Mac mini (MB463LL/A) giving static sound

Hi,
I have this mac mini - MB463LL/A - and it has worked perfectly well without any issues all this well. But of late it started giving a static sound (don't know how to explain it, but it sounds like a sound from radio transmission or FM). It's continuous and constant - doesn't matter what the volume is. I have tried removing my speakers and tried with my headphones but I have the same issue there - so it seems like an issue with the hardware. Any ideas on how can I figure out what could be wrong and what should I do to get it fixed. Appreciate your help.
Thanks, Kalyan

No external hard drive is connected, but I have a usb drive connected that's needed for my wireless keyboard to work on mac mini. No grounded outlets around, but it sits under by HDTV and the only change in the recent past around the set up has been my new Airport Extreme wireless router. Earlier I used to have Airport Express and bought this one recently - if that's of any help.
Thanks for your help

Hello, since nobdy else has replied...
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there.

  • My Mac mini 2012 started making whistling sounds during download after upgrading to Maverick.

    anyone have a similar problem?

Personally, I feel that it is the new OS. I downloaded memory clean (since I had lion), and no matter what I am now always running less that 1GB of RAM (8GB currently on board). Every time I switch between text (websites and documents), to video. I always find that when I switch between them, it takes at least 20 seconds for the video to play (and after I click it, I start to hear my fan blow like never before). Even tonight when I tried to play a video off an external hard drive, it took over 30 seconds to load...and when it did, it responded by the hard drive disconnecting (with the fan). And I think it was the worst update for the mac mini...at least.
But I do feel if your fan is blowing more than normal, it due to the update. But if it’s blowing. But sounding weird...there maybe a hardware issue with it.

  • Mac mini running Plex and no sound coming through the amp.

I've got a Mac mini OS X 10.6.8  and I downloaded the Plex program to play movies and tv shows. I can't get any sound through the amp while watching through Plex. The Mac mini and amp are connected via HDMI cable and I know it's been set up right because I can run iTunes through the amp with no problems.
Anyone have a solution to get sound through the amp?
    Cheers

For sound, try the audio output port and connecting to the RCA  audio input ports on your Pioneer receiver.  Use something like this:

  • Mac mini doesn't play stereo sound over HDMI

My Mac mini (2012) is connected to my home theatre via HDMI.  While playing a 5.1 channe movie will play through the speakers fine, a stereo source will only play through the Mac's speakers.  This is true with iTunes Store content - if I slect Audio 1 (Stereo) it plays through the Mac speakers, if I select Audio 2 (5.1) it plays through my home theatre).
    Any suggestions?

There are also some DVD sets with lots of supplement material on their discs, that you can only run with Interactual's DVD Player for the Mac.   Sadly, this software you need 10.6.8 or earlier to run:

See this tip on doing that if you have a Mac made on or after the release of 10.7:

  • Mac mini won't stop alert sounds

About a month ago my Mini started making the alert tone (from the mini) whenever I turned off the monitor speakers to go to bed.  It didn't do it before, and even when I turn off alert sounds in system preference SOUND, it starts doing it again.  Any ideas?

    Hi,
Does it do it if you disconnect the KB & Mouse?
How often does it do it?

  • Mac Mini Late-2012 5.1 Surround Sound Issue

Hey guys, I'm running into some issues setting up 5.1 Surround sound on my mac mini. Heres my setup:
    - Mac Mini -> HDMI -> Projector
    - Mac Mini -> Digital Output (Toslink) -> Surround sound (Logitech Z906)
No matter what settings i try i cannot get 5.1 surround sound working. I've downloaded test tracks from dolby and all. Logitech is set to 5.1 and all. I've attempted to change the setup in audio MIDI to 48khz + 2ch-24Bit Integer , with no success. The 5.1 option inside of configure output is greyed out. Is there something i'm doing wrong? I've tried the 5.1 test tracks from Dolby through VLC.
Please help me, i've been working at this for nearly 2 days now. I've checked other answers with no sucess.
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, there is no configuration option for the S/PDIF interface. The following are the supported output formats:
    2.0 (Stereo L/R)
5.1 (Dolby Digital - DVD bitstream or AC3 encoded containers only via QuickTime or VLC)
5.1 (DTS - DVD bitstream only)
To configure for proper 5.1 use, you need to set DVD Player to use Digital Out (Optical), not the Digital Out (HDMI). To configure VLC you need to set it to use Digital Out also, though you may have to fiddle with it to figure out which digital output is which as VLC's advanced configuration options aren't the most user friendly out there.
Once again, for the S/PDIF interface there are no configuration options available other than Stereo. 5.1 tracks will not play properly unless the apps used to play them back are capable of sending encoded digital audio. Dolby Digital and DTS are bitstream formats (encoded), and as such require that the app can work with those tracks.
Audio MIDI Setup does have the option to manually select Encoded Digital Audio in the format menu, but you should not do so as that disables regular stereo playback. The aforementioned apps will automatically switch between Encoded Digital Audio and Stereo, usually reverting to Stereo when playback is concluded.

  • Suggest me a usb sound card for mac mini

please suggest me a usb sound card for mac mini (i need 5.1 sound)

The Griffin Technology FireWave will give you the 3 'cables' ("FireWave outputs six channel audio through three 1/8” (3.5mm) stereo mini-jacks: Left/Right, Center/Subwoofer and Right Surround/Left Surround.") connection for surround sound (speakers) audio. Whether or not a particular headphone set is compatible, you might ask Griffin directly about that. If you're playing a DVD with VLC or the Apple DVD Player, you will get surround sound. But, you'd have to find an MP3 with multi-channel audio inside it to play surround sound out of iTunes.

