Mac mini memory problems

Couple of months ago my Mac mini MC816 with 8GB of RAM started to eat up all of its memory to the very low values so that all the software slows down a lot. I did not have such issues before October 2012 and I did not install any new software or hardware. What can I do to fix this?

Well, I shut Firefox down and ran Safari. One hour passed and now I got the same issue. I guess i have to reinstall OS clean and empty. But I don't really want to.
Thanks for your help and here is the activity:

  • My mac Mini has problem rendering images and video

    THE PROBLEM:
My mac mini has problem rendering JPEG image. There are strips on the images. Other images such as GIF, PNG, TIFF, and BMP are displayed nicely.
The images shown in the links below illustrate the problem:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/terencewong/71481156/
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/terencewong/73360989/
(Please note that this image is grabbed from my faulty Mac Mini and saved into TIFF. For uploading purpose, I converted it into JPEG on ANOTHER computer.)
For movies, AVI can be playback without problem. But when it is converted to MPEG, it looks like an untunned TV channel.
    FIXES TRIED:
I did erase and install 3 to 4 times using both the install disc and my Tiger Family Pack. All ended up with strips on the JPEG images and the generated MPEG movies.
I've also tried to flash the firmware to 113-xxxxx-124 using ATI's october 2005 universal ROM update, however, the ROM Revision shown in System Profiler is still 113-xxxxx-116 no matter how many time I reboot the system.
    INVESTIGATION:
Yesterday, I did some research and got to know that JPEG and MPEG are using DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) for decompression. And the ATI Radeon 9200 chip provide such a transform on hardware basis, which free the CPU from doing something else. Feel free to point out my inaccuracy.
    HARDWARE SPECIFICATION:
I bought the Mac Mini in the last Februray.
The system Boot ROM version is: 4.8.9f1
Display card is ATI Radeon 9200
    Chipset Model: ATY,RV280
    Revision ID: 0x0001
    ROM Revision: 113-xxxxx-116
    A POSSIBLE CONCLUSION:
I suspect that it is this part of the chip (the DCT) that is faulty.
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Many thanks!

Assuming that your display is tightly connected, thus the problem is not caused by something as simple as that, the fact that a full erase and install has not removed the problem would, I think, point to this being a hardware issue, and given that everyone's mini (with the possible exception of some of the latest ones) has the same video chipset as yours, and do not suffer the problem that you appear to, it seems very likely that your mini has a fault which is in need of repair.
If you have an Apple Store nearby, I would take it there to have it checked out - at the very least they should be able to replicate your problem using an in-store display, and if not, thusly suggest it's something external to the mini and concerning your display or something very unusual in the immediate environment of the mini. If you don't have an Apple Store in reach, I'd take the system to an Apple authorized service provider since at the present time it is under warranty.

  • Mac Mini RAM Problem

    Hi to all!!
    That's my (new) problem:
after an incredible reanimation of my "dead" Mac Mini (it wasn't turn on at all except the white LED at the front), now the system can't read the total amount of installed RAM Memory.
This Mini has installed 512MB in 2 banks of 256MB each. I'm sure of this because I opened the Mini and I seen this 2 banks. But:
    - in Mac OS X, system recognizes only 256MB (and, in System Profiler, Bank #1 results empty)
    - in Windows, system recognizes only 224MB and Intel Video Card see 32MB of video memory instead of 64MB
    Other details:
    - Apple Hardware Test DOESN'T reveals any problem!
    - Windows memory diagnostics (from Windows Vista install DVD) also DOESN'T reveal any problem
    - MemTest86 and another RAM tester reveals, at the opposite, RAM problems in several sectors.
This Mini has been previously repaired from an Apple Center for the same problem, and they have replaced both RAM banks. It's possible that, again, RAM banks has became faulty?? And, over all, that 2 faulty RAM banks DOESN'T cause any Kernel Panic or Windows 's BSOD???
If it can be usefully... also the built-in Wireless Card has stopped its work, in Windows and in Mac OS X: WiFi card is seen from the System but any WiFi Network is found....
    Please help me!!
    Thanks to all!

