Mac Mini is a let down

Got a phone call from my family again, seems like they are having more trouble with the Mac Mini.
I downloaded some demos to my flash-drive using my PC, my connection is faster on my laptop, can download Halo Demo in a few minutes, much faster than what my family has, 56k, with the Mac Mini, it is still as slow as downloading anything when they used their old iMac.
Anyway, I gave them a demo of Halo and they said there was a message saying something like, "not enough room, 150 MB is needed" and I guess from what they told me, the Mac Mini they got had only 1 GB of hard drive memory, which is pretty low, I mean no wonder, it is a "mini" computer, but I still expected more. I am kind of disappointed for them.
To make things work, I guess they also need the admin password, which I suppose I kind of subtly suggested for security reasons, as so they do not accidentally install/download anything that could hurt their computer, or them.
On top of all that is their mail is still not working and it took them like 2 hours to get it working.
The biggest issue now however is they need to install OS 9 and the Mac Mini did not come with OS 9.
WHAT IS UP WITH THAT???
SINCE WHEN DID APPLE DENY OS 9???
THAT WAS STANDARD IN MY DAY.
Geeze, Apple.
Perhaps I can use the iBook CDs or something. I am too tired to think straight now. Somebody please help me with these problems. In the meantime I will see if I can get over to them and take a look at it myself.

You are correct. The program that they attempted to install was Starcraft and Starcraft: Brood War. I purchased the game nearly 8 years ago and the CD still works fine because I installed it a few days ago on the PC laptop I am using. I managed to get all the updates needed from Battle.net. I gave the CDs to them so they can play against me and prepare for the upcoming release of Starcraft 2. W00t! Starcraft 2!
Apparently however Starcraft is "so old" that it needs to be run on Mac OS 9 or at least needs to be run on Mac OS 9 while running Mac OS X, in a manner of speaking, where you click on an Mac OS 9 application and then that window box shows that Mac OS 9 is loading, all while on the Mac OS X desktop.
There is that possibility it might screw up the Mac Mini, however I do not see why, because I did something like this similar, but with an iBook and it worked perfectly. Then again, Mac Minis are NOT iBooks.
You assume correctly, they get internet through the phone line which goes into a router box and the ethernet cord comes out and connects to the Mac Mini. Which is strange, I thought the Mac Mini DID come with an internal modem...however I should know better, hence the name "mini". The Mac Mini appears to be a MINOR step up from their old iMac, which one of them uses for writing word documents or something. Speaking of which, I found out when I first looked at the Mac Mini when I visited them that Apple did not include any word software, like Appleworks or Clarisworks.
God, Apple is getting sloppy. Good thing the Mac Mini was a GIFT. I would hate to be a poor sap to actually purchase the piece of poop, NO OFFENSE!!!
WHAT!? I never said their e-mail was working. It is still NOT working. Well it is really the MAIL on the Mac Mini that is not working, same thing, they can not access their e-mail.

OR look at this:
My family's Mac Mini Mac OS 10.5 mail is not working. From what the told me, something happened to the mail icon and it was replaced by a question mark. One day the mail icon stopped working. They attempted to reinstall the software using the CDs that came with the Mac Mini, but it did not work.
In addition, I talked to them earlier about upgrading to 10.5.3, but I presume that this mail problem is getting in the way of that, because they said they tried to download 10.5.1 but the site would not let them, or something like that.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • I upgraded RAM to 16gb in my i7 mid 2011 mac mini and it shuts down at night

I have a mid 2011 mac mini i7.  Below are the specs on memory, hardware, and solid state.  I also have Yosemite installed - everything is current. version 10.10.2
I've had 8gb installed since I bought it.  And I just purchased 2 sticks of Crucial RAM 8gbx2.
Everything is fine but when I go to bed and wake in the morning, the system will not wake-up.  I have fresh batteries in the keyboard and mouse.  The system mini is warm on top - not cold or hot.  So it does not seem asleep.  I have pressed the button on the mac mini once and thought it was alseep...nothing happens.  I just can't get it back up after it seems asleep at night.
The only way I can get the system going again is pulling the power plug.  This has happened each night since installing the RAM.  Oh, I also have held the power button down for 5 seconds trying to do a hard reset.  Nothing
I was really excited to get the system up and running with 16gb but hate trouble.  I am not a tech expert....
I have not changed any settings.  And if it was asleep, why isn't it waking?
Does anyone have any ideas here?

    Thank you for your help.
I did both resets you offer in the link above and then I went to bed last night.
In the morning, when I hit the keyboard, it paused and came to light....and said there was a problem and it automatically reset and re-booted from a blank screen (not main screen).  This was the screen after the reboot.  The full error info is listed below the image.

  • Mac Mini sound continually turning down

My mac mini sound is continually turning down. When I hit the sound up button, the sound goes up for a millisecond and then goes back down. It is really annoying because the sound up icon is in the middle of my screen. This problem has been occurring on and off for a week now.

