Mac Mini - Leopard kernel panic

Hi
I have been having a recurring kernel panic on my Intel Mac mini since upgrading to Leopard. I run my Mac mini as a home server, so after logging in I tend to leave it alone downloading a few things.
However, when I return to it after a few hours it has suffered a kernel panic and asks me to hold down the power button.
Here is the backtrace I get. I would very grateful if someone experienced could give me any idea of what is causing the panic (is it something to do with the airport?). I've submitted the crash report to Apple several times.

Thank you!

I'm curious how you installed Leopard - was it an upgrade install (the default option), an archive and install or an erase and install?
If either of the first two, did the mini show any signs of instability at all before the update to Leopard?
Also, what software is installed on the device, and peripherals connected to it, and while you describe it as being used as a 'home server' exactly what is it that it does?
You could be suffering kernel panics as a result of several things, not least that there is something still on the system from the prior OS that Leopard isn't compatible with and which would have justified an erase and install and a full reinstall of software; that there is software in use which is not fully Leopard compatible; that there is an external device which is causing the problem; that there is an internal hardware problem - typically RAM.

  • Every time I watch any online video mac mini has kernel panic

Everytime I have attempted to watch any online video, (World Cup, online seminars, Photoshop tutorials, even a couple of times on youtube) this mac mini just shuts down and forces a restart.
If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ron

  • Mac mini 2012 kernel panic problems

i have searched the boards, completed hardware tests, taken the machine, to the apple store 3 times (once left for overnight testing), stopped using the logitech mouse, disconnected my WD external drive, and completed no less than a dozen clean 10.10 reinstalls but still the mac has kernel panics.
in the past it would crash to the multilingual start up now it crashes to a file folder icon with a question mark and must be turned off.
how can i fix this problem? or how can i get apple to exchange the machine? my 2007 mac mini and 2008 iMac run like a champ, even the LC II from 1993 is more stable.
thank you for any thoughts or help! Joe
here is the latest crash report...

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Mac Mini (CoreSolo) kernel panics every night like clockwork

My new CoreSolo mini seems to kernel panic every night. Each morning, i find it displaying the 'reboot your computer' screen. The system.log is not particularly illuminating:
    Apr 10 23:32:36 the-computer mdimportserver[780]: NSDataMessageStore: couldn't find body
    Apr 10 23:32:36 the-computer mdimportserver[780]: NSDataMessageStore: couldn't find body

    Apr 11 11:35:20 localhost kernel[0]: PAE enabled
Apr 11 11:35:20 localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us
Basically, the last thing on the log last night was me putting it to sleep at 1:38AM, and then me at 11:35AM the next morning rebooting it because it was frozen.
This has happened almost every day this week. I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut off before rebooting.
I've run memtest in single user mode on the RAM (2GB), and it has passed over 7 runs without a hitch.
Any ideas? I'm already thinking of getting Apple to exchange this unit due to excessive fan noise, so maybe this is related. Overheating?

The one thing about lion preinstalled is, You can run disk utilities from the restore partition by holding down the R key at startup or run aht by holding down the D key at startup. And it's still under warranty for a year after purchase. If all else fails you can do a restore. If the apple store gets it, that's most likely what they will do. So you'd have to backup anything you want to keep.

  • Mac Mini 2005 / Kernel Panic

My mac mini kept getting the kernel panic every time it booted up. Took it into the apple store and they said most likely the HD was going out. Of course when it was in the store it had no kernel panic problems. I ended up replacing the HD in the mini and after loading system software, etc. I get the kernel panic again! Can it be the RAM went bad? Any suggestions?

Take a look at this article and follow the suggestions: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • Mac Mini 2011/Kernel Panics

Since I got my 2011 Mac Mini last August, it has been crashing/kernel panicking mercilessly (I'm lucky that it is only my secondary machine).  The AHT shows everything is good.  After months of trouble-shooting, wiping/re-installing, and uncontrollably cussing, I finally traced the problem down to…
    1) a bad, really old iPod USB cable, and…
    2) Microsoft Silverlight
Is anyone else having any kind of problem like this with his/her Minis?
Also, Logic Express 9 failed to be installed and failed to work with this machine after I re-copy it from a disk image (works fine with my main iMac and my old 2007 MacBook!).  But, that's not a big concern since I'm moving to the App Store Logic Pro anyway.
And by the way, Safari and iPhone crashes often on this thing, too.  They are very stable on my the other two machines.
It is rather disappointing: I've been a Mac User for more than 20 years and this is, by way far, the worst Mac related experience I've had.  I really hope mine is a very isolated case.
    Thank you.

