Mac mini (intel) loss of ethernet using OS 10.4.11

Scenario: Powered up mini after being shut down overnight. Power light came on, but no chime, no output to monitor. Pushed and held power button on back, no joy. Pulled power cord, waited 30 seconds, plugged back in, pushed power button and mini started up with chime. Ever since, all attempts at using ethernet port in OSX have been unsuccessful. All cables and connections check out - in fact the ethernet works fine when using Boot Camp and Windows XP. Something in OSX is ignoring the fact that there is an ethernet cable hooked up and providing data. I have zapped PRAM and done the power reset (unplug everything, wait...etc).
Ethernet continues to work in Windows XP, so it's not a hardware problem. I've noticed that several saved program registrations have vanished. How do I resolve what appears to be something corrupted in OS X?

Not initially. I disconnected everything, plugged back in and restarted...also plugged ethernet cable directly into the modem. In all cases the ethernet light on the modem is illuminated, it works fine in Windows XP (Boot Camp) but is not seen by the mac side anymore.

  • How to use a mac mini intel with 30" cinema display

Arg, I just bought an Apple 30" cinema display to go with my new Mac mini intel, but oops the 30" apple cinema display has to use a dual link dvi card. Anyone know how to get out of this horrible situation without buying another new computer.
    Thanks!

If you want to run the LCD at it's high 2560x1600 resolution, then you have absolutely no option whatsoever than to buy a PowerMac or MacBook Pro. Otherwise, you will be able to run the panel at 1280x800 with the Mac mini, which wouldn't make much sense though.

  • Dual Powermac G5 vs Mac mini Intel Duo

I'm sure this has been discussed already, but I would some more input on this.
I am looking to upgrade to a faster Mac. I am currently running a G4 1.25 DP with 2Gigs of RAM. It's a fine machine, but I would like to take advantage of some of Apple's more powerful units. Anyway, I am considerering a Dual Processor 2.0 G5 Powermac with about 2.5 to 4gigs of RAM, or my other choice is one of the new Mac mini Intel Core Duo models with RAM maxed and a faster larger HD.
My question is--what machine would give me a better performance running Universal Apps, such as Logic, Soundtrack Pro, ect...? Obviously, the Apples are all going to way of the Intel and I have been hearing great things about the new Intels. The Mac-mini has limited expandabiltiy and one Firewire port, but runs Intel. What to do? I may consider the Imac G5 core duo as well.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Randy

    well here' my experience...
i recently sold a dual 1.8 G5 with 2GB RAM. reason being simply to get rid of it while it was still worth something. on top of that, it was really large, loud and put out a ton of heat. i bought the Core Duo mini with a GB of RAM as a sort of temporary machine until the next Intel "Pro" towers come out. i've been using it for about a month now for Logic Pro, GarageBand, Ableton Live and Reason and soon my SoudTrack Pro Universal disks will be here as well. i was really concerned that the system would feel slow coming from the G5 but i can totally recommend this machine with confidence as it feel and performs as fast as (and sometimes faster than) by dual G5. i'm talking when using Universal binaries of course. these Intels are fast. the mini is a silent, snappy little machine. there are a few things i miss that will eventually prompt me to buy a tower such as:
limited internal storage options - i believe the largest 7200RPM hard disk you can put in the mini is the 100GB from Seagate. of course, external Firewire and USB storage is always an option.
the limited graphics card could be an issue for some. it doesn't seem to directly affect audio performance but just knowing that it's using your hard RAM is a bit unsettling.
i miss FireWire 800, even though the G5 had serious slow-down issues when writing to fw800.
    i miss using two displays.
having said all that; the speed, quietness and cool running temperature of this mini is enough to outweigh any negatives. i notice zero speed decrease from the dual g5 and cost me about a third of the price. it will make a great temporary workstation for me and when the next towers come out it will make a great livingroom entertainment system and perform node duties over gigabit ethernet. don't hesitate. it's a great system.