Ok I found out how to fix it. I deleted my audio cache and it hasn't done it again.

  • Mac mini keeps displaying shut down message every 10 minutes help?

My mac mini 320 gb machine with the cd drive in it from the 2010 model keeps displaying the shut down message every time minutes and I don't have enough time to check everything and i need some help. Thanks

Here is a link to a system preference you can check.http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4014?viewlocale=en_US
    It is a security feature.
You did not mention it but are you using a movie player other than the provide DVD player or iTunes.  For example VLC.  If you are, for some reason OS X does not know what is going on, i.e. watching a movie, so it thinks you left.  So, after 10mins it trys to log off.  The annoying part is that it will not do a force log off if there are programs running.  Well atleast it is annoying to me.
    Good Luck,
    C.

I was reluctant to take the "sudo halt" terminal suggestion since a warning loomed over the danger of losing data.
I was unable to post a copy of the code sequences suggested by TITOMAX since the problem was solved by the time I saw his post.
I received an answer from Apple.
I was able to halt display of start up and shut down code by shutting the Mac mini down and starting the machine while holding down  "cmd option PR" keys until the computer gave the normal start sound followed by a repeat of the start sound. This procedure led to a normal start up process and also a normal shut down process without the display of the "start up code" during start up or the display of the "shut down code" during shut down.
By the way, holding down the "cmd option R" keys with my left hand while pressing the Mac mini start button with my right hand and quickly getting my right hand in place to hold the "P" key was tricky, but only took two tries to achieve success.
I was concerned that the display of those lines of code was an indicator of an impending problem. It turned out to be an unintended feature following replacement of the logic board.
By the way, Apple Care has been wortwhile for me.

Thanks for the report, that's called a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

  • My mac mini doesn't shut down after installing mountain lion?

Right after i installed mountain lion and checked all the new features, I closed all applications, clear ram, clear cache, clear print queue, made sure that nothing was running when i logged out(only one 1 user was logged on.) I shut down and it seemed normal until the mac mini restarted, saying there was a problem and the normal error report appeared on screen when everything rebooted(after I log back on.) I'm angry. Really what should I do, I just bought this on December 2011( i7 mac mini sandy bridge) of last year. I hope apple releases an update to fix this problem.
My first attempt was to go to disk utility and fixed it, it worked I was able to shut down. However after that it started to go back to the way it was and it still wont shut down. Yes Im able to do everything else like put the hardrive to sleep(yes it goes to sleep I made sure) and force closing applications. Right now Im going to attempt doing what I did before but I will appreciate if a representaive or an apple veteran would give me advice or some useful information on how to fix this problem.
This happened 8/18/2012 at 6:57(when I installed Mountain lion and checked.)

  • New Mac Mini slows my internet down to dialup speeds?

I recently purchased a new Mac Mini along with a new 27" Mac display.  As soon as I hooked it up and turned on WiFi, my in home interent connection (wired and unwired) slowed down to .019Mpbs!  I tried bypassing the router and hardwiring the Mac Mini directly to the modem, tried hardwiring to the Lynksys modem...still very slow.  As soon as I turn Wifi off on the Mac Mini, and remove the Mini from the network, all my other devices speed right back up to 2Mbps. I have several iOS devices in the home, a MacBook Air and a PC.
I have seen other's comments on other boards about bluetooth keyboard and trackpad.  I am using both of these, but manipulating these settings has not helped.
Would purchasing a new Apple AirPort AC 2 TB router/hardrive help?  Could my 2 year old Lynksys router (which works fine with everything else) be the problem?  Are there settings in the MacMini that need to be changed?
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Jay

Ok, i was faced with this issue back in 2010 with my first Mac Mini. May i ask who your current internet service provider is? Mine was BT at the time and the router they provided was a 2wire! I am almost 100% sure that the router is at fault here! If it was your ISP that provided you with the router then call them to see if they can help. If you purchased it from a vendor then you will need to make contact with Linksys. What you need to ask for who ever it may be is a firmware update for your specific router in order for it to support a Macintosh. At the time of this this dilemma, BT could not help as my 2wire router did not have a firmware update available in order to support my Mac! I then made contact with Apple Support and they suggested i install a download manager. Please note that the DM manager i installed was tailored to fix this specific issue, other DM's most likely will not work! Was not the best solution but never the less this solved the problem! I wish i could tell you the name of this software but unfortunately i do not remember. However i am sure Apple Support can point you in the rite direction if you explain this scenario to them! I was on that network for a very short while, a couple of days i think so am not sure if this fix is a good longterm solution. However this may be the only solution you have unless you purchase a new router!
    Best of Luck!