Your best bet is to get the RAM replaced by high quality to spec RAM*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
If the same RAM tests fail again, then you can likely suspect the RAM slots themselves were never repaired.

com.apple.NVDAResman seems to be a common problem, I think some have moved the kext to correct it... might search that out.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Mac mini startup problems

My Mac mini usually runs fine, when Im done using it I put it to sleep, when I need it I tap any key on the keyboard and it
usually wakes up.  I have noticed that when we watch videos that are downloaded on the computer with Quicktime Player
that the computer does not wake up with a tap on the keyboard.  I have to press the power button on the mac mini to get it to start,
I have a grey screen, with the icons still visible and a power up indicator.  It takes about 10 seconds to get the screen back to normal.
I have plenty of free space in memory 966.09 free of 999.35.  Any idea what is causing this problem?  Should I be concerned? If yes,
    how do I fix it?
Mac mini  OS X 10.9.5   processor 2.3 GHz   Intel Core i7
    Memory 4 GB 1600MHz  DDR3
    Thanks,   Richard

    Hey 8149,
Based on your description of the waking sequence when this happens (grey screen, power up indicator, can't wake from keyboard), it sounds like your Mac mini is entering Safe Sleep, which can be perfectly normal if the machine has been idle for a while. You may find the information in the following article helpful:

  • Mac Mini Mail Problem

Hi - I recently bought a Mac Mini so that I could have a desktop and a laptop (I'd been using the Titanium G4 as both) and I have been having trouble with the email on the Mini. Right off, I should say that the G4 had 768MB of RAM whereas my Mini only has 512MB. But the Mini is 1.5 GHz versus just 800 MHz for the G4. (I clearly don't know which of those matters more in a situation like this.)
Anyway, whenever someone sends me a large file now, it takes a dog's age to get it on the Mini. And while it's clearly downloading it in the background, it seems to ignore if I delete other emails, etc. For example, I might read 10 emails and delete them, and notice that I have wait for some attachment to download, and minimize mail in the interim. When I open it again, those same emails that I deleted are in my inbox again. Occasionally, I have gone to mac.com to delete files, and eventually my mail app notices this and deletes them as well, but clearly large files are causing a problem when they're sent to me.
It's not a bandwidth issue, as my G4 handled large attachments way better with the same Internet connection, and continues to do so while wirelessly connected to it. My guess is it's the RAM, but I really don't know. Do I need to go out and double the RAM on the Mini to make this stop?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • New Mac Mini USB problem

I have a brand new Mac Mini (December, 2011, 10.7.2) as well as an older Mac Mini (circa 2005, 10.6.4).
I bought a new GearHead USB wireless mouse to go with the new mini.
The mouse works fine on the old Mini (and also on a Windows PC).
On the new Mini, the mouse works until the Mini hibernates or powers down. On wake-up, the mouse doesn't work until I unplug and replug the USB transmitter.  This is the case on all USB ports on the Mini, as well as on the keyboard and monitor USB ports. It doesn't matter which port I use or which port I unplug and replug into - I always need to unplug and replug the transmitter to get it to work after power- or hibernate-cycle.
Note that I have also tried a Logitech USB wireless mouse and an Apple Bluetooth mouse and they both work fine on both the new Mini and the old Mini.
The problem is only occurs between the Gearhead brand USB mouse and New Mac Mini (10.7.2).
I assume that the problem is that the mini is powering down the USB port and not refreshing it after power cycle, until I unplug and replug the transmitter. Alternatively, I suppose, the transmitter could be asserting itself early in the boot process before the Mini is awake enough to hear it.  In either case, it seems that the band-aid fix is a command-line to force the OS to refresh the ports, but I can't find any reference to such a command.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Hello,
I assume that the problem is that the mini is powering down the USB port and not refreshing it after power cycle,
To me it seems like when the usb is powered down the trnasmitter loses the signal with the mouse, i think your mini is perfectly fine, even though the mouse works fine on the old mini I think its how the transmitter handshakes with the new mouse on the new mac mini. Do you have a new mouse of the same brand that you can test and see if it has the same issue...
If so then it forsure the transmitter... not the mini... else take your mini in for health check.
good luck, let me know how u go...

  • 2011 mac mini admin problem

i have bought a mac mini 2011 and have all my passwords from previous  owner but after rebooting it ive lost all my permissions,my system preferences wont open ,it trys to but immediately shuts down,i cant sign in to my apple id or i tunes.i have a internet connection it seems like i have guest privlages but i cant fix it becuse system preffrences wont work im loosen it ,please help

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.

