Mac mini internal hard drive not recognised during internet recovery

mac mini 2.3GHz OS X Lion
I turned on my comp and got the folder with the question mark. Went into recovery and am not able to do any of the proceedures. I can see something in the disk utility, but it is not mounted. I was able to recover an old internal drive connected with a SATA wire, but not what I was looking to do. Have had this less than 2 months. I wish apple had better steps to follow for recovery. Just want it to function the way it was bought. Any help is appreciated. First time posting!

Sounds like either a failed Hard Drive or other Hardware problem.
Contact Apple or your local AASP and make an appointment to have it looked at.

  • Internal hard drive not recognised, but has a lot of data i need on it!HELP

    hi all
i'm on mac pro, quad core, leopard 10.5.2.
basically for some reason my hard drive was working fine, then one day last week i turned my mac back on and the hard drive will not initialize anymore.
i've gone into disk utility to try and repair disk. but it's listed there, not the name i gave it but 'disk1s1'.
i then go to verify disk and it comes up with this error.
    *Verifying volume “disk1s1”*
    * /dev/disk1s1*
*Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: fa31c0*
*Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.*
so i started looking for data recovery software, i found one called data rescue and its found alot of data on it, some i dont need (like stuff i deleted a long time ago), but i have 3 logic project folders full of projects i need to get finished for releasing!
but the thing with data rescue is... it is renaming all the fle aiff001, aiff002 etc etc, and for logic files this is no good as you need the files named as they were other wise it won't recognise the files and all the individual parts won't load up!
so i need a way of either making the mac recognize my hard drive again so i can drag everything off it and reformat it, or use a data recovery software that does not rename the files?
    can anybody please HELP!
    cheers
    BOOM!

SMART is largely snake oil in implementation and practice and it's entirely commonplace for a dead drive to report itself functional and vice versa. I've seen Seagates whose heads were audibly grinding against the platters claim they were functioning normally, and I've seen others that said they were failing go on to provide years of reliable service. SMART status is a ballpark guess at best.
yes I understand that but I wouldn't trust a drive with a non-verified SMART status. as you say, it might continue to function but chances are pretty high that it will soon fail altogether. that's already happened to the OP who should consider himself lucky he can get anything off the drive at all with Data rescue. professional data recovery is of course also an option but a very expensive one. at least when I tried to use a service like this once about 5 years ago they wanted to charge me a small fortune. not sure what that would cost these days...

  • Help unable to install OS X as hard drive not visible in internet recovery mode

    Hi
    I have a MacBook Pro
During use my screen froze and I had to force quit. Since then I have tried the following:
    Turning on in safe mode
Internet recovery - no mac hd or partition recovery drive are visible in disk utility only OS X base system
Unable to install maverick as there's no disc visible to select
If I try to verify the start up disc is greyed out
    Starting up with cmd r
    Tried to reset PRAM
Start up disc does not display anything
ALL TO NO AVAIL, is the hard drive defunct or is there anything else I can try ?
    Many thanks for your help
    Elie

See this thread, this is 3rd regarding recovery/restore - as a starting point.
Obviously it is easier if you have a couple backups, a drive you can use, and don't mind erasing the internal drive.
It is a lot easier then. And it would be easier if you didn't have a notebook. This forum is not MacBook Pro but the tower or workstation.

hard drive not recognized during windows server 2008 setup

    Hi,
Whether the hard disk is recognized in BIOS?
Connect it to another computer to see if it could be recognzied incase the cause is the disk itself. Also please check if it is really a RAID instead of a single hard disk - a single disk should be recognized directly while RAID cannot be recognized until
    a suitable driver is installed.

  • Photo library on Time Capsule and want iPhoto to recognise it rather than import to Mac Mini small Hard drive

As heading states, I have 100Gb of photos and want to have them "sorted" and viewable through iPhoto. at the moment when i add photos it is importing them from the TC to my mini's hard drive duplicating the pictures and using up valuable space. Is there a way of pointing iPhoto to the photo folder on TC as you would music and videos for iTunes library?