  • Kernel Panics at Mac Mini Leopard

    Hi guys,
I have been experiencing regular kernel panics for the past two weeks and after calling twice Apple i decided to go on with a posting. Here is a briefing of what happened...
I bought the mini with Tiger just before Leopard was released. It had 1gb of RAM but on the spot I asked them to upgrade it with 1 more so in total I have 2 gb now. When Leopard was released -a month later or so -I bought it from apple and did and upgrade. The mac mini was working fine for almost a year but recently it started to crash with the screen going grey and a message saying "you need to restart your computer by holding down the switch on button" in several languages. This is a kernel panic as far as I know.
I decided to go for an archive and install of Leopard but the problem persisted. I then did a clean install (Leopard) but after a few days -and after installing all the programmes I had before- the same again with kernel panics. I run the hardware test -the short one/2mins and the longer one- and everything appeared to be fine. I cleaned the cache and cookies with Onyx and still nothing. I run a software called preferential treatment and checked for system preferences problems. It found some and i deleted them. Of course I run disk utility and repaired permissions several times but again nothing. A guy from Apple told me to re-install Tiger and then upgrade to Leopard but I haven t done that.
Initially I was suspecting Time machine having a corrupted file that would cause the Kernel Panic but the again I should have the problems when I am entering time machine which is not the case.
It looks like that the Mac mini crashes when 5-7 applications are running. I used to work with many applications open but I never had this problem. Can it be a hardware problem?
The kernel panic report is as follows. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to run: Mac Mini + Leopard + 1080p ?

Can someone tell me on how to run Mac Mini + Leopard + 1080p? I tried running SwitchRex X 3.7.10 and I was not able to make it work. I read DisplayConfigX may work. Thanks.

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much free RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Mac Pro gets kernel panic while trying to boot from Leopard install disk

    Hi all,
I'm finally getting around to installing leopard on my 2006 Mac Pro. It has the x1900 video card from Apple and all firmware is up to date. The install disk upgraded my Macbook with no problems.
When booting I get the wipe to grey, kernel panic, "You must restart your Mac" screen. Any suggestions?
BTW the Leopard install disk installs OSX 10.5.0
    Thanks
    Pax

I finally found that the mac pro needs installer 10.5.2 or it will do the kernel panic thing. I did find a way around this though.
    1) I took an external drive hooked to my macbook and installed 10.5 on it. Then booted from it and did all the updates, installed all my necessary software (ilife 08, parallels, and so on).
    2) I then made sure my Mac pro's drive was currently backed up and then booted up from the backup and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the new OS 10.5.4 Leopard disk onto my Mac Pro boot drive.
    3) After that I used migration assistant to transfer all my user settings and such.
It all worked great and I now have Leopard on my Mac Pro.
Just thought I'd let everyone know how I got around it.

  • Booting from firewire target mode on a mac pro with  kernel panic?

    hello
i am wondering if it is possible to use firewire target mode to boot a mac pro that has never got past a multi language kernel panic on boot?
basically i have tried all the other options and cant get it to open the superdrive to insert my installation disk, as to repair the drivers with my snow leopard disk.
i've tried holding my mouse key down, the paperclip option on the drive itself and the firmware keycombo, so my idea is that the only way to fix it is with target mode. can this be done - and if so - could someone direct me towards a tutorial that will help me do this.
please advise if this is possible or if there is another method i should use? apart from taking it to the applestore (extreme last ditch option) i am quite low on ideas here.
    many thanks!
    p.s heres the message i wrote for the original problem which caused all the kernel panics;
"i recently bought a mac pro and upon starting it for the first time opted to transfer the all the data i could over via firewire from my macbook pro.
i used the standard 't' command with the firewire symbol.
Somewhere towards the end of the transfer (I am not sure at what pont - I wasnt there for all of it) - , the monitor went blank and the whole thing was unresponsive. my macbook's firewire sign continued to move around the screen.
after leaving it for some time i decided to turn off the macbook and then the mac pro.
i restarted the macbook and got some pretty crazy stuff happening to my calender - but so far everything seems to be fine.
i am more concerned about the "you need to restart your computer" message; this is the dreaded 'kernel panic' right?. i have never actually done anything with this computer yet, and it was purchased new."

