Mac mini leopard install

I have a mini that used to have tiger on it, i tried upgrading to leopard but the disk was no good and wiped everything off. now i have a legit copy of leopard and when i put in the disk and hold down c all i get is the gray apple screen how long should i wait for somethign to come up. I am running with a non apple USB keyboard and mouse if that makes any difference

You said the disk is a “legit” copy, the black label as Dave mentioned, and it needs to be a wired keyboard, as a brody mentioned, otherwise, the system starts up before the keyboard drivers are loaded. It may also be that the non-Apple keyboard is not recognizing the c key.
You can change the startup disk to the installer disk in System Preferences to see if that helps.

  • Mac mini server install DVD - install on a different computer

I bought a Mac mini server (= a Mac mini with a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server pre-installed) a while ago. I am planning to install Lion Server on the same Mac Mini and get rid of the Snow Leopard installation DVD. My question is, can the DVD that came with the Mac mini be used to install the server OS on a different computer (another Mac mini or iMac etc.)? or is it somehow tied to the original Mac mini?
    Thanks!

Install discs included with a Mac are only able to install on the same model Mac. However historically Mac OS X Server install discs are not limited in the same way. (Remember there is no such thing as a Lion install disc.)
The server install disc is more typically limited in being an older version of Mac OS X e.g. 10.6.3 and thus not able to boot and install on the latest model Macs. It is however possible to boot and install on an older Mac e.g. an older Mac mini but install on to an external hard disk which might even be the internal hard disk of another Mac connected via FireWire Target Disk Mode. You can then run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server Combo update to update it to the latest Snow Leopard Server version which will then boot successfully on all the current Macs including those that have only ever shipped with Lion.
Since a DVD disk takes very little space I would suggest you don't throw it away.

  • How to run: Mac Mini + Leopard + 1080p ?

Can someone tell me on how to run Mac Mini + Leopard + 1080p? I tried running SwitchRex X 3.7.10 and I was not able to make it work. I read DisplayConfigX may work. Thanks.

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much free RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Mac Mini - Leopard kernel panic

    Hi
I have been having a recurring kernel panic on my Intel Mac mini since upgrading to Leopard. I run my Mac mini as a home server, so after logging in I tend to leave it alone downloading a few things.
However, when I return to it after a few hours it has suffered a kernel panic and asks me to hold down the power button.
Here is the backtrace I get. I would very grateful if someone experienced could give me any idea of what is causing the panic (is it something to do with the airport?). I've submitted the crash report to Apple several times.

I'm curious how you installed Leopard - was it an upgrade install (the default option), an archive and install or an erase and install?
If either of the first two, did the mini show any signs of instability at all before the update to Leopard?
Also, what software is installed on the device, and peripherals connected to it, and while you describe it as being used as a 'home server' exactly what is it that it does?
You could be suffering kernel panics as a result of several things, not least that there is something still on the system from the prior OS that Leopard isn't compatible with and which would have justified an erase and install and a full reinstall of software; that there is software in use which is not fully Leopard compatible; that there is an external device which is causing the problem; that there is an internal hardware problem - typically RAM.

  • Mac mini Leopard  connects to Apple extreme BUT XP WONT CONNECT HELP PLEASE

*I have a new mac mini intel 1.83 ghz Core 2 Duo I used bootcamp to partition Windows XP pro SP2*
*I was initially easily able to connect to my wireless Apple extreme in either Leopord 10.5.4 or Windows XP.*
*I then installed all the new (100) security updates for SP2 and now Windows XP sees my airport extreme but for some reason can't connect. I set up the Wizard using a manual network key and using the same password for my network connection. When I startup in Leopard 10.5.4 no problems always connected to Airport extreme. But no connection on Windows XP to wirelessx Apple extreme.*
*I wonder if anyone has a solution, maybe a detailed explanation how to set up with the Windows XP network wizard?*
*Does the Apple AirPort Utility Setup 5.3.2 for windows help in any way?*
    *Thanks in advance!*

I have no idea what happened. I plugged in my USB flash drive in an attempt
to run the Apple Airport utility for windows to see if that would get me connected, but just as I plugged in the USB drive my wireless connection flashed and said CONNECTED and I've been good for the past 12 hours. I never had to use the Apple Airport utility.
I just wish I knew what happened in case I lose this connection and have to try & reconnect....I guess I could always try inserting a usb drive!

