Mac Mini internal fan

The internal fan on my Mac Mini runs continually. It's two and a half years old and there's plenty of ventlation. Problem just started. Any thoughts. Thanks

Welcome To Apple Discussions!
At 2 1/2 years old, I assume this to be a G4 mini - one of the first ones?
It isn't that these were susceptible to this problem but the possible causes are somewhat different to the later Intel models.
First thing to do is ensure it's not a control problem. If it is a G4 mini, perform a PMU reset.
To reset the PMU
- Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
- Let go of the power button.
- Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
If that doesn't resolve this, firstly ensure it is not being caused by some errant process or application running and holding the CPU load unusually high. Run Activity Monitor (in Applications>Utilities) and check that the system is basically idle, even when the fan remains spinning. Also monitor the system and see if it takes longer for the fan to spin up to full speed from a cold start (after being powered down for a few hours or so) as opposed to a warm start, rebooting after a period of use.
If the fan runs when the system is shown to be idle and the time it takes to start running fast is longer from a cold start than a warm one, then it is possible you have a hardware issue. This might be nothing more than a loose CPU heatsink or rather more significant, such as the thermal pad on the base of the unit, (it is sandwiched between the underside of the logic board and the mini's baseplate and is used to wick heat away) suffering degradation. Either of these issues can be resolved by an approved service agent, but the thermal pad requires a complete disassembly and the pad replacing, while the CPU heatsink is a relatively easy matter.

  • Mac mini internal hard drive not recognised during internet recovery

mac mini 2.3GHz OS X Lion
I turned on my comp and got the folder with the question mark. Went into recovery and am not able to do any of the proceedures. I can see something in the disk utility, but it is not mounted. I was able to recover an old internal drive connected with a SATA wire, but not what I was looking to do. Have had this less than 2 months. I wish apple had better steps to follow for recovery. Just want it to function the way it was bought. Any help is appreciated. First time posting!

Sounds like either a failed Hard Drive or other Hardware problem.
Contact Apple or your local AASP and make an appointment to have it looked at.

  • Mac Mini Internal Speaker and Airport Adapter

I have the 2008 Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz. I have been having problems with the internal speaker and the internal airport adapter.
    Speaker:
80% of the time, the internal speaker isn't working when booted into OS x, and when the mini is starting up it doesn't make the startup sound.
    Airport Adapter:
The signal drops to 1 bar all the time with the router but a couple feet away. It would start off as 4-5 bars and then drop to 1-2 bars and then stay there.
    Please Help!
    Thanks,
    Jimmy

    I FIGURED IT OUT!
To get this to work, you need to buy two things:
    1) Audio Hijack Pro software by RogueAmoeba, with the SoundFlower plugin.
    2) Griffin iMic.
Once you've installed both the hardware and software, do the following:
    1) In Hijack Pro, create a session with source type: audio device, and SoundFlower 2Ch as the input, and iMic as the output.
    2) Create a second session again with source type: audio device, and SoundFlower 2Ch as the input, but change the output to "Built-in Output."
    3) Click the "Hijack" button for both sessions, so Hijack Pro is hijacking audio from Soundflower and routing it to both outputs simultaneously.
    4) In System Preferences/Sound, change sound output to "SoundFlower 2Ch".

  • Mac Mini internal issue

I set up a new mini server and everything is working except I can't access the server/iMail internally. It works fine from outside the network. I'm assuming this is a router issue but can't figure it out. Externally when I type in www.example.com I can get to the server, internally it will not. If I type in the IP address 10.0.XX.XX when I'm on the network then I can get to the server. I have an Actiontec PK5000 DSL modem with time port behind that. The Actintec does not support loopback.....is that my issue and is there any way to correct it?

