Mac Mini kernel panic pulled HD randomly unmounts in external enclosure

OK, I have a mac mini A1176 that I'd been through all of the tests and fixes on. It was having the ACPI kernel panic, I ran disk utility first aid, crashed, ran alsoft diskwarrior, crashed, ran memtest, hung, etc. I heard airport cards could be a problem so I disconnected, then removed, the card, to no avail. it got worse, to the point where I couldn't even startup from a DVD. It would mount in Target Disk Mode but I couldn't copy files from the drive.
So I got a SATA external case, with a simple slide and plug USB setup, and pulled the drive to try and save the memory. drive came out fine, plugged in fine, powered up when I plugged it into my MBP, and mounted. then five seconds later, it unmounted, with a Device Removed Incorrectly or whatever error. Then seconds later, it mounted again, and then did the same unmount trick. just continuously.
I have no idea where to go from here. I'm about ready to just toss the whole thing.

Clearly you have a bad hard drive. Time to replace it.

  • Mac Mini Kernel Panic on startup

    Hi everyone.
I am having a particularly annoying problem with a Mac Mini 4,1 (2010).
My problem is, in fact, almost identical to a similar discussion from last December:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2698431?threadID=2698431
I have followed an identical protocol. I couldn't boot the Mac Mini using either an OSX install DVD or USB stick, but I was able to mount the Mac Mini's internal hard drive as a firewire drive on my laptop.
Using this method I was able to zero out the hard drive and install OSX 10.6. My MBP would then boot just fine from the Mini's HDD using firewire. But when trying to start the Mini itself I encounter a kernel panic every time. Similarly I encounter a KP when I try and boot from an install DVD or USB, or try and boot into safe mode, verbose mode, single user mode and the hardware diagnostic mode.
I have tried with different RAM, I have reset the PRAM and I have resent the SMC.
Verbose mode crashes on a line referencing the AppleHDADriver, which I presume is an audio driver.
The only option I can see remaining is to take out various components, such as the airport card etc until I have something that starts up.
I would like to try and restore the firmware, but Apple apparently haven't released a firmware restoration CD for the Mac Mini 4,1...which is odd.
Anyway, any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks

Hi, I have a mac mini server (mid-2010 aluminium version). Recently I want to erase the HD and reinstall the osx server because I do like the way the system was set up. However, I cannot boot up the mac mini using the original install DVD. The computer just display the apple logo, followed by the spinning wheel with grey screen and nothing happens. I cannot get into the os installaion. I have tried the DVD using external FireWire and USB DVD writer, and also tried putting the DVD into my MacBook and do remote install osx but still have the same problem.
I suspect that the DVD that come with the computer may not be the correct build version for the aluminium mac mini because it has newer hardware components. I wonder how many people will have problem using the original install DVD ?

This is Rodney Watson. tch id(sc28f02f0b). Please contact me at********** I have no access to tsps. I have no contact information that successfully gets me feedback and I very much would love to get this machine back to its owner within two weeks if possible. I have a file of crash reports and other potentially useful data regarding this repair.
The initial issue with the system was that after a short time on a browser, the system would kernel panic, then the system would restart. I tried the quick fixes, resets, (updates are current for the user's volume) I tried a startup volume with a known good operating system, (OS X 10.8.3). I used known good ram, power supply, logic board,  hard drive w fresh install of OS X 10.8.3. I still get the same behavior from thi sunit. It either boots to the desktop and crashes and restarts only to kernel panic and restart again, or it never gets to the desktop and repeatedly crashes/ restarts.

Hmmm, which exact Mini is it, a 2010 Mini should take 16 GB of RAM... but not just any  RAM...

Does this mean i have to get my Logic Board changed due to malfunction, or is there some other problem? Please assist...
    Thanks in advance

No. In fact I wouldn't even worry about it unless this becomes a continuous problem. No software on Earth is perfect. There are, however, some tips you might want to consider:
Some of the backtrace appears that you're running VMWare, and quite honestly I don't know what types of bugs might be present in it.
If you're using a third party drive with third party add-ons and drivers, they can sometimes be problematic.
I know Seagate had software that was problematic with Mountain Lion and they're supposedly putting out updates to fix the problems (might already be done for all I know).
A single crash isn't a big deal. If it's crashing periodically, the it's a problem.

  • Mac Mini Kernel Panic?

Well. Its the Mac OS X Tiger.
Apple sent me the DVD to reinstall it a few weeks ago to get the Kernel Panic off and I'm not sure of how to go through getting this off? I've looked it up on many forums on different sites and it hasn't really helped me. So, how do I go about doing this?