  • Can't connect to mac mini leopard shares or screen share

i'm having problem connecting to a mac mini that is on my network (running leopard 10.5.8) and is wired to the network via an AEBS.
previously when my MBP was also running 10.5.8 i had no problems using screen sharing and connecting to 2 shares on it using "afp://10.x.x.x/sharename", or browsing to them via finder.
i did a clean install of SL on the MBP and now even though the mac mini shows up in finder, when i select it it just sits there trying to connect and eventually the beach ball appears and fails saying it can't connect to it.
when i try to connect to the shares using command-K, again it won't connect to the shares.
if i try to connect to them using the samba share that is also configured on the mac min then is does connect to them.
i can ping the mac mini using network utility.
any ideas what the problem is? everything worked fine before i wiped and installed SL.

    HI,
Make sure screen sharing is turned on and you have set up sharing permissions on the computer whose screen you want to share.
    To set up screen sharing:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
All users: Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
Only these users: Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.
Click Add + at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Accounts preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list and click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen: Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password: Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen.
It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • Kernel Panics at Mac Mini Leopard

    Hi guys,
I have been experiencing regular kernel panics for the past two weeks and after calling twice Apple i decided to go on with a posting. Here is a briefing of what happened...
I bought the mini with Tiger just before Leopard was released. It had 1gb of RAM but on the spot I asked them to upgrade it with 1 more so in total I have 2 gb now. When Leopard was released -a month later or so -I bought it from apple and did and upgrade. The mac mini was working fine for almost a year but recently it started to crash with the screen going grey and a message saying "you need to restart your computer by holding down the switch on button" in several languages. This is a kernel panic as far as I know.
I decided to go for an archive and install of Leopard but the problem persisted. I then did a clean install (Leopard) but after a few days -and after installing all the programmes I had before- the same again with kernel panics. I run the hardware test -the short one/2mins and the longer one- and everything appeared to be fine. I cleaned the cache and cookies with Onyx and still nothing. I run a software called preferential treatment and checked for system preferences problems. It found some and i deleted them. Of course I run disk utility and repaired permissions several times but again nothing. A guy from Apple told me to re-install Tiger and then upgrade to Leopard but I haven t done that.
Initially I was suspecting Time machine having a corrupted file that would cause the Kernel Panic but the again I should have the problems when I am entering time machine which is not the case.
It looks like that the Mac mini crashes when 5-7 applications are running. I used to work with many applications open but I never had this problem. Can it be a hardware problem?
The kernel panic report is as follows. Any help would be appreciated.

  • External drives no longer mounting on other Mac since Leopard Install

I have recently upgraded my old iMac to a Mac Mini with Leopard, however since using my Iomega 320GB External Hard Disk and also my 2GB Kingston USB Stick on my Mini they no longer mount on my old iMac, it's like Leopard has somehow created a volume on them ensuring they won't mount elsewhere anymore.
I still have lots of files on my old iMac that I need to transfer over to my Mini so this is a problem to me.
    Any ideas?

  • My internet connection (not WiFi) is slow on my 10.8.4 Mac Mini after installing/removing Norton.

I believe I've experienced this problem before, but cannot remember the exact solution. The previous solution was deleting a file in the Mac OS (possibly even the finder? but that sounds worrisome), then restarting.
I am using a Mac Mini 2.5 GHz i5, with 16GB of recently installed (within the last 3 months) 3rd-party RAM, loaded with Mac OS 10.8.4.
Recently, I received a DMCA letter from Comcast (my second), which just seemed impossible to me, so I decided to actually take their advice and install Norton. Why? Because I'm a moron. After all, my network is locked down with WPA2, I have an encrypted Time Machine drive connected to my 3rd Gen Airport Extreme, and encrypt my Mini when logged out (which happens after 15 minutes of inactivity). In brief, there's no way Comcast's letter was correct. But to be sure, I installed Norton.
Almost immediately, crappy internet connectivity ensued. My Wifi signal was always strong, but my computer struggled to connect to the outside internet. So, after a week of wondering, I finally uninstalled Norton (using their uninstall application found online).
Still, my Internet connection was (and is) crap. Here are the steps I've already taken to resolve the issue:
    1. I called Comcast and asked them to check on their end. They conducted a reset from their end, which seemed to improve my connection, but only temporarily. It has since resumed a slow connection that sometimes drops out.
    2. I tried my network with other devices: 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, and one Macbook Air all have excellent internet connectivity. As I write this, my Mini struggles to load Comcast's speed test site, but my iPhone is pulling down near 30 Mbps.
    3. I have connected my Mini to another, neighboring Wifi, and it works like a charm. Fast Internet, no cutting out.
    4. I loaded Time Machine, and restored my system to its pre-Norton state. Still, the Internet connectivity is poor.
    5. I have created a new network on my Airport Extreme. While my iPhone still pulls down a great connection, my Mini chokes on it.
The only things I can think to do from here is to Factory Reset my Airport (which I don't see as a plausible solution, since all my other devices connect through it just fine), wipe my Mini and start over (not a realistic solution for my business), or throw it out the window entirely, then stomp up and down on it (this won't fix my Internet issue, but I might feel better).
Thoughts? I KNOW it's an easy fix, but I just can't remember what it was. The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago with another Macbook, and it was a simple file deletion and restart.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Alright, I think I might've actually solved my own problem. Here's what I did (for anyone out there with the same/similar issue):
Open System Preferences and click on the Network pane.
Select Airport in the list to the left and click the minus button below to temporarily delete it.
    Restart your Mac.
Go to the Network section of System Preferences again, this time pressing the plus button towards the bottom of the window.
Select Airport from the Interface menu, leave “Airport” as the default name, and click Create.
Select your WiFi network, and enter your password.
My speed is back up to speed, so fingers crossed that this works!

