Mac mini lost password

is there any way to install a new password on a mac mini in order to update software?
i have forgotten the password !
if not, how do i format the hard drive and start fresh?
i have tried putting in the install disc number one and holding the "C" key but it boots on the hard drive not on the install disk.
thanks.

+i have tried putting in the install disc number one and holding the "C" key but it boots on the hard drive not on the install disk.+
This is usually the result of 1) not timing the press of the C key correctly; or 2) using an Apple Aluminum usb keyboard; or 3) using a wireless keyboard.
I'd suggest using or borrowing any plain usb keyboard for this task. On a PC keyboard ATL maps to Option, and WinKey maps to CMD.
It is also possible that the Mini has had a firmware password assigned to it to protect it from install changes. In that case the normal password change methods won't work.
Keep in mind, too, that the install disc has to be either a full retail disc, or the install disc that was intended for and shipped with your model of Mini.

i bought a mac mini and i lost the administrator password. i was wondering how to fix this or restore it completely.

Just note that many tinks are locked to the previous owner's Apple ID. You will not be able to update apps without singing into the account that purchased them.
It is recommended that you boot into recovery

  • Is there a way of installing 10.4.2 on a Mac mini without password?

I am trying to help a friend who purchased a Mac mini from a relative a few years ago.
The OS needs reinstalling (too many faults to mention). I have the original install disc 1 and 2, but every time i try installing, the administrator password is needed. Unfortunately the first owner did not keep a record of it (all alternatives given have failed).
Is there a way of installing the OS without the administrator's password?
As a final attempt, i am a bit worried to erase all volumes using disc utility, because this might turn the mini completely useless if the OS will not install afterwards.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Um, I can't specifically answer that because I don't have a FV master password set and I am reluctant to set one just to see if I can unset it. I would think that if you do have one set it would only be requested if you were doing something related to FV. If you could provide cases where you are being asked for a password it might help us track down the reason. I am mostly asked for a password when I am adding software to the computer or doing some other administrative task. In that case it is asking for my admin password. The FV one I think is only as a backdoor to a FV account in case somebody has forgotten their password.

  • Mac Mini - Lost IP Address

I'm trying to help my dad who just got a Mac mini. Today he was cruising the Net just fine until shortly after dinner when he tried to get online and had no luck. The old Mac (eMac) was working fine connected to a router.
The router is fine, the Comcast connection is fine. When we go into Network settings, it says that though the cable is connected to the computer, the Mac can't connect to the Net because it has no IP address. How is this even possible?
We've tried all the tricks I know, deleting the SystemConfiguration folder, creating a new location in Network prefs, etc. How can I get my dad back online?
    Thanks for your help!
    Mike
P.S. He called Apple Care but, alas, it was after hours. So much for the 24/7 economy.

    Let's double-check the AirPort setup...
To setup AirPort for Internet connectivity:
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create an AirPort configuration, the AirPort card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
    - Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
    - Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    - By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically
    Proxies tab
    - Configure Proxies: Manually
    - Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    - Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
    - Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
    - Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

  • Reformatted my Mac Mini lost iLife apps

I have a 2011 model Mac Mini running Os X Lion. After some recent issues, I opted to reformat my computer thinking the iLife apps that came with my computer would still be on there after the reboot. I was wrong to think that.
I would just buy them again (all I want is iMovie and Garageband) but neither of their current version will run on my system. I have no intention of upgrading to Yosemite because I've heard nothing but bad reviews. Is it possible for me to buy older versions of the softwares? I would gladly pay the same amount as I would have to for the new ones.
Let me know if you can help me out.
    Thanks,
    Tyler

If your Mac mini came with OS X Lion, try opening the Mac App Store, logging in with your Apple ID, going to Purchases and downloading iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand for free. However, you may be asked to upgrade to OS X Yosemite in order to install those apps, although the Mac App Store may allow you to download the latest version compatible with your Mac OS X version. You should not need to purchase them.
If you are not allowed to download a compatible version, you will have to upgrade to OS X Yosemite (it's not so bad; if you have any problem, just reinstall OS X). Now you know you have to make backups of your files, so do one.

  • Mac Mini lost 1366x768 Setting - Losing my mind!!!

