Mac Mini & iSight

I have two Mac Minis, each connected to different iSight cameras. I use the iSight and Mac Mini to connect and talk to friends using Skype.
While talking, I frequently loose the mirophone function of the iSight. The solution is to unplug the iSight from the Mac Mini; sometimes only a reboot resolves.
This happens with both computers and both iSight cameras. Therefore, the likelihood of a "random" hardware problem is very small.
I am surprised that no one seems to raise this issue and all behave as if the iSight works properly.
Does anyone have any idea?

Hello all,
Only those who are using two Mac minis can have "exactly" the same problem as Vitor.
If you do not have a suggested solution for Vitor, I suggest that you post your problem in your own new thread. That way, your question can get the individual attention that it deserves.
Having come this far, if your testing shows that your problem is with your mini or your iSight, and if you have tried all the suggestions offered to Vitor, take your mini, your iSight. and your Firewire cable to your Apple-Authorized Service Provider. There are no user serviceable parts inside iSight. I suggest you take your mini, too, because your mini may need internal hardware repair.
If your testing shows that the problem is with Skype rather than with your iSight, you can take advantage of Skype's comprehensive Help features. For instance, one of Skype's Troubleshooter topics is "My mic is not working, no one can hear me."
If Skype's Troubleshooter does not help you with your Skype-specific problem, some of the other Skype Help options will. If:(1) you have tried all the suggestions offered to Vitor, and if
(2) your iSight works with applications other thank Skype, but
(3) your problems with Skype continue, your problem is with Skype, not with iSight.
Try searching for answers in the Skype Forums.
If you cannot find answers with a search, post your Skype-specific problem in the Skype for Mac OS X forum. You may get better suggestions from OS X users who also use Skype.
If the Skype forums fail you, too, Contact Skype Customer Support for a direct response to your particular problem from Skype Technical Support.
Cheers,
Jim

Can it be done?
I just love the look of the iSight. Can it be hooked up to new Mac mini with FW 800. I read 400 to 800?
Any one doing it? Let know your thoughts.
Thank you all for you help and have a great day.

Yes.

Yes.
All you need do is follow the instructions in the iSight User Guide (Manual) that came with your old external iSight.
To connect to your old Firewire 400 iSight to your new mini's Firewire 800 port, you will need a FW400-800 adapter or cable. If you have trouble, your connection is the first thing to check. Troubleshoot using http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090.
Be aware of Possible Conflicts with Firewire iSight. If you encounter such problems with your mini system and cannot resolve them, you can workaround the Firewire issues by using a Mac compatible USB external camera.

Here is one example: isight in a mac mini late 2012: Apple Support Communities
You can search Discussions for more if you like.

Of course, you are free to buy whatever you choose. However, if your preference is based primarily on appearance, you might be interested in the Liquid Digital webcam . Although it looks similar to the long-discontinued external iSight, it offers USB's less troublesome connection, a higher hardware resolution sensor than the old iSight's 640x480, and a new cam warranty.

• Unable to record just audio with Mac Mini - no isight

I am trying to use Podcast Capture on a mac mini connected to a generic monitor (no isight) and it is unable to initialize the audio subsystem. I am assuming this has to do with it needing a video camera, but surely that isn't required to record an audio only podcast. I have a microphone plugged into the line in and it works successfully in Garageband. Please help!

Take a look at Soundflower, which will allow you to record audio from any source:

• What cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me

what cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me

You need either a FireWire 800 to FW 400 cable or a FR 800 (male)/FW(female) adopter.
However. it the Mini (note that you still have the late 2012 Mini, Apple has not updated the Mini since then) has Mavericks it may not work satisfactorily. I tried it on my 2102 and I get abount 1 frame every 20 seconds. Another uses posted same problem.
However, it it work fine on my late 2009 Mini with Mavericks

• Will old iSight camera work with new Mac mini?

will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini? If so what adapters will I need?