  • New mac mini server: Install OS on older Mac Mini?

I have an UBUNTU server running on the network and was thinking of replacing it with the new Mac Mini Server edition. I also have an older (2009 - intel) Mac Mini.
I was wondering if I could install the OS X Server OS that comes with the NEW mini on the OLDER Mac Mini and reformat the newer server as a "normal" workstation.
I can deal with the optical drive issue. I'm just wondering if the OS X Server software is tied to the newer hardware in any way.
I'd be saving about $300 this way - not a big deal but still worth it. The "traditional" way would be to buy an new Mac mini as a workstation and a copy of Mac OS X Server for the older Mac Mini

I was wondering if I could install the OS X Server OS that comes with the NEW mini on the OLDER Mac Mini and reformat the newer server as a "normal" workstation.
No. That OS can only be installed on the Mac model it shipped with.

  • Mac Mini - Cannot install Mac OS X on this computer

I have recieved a Mac Mini from a family member as a gift - I believe it's an old 2010 model or so running 2.66 GHz, 4 GB RAM and 1TB (2 500gb) HDD.
I'm 99% sure the disc I'm using is the computers orginal disc.
I have gone about reformatting the computer like I have done with all my macs previously, however when I select a language when booting from disk, I will get the pop up error "Cannot install Mac OS X on this computer". I have tried wiping both hard drives, partitioning both hard drives but to no avail.
    Help is much appreciated.

Having a go installing the Mini Server disc just incase - seems to be working?

  • Base model Mac Mini Leopard Performance

    Hi im new around here.
I have had a Macbook for about a year now. The only upgrade I got when i brought it was 1gb of ram (was 512mb standard at the time).
I also have a 6 month old pc that im bored with, and as macs can now run windows i have no need to have the pc so will be selling it on.
Im thinking of getting a Low end Mac Mini with the 1gb of ram and 1.83ghz processor. How well will this run leopard in comparison to my Macbook running Tiger?
Im hopeing that it will run in a similar way or better but not keeping my hopes up :\
    Cheers for any help

I think it will be very similar in performance to running Tiger on your 1 Gig Macbook.
And in some ways, more responsive, since the Finder is less likely to beachball when waiting for network resources.
And if you track down legacy apps that cause Rosetta to run -- and replace or eliminate these apps -- then performance will be even better.
Utilities > Activity Monitor is a good tool to find those old legacy PPC apps.

  • Mac Mini Yosemite Install - Reboot Back to Mavericks

I finally decided to upgrade my Mac Mini HTPC to Yosemite. I run the installer, says it's going to install, reboots, does the spinner for a bit, reboots again and I'm back at the login screen in Mavericks. If I login, it's like I never tried to install. No errors, no messages, just ... back in Mavericks.
I downloaded the installer a second time to see if the one I had was corrupted, same result. I scanned the console quickly and while there are messages there, nothing seems like a smoking gun to me.
    Suggestions?

Tried repairing permissions. Downloading installer yet again to see if it's changed with 10.10.3 and fixed something. Posted the same question on apple.stackexchange.com.

  • Screen is dim on my Mac Mini after installing 10.6.3 update

Has anyone else encountered this problem? My Mac Mini was running just fine until I installed 10.6.3. After the reboot the display came up very dim. The icons and overall display are noticeably darker and playing a flash video (Hulu) results in an image that can barely be seen because it is nearly black. This is both with a direct DVI connection as well as through a DVI to VGA adapter. The same symptom is displayed on my ViewSonic monitor as well as my Sony HD TV (through the VGA port).
    Mac OS X 10.6.3
2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Intel GMA 950 built-in video card (64 MB of memory)
    1024 x 768 @ 60Hz, 32 bit color
There isn't much to change in System Preferences -> Display and I tried adjusting the contrast (System Preferences -> Universal Access -> Enhance Contrast) but nothing seems to help.
Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