Yes there is but you shouldn't.
    Here's why:
    1. Is this a wireless connection? If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
    Problems with a Referenced Library
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How do you transfer music from an external hard drive into iTunes on a mac, but not write the music into the mac's internal hard drive?

I am trying to load an external library with about 700 gigs of music into iTunes on my mac, but of course my mac's inter hard drive is much less than that. Is there a way I can load the music onto iTunes without importing it into my computer? I use this hard drive for DJing so it is plugged in the majority of the time. I have iTunes 12.0.1.26 on a 2011 13" MacBook Pro.

Do you use both the internal and external drives for storing music or just the external drive?  If both, hold down the option key while dragging media to iTunes to get it to leave the media where it is and add the track location information to iTunes.  A better solution would be to relocate the entire iTunes library to the external drive and run it all from one place.  This will also make it easier to make backups of the library as you should since you are using this in a professional capacity and your livelihood depends upon it.  We can provide advice on how to do this once we know more about your setup (is there an existing library already, and where?)

  • IMac G5 Internal Hard Drive Not Recognized

I shut down my iMac G5 with the power button and not through the typical shutdown procedure once and then when it booted up it would not get past the gray screen. I eventually used the Leopard DVD to try to boot it and was able to get to disk utility to look at the drive. I tried to repair the drive but then the machine froze and I had to restart once more. Now the internal hard drive isn't recognized or seen at all. I actually switched out the SATA hard drive with another spare I had and that was not recognized either. I can get the mac to recognize the installation DVD still so I know my computer still functions properly but I just need it to recognize the drive now. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this?

Have you access to DiskWarrior or TechToolPro? Either of those might fix your problem otherwise, try booting from the Apple Hardware Test on your install disc and see what it says.

  • Internal Hard Drive Not Appearing in Finder

I just had to do a reboot of my Mac Pro as Final Cut Pro kept locking up and when the computer was back up, one of my Western Digital 2 TB internal hard drives is missing!  When I restart, I got a message saying something like the disc inserted cannot be used.  It had 3 options and the first time I hit eject thinking it was talking about a DVD, then when I rebooted again I hit the details button and it pulled up Disk Utility.  I can see my HD in the menu but when I click on it is says unmounted.  The other 2 TB WD Hard drive is working fine.  Do I need to click on the verify disk or repair disk button?  What should I do? I have quite a bit of video footage on this drive that is missing so I'm super worried I will lose the videos!

The drive is a goner otherwise though.  Since I was solely using this failed drive recently, I may have just worn it out, which is too bad, even though I worked with an identical 2 TB WD internal drive earlier this year and never had problems with that one.
Drives shouldn't just wear out from use, at least not in a reasonable number of years. They are designed for that. Drives however do fail. However, that drive is more likely to be badly corrupted than it is to be mechanically failing. When you are finished grabbing the data off it, use Disk Utility to zero it out. If it can successfully be zeroed out then it is most likely fine to continue to use.

  • Internal hard drives not mounting on startup

Problem: I recently did a clean install of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on my Early 2008 Mac Pro. Since then, one or more of my four internal hard drives will not mount at startup, and it's seemingly random which ones will or won't mount; it differs from one startup to the next. Obviously, the boot drive starts up, but the remaining three drives are hit-or-miss.
Troubleshooting So Far: I can open Disk Utility and mount the disk(s) manually, and when I click Verify Disk, the hardware checks out okay. After my most recent startup, I brought up the System Log in Terminal (sudo syslog -B) and found this entry for one disk ("Media 1") that did not mount:

There were no entries for the disks that mounted correctly. Can anyone make sense of this for me? The system jargon is a little beyond me.
    Thanks for your help!

Is "Media 1" the name of the volume, or is it just "Media"?