Matthewlopez wrote: will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini?...
Yes (if the old external iSight works.)
Apple's long ago discontinued Firewire External iSights were great webcams, but they are old (as consumer electronics go) and some may have had pretty rough treatment. Even NOS (new old stock) items may have been damaged in storage or handling.
If you have access to an external iSight, you can test it using the suggestions from this page: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html. To reduce the possibility of conflicts for old Firewire iSights, I suggest you disconnect all other Firewire peripherals until you get your external iSight working with your mini. Then connect other needed items one at a time and test each to determine whether you can use any without conflict.
If you are considering buying an external iSight now, a new webcam (with warranty) may be a better choice. Many available alternatives are listed here: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
If you want more examples of external iSight and newer minis, take a look at some of the results of this search for your question.
Matthewlopez wrote: ... If so what adapters will I need?
You will need a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter. This adapter offers only a Firewire 800 connection.
The Firewire connection on old external iSights is a Firewire 400 connector. Therefore, you need some way to connect to the FW800 connector on your adapter:
• To use the FW400 6pin-6pin cable that comes with iSight, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter
      like one of these:
      http://tinyurl.com/ydsbb6m  (I use this one.)
      http://tinyurl.com/cgll7o
      http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
• This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/ (I use this one.)
• Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:

with a firewire 400-800 if it will what software do i need to take pictures and videos.
Many Thanks

Will a external apple isight work with the latest mac mini.
Yes (if the external iSight works.)
External iSights are great webcams, but they are getting old (as consumer electronics go) and some have had pretty rough treatment. You can test yours using the suggestions from this page:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
I suggest you disconnect other Firewire devices until you get your external iSight working with your mini.
If you do not already have an external iSight and are considering buying one now,
a new webcam (with warranty) may be a better choice.
Many available alternatives are listed here: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/

Use one of the following ways to connect your FW400 external iSight to a FW800 Mac port:
• To use the FW400 6pin-6pin cable that comes with iSight, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter
      like one of these:

• This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/TP320LL/A (I use this one.)
• Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:

I suggest you disconnect other Firewire devices until you get external iSight working with your mini. Once iSight works when it is the only FW connected device, you can try connecting other Firewire devices to determine whehter you can use any of them without conflict.
... if it will what software do i need to take pictures and videos.
With your 10.6.3 mini, you can use QuickTime X, iChat, Photo Booth, iMovie, and some of the other apps that are installed with OS X. Your Mac's Help for each of these apps can tell you how to use them with iSight (or other connected cameras.)
Some more apps you can use are shown in this list:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html
The web links for each app gives details on what functions is offers with your webcam.

• External iSight mic not working with facetime. Snow Leopard, mac mini w/ firewire v1.0.2, 800/400 firewire adapter

External iSight camera connected via Firewire adapter 800/400 to a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard - a visual signal comes up for iChat and FaceTime, only sometimes does a video signal comes up for PhotoBooth, always no sound for any of the applications. System Preferences "Sound" shows "Input Level" set around 75%, however only periodically do I see blue bar move, almost like a short in the cable, but the adapter is new. Firewire firmware is v1.0.2. Tried to use firewire updater to get 1.0.3, but updater won't update for Snow Leopard. For being advertized as the world's most advanced OS, seems like Apple OS could at least work with Apple External iSight camera ! Any help much appreciated on fixing the missing sound.

This means that my Firewire 400 ports on the display are no longer supported by the computer?
They need a FireWire connection to the computer. With older computers, the FireWire cable from the display would plug in to a computer FW400 port to provide the connection. With FW800 only computers, you need the adapter.

• Anyone know how to get external iSight camera sound to function on 2011 Mac mini with Lion?

I recently helped my Mom upgrade from an older Mac mini to a 2011 model, and the external iSight camera shows video but has no sound. She can see and hear me through both iChat and FaceTime, but I can only see her.
I have checked the source for the mic in FaceTime and iChat preferences as well as the System Preferences, and I can see the monitor responding to input, but it is not sending the sound.