  • Bridging mac mini to xbox 360 to use xbox live...HELP!

i've done this once before with a previous router i was just trying out and it worked great. however, i purchased a wireless router and cant get it to work again. i've found all the instructions that the internet has to offer when it comes to using your mac as a bridge to get on xbox live...the fact that i've done it successfully hopefully shows that. my problem now comes in the DNS stage...it always fails.
i think the problem is this...in the termminal when i type in ifconfig en0...the inep i get is 192.768.2.1...but when i check to see what my router IP is...it's the same. is this what is causing my problem and not letting me get on xbox live?
when i go to my xbox settings...under IP i know its working because on the xbox live test it passes every time...and just fails at DNS which is where i'm supposed to put my router IP which happens to be the same as my normal IP.
    is this the problem?
i called my ISP and they said there's nothing they can do about it...they cant change my router IP. i hope you guys can help. i really want to get on without having to spend 50*100 bucks. thanks.

okay...here's my complete set up. i have my mac mini which is connected to my belkin wireless connection which is upstairs. the belkin router is plugged into my cable modem (road runner if that matters). i pick up a full signal on my mini. from my xbox360 to my mac mini, i have an ethernet cable connected.
when i type in ifconfig en0 in the terminal, the "inet" i get is 192.68.2.1. this is to be used in the IP section of connecting to xbox live as i understand. actually, each time i try to connect, it passes all of the IP tests.
the problem comes with the DNS. from what i understand, what i'm supposed to put in the DNS section of my xbox live is the number i get when i type in DIG in the terminal and then scroll down to where it says server. the number i get there is also 192.168.2.1.
i type that into the dns and it does not work.
my firewall is off...my sharing is on. i'm not sure what to do.
to make sure that my xbox is working, i plugged in my dell laptop and bridged the connections and it worked great. but i need it to work with my mac...at least i want it to. thanks.

  • How to install mac os (PPC) on an external hard drive, through a mac mini (intel) ?

  • Mac Mini (Intel) Ticking/Clicking Sound

I purchased a new Mac Mini (1.8, 80gb, 1gb, superdrive) about a week ago, and have enjoyed using it ever since, however I recently there is a ticking or clicking sound coming from the unit which sounds to me like it may be the hard disk either starting up, or parking down, this happens intermittently and doesn't seem to follow any strict pattern.
Opening Activity Monitor and viewing the Disk Activity tab reveals that there is usually a small amount of data being written to the hard disk when the ticking occurs, however this is not the case 100% of the time.
The disk appears to be fine according to its S.M.A.R.T. status, however I've had "verified" disks fail on me before, therefore don't really trust the S.M.A.R.T. monitoring.
Does anyone have any suggestion on what this may be?

The drive is actually a Fujitsu.
It's now started clicking again after being left on
over night, I've closed everything and tried running
fs_usage, but could see no distinct pattern when the
    sound occurred.
This is happening to me with my 80GB Fujitsu Mac Mini Intel. It started after about two weeks of use. This also happened to my G4 Mini with the stock Seagate drive. My old G4 eventually beat itself to death over the course of a month and I have a feeling this one is going to do the same. My second drive (Toshiba I think) didn't have any problems so it may be that only certain drive models are affected.
I also downloaded and ran fseventer, which again
revealed nothing, when it first clicked after opening
the app it said the machine was writing to Finders
plist file, however nothing registered after this
    with subsequent clicks.
Yeah, fs_usage doesn't seem to reveal anything significant either.
I'm still in the dark with this, and have a hard time
    believing it to be normal.
I agree, I think there's something wrong with the Mac Mini power controller. My drive mainly does it when it is left running overnight. As soon as I sleep and wake the drive, the noise goes away - to me that suggests a controller just needs reset. I've resorted to sleeping the drive overnight and when I'm out until Apple post a fix for it. The drive head slamming into the mechanical stop is not normal in the same way a train slamming into the mechanical stops at the station is not normal. Some control is being messed up - according to the last site, it is usually caused by the fact that the servo calibration is messed up and cannot properly govern the speed and position of the head assembly on the drive and this is worsened by temperature.