    Hi,
We won't concern about RPM, faster (more rpm) is better. The HDD's are much, much, much, much cheaper now. They were more expensive during a flood in Thailand few yours back. Yes, you can use WD HDD for your computer. You can pick one from the following list:

  • Time Capsule internal hard drive not visible

I have one of the older 500GB TC. It worked fine for a year then I decided to wipe the hard drive to erase the contents. I stopped the process in the middle of clearing the hard drive because it was going on about 8 hours. Every since then the TC works fine as a wireless router, but the internal hard drive is not visible. It won't do any back ups and it's not visible in the Airport program.
    Any suggestions?

  • How do I make an internal hard drive not mount at startup?

I have an internal hard drive hooked to an ACARD ATA RAID controller that I use for backup purposes, and I would like to mount and unmount it manually. Disk Utility in OS9 and earlier had an option not to mount a disk at startup, but I see no such option in OS X.
I can manually unmount the drive in Disk Utility, but it always comes back up when I reboot. How can I keep the drive from mounting upon reboot?

I discovered this in a quick internet search.

  • Time machine will not backup to empty external hard drive after replacing Mac's internal hard drive and restoring

First - I live in a tiny fishing village in Belize, so getting support here is virtually non-existent. There is no one else in my village who even uses a Mac. Recently, my hard drive in my 2012 Macbook Pro 13" went bad (said it suffered a "shock"?) and I was traveling to Cozumel, Mexico, so had it replaced there. We used an external hard drive backup to restore the data to it's last time machine backup (October of 2014). Everything was working fine, until I returned home, added some pictures, and wanted to do a fresh backup. Now, time machine will start the backup, but gets about 113,000 of 181,000 done, and it locks up. I can do nothing - everything freezes, and I have to eventually power down the computer. I even tried deleting the old backup from the external hard drive, erasing it completely, and reformatting the external hard drive using disk utility. Still locking up. It is a 5 GB external hard drive, so space shouldn't be an issue, and it was backed up to the same external hard drive previously with no issues. I'm still running Mavericks, and don't want to try to upgrade to Yosemite until I can be sure I have a backup of my old data and pictures. I am a writer, and use that to make my meager living LOL
I'm stumped. I've looked through the files endlessly but can't find anything similar to my issue. Any suggestions? I know just enough to be dangerous, and don't want to lose everything we worked so hard to retrieve when my hard drive crashed last month.
    Thanks!

SMH5206 - I tried letting it sit and crank overnight twice. First time I thought it was my error causing it to lock up. Now I know better. I haven't changed any of my time machine settings - and actually never used time machine regularly. Only reason I had a fresh backup from last Oct was because I did one before I upgraded to mavericks. Everything worked fine then - and we used that to restore when the hard drive crashed and was replaced. I have actually deleted hundreds of pictures off my hard drive and one entire user, so it should actually be a much smaller backup - so if it did it before on the same external hard disk, I don't understand why it won't now.  I'm really confused.
Kahjot - the external hard drive is the same one I backed up to previously - and I have completely erased it and reformatted, and the information I'm backing up now is less, so there should be no reason why it doesn't have enough room now, when there is actually less information on my current hard drive (see my reply to SMH5206). When I plug it in, it says it is a 500.07 GB WD "My Passport"
I've even tried to have time machine only backup certain files, and not the whole thing. Still locking up.
I'm sure it's my error somewhere, - I just don't know how or where

  • External Hard Drives not recognised

I have a few different external hard drives on which I have stored photos and movies etc. I used to keep them attached and on all the time, but decided some time back it might be better to leave them off until required. I now have OSX 10.5.8 on my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro and neither will recognise my external hard drives. 1 is a LaCie and the other a iOmega.
Have tried a reboot on both machines with the drives switch on, and off, disconnected and re-connected cables, nothing works, they just don't appear!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Maybe the following will help....
Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal PRAM battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple KB HT1317 on getting FireWire to work.