  • Mac Mini Late 2012, Mavericks, HDMI No Sound

    Hi
    My hardware:
    1 x 2012 Mac Mini
    1 x Pioneer SC-LX56 Receiver
    1 x Panasonic PT-AE3000
I formated my (new) Mini and installed a clean version of Mavericks. I then installed Plex (media center) and everything seemed to work perfectly. This morning when I tried Plex again I was getting no sound via HDMI - I checked the sound settings in preferences and HDMI as a output is missing. After having read through the forum I have found quite a few problems with this setup - basically it seems to be a handshake problem (I used my Receiver to listen to music last night which means I changed the input to tuner which, in turn, means that the Mac Mini basically had no screen / sound attached). If I reboot the Mini all is well and I can watch movies again with sound - yay...
I have read that a similar problem occured in OS X 10.8.5 -> there was then a supplimental Update released and all was well again - I am planning on installing 10.8.5 this evening - can anybody chip in and let me know if this setup (OS X 10.8.5 with the Supplimental Update) will fix my problem?
As I am only using the Mini as a Media center I do not really mind leaving it @ 10.8.5
    Thanking you in advance

  • How do I use an HDMI switch to my TV as a display with the 2011 Mac Mini?

AppleTV, PS3, DirecTV all work with the switch but the Mac Mini gives no picture or sound.

What TV and what type of input does it support...?
For an HDMI compatible TV, you'll need a > Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support - Apple Store (U.S.) plugged into the Thunderbolt/Mini Display port and a good HDMI cable.
For other types of connections and connection methods, please specify the connection that your TV supports.

  • Mac mini mid 2011 toslink audio

i bought a cambridge audio stereo amplifier ... plus a dac (beresforn bushmaster) .... i got my mac mini wired hdmi to my plasma ... no problem with that, sound and vision to the tv ... got that
now i wanted to use the toslink mini output to my new dac and the dac connected to my stereo amplifier ... it doesnt work ... and i cant get it right
i put the cable toslink mini sided into my mac mini ... it does apear a red beam ... the cable works, i tried it with other hardware ... i conect the other side to the dac ... nothing ... but the dac works fine ... the toslink conection from my tv works fine ... i get no audio from the mac mini through toslink output
yes, watching tv or mac mini on my plasma including sound from the stereo amplifier works fine ... as long as the plasma is on ...but i want to use the mac mini as a sort of "cd player" without having to switch on the plasma ... i thought mac mini hooked to my stereo/dac via toslink would work just fine without having to switch on the tv ... remote app lets go ...
but i cant get it ... can someone give me prove that toslink is unable to send a adiosignal aslong as hdmi is the main vieo/audio output ... therefore i must take the hdmi cable out of my mac mini? is that it? ....THAT CANT BE IT!!!!!!!!!
please i need to know how to make this work ...thx

Is it possible that the cable is not plugged in completely?
I know on my desktop setup, when I plug in my powered
speakers it feels like it engaged, when in fact it needs to
    be pushed in further.
The reason I bring this up is that anything plugged into
the line out port overrides all other audio interfaces regardless
of what they are.   It is the way this port works on Minis as
well as iMacs.  It follows the old headphone port paradigm.

  • Putting files on Mac Mini

I just purchased the intel Mac mini that has the Tiger OS.
I also have an iMAC G5 at home with Jaguar.
I bought the Mac mini for entertainment purposes only.
My iMAC was getting too full of music and it was getting bogged down, so I am going to take my 30 gigs of music off of my iMAC and put it on the MAC mini. I am going to then hook my MAC mini up to my surround sound speakers and my LCD tv (useing *** the monitor) in the front room.
My question is .... can I transfer my iTunes files easily from the iMAC to the MAC mini if the 2 computers have diff OS?
    If so, how?
Will it transfer smoothly with all my playlists and music in order?
Will I need to purchase a special firewire to do so?
The Apple employee told me it's easy. He said something about holding down the "P" button while starting up the computers after they are connected.
    Please help.

There is no problem copying it to the other computer. And, it doesn't matter that they have different microprocessors.
The guy at the store likely said the "T" key.
That would put the computer in Target Disk Mode.
With both computers off, connect the two computers using a FireWire cable.
Turn on the iMac and hold down the letter "T" immediately after turning on the computer. Keep holding it down until you see the computer display a "FireWire" logo. That vaguely looks like a large Capital "Y" with a circle in the middle of it.
Then, turn on the Mac Mini.
When the Mac Mini is done booting up, you'll see a hard drive icon on your desktop that represents your iMac's hard drive.
Now, browse to the iMac's hard drive and navigate to:
Hard Drive --> Users --> "Your User Name" --> Music
Now, get the Folder called "iTunes" and copy it to the exact same location on your new Mac Mini.
It will ask to over-write the existing folder. Just say yes.
Now, when you open iTunes on the new Mac Mini, it should see the music library.
Alternatively, if you don't want to use the above route, you can do everything except copy the folder from one computer to the other. And, instead:
Open iTunes on the new Mac Mini, and then go to the "File" menu and select "Add to Library".
Then, navigate to the location I mentioned previously on the iMac G5 (where your music is stored), and go into the iTunes Folder, and choose the "iTunes Music" folder.
Now, tell it to import, and you should start seeing all your music being added to the library.
When you are done, turn off both computers, and disconnect the cable.
Use the normal method to shut-down the Mac Mini first, and then press and hold the power button on the iMac until it turns-off.
    Hope this helps.