"i recently bought a mac pro and upon starting it for the first time opted to transfer the all the data i could over via firewire from my macbook pro.
Never opt to transfer until you have insured it works fine for a couple days, I would never use Setup or Migration Assistant until such time, and I would have a bootable backup clone.
Try pulling all the hard drives from inside your Mac Pro and boot from OS X DVD - latest OS build.

  • Mac Book Pro Kernel Panic

Hi all I am new to the discussion board as a poster (though I have used the board much during my time as a MBP owner). I have recently (past 2 weeks) started having fairly regular kernel panics. I have my MBP since August 2009 and have upgraded the ram to 8 gb and the hd to 750 gb once since I've owned it (both were done at the mac store at my college before I graduated).
I upgraded to mavericks from snow leopard sometime last year, I don't remember when exactly, and haven't had any real issues with anything working except for a few things here and there such as old apps that I have now uninstalled and just gotten rid of.
I came home from work last week, probably on Monday February 2, and saw my computer was running while closed. I opened it up saw the dreaded "your computer restarted because of a problem screen". After many attempts and trouble shooting over the phone with my friend and sister I got the computer to boot up in safe mode and then got it boot up normally. I found a discussion on here about google drive causing finder to refresh constantly as I was trying to back up my files due to fear and was having that exact issue. So I uninstalled google drive and log mein, which I uninstalled as a precautionary measure, and my computer seemed to come back to normal. I reset PRAM and actually did a recovery of 10.9.5 after another panic and it seemed to "help". The panics continued but as I took steps to try and isolate the issues they got less frequent. I have done numerous disk verifies and repairs, both after logging in by going through the recovery mode.
This morning as I was getting ready for work I opened my laptop and it was loading very slowly and then BAM it panicked and restarted. So I copied the log that it gave me and thought maybe I should seek some outside help from everyone here. Since my only option, given what little I know about truly troubleshooting my computer, is to contact apple and go from there with that.
I am including the log from my latest panic and I am thankful for any insight I could be given.

  • TV for Mac triggering Tiger kernel panics

I picked up a "TV For Mac" 800E USB HD video device yesterday, and since I started using it, I've had 4 kernel panics. The kernel panic seems to indicate the crash was in the USB subsystem. I get an IODMACommand error every time.
A lot of other people are seeing the same problem. The company, Elgato, is not much help in solving this issue.
The video recorder works great, except for the crashing.
Does anyone else see this? Any solutions besides just not using the device?
Does anyone know of a video recording device (I use it for cable TV and HD digital broadcast TV) that might work without the gray-screen-of-death problem?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

This problem was eventually fixed with an update from Elgato software.
However, they say it is actually bugs in the MacOS USB subsystem, but hopefully they won't show again.
Also, the device appears to work fine in Leopard as well now.

  • Leopard Kernel Panic - HELP!

Hi everyone-- I'm new to these forums, but I have a somewhat annoying problem with my new Leopard OS.
I've had two kernel panics so far, both unexpected and both unseen (I was in the shower and cooking when both happened). I only returned to my computer to see the gray screen and the box in the middle with the exclamation mark and instructions to restart the computer manually.
For anyone who can analyze this code and maybe give me a hint of the reason for the kernel panic, I'd greatly appreciate it. I never had any kernel panics whatsoever in Tiger.
One other tidbit is that I just recently upgraded to 2GB Crucial RAM from 1GB stock Apple RAM, so I don't know if that will make any difference.
    Here's the error code:

    Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, it does look like a memory problem. Try fitting your old 1GB memory back into the Macbook to see it makes any difference. I had a similar memory error with my desktop running Windows before I had to swap the RAM module.
    Else, call Apple Care.

  • Leopard kernel panics

Since buying my MacPro in September I have had constant problems with kernel panics (something apple tells me is extremely rare!). A bit of history... first time, Apple replaced hard drive...worked for a month then kernel panics when watching video (either dvd, online, projects for class...) then constant (every 20 minutes or so again). Returned to Apple... another new hard drive... a week later more kernal panics... new logic board... okay, that was mid january and it worked fine for about a week until i watched video again (full screen crashed it at first, then every video, then everything). Vista has worked seamlessly the entire time (installed via bootcamp)... Yesterday upon the advice of Apple, zeroed out the volume and reinstalled leopard... fine until tonight when I used itunes... now panicking again... before yesterday had run memtest (long), techtools, applejack, cocktail, hardware test... nothing wrong and the Apple store has never found anything memory related either... so it seems video usually starts it happening, then it just cascades... i'm a grad student and afraid to use leopard for anything now... I've thought of just installing vista on the bulk of the drive since it works better than leopard, but i'd really like to get this working....