  • Mac Mini wont stay shut down

Hi. I have a mac mini. I bought it about april of '07. When i shut down my mac mini, it stays off for about five minutes and then turns back on automatically.
    anyone have this issue before?
    im running Mac OS X v 10.4.11

Open the Accounts preferecne pane and select your account. Click the Login Items tab. In the list you will then see, you should see one or more EyeTV applications (I can't recall the exact names, but it's clear what they are). Click to select it (or them) and then click the '-' button beneath the window to remove them.
That will delete the EyeTV scheduler/helper that is responsible for auto-waking systems.
Don't just UNcheck the application(s) because that merely hides them!

  • My Mac Mini keeps shutting itself down; why?

    Hello,
When I woke up this morning, I went to use my new Mac Mini. For some reason, it will appear on the monitor for about five seconds, and then nothing will show on the monitor at all. Attempting to restart the Mac Mini only finds it doing the same thing. I am wondering why?
    T.

The very first computer I ever had was an 8086; it came with a 5 1/4 in drive and little else. One of the floppies it came with had? Windows 1.0. The thing had precious little memory, no hard drive, and if you ever wanted to do anything with it you had better be addicted to coffee.
The printer I had literally cranked; it was the loudest thing I have ever heard and it made the stand I had it on rock and sway back and forth. When the 8088 came it out was like, 'Ooooo!' And when the first 286 came out? Yikes - it was like a revolution or something. The 486 I had was something I kept for years; I actually wrote a number of college papers on these computers.
When Windows 3.0 was released it was heaven sent or something - it was as if color had finally emerged into the world, as well as an operating system you could actually do something with. At about the same time, I remember my father using a little Mac with a tiny, tiny little screen that went, 'Eeep!' whenever he messed up something.
The tiny screen on that Mac is what kept me leaning towards Windows. My thought at the time was, 'My God - how will I ever be able to see to write papers on that tiny screen?' Now I look back on those days and wonder about how differently things may have gone if I had chosen to use Mac computers.
Oh well. I am enjoying the heck out of this Mac Mini; I only wish I could afford the Mac laptop I want too.
Thanks for the reply, it's not often I run into someone who even knows what an 8088 is.
    Tom.

  • Mac Mini 2009 massive slow down but only even 4-5 mins?!?

I have a issue where I get the spinning beach ball of death and it lasts for about 20-30 secs, but I get this every 4-5 mins
I have used CleanMyMac to remove all the crap and run all the cleaning and maintence tasks on Onyx to clear the computer up; to be fair it is kept very clean most of the time anyway.
I have checked the hard drive and corrected all permissions as well as verifying the drive itself.
I have run a Memtest 2 pass on the RAM and had no errors.
Both of these were done in single user mode from boot using the Terminal.
I am running a 2009 Mac Mini with a 2.6 Core2Duo, 6Ghz RAM, 160GB SSD drive. It is plugged in via the mini display port to an HD Tv and connected through the optical port to an amp for audio. I am using the wireless bluetooth Mac keyboard and Magic Mouse.
    Any suggestions would be great

Thanks for the response by I have already gone through these processes and determined that there is no application or process filling the CPU cycles or RAM and that I have adiquete drive space and resources to do what I need to do.
I t seems to happen on everything; be it opening Finder or scrolling on a webpage or just clikcing the Bluetooth icon at the top of the screen. Just every few minutes I get the beachball. I can move the beachball around but not click anything or do anything. Then after 20 secs or so it is back to normal and as fast as ever.
    However, 4 or 5 mins later  ....

  • My new mac Mini (Feb, 2013) shuts down when we are listening to iTunes or Pandora.  Any thoughts?

After listing to iTunes or Pandora, our mini shuts down and requires us to log in again.  The mini was purchased in Feb of this year.  Any thoughts?

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Advanced... ▹ Log out after … minutes of inactivity: Off
If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, you may need to click it to unlock the settings. Enter your login password when prompted.
Also check the Energy Saver preference pane for scheduled logouts or shutdowns.

  • My Mac Mini Won't Shut Down Properly

I recently upgraded to 10.6.2 after buying a mac wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Now I keep getting this problem where the OS won't shut down.
One of the symptoms is that when I move the mouse to the area at the top right of the screen with the clock, volume and wifi icons (is there a name for that?) I just get a spinning beach ball. The clock has stopped too! Also the volume controls from the keyboard don't work any more, even the remote control stops working. I can't shut down or sleep the computer, even 'about my mac' doesn't work.
Other applications seem to work OK and in Activity Monitor I don't see any unresponsive apps.
This hanging doesn't start straight away and two things that have set it off have been using the volume controls and when I tried to press ⌘-space to search for something.
I really don't know where to begin!

Still doing it! I disconnected all the USB peripherals and that was fine for a while, also removed stuff out of the task bar thing that I wasn't using.
Then re-connected the USB hub and it happened again... maybe it's something to do with that or just bad luck...