Thank you for the feedback, but I'm not seeing anything about DNS on the Time Port.
A router doesn't implement DNS services. An IP router routes IP packets. Some routers also include other features, such as DNS forwarding, DHCP, firewall services, NAT, and other features. This omnibus implementation can vary by device and by how a site implements the device, and that can lead to confusion and complexity, as DNS forwarding simply passes packets to a remote server, and there are DNS server settings for DHCP servers, for those gateway boxes that (also) provide DHCP. But few (no?) routers incorporate DNS servers.
The other confusing bit here: ISP DNS servers don't server DNS translations for hosts behind a NAT.
When there are no local DNS services, Mac OS X Server can set up a single-host DNS service, but (due to common confusion with the settings and the resulting configuration errors) that might not happen in all cases.
And if the local DNS isn't operational and correct, your server will encounter DNS errors.
To check your local DNS services, launch Terminal.app and issue the command +sudo changeip -checkhostname+ and see if you get some information on the host, and either an indication that DNS is OK, or that there are DNS errors. (The sudo will require you to enter an administrative password.)
Time Capsule and Airport devices are good residential routers, and can be deployed as good access points (APs) in larger (and small business) configurations. (It's not typical to run multiple WiFi routers. You can't move your connections among the devices, for instance. APs allow that.)
Someone once told me that the Time Port are router wanna bes.
They're entirely functional routers, and as APs. They're not particularly good choices as server gateways as they lack various server-oriented features; [here is what I look for with server gateways|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1724].
It probably works fine as a wireless router for a house but not for a server. I guess I need to look at upgrading it, eh?
You can [set up DNS on your Mac Mini Server|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] and entirely bypass the need to reflect the traffic at your gateway firewall, and resolve the local DNS server issues that your server (likely already) has.

  • Mac Mini 2011 Fan is Noisy During Streaming Video

Mac mini 2011 2.3 GZ. When I watch Youtube streaming video fullscreen or video chat with someone on Skype, the fan kicks into high gear and gets really noisy. Fan gets to about 5200 rpm and CPU up to 75C. I don't get the heat or fan noise during avi/Quicktime/VLC playback, or an Skype, audio alone. I don't recall this on my 2009 Mac Mini. Is this normal?

  • Migration assistant to copy from mac mini internal drive to second internal drive fails, 'not enough space'

I have a 2011 mac mini and I just installed a second internal HDD using an OWC data doubler kit. So now I have two internal HDD.
The original HDD is 750 GB and the new one is 1 TB. After the installation I manually formatted the 1 TB drive with one Mac OS Extended  (Journaled) partition.
I then installed a fresh copy of Mavericks on the new 1 TB and during the installation tried to use Migration Assistant to move my user account over (mainly to get all the iTunes and iPhoto stuff).
The original HDD 610 GB used, so 140 GB free.
Migration Assistant correctly detects the original HDD but when I try to copy things over it says there is not enough space.
Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do to get Migration Assistant to move my stuff from the original HDD over to the new one?

I feel like such an idiot. I had manually tried to copy files over using the command line before I found out about the Migration Assistant tool. My manual copy had used up 500 GB.
I deleted all of that and now I have no issues with the Migration Assistant.
    Sorry for taking your time!

  • Should my Mac Mini's fan be running continuously?

Last month, I purchased a new Mac Mini.  It runs Lion and sits on my desk in the dark most of the day.  But its fan runs continuously.  This means that it is relatively loud.  It does not go unnoticed.  Should its fan be running like this, even when I'm not using it?
Activity Monitor shows that there are no run-away processes.  Right now, for instance, the CPU is 65% idle.  My iStat Pro widget says that CPU is running at 175 degrees and the fan at just above 4100 rpm.  This just doesn't seem right.  I've only been listening to radio via iTunes, reading mail, looking at news online.
Thanks in advance for any advice people can give me on this matter.

This morning, right before I ran off to work, I reset the something-or-other, according to the instructions here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US, and this seems to have made a difference.  When I came home from work and logged into my machine, the Mac Mini was working happily and silently.

  • Mac-mini Internal Drive operating temperature

What temperature should my internal drives safely operate at?  I have an SSD, recently installed, plus the original 500GB internal SATA drive.  I'm getting readings of 56°C (138°F) at the moment, which DiskWarrior claims is too hot.  S.M.A.R.T., on the other hand, says both drives are fine.