(1) You're welcome! We will be eager to see how it works for you.
(2) If iChat can't access your external iSight, there is something wrong.
• If Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
suggestions do not help you, continue with the following.
• Use Disk Utility to repair permissions and then
download and apply the 10.7.2 Combo Update:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1459
• Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
that completes the Combo update.
(3) If your mini does not have a Firewire 400 port, also check
your connections. Options I know for ways to connect
a FW400 external iSight to a FW800 Mac port:
• This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/TU942LL/A (I use this one.)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097
• To use your FW400 6pin-6pin cable, you can use
a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these: http://tinyurl.com/ydsbb6m
(I successfully use this one, too.)

• Older iSight (Firewire 400) on New Mac Mini Intel (Firewire 800)?

Hi! I have an older iSight camera (circa 2003), model number A1023/EMC no. 1950, which uses the older FIrewire 400. It was purchased with one of the first gen Mac Mini's (PowerPC) which I still have.
I've upgraded and now have a new Mini with an Intel Core 2 Duo, and the newer Firewire 800 port. I have a Firewire 400->800 adapter, and when I plug the iSight in, the green light on the camera lights up, but then goes off. The system doesn't recognize the camera (System Profiler/Hardware/FIrewire). iChat doesn't see a camera.
This is the adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HMTV1I/ref=oxya_ohproduct
Under the profiler/firewire, I see " Firewire Bus: Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec" but no entries for the camera.
Is the problem in the adapter? The computer, or the camera? Is there a way to force the Firewire 800 port speed down to 400? Don't know what to do. Thanks for any advice! --michael

Hello michael
Connecting your iNtel min's Firewire to any Firewire 400 cable automatically sets the correct speed.
If your iSight and cable will work with other Macs and if Firewire 800 devices will work with your new mini, perhaps your new adapter is faulty.
My method for verifying external iSight function is explained here:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
You will need to add your adapter to the other connectivity devices (ports & cables) that must be tested.
If other Firewire devices can be recognized by your new mini, the next tests I would suggest is to connect your adapter, FW-800 cable, and iSight to your old mini to see whether it still works there. If not, and if you have reset your iNtel mini's Firewire ports, the cable or adapter you have may be defective.
If iSight works with the new cable and adapter on the old mini but not with the iNtel one, apply all relevant suggestions from Apple's iSight Troubleshooting article to your new mini:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
The reset suggested there sometimes restores proper iSight function.
One other possibility is that a different brand of FW800 cable might work for you. Depending on which FW800 cable you are using, this thread may be of interest:

• External iSight and Mac Mini 2011

I always loved the industrial design on the external isight and would like to buy one. How ever will it still work with my 2011 mac mini? And which isight revision should I look for? What are the differences among them?

(1) If the old iSight you buy still works, it should work with your Mac mini.
(But see ¶s 2. & 3. below.)
To connect the FW400 external iSight to your FW800 mini, you will need a Firewire 400-800 cable or adapter. I suggest you have more than one of these so you can test whether any problem you encounter might be due to a bad connector.
Any working one(s) of something like those listed here should work to connect a FW400 external iSight:
• This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/H7041ZM/A (I use this one.)
• Some users report that this low-priced alternative cable works:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097
• To use a FW400 6pin-6pin cable like that which came with external iSights, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:
http://tinyurl.com/ydsbb6m  (I successfully use this one, too.)
If you encounter a problem, see Apple's troubleshooting suggestions here:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
(2) I understand your attraction to the appearance of external iSight.
However, if I were buying another webcam today, I'd buy a new UVC (USB) webcam that has a warranty. Based on my budget and the camera feature I wanted, I would select a compatible camera like one of those discussed here:
http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
My external iSights (I have two) are great webcams, but they are getting old (as consumer electronics go.) Both of mine still work as well as they did when they were new. However, some previously owned iSights may have suffered pretty rough treatment, and the only way to know whether any currently available external iSight works properly is to test it. If you still want to consider buying an External iSight, I suggest that you physically examine and test it on your system before you buy using the suggestions from this page:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
If you cannot try the external iSight before you buy, perhaps a trusted seller will give you a warranty for return or exchange privileges if the iSight will not work properly with your system.
(3) Additionally, unlike USB webcams, external iSight can be finicky about sharing a Firewire connection.
Chaining external iSight with other Firewire devices on the same Firewire ports often causes function problems. Because your mini has only one Firewire port, If your system includes other Firewire devices, you would most likely need to disconnect them in order to successfully use an external iSight with your mini.
For more info, see http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage6.html
(4) Info on iSight model versions: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage10.html
Which particular model revision would be much less important to me than being able to test an external iSight to make certain it works with your system.
If you use an Apple Cinema Display, the RevC's magnetic mount may be desirable. However, other mounting solutions are possible: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage9.html
(5) Your system info shows Windows® 7.
If you are considering using an external iSight with a PC, you should reconsider. More info: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage12.html