  • Leopard Disk made my Mac Pro Kernel Panic

I have used original OSX 10.5 Leopard Disk to repair my mac pro HD, but it made my Mac Pro Kernel Panic. It was strange that the Mac Pro install disk one can success enter install mode!
Although I have conducted RESET PRAM procedure, the Leopard disk still made the mac Kernel Panic.

I would like to ask if you upgraded your graphics card and if so, that it might require a later OS version than the DVD.
Two, I never use the DVD to repair permissions (Apple warns users to not use the DVD to do so now with Leopard); or to repair disk drives.
You are better off setting up a bootable hard drive for emergencies; a bootable clone of your working system; and, TimeMachine, so you have more than just one backup set or method.
Kernel panics are caused by hardware otherwise, most often due to 3rd party devices and even cables, including Firewire or USB.

My mac mini won't back up to my Seagate external drive but can read the information on it.
Can i back up to it at all? and how do i do it?
    Simon

I suspect the Seagate is not formatted to be used with the Mac. The correct format would be Mac OS Extended (Journaled), if you just bought the EHD then almost certainly it's formatted to be used with MS Windows machines. This is easy to fix, here are instructions on how to format it:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
After formatting Time Machine http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427 will launch and will begin backing up. The first backup will take some time however after the first backup it will go pretty quickly.
NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After formatting all data will be erased, so please if you have data on that move it to the internal HD first and then format. Then once you have backed up you will have a backup copy of the data. Also NEVER EVER use a backup disk to be used to store data. The reason being is if that drive crashes you have not only lost the data you have lost it's backup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Random Kernel Panics...Random Cause?

I continue to have kernel panics with my MBP. They seem to occur pretty consistently after my MBP comes back from sleep or on startup. Startup seems to take about 15 mins. or so of me starting and shutting my MBP. On some of these startup tries, the screen never comes on at all. On others, the startup tone plays, but then repeats, over and over. After many tries, it seems like everything boots up normally. As soon as I try to open a program, a kernel panic occurs. Eventually, everything runs normally. Until I leave for an hour or the MBP otherwise goes into sleep mode. When I bring it back up, a kernel panic occurs.
I have run the Apple Hardware Test a few times in loop mode. One time after 17 tries it found an error. Another time it took 86 tries to get the error. The error it returns is always the same:
    4MOT/2/40000005: Right Side
I can see how that error would be a fan thing. But would a fan not working cause the startup issues/waking from sleep issues? I'm baffled. And REALLY ******.
Any ideas? Anyone? I fear taking the computer to Apple, fearing they'll tell me there's nothing wrong with it. I fear the third party Mac tech who i DO trust will keep it for weeks and then slap me with a huge bill, even though I have Apple Care...

this is the most recent panic log. the "panic attacks" started months ago and seemed more random. now it's EVERY time i try to boot up or come back from sleep...

    Hi there nutzeros,
You may find the troubleshooting steps toward the bottom of the article below helpful. Please keep in mind, diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you would like to avoid this process, or do not know how to perform any of the following steps, consider bringing the Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance. Be sure to ask that, if the drive needs reformatting or replacing, they contact you about escalating your case to a special data recovery service. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).

  • Early 2009 Mac Pro - Kernel Panic help please

I'd really appreciate some help troubleshooting KPs, please.
My machine is a Mac Pro early 2009, 16GB Ram, 2x30" Apple Cinema Displays, secondary display connected via mini display port adaptor.
I'm getting a KP every couple of days and the frequency seems to be increasing.
I think the Panic logs point to internet access as being the source of the problem. In the log that I've posted, an app called Radium is mentioned in the "
BSD process name corresponding to current thread" - Radium is an internet radio app and I was getting KPs before I installed it.
Previous panic logs have mentioned Chrome in place of Radium.
In the "unloaded kexts" com.apple.driver.AppleIntel8254XEthernet makes me this this is possibly internet related.
I have tried using ethernet port B instead of A in case port A was faulty, but the panics still happen. Maybe I could try connecting over wifi next.
I've booted into single user mode (64 bit kernel by holding the 6 and 4 keys during boot) and ran memtest overnight for 5 loops - all Ram checks out fine.
I've zapped PRAM and checked and reseated all RAM, HDs and GPU. Carefully cleaned all internal components of dust.
Any help would be very gratefully received, thanks in advance for any ideas.

The panic reports should  be here:
    /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (Mac OS X v10.6)
    according to:
Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic
There is nothing obviously wrong with the stuff you posted so far, and the two seem to have happened in about the smae place. That increase the risk you have some damage to Mac OS X, and may benefit from a re-Install.