  • Brand New Mac Mini (Intel 2.53 320HD 4gb - January 2010 - new Airpot Extrem

I purchased a new Mac Mini Intel Duo 2.53 320HD 4gb and a new Airport Extreme, new iWorks, wireless Mouse and keyboard, ipod touch 8gig and have a iphone 3gs 16g already few months old. My Mac Mini keeps trying to install something in System/Library/CoreServices and halts permission check until Disk Utility saying that it has been altered and will not repair. I did notice in that directory everything about Apple Remote Desktop, including ARDAgent / AppleVNCServer.bundle which contains curtainlock, kickstart, remote desktop.incs, RemoteDeskoptAgent, lock.jpg, networkUser.tiff, Lockscreen, lockscreekLeopard386, VNC Gues, sshHelper, writesettings, VNC PrivilageProxy, AppleVNCServer, Screensharing, Upgrade User, UserAccountUpdate, WorkflowServerRunner, Ticket Viewer and so on. My new Apple Extreme Dual Band, paid $179 for it, shows another base station when trying to re-set to factory settings that doesnt match mine, and I have no other apple stuff in my apartment. Also, before I can even enter the password and set it up, the Amber solid light turns green, and thanks me at the end for setting up my wireless with a usb printer. I don't have, nor ever setup a printer, no in my sharing, and under Airport at the top of my screen listing all the networks in my area also has a second section listed Devices - and it shows a hpsetup under my computer's airport.
Would buying techtools deluxe help fix this problem? Or norton Security for mac? or use the PGP Corporation Whole Desktop security Apple recommends to encrypt everything and re-install my operating system after I do a full erase with a one zero clean on both empty and disk02 - Machintosh HD?
Also my iphone 3gs is acting strange. It says the AT&T firmware is 5.11.7 and 3.1.2 (7D11) but the actual model number has changed from whatever M..L/A to now just M...LL (no /A).
    Thanks for any help.

Actually, he has 2GB of RAM and a 2.26 GHz processor.
I'd suggest trying it. Worst thing that could happen is your system is too sluggish to use, in which case you reformat the partition (or remove if you want) and install a different, more compatible version of Windows. But personally, I could see it working well for you. However, if you're using an Apple Wireless keyboard and Mighty/Magic Mouse, you may run into some problems with pairing, however, this is a Boot Camp driver problem and can be fixed fairly easily.
I can't see it creating any problems, I'm running Windows 7 32 bit on my Mac mini with only 1GB Ram and a 1.66 GHz processor. And it's running really smooth. I should also note that Windows 7 uses far less resources than Vista, thus it runs a little better on slower machines than Vista did.

  • Mac mini vs. Lacie Ethernet Hard Drive

So I just got a new Lacie Ethernet Disk mini that I'll be hooking up to my router. I also have a "spare" Mac mini that I thought about using as a file server. Both would just be connected to the router.
Which do you think would be faster in terms of access speeds? The Mac mini or the Lacie drive?
Ultimately I'll just be storing/accessing things like photos and design files.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It can be done, but it's a very VERY expensive way of adding an external drive. Far better to sell it and buy a much less expensive external drive with far greater capacity and faster speed.
However, if you do with to do this, connect the two with a firewire cable, and with the iMac already running, boot the mini while holding the T key until the mini appears as a drive, mounted on the iMac desktop. That's firewire target disk mode.

    Thanks for your answer.
I've reset the iPod several times without success and restored using iTunes. Nothing helped.
I uninstalled itunes and installed it again and again and again... opened a new library etc.
The synchronization is slow, then itunes freezes. So, i have to restore the iPod again... and again and again.
Oh, I'm sure I wrote it wrong, hope you understand me.

  • Mac mini intel 2 versions 128mb and 256mb graphics in windows ????

Okay I have 2 mac mini intels core solo's and with the same ram 1gb installed and the same windows xp sp1 version etc etc. the one has 256mb video ram and the other has 128mb video ram ????
The 128mb one has a stamp hp42 and a sticker on the motherboard stating locked something ??? tiger = 10.4.5 install dvd
The one with 256mb has hp22 stamp and no sticker but also came with the orriginal tiger for intel 10.4.3 ?? so likely is a older model ????
Does anyone have a clue about this ????

and the same windows xp sp1 version.
I didn't think you could load SP1 onto a intel Mac, how did you get it work? Are you using boot Camp?
No idea about the stickers as I didn't disassemble my mini. Can I ask you you decided to take the computers apart?

  • Mac mini (intel) Dead :(

Ok this has being going on for months. The only programs I use are iTunes and Eyetv. They crash several times a day, regardless of the versions used.
If I put the Mini to sleep over night for example, I wake it up and about 15 sec later It hangs, the coloured ball appears and spins for ever. I force quit the Mini and it can't fine the HD. I get the folder with a question mark. I unplug everything including power, wait 30sec plug in the power start up the mini and it's fine until the next day when I do it all again.
This method no longer works. It will not start up. Tried the utilities from the system disc but no HD shows up.
    Any ideas ??? Any one.

