) from the backup USB disk
It went well, but I was requested to upgrade the system and other Aps : I did it and.... again the same halt, with the same message  and stop at "WaitForSystemMapper" when looking in verbose mode
Do you have any idea of what can occur, what can I displace or test in ktex for instance?
I would like not to have to reinstall all Aps manually, with their proper user data
Thank you in adavance for help

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Can a Mac mini 1,1 run a 27-inch monitor?

I think my old 23" Apple Cinema Display has finally bitten the dust, so I'm looking for a new monitor. This 27" BenQ sounds good, but will my early 2006 Mac mini run it?
    http://shop.benq.us/ProductDetail.aspx?id=378
Part of my system specs are in my signature, but here also is info from System Profiler:
    1.66 Intel Core Duo
    Graphics Chipset Model:          GMA 950
      Type:          GPU
      Bus:          Built-In
VRAM (Total):          64 MB of Shared System Memory
      Vendor:          Intel (0x8086)
    So my questions are:
Will my Mac mini run this monitor?
If it does, will performance take a hit?
Should I drop down to the 24 inch BenQ model?
I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks!

Monitor support has to do with pixels and not size.  Both
the 24" and 27" BenQ have the same pixels (1920x1080).
One just packs the pixels denser (i.e. more pixels per inch).
Although it will support such displays, certain activities at that resolution
may be pushing the GMA 950.  That said, if it worked well with the
23" Apple display, the new ones should be fine.

  • Using a Mac Mini Server quad Core i7 for FCPX ?

I am a student trying to
configure a final cut pro X edit system with a budget of around $4K.
I have over 400 hours of video (some Hi-8 but mostly mini-DV tapes).
For the Mini-DV tapes I plan on ingesting video into FCPX
directly from the camera via firewire DV. I will be using a Sony GV D800 to ingest
the Hi-8 tapes via firewire DV as well. I already have a 30" Apple Cinema Display.
H.264 will be used to deliver finished content to the web and/or Blu-ray.
I was leaning toward the macbook pro 17" but then I realised that a Mac Mini Server
could be configured with the same number of cores and RAM for less money.
    Mac mini Server
2.0 GHz Quad Core Intel i7 -- same number of cores as macbook pro 17"
    8 GB RAM
750 GB Serial ATA Drive 7200rpm + 256 GB Solid State Drive
Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
Apple Magic Mouse + Magic Trackpad
    Other Peripherals:
Promise Pegasus 8TB R4 Raid System in RAID 5 configuration or equivalent
Sonnet Echo Express PCIe 2.0 Thunderbolt Expansion Chassis with
Matrox Compress HD MAX encoding card
    LaCie d2 Blu-ray 12x
Do the extra cores in the server make up for the difference in GPU?
(2.7 GHz Mini dual-core i7 with AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR5 memory) VS (2.0 GHz Mini Server quad - core i7 with Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor and 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory)
Am I thinking about this configuration the right way? Is there
any overhead given that the mini will be a server? Anything missing?
    thanks for your help,
    Tom

Take it back for a replacement while you are within 14 days from purchase.

  • Is the mac mini server the same hardware as the other mac minis (except for the quad core i7 and dual hard drives) with different software or is it configured differently?

I have a mac mini with an i7 dual core processor. It is perceptably slower than my macbook pro with a quad core i7. Does the mac mini server have the same hardware configuation as the regular mac mini with server software or is the hardware different (aside from the i7 quad core and dual hard drives)? I want a mini with a quad core i7...