  • Back to my Mac causing kernel panic 100%.

Every time I try to connect to my iMac (27", 2011 model, running latest Lion) from my MacBook Pro (13" 2009 model, running latest Lion), using Back to my Mac causes the iMac to kernel panic and reboot.  This started relatively recently, perhaps with the upgrade to Lion.  This happens every time.
Accessing the iMac from my Mac mini still running Leopard is A-OK.  Anybody have similar situation? Thanks.

Go to the .Mac website and check out the BTMM pages. You'll find a list of routers that are compatible. Not all are, and some that are require firmware updates. Make sure your router(s) are compatible.
In my case the routers I deal with at home and work are compatible and I've found BTMM 100% reliable.

  • Nearly daily Mac Mini restarts - Panic log attached

    Hi Guys and Gals,
I get almost daily (un-intended) reboots of my Mac Mini.  Also, often when I use Screen Sharing to remotely control it, it will reboot.
Any help or insight you can give would be appreciated!
    Panic log follows.

I'd love to say SoundFlower was the culprit... but I just had another reboot.
    Any more ideas?

  • Mini kernel panic after repairing disk permissions

Repaired disk permissions per others' advice on here and other forums because my mini was running unacceptably slow. This didn't cure the problem so I used the tech tools disk that came with apple care- now, I get a kernel panic upon startup. I'm asked to restart the computer, I do it- and then I'm asked again!
I called apple and they were defensive and rude. Frankly they didn't seem to care about whether or not I'd have to wipe my hard drive. Needless to say this is not something I want to do.
It seems important to mention that I had an external hard drive connected to my computer- would this matter?
Would repairing disk permissions CAUSE problems with my computer?
When the disk repair program ran it said that there was a volume error- it fixed this error and then told me that the volume was error free.
What can I do? I'm so frustrated! I love my computer and I really don't want to wipe the hard drive!

We have all been there and we have all done the same thing, so you are part of the club.
Apple uses a three number versioning system so you are almost there, but not quite.
MacOS officially does not exist anymore. However, it wouldn't go over well with the then user base to call their next operating system for their computers NeXTstep as they felt the entire identy of a Mac was its OS or more specifically its look and feel.
So they called it Mac OS 10 instead, opting for the roman numeral X.
Mac OS X is pronounced Mac OS Ten, or simply OS Ten
Now that 10 is out of the way.
The second numeric position represents significant
    pause
um yeah, some might argue with Tiger not as much so but significant changes to the OS.
    10.4
There.. Each significant change was associate with a moniker representing a cat. 10.4 is associated with the Tiger, 10.3 with the Panther, 10.2 with the Jaguar, etc.
So Tiger is Mac OS 10.4 or simply OS Ten dot Four
Within each release is a bugfix release which also may contain usability enhancements and security patches.
10.4.0 - the initial product release, also called a `Dot-Oh` release
10.4.1 - the first round of bugfixes
10.4.2 - the second round of bugfixes
This continues on sequentially until theoretically the bugs are all fixed in the product but in reality means until the next significant release comes out; Leopard, OS 10.5.
You should always be prepared for the possibility that a bugfix release may contain a security patch that significantly modifies and aspect of the file system that may break a disk utility application. In other words you always have to be vigilant with regards to that class of application.

  • Mac Mini Kernal Panics and AHT error - long description

I have a late 2009 Mini that has had kernal panic issues for some time. When I first bought the computer it had 1/120 and I upgraded it to 2/320 myself. It is hooked up to my HDTV as a media server and it started getting kernel panics running Netflix in Safari. Sometimes the fan would spin up to very high levels while running Virtual Box with Windows XP.
It seemed to be the added RAM and I pulled it. Panics went away but now it is very slow. I purchased 2 - 2GB RAM from OWC and installed in machine. It was good for a while but then started kernel panics again.
Recently my MS bluetooth keyboard started having issues connecting and the panics got worse. I ran AHT on the machine and got the following error code:
4MOT/2/40000004: Master - 0 I reran the test and got 4MOT/2/40000004: Master - some 4 digit number I didn't write down because someone unplugged the machine while I was getting a pen.
It appears to be heat related because after a kernel panic if I leave the machine turned off for half an hour or so it works again for a while but if I just restart it will panic again within the next 15 minutes.

Thank you for the answer. I suspected a fan issue considering the symptoms. I know others have had fan issues with other MOT codes but wasn't sure.
It is odd that it says MOT instead of, oh, say, FAN.
I think my first step will be to run the fan utility and see what the fan and temps are doing before I go to a Genius bar.
Go ahead and make the appointment; if the AHT says it's bad, it needs attention.