    Here is wat to do:
    1. copy all your important data via fire wire
    2. use the disk utility on the osx disk to write zeros to your HD
    3. resart
    4. reinsal mac osx
This was cause most likely by eyetv because the hardrive is very active while using it so if u had a power surge or pushed the computer 2 far and started to use the hd as Vram you corupted your harddisk.. i did the same thing running linux in paralles

  • Mac mini Intel Core Duo fan very loud and runs at high speed all the time.

I purchased an "Open box" Mac mini Intel Core Duo, 1.66Ghz, 2G ram, 80G HD and SD a few days ago from Fry's.
It runs beautifully except the fan is very loud compared to any Mac my family has ever had. It is so loud that we were thinking of putting it under the desk.
The fan runs constantly, and I mean all the time, at a high speed. You can really feel the air coming out the exhaust vents. The case is always cool to the touch as is the exhaust air.
My aunt bought a similar Mac mini (But only 512Mb ram) the same day. Her's is very quiet. The case feels just slightly warm, not unlike other Mac mini's I've seen.
Should my Mac mini's fan be running this way?
    Thanks,
    llulua
BTW: The "open box" was sealed with a Fry's label and it said that this had a new warranty. Yet, checking the serial number, it said that it had about 260 days left. I guess Fry's is backing it?
Also, someone told me that perhaps the main wire from the fan to the logic board is disconnected.

Since you have 2 gigs of memory, my thoughts are that when the party (Fry's or the origianl purchaser) upgraded the memory, they neglected to reattach the wire at the front of the Mini under the IR receptor at the right front corner that regulates the fan speed. This wire must be unattached in order to upgrade the memory, and is probably why the original person brought it back, because of the fan noise resulting from failing to reattach the wire. If that wire is left unattached, the fan runs continually at high speed to protect the CPU and system in general. If you do not want to use a putty knife to open the Mini, take it back to Fry's and ask someone who is Mac savvy to open it and reattach the small plastic receptacle at the end of the wire into its socket at the right front of the machine. When I go to Fry's, I am always concerned because the employees allow people to pry keys off of the Apple notebooks, so don't expect that their employees to know or care about anything Mac.

I try to run my mac mini (intel) without a screen and without a keyboard using Microsoft Remotedesktop.
Unforunatelly the mac mini will not boot, if it is not connected to a keyboard and a screen.
Running under Tiger the mac mini will boot without connecting a screen and keyboard. Further I can use a VNC-Server and VNC-Client in order to operate by remote control.
Has anyone of you an idea how I can solve my mac mini boot problem?

  • Got my mac mini intel singel core yesterday!! first impressions !

hi to all, yesterday i got my mac mini singel core 1,50 GHz 512 ram 60 s-ata, here are my first impressions:
of course it looks like the same;ir-sensor for the frontrow remote control is at the right side, inside the drive slot (very nice solution). It boots up faster than my old mac mini G4 1,25 Ghz 1GB ram.first of all i did a xbench test, here are my results:old mac mini g4 1,25 1 Gb ram xbench points=36,37; new mac mini intel single core xbench points=63,37 !!!Very nice and smooth system import from the old ppc os x was no problem using firewire. virtual pc 7 does not work any more.
overall rating after 1 day, very good outstanding product

I also got the Core Solo and so far am very much satisfied with it. One of my highest Xbench scores was 65.40, twice as fast the score of the lowerend G4 Mac Mini. The feel of the system's respondsiveness is certainly on par with other Intel based Macs I tried at the local Apple stores. Boot time is under 30 seconds most of the time. One weird thing I noticed is that when open " About This Mac", the system identifies the processor as a 1.5GHz Intel Core Duo. However, System Profiler says it's a Core Solo. Well, I will only open "About This Mac" from now on
To answer your question, Tobias, 720p plays awesome but 1080p not looking good. The new graphic eventhough integrated is still an improvement over the graphic of the old model. Why? It supports Core Image and you get all the nice effects in Dashboard, also HD contents play much better obviously.
512MB of RAM is not enough. I'm glad that I didn't buy the Core Duo because with that $200 in difference, I can up the fund to buy a pair of 1GB DDR2 memory and a 7200RPM hard drive for upgrades. The hard drive on the Mac Mini has always been a weak link. SATA is supposed to be faster than the old IDE ATA, but from what I've seen so far, it's pretty much the same.