Your assumption is correct.  The server does however only
have the Intel HD3000 graphics like the base model with
no option, at this time, for the discrete graphics chip.  So,
depending on what you are using it for, that could be a deal
breaker.  Remember that your MBP does have a discrete
    graphics chip.
I have a 2011 Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt display
that gets used as an engineering workstation and general
personal use (some photo editing, LP restoraton, general
internet browsing).  You simply just not enable any of the
server services.  I find the combination to work quite well
for my purposes.  I also have a 13" 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro
which is pretty much strictly for work.  As far as CPU
power it is pretty much equivelent to your Mini.  For the most
part I find the Mini does outperfom my MBP.  I heavily use
Parallels and Windows7 virtual machines, so the more cores
    the better.
So, If you do a lot of CPU intensive stuff that is multithreaded,
the Server may help.  If it is graphics intensive and your software
heavily leaverages the GPU, you may actually take a hit on
    performance.

  • Mac mini and 52" TV monitor -- menu bars invisible

Last summer I bought a mac mini for my Samsung 22" TV/DVI monitor. The mini immediately recognized the TV as a specific DVI monitor and all was well.
The only problem was the monitor was smaller than my iMac screen. A bigger TV was inevitable. We eventually moved, and the idea of using binoculars to watch TV held little appeal, so I bought a 52" Samsung.
I bought a DVI to HDMI cable, as this TV had no DVI input (unlike the 22" combo TV/DVI monitor) and the mini recognizes it generically as "Samsung" and chooses "1080p" for the monitor resolution. (I assume this is preferred to 1080i, even though the refresh rate is slower?).
I want to use this both as a "Front Row" interface for iTunes movies, etc, and as a conventional monitor for when I want to do computery things.
The menu bar (as well as the bottom of the dock) are invisible. They are there when I remotely display the screen, so I think they might just be hidden by the frame. Is there a viable workaround? Of the 15 or so possible resolutions, exactly one shows the menu bar, but at the expense of lower resolution and terrible color balance (oddly, if I rotate the image 180° in Display System Preferences, the color looks ok).
Also, while I am at it, what is the optimal way to export audio from the mac mini into a stereo input? Right now I am using the headphone jack, and it sounds ok, but I suspect there might be a much better way.

I've been having this same problem! My Mini plugged into my 42" HDTV (via DVI to HDMI adapter, with Overscan enabled) has the desktop overflowing the screen on all four sides. With Overscan disabled, the desktop is too small and has a black band on all four sides.
Now, I know the Nvidia GPU can scale/stretch the display for external displays, I had to do it with my Vista laptop. So, how do I do the same thing on my Mini?
I've called tech support, but I had no luck. The first guy would only say 'You can't do anything else.' and hung up when I asked for someone else. The second guy didn't even understand the issue.

  • How slow should a Mac mini with i7 2.3 GHz quad core be?

I am really disappointed about how mind numbingly slow this computer is for even the most basic tasks.  I'm wondering is something wrong with it or is this just what happens when you don't have an SSD?
I have been using exclusively SSDs in my computers since about late 2009 or early 2010 and since then I have never really felt my computer was utlra slow.  I got a Mac mini as a temporary computer when my MacBook Pro started blowing up logic boards every other week while it is endlessly being "repaired".  Since this has the same exact processor I expected it to be reasonably speedy at least for simple tasks like web browsing, email, word processing, etc. (no heavy graphics work) but it's not.  Every experience is hard drive *crunch* *crunch* *crunch*, wait wait wait, *crunch* *crunch* *crunch*.  It's really very slow even on the simplest tasks and if I am running a few things it's like molasses.  According to activity monitor as expected the CPU is not taxed in the slightest.
Is there something wrong or is this just what it's like going back to hard drives that spin?  Is there something I should be testing or looking into?   At least I can say that it doesn't crash.
Timed with a stop watch it takes about 10-15 seconds to launch any of the following with nothing else open: Excel (blank workboook), Mail app, Firefox, etc.  It's worse with lots of things open.  Always tons audible hard drive activity no matter what I'm doing.

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • HT6065 After upgrading to Mavericks , I now find my Mac mini runs very slowly.