    What model Mini?
Did the HD have a sensor taped to the drive?
What are other temps? Like ambient, CPU?
    What specific SSD?

  • Mac mini Intel Core Duo fan very loud and runs at high speed all the time.

I purchased an "Open box" Mac mini Intel Core Duo, 1.66Ghz, 2G ram, 80G HD and SD a few days ago from Fry's.
It runs beautifully except the fan is very loud compared to any Mac my family has ever had. It is so loud that we were thinking of putting it under the desk.
The fan runs constantly, and I mean all the time, at a high speed. You can really feel the air coming out the exhaust vents. The case is always cool to the touch as is the exhaust air.
My aunt bought a similar Mac mini (But only 512Mb ram) the same day. Her's is very quiet. The case feels just slightly warm, not unlike other Mac mini's I've seen.
Should my Mac mini's fan be running this way?
    Thanks,
    llulua
BTW: The "open box" was sealed with a Fry's label and it said that this had a new warranty. Yet, checking the serial number, it said that it had about 260 days left. I guess Fry's is backing it?
Also, someone told me that perhaps the main wire from the fan to the logic board is disconnected.

Since you have 2 gigs of memory, my thoughts are that when the party (Fry's or the origianl purchaser) upgraded the memory, they neglected to reattach the wire at the front of the Mini under the IR receptor at the right front corner that regulates the fan speed. This wire must be unattached in order to upgrade the memory, and is probably why the original person brought it back, because of the fan noise resulting from failing to reattach the wire. If that wire is left unattached, the fan runs continually at high speed to protect the CPU and system in general. If you do not want to use a putty knife to open the Mini, take it back to Fry's and ask someone who is Mac savvy to open it and reattach the small plastic receptacle at the end of the wire into its socket at the right front of the machine. When I go to Fry's, I am always concerned because the employees allow people to pry keys off of the Apple notebooks, so don't expect that their employees to know or care about anything Mac.

  • Broken Fan on 2011 Mac mini / If you are upgrading the hd in your mini please read

I need help with a broken fan. I broke the plastic plug off the fan and need help making sure i connect the wire to the correct blade. If someone is feeling really nice could you unscrew the fan, flip it over, and with the text on the sticker facing right side up(so that you can read it) tell me where each line connects. the top being number 1, below that being number 2 and so one. The connections on the logic board.... the closest to the ram being 1 the next being 2 and so on. I know this is a lot to ask, but it will be a huge help. Thank you in advance to anyone willing to take the time to do this.

  • Core Duo mac mini vs. Core 2 Duo iMac

I am interested in getting a new mac. I would like some advice from others about some of the new models. I do a lot of iPhoto with my Nikon D50 and iMovie and iDVD. I am assuming that a new Core Duo mac mini will be a significant upgrade from my current G4 mini, but I am wondering how much more performace I will see by getting a Core 2 Duo iMac. I am just not sure if I will notice the increased L2 cache or the better video card. again, there is nothing professional, but would like good performance. I am currently using a 19" Dell monitor that I am happy to keep, but will unload it if I get the Imac - not a problem.

The Core Duo Mac Mini lacks the graphics processor, and the RAM upgradeability of the iMac. Also it lacks the Firewire 800 you can get on the 24" model, and the larger hard drive capacity you can get on the iMac build to order. The Mac Mini internally can only get up to 200 GB internally, and with build to order, 500 GB can be put in the 17" and 20" iMac, and 750 GB in the 24" iMac. You'll find hard drive capacity a must in movie production, and the speed of the hard drive will be better. I'd even partition that hard drive to keep space for temporary files on movie projects. No need to get rid of your Dell display when getting the iMac as the iMac supports dual-display with a stretched desktop across both displays! Apple claims a 39% increase in speed for the MacBook Pro Core2Duo which was just released over a similarly configured MacBook Pro CoreDuo. Since iMovie and iDVD will be able to take advantage of the processor, I'd go for the Core2Duo in a heartbeat.