• Can someone tell me how to install webcam isight A1023 on my mac mini with OS 10.8

Please help me to install my webcam isight A1023 on my mac mini with OS 10.8

All you need do is follow the instructions in the iSight User Guide (Manual) that came with your old external iSight.
Neither your system info nor your post identify which Mac mini you use. If your mini is a newer model that has only a Firewire 800 port, and, if you don't already have one that works, you will need a FW400-800 adapter or cable.
Be aware of Possible Conflicts with Firewire iSight. If you encounter such problems with your mini system and cannot resolve them, you can workaround the Firewire issues by using a Mac compatible USB external camera.

• No iSight Audio with 2010 Mac Mini (OS X 6.6)

I have a Mac Mini running from my LCD TV, and want to iChat with my family on the weekends, but the 2005 vintage external (firewire w/ 6-9 pin adapter) iSight will not generate any audio in iChat or if I make a Photo Booth movie. The picture works fine over iChat, but my family on the other end get no audio feed.
The iSight is on with a green light. I get a good picture on my screen. I have the iSight selected as my (microphone) audio source on the Mini Sys Preferences and in iChat. I do not get any audio registered on the screen when I try a sound check.
To troubleshoot, have have hooked the iSight up to my 2009 iMac & it works perfectly, audio & video. Both my iMac and Mini have all the same OS and Firewire drivers. I've also hooked up an old Sony Handycam with 4-9 pin firewire to the Mini & its audio/video work just fine.
So I think I've ruled out problems with the iSight hardware and software drivers. The problem seems to be in the Mini or the 6-9 Belkin firewire adapter... Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix?
Thanks.

I do not use mini or LCD TV, so I do not "experience this." However, you have done some great troubleshooting. You are most likely correct that your problem is in the mini or the adapter. Here are some ideas you can consider:
(1) If you have not already checked this, connect your iSight and check the "+Input volume:+" setting in your mini's System Preferences... > Sound > Input.
(2) You can test the adapter by trying it with some other FW400 Mac. If it works on another Mac but not on yours, the problem may be in the physical port connections of your mini.
A second best way is to get some more adapters and or 6-pin/9-pin FW cables and see if one of them work with your iSight and mini. The chances of more than one connector being bad would seem to be fairly low. If three do not work, I would think it conclusive that the connector is not the problem.
(3) If the problem remains, try resetting your mini's Firewire port:
     • Shut down.
     • Disconnect all cables and peripherals from your mini.
     • Wait 15-30 minutes.
     • Reconnect necessary items and reboot mini.
     • Connect iSight and test.
     • Reconnect any other items or cables.
(4) I do not know how you have connected your LCD TV and sound&nbps;output to your mini. The TV connection might be causing a conflict.
If you do not have access to an Apple monitor with which to test, take your mini and iSight to your Apple Service Provider and ask him to test it.