Now that I've upgraded to Mavericks why does my Mac mini feel like a PC?
Speed was never an issue I have  stock standard 2011 model....
Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    500Gb Hdd SATA (175Gb free)
1x USB3 external hub w/- 4 Seagate external self powered hard drives
    (3x 2Tb/ 1x 1Tb)
I regularly remove files that I no longer require, I use Clean my Mac and remove the garbage regularly too.
I have checked for any open programs with activity monitor and the results are.....there hasn't been any.
As mentioned before upgrading I was using OSX Mountain Lion with no problems at all.
My son said" Don't upgrade until all the bugs are ironed out"
    Well.....Younger generation knows best
and of course I use Time machine for back ups.
So I am very tempted to downgrade after the new year...
Any speed resolutions would be handy
    Thanks in advance

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostictest. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary in case your startup drive is failing.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem. Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out.
If possible, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; { o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{print $2}' | tr -d .)/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; o=$(crontab -l); PR "User cron tasks"; o=$(cat /e*/lau*); PR "Global launchd configuration"; o=$(cat ~/.lau*); PR "Per-user launchd configuration"; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n" $o; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist"); ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s  (%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your password. Also remember to post the output.

  • USING STRAWBERRY I-MAC AS A MONTOR FOR MAC MINI

Anyone know of a way of using an imac strawberry, with tray loading cd as a monitor for a new mac mini. my daughter adores this machine, but needs to upgrade

    Hey Irene,
Yes I know what you mean. I'm working on an iBook G3
700 MHz 14.1" with Airport that I repaired. It was in
a 95 MPH car crash and the LCD was smashed, frame was
bent and the Combo Drive was also bent. Replaced the
LCD with an eBay one, pounded out the frame but the
Combo was too bent to bring back to life. Then it
suffered the classic GPU failure but had it reballed
and it's working great. Total cost $250. I'm amazed
how well these G3 antiques work with Panther or
Tiger. Only occasionally I see a mild slowness.
Since I got this I'm seldom on my G4 tower only for
photo editing, Excel or the like. I love it as you
say because of the portability. I also just sold
    another one I fixed to a client. It was a 12". She's
a reporter so now she can work anywhere. Even in her
    car on stakeout!
    Richard
    Dear Richard,
My daughter is going to be going to college in Ohio. Do you think that you could rehab something inexpensive for me that would run the Mac Cats? It would be great to have a book, but a desktop would also be wonderful. We're flying out in July for Orientation I. However, I'm thinking of taking the train for the second Orientation and her move in this August.
You seem quite the rescuer and rebuilder of Macs. Most of what you write about zooms over this newbie's head. (I used to worry that I was bothering you bright lights with my piffling problems. However, Boomer assured me that all questions are welcome...no matter how newbie!
My AIM is on my profile, and
    All the best,
    Irene