I am about to lose my mind!! I have spent 4.5 hours today on this and made no progress. I have a Mac Mini that was working great on 1366x768 on my Vizio 50" Plasma. I just moved into a new house in the last week, went to set it all back up and it will not find 1366x768. I am currently on 1024x768 at 60hz. I have tried resetting my PRAM and the PMU. I have deleted the com.apple.windowserver.plist file hoping the option would return, but no joy.
This has worked perfectly for 7 months and all I've done is disconnect, move, reconnect, and power up. What's wrong.
Please help the insanity go away!!!!
    Trey

Sorry, I kinda did an SMC already, but didn't mentioned it...since it's just removing power effectively.
I have triple checked the TV settings. There's really nothing to adjust. The TV is Auto Adjusting.
I just trashed the com.apple.windowserverXXXXX.plist files, and the Users/user/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.preference.displays.xxxxxxxxxx. plist files. Restarted with no improvement.
Still reading in hopes of finding an easter egg.

  • Mac Mini Lost to Gray Screen

I recently purchased a 1.25 GHz mini and started the upgrade process. I immediately saw a few glitches I had intended to quickly fix. I installed onyx to check the drive and os with no errors, however I noticed when I went to connect to the internet and download the updates for 10.4 it would quit halfway through the install, so I downloaded the update to my macbook and transferred the file and the install failed. Then I noticed that other programs would fail without notice so I decided it was time to reinstall. I made the error of opting to erase the install since there was nothing loaded or saved I intended to keep. However, it failed the install. I can get it to begin the install but it encounters errors almost immediately and quits. Now, when I boot it up without an istall disc inserted, it goes to a gray screen with a changing small image in the center rotating between the different mac application icons. I am stuck with no OS and an inability to load a new one. I installed my OS 10.5.1 family pack dvd and tried to run the disk check utility and it gave me the error that it could not unmount the disc.
Any help you can offer is much appreciated. Thank you.

If you can't even get the OS to install from an OS X installation disk onto a newly formatted drive, that is definitely a problem. That source disk error sounds strange because it sounds like the installer is telling you the OS X DVD has problems. Does it look scratched or anything like that? Fingerprints maybe? Can you get another OS X DVD installer disk to try?

  • How do I reset my mac mini password

I have just returned from 4 weeks away and cannot log into my Mac Mini. The Op Sys OS X 10.8.4 Mid 2010
Might be complicated by that fact I am using a logitech windows keyboard, but then always have. I can access the Guest account and confirm that the keyboard keys do seem to operate correctly.
I have followed a number of routines I have found on this discussion group, ie rebooting using Command S and Command R but they dont work......just bring me to the opening login screen.
I have a time machine backup......but before I do a factory reset is there anything else I can do to reset the password.
Strangely I always save passwords in a dbase but the saved password is definitely not working and no 'reset passwprd' option is displayed after my 3 failed attempts.
Thanks richly for any help out of this mess. Oh one other thing....I have use of a friends macbook....could I use that macbook as the keyboard?

I forgot my mac mini login password, how can I reset it so I can get in to my mac mini?

    Reset password using Lion Recovery
If you bought a brand new Mac with Lion pre-installed, it includes a recovery partition with various system recovery tools. One of them allows you to reset your Mac’s password:
Restart your Mac while holding down the ⌘ and R keys at the same time until you see the Lion Recovery screen.
From the menu bar at the top, select Utilities > Terminal.
In the Terminal window type resetpassword and press Enter.
Use the Reset Password utility to select your startup volume, choose your user account, enter your new password, complete the password hint field, and click Save.
Quit Terminal and restart your Mac.
You can also reset your password by using your Apple ID. It ought to be the same one you just used to log in here.
Reset your login password using your Apple ID
Make sure that FileVault isn’t enabled on your computer.
Make sure that an Apple ID is associated with your user account, and that an administrator has given you permission to reset your own password using an Apple ID.For more information, see: Associate Apple IDs with your user account
Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
In the login window, click the question mark in the password field, and then click the arrow in the dialog that appears.
Enter an Apple ID and password, and then click Reset Password.

  • How do I restore a Mac Mini 1.83?

    Hey there,
I was just given two Mac Mini 2006 1.83ghz the other day (old, out of use office computers) and one powers on and works perfectly, the other tells me its has a boot error and to insert boot disc.
My issue with the first one is that because it used to be an office computer, it loads to the home screen from my office. It requires a username and password. Sadly, the person who had the admin information is no longer with the company. Is there a way for my to restore this mini and remove the previous admin? I believe this one has also been updated to lion.
The second one just loads to a boot error and says to load the boot disc. (which weren't given to me with the macs)
I will happily buy the boot discs if I know that installing it will remove either the admin lock or fix the boot issue. Or even replacing the hard drive itself.
Also, with the second one, I'm not sure if the USB ports work on it as I plugged my apple keyboard in and I couldn't seem to type anything or turn the caps lock light on which did work perfectly on the first.
These are at my free will to upgrade and play with as I please, so any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks in advance!