  • Mac Mini HDMI Output Problem w/ LG L246WP

NOTE: This appears to be unrelated to the "screen flickering" that has been noted previously.
I'm using a fresh new Mac Mini 2012 with an LG L246WP LCD monitor. The monitor has HDMI, VGA and Component video inputs.
When I attach the monitor to the Mini DisplayPort output, using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI cable, the display functions properly at all resolutions - including the native 1920 x 1200 resolution that I use it at normally. All resolutions are clearly displayed in the "Displays" System Preferences pane. The display looks perfect, functions properly.
When I attach the monitor to the HDMI port using an HDMI cable, the display does not fucntion properly. The display is shifted about 80-100 pixels to the left and about 20 pixels up, creating black bars on the bottom and right sides. Because of this, a large portion of the display is not visible including the menu bar and most of the left side. Additionally, the settings are reduced to "Best for Display" or "Scaled", with resolution options under "Scaled".
This is not acceptable. I had planned on simply using the Mini DisplayPort output as a workaround, since I already have the DVI adapter from an old setup, but I need to use Thunderbolt to access external hard drives for rapid data transfer. One of my Thunderbolt accessories does not have two ports, so I can't simply add the Mini DisplayPort adapter to a chain. The HDMI port needs to function properly with my monitor.
It's important to note that this monitor has functioned properly with many other comptuers running OS X, Windows and various Linux flavors and it hasn't ever done this before. I've tried several different HDMI cables, ruling that out as a problem. I've tried the HDMI to DVI adapter that ships with the Mac Mini 2012 along with two different DVI to HDMI adapters, ruling that out as a problem. I tried attaching several HDMI devices (game consoles, DVD players, etc) and they all function properly, ruling out an HDMI issue as a problem. The monitor functions properly when attached through the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, so it's not a problem with the monitor. I've reset the PRAM already and the installation of OS X 10.8.1 is stock with no modifications or migrated data. I've tried the suggestions on the HDMI FAQ (although there's no "underscan" option available in Displays)
I tried to call AppleCare and after describing the problem I got disconnected with no callback. I started another ticket, described the problem, discussed the previous disconnection, was assured that I'd be called back if disconnected, and haven't heard back in two hours. So I started to dig into the problem in earnest.
    This gets pretty technical.
After substantial research, it appears that this issue is related to the EDID that the monitor sends to the computer and, crucially, the way that the driver responds to it. For some reason, the HDMI port is recognizing the monitor as a CEA device instead of a monitor. As a result, it's restricting the monitor's available resolution to the native resolution  that the CEA 681 Series Extension describes ("Best for Display") and all other resolutions (including 1920 x 1200) are only available as "scaled". For some reason that I can't discern, all resolutions (even the 1080i and 1080p options) have similar deformities.
I've attempted to fix this by placing an appropriate override file in /System/Library/Displays/Overrides with an edied EDID removing the CEA-enable flag from byte 127 but, even after a reboot, the OS still insists that it's a CEA device and it won't allow me to force it to recognize the monitor as a 1920 x 1200 LCD Monitor.
How did I come to this conclusion and develop the fix? A nearly identical problem description showed up on the following website, with details on how this user fixed the issue:
    http://byuu.org/articles/computing/edid
They used a convoluted process that involved dismantling the monitor and flashing the EDID on the monitor itself. It fixed their problem. I'd prefer not to go through that process just because one computer has a problem with it. Frankly, I'd prefer if the new Mac Mini performed properly in the first place.
TL;DR: The Mac Mini 2012 doesn't work right with the LG L246WP through the HDMI output. Everything else works fine with it. This is very uncool. It's most likely to be an issue with the driver for the Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU that are bundled with OS X 10.8.1. The Mac Mini 2012 won't update to 10.8.2 (yet), so I can't test it.
Anyone have any other ideas? Anyone else using a Mac Mini 2012 (or 2011) with an LG L246WP monitor? Anything simple I've missed?

Problem Resolved. But it was complicated. And a huge pain in the rear.
TL;DR: I flashed the EDID as described here. This is not recommended for the weary. Ideally, Apple should release an update OS X that will include the updated Intel HD Graphics 4000 drivers that utilize the CEA flag properly.
Here's the detailed version. As mentioned above, this isn't recommended for the weary. An improper (or interrupted) EDID flash can have seriously unpredictable effects on a monitor's performance.
Step 1: Get a Windows PC set up with a floppy drive and find a floppy disk. Use this system to format the floppy as a MS-DOS Boot Disk and copy over the "ddcw" program described at the aformentioned link.
This took awhile, but I was able to cobble together a temporary frankensystem with parts I had laying around. In installed XP and formatted the disk with XP's format tool.
Step 2: Grab EDID data from the monitor, modify it to disable CEA mode at bit 127 and make sure bit 128, the checksum, is appropriate.
This also took awhile. Several graphics cards I tried could not read or write EDID data. I ended up swapping AGP cards in my frankenstein box until I found one that worked - a generic GeForce4 4200.
Once the EDID data was written to the floppy, I edited the text file containing the EDID data to change the last two hex octets from "01 33" to "00 34" (00, to disable bit 127, and 34 is 33 + 1, which satisfies the checksum) and formatted the text file to match the sample included in the EDID_Write.zip file. Your mileage may vary - make sure the checks.
Step 3: Write EDID data to the monitor.
The link above mentioned three options: Easy (monitor's EDID is unprotected - write away!), Hard (monitor's EDID is protected - use service mode to attempt a fix), and Very Hard (monitor's EDID is protected, hardware modification is required).
Luckily my LG246WP simply needed to be put into service mode as described at the link above (menu + power) and once started up in service mode, I simply enabled "Aging Mode" (whatever that means) and attempted a DDCW write of the updated data.
    Step 4: Profit!
After doing this, I powered off the monitor and powered it back on with the Mac Mini attached. The display functions PERFECTLY with HDMI out, just as it does using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.

  • My Mac mini no longer detects my monitor resolution

My Mac Mini has stopped being able to detect the resolution of my monitor, which is a 1680x1050 Acer widescreen.  1680x1050 is also no longer a choice of resolutions under 'Displays' in 'System Preferences' so I cannot select my monitor resolution manually.  I suspect that there is a bug somewhere in a recent update which has broken support for my monitor.  Is there an official channel by which I can report this bug?  Has it been reported already?  Is there an ETA on a fix?  This renders my Mac more or less unusable.

It's unlikely that the upgrades had anything to do with the problem, slim superdrives are just not all that reliable.
You might try a few tricks before taking it in for service or springing for a Mac compatable external DVD drive.
    1. Reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller
    2. Reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

  • Please help me choose a Mac Mini

I have not owned any mac computer and have been waiting for the new mini for a few months. I need a decent mac computer without having to spend too much to program iOS and maybe some photo viewing and casual editing. So the OS X is important to me.
The new Mac mini is kind of disappointing. I would expect a better quad CPU and user expandable memory (still uncertain so far). So I am struggling between two choices:
    1. I may choose the new 2.6 G model and definitely need the memory to be 16GB. I am not sure if I want the 1TB fusion drive for $200.
    2. There are still some old 2012 quad models available at some online stores and I may get one and expand the memory to 16 myself. Can we easily swap out the hard drive and install one 1TB SSD? How do we transfer the OS and app with the box to the new SSD? The biggest concern on this option is if I can update the OS to OS X Yosemite and even later versions because I will use it for programming iSO apps and must be able to update to the latest OS X.
    Thanks.

From what I see in the Apple Store, the new Mini still does not have a quad-core cpu
nor did the older Mini (Late 2012) across any they had listed. However if you need a
quad core model and performance, looking into the future, you should seek to inspect
the higher specification computers in the line. Since there is a limited upgrade, I can
see why the Mini is desired. If you get a Mini server model, internal storage options
can be increased. New MINI 16GB RAM upgrade is an Online Store-only upgrade.

The only small computer with quad-core cpu technologies in the Store, is 15" MB/Pro
portable, offering several features but at a higher price; including a Retina display.
Of these, two models; both near & above $2K USD; the dual GPU model may have
gotten past the hardware earlier model owners cited issues with over a few years.

An SSD and RAM upgrade could make the MINI a fair computer, even though it only
has the Dual-Core technology. However the upgrade may affect AppleCare coverage.
There often are Late 2012 model Mini Macs in the official online refurb store page, &
they qualify for the optional AppleCare; however they don't offer custom upgrades.
The low-end MINI has similar specs to the low-end non-Retina MacBook Pro 13-inch.
A little faster bus speed, and a slightly newer graphic processor...
At least the newest Mini, according to the online Apple Store, says it will ship with
Yosemite; so with 16GB RAM, that can be a good start. You should ask an Apple
genius or specialist what they can do for you in the way of an upgrade to larger SSD
or HDD, after delivery, so AppleCare is not affected. If they still let you do anything.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!