  • Mac mini Overscan problem

Hello, i just purchased a Mac mini and have connected it with DVI to HDMI onto my Panasonic plasma TV. The problem with this was if i turn overscan on the display is too big and is extended over the sides and some area isn't visble to me. If i turn overscan off there are black areas which is not covered around the sides of the screen. I have never had this with my PC connecting to this TV with HDMI DVI. But for some reason this problem is happneing to me right now...is there a Mac special software that can adjust the screen size so i can stretch the display around to manipulate it to a full screen size without anything being cut out or under cut in my display?

When you connected the PC and had no trouble with overscan, is there a way to capture the details of the timing involved? Because if you apply the same settings from the mini, there is no reason the TV shouldn't react to timing in the same way, meaning no overscan.

  • Mac Mini Audio Problem

    Hi,
My Mac mini is only sending sound to one side of the headphone. I can get sound on the right but no sound on the left. I'm wondering if the sound card might need replacing ???
    Any help would be appreciated.

Actually I'm trying to hook it up to my stereo so I was trouble shooting with the headset as I only get sound from one speaker. The Bose rep suggested I try a head phone to make sure the problem is coming from the mac mini. Is it possible to hook up to a stereo via a usb?(USB to Stereo input cables?) Also do you think that would help? I've tried new head phone to stereo cables between the two and same problem....

  • Mac Mini Burn Problem

    Hello,
I have been trying to burn a CD using my Mac Mini, which has a built in SuperDrive, but cannot complete large capacity burns. It can burn 14MB worth of photos/videos, but cannot complete a video CD burn, made with Toast 7, or an hour and five minute in length Audio burn with iTunes. It is reporting the following errors, in order:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x0C
    WRITE ERROR
    and then:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
I have tried a lense cleaning disc, and two different types of CD, and it has made no difference. I have a feeling that the inside of the mini is quite dusty, so that might be the problem, but I'm afraid of actually opening it to clean it, in case I invalidate the warranty, and then left to pay to fix it myself. On the other hand, if I arrange for it to be looked at by Apple, and they find it is dust, then I might be charged for it anyway! So, I'm looking for advice/past experiences etc. please.
    Thanks Very Much,
    Thomas Wright.

I have DVD-RW discs from TDK, that I can burn no problem in my Mac mini, but cannot get the Power Mac to recognize when I'm trying to access files on them, keeps asking to initialize, even though the optical drive isn't a rewritable. I would like to replace the drive with a rewritable, what brand/model would work in OS 9?
In the past Pioneer drives have been a safe bet and are even bootable. However, check [Jeff's January 2010 post about re-branded Pioneer drives|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10839236#10839236] that are no longer really Pioneer manufactured.
You could start by looking at what's on www.macsales.com. I know you're in Oz but OWC is a good place for reference for Mac compatibility.

  • Mac Mini Booting Problem

My mac mini has developed a problem starting up. The computer turns on and goes to the gray screen but on the gray screen the apple logo does not appear. After a few minutes the screen just goes gray with a folder flashing from a question mark to a finder logo. I tried the reinstall disks but nothing happend. Any ideas??

The timing of holding down the C key to boot from the install disk can be tricky. You may have to experiment.
Force the Mini to turn off by holding down the power button for 5 seconds. Then restart and hold down the C key as soon as you hear the startup chime or beep. (Again, you may have to experiment with the timing slightly -- and you have to have a wired USB keyboard for this to work. Borrow one if you don't have one.)
If none off this works, you can usually eject the CD during the startup process by holding down the mouse button, assuming you have a wired mouse.

  • Mac Mini boot problem - Debugger called: panic ?

after i push the start button, the first page shows "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up." it was written in six languages... secondly, the page i show in this picture appear for just a few second, but i manage to snap a picture on it using my ipad2. after that it repeats the same thing from the first page again and again for several times until it shut down by itself... i do not know what could possibly wrong with that, before it happen i was just finished installing Xcode from itunes store. please help me, i just bought this mac mini 2 weeks ago.

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • ? re: Mac mini boot problem

Hi. I have a mac mini that has performed flawlessly for 14 months. 2 days ago we had a power interruption and when I restarted it, it seemed to start up fine, but it would not recognize the mouse clicks. I can move the pointer around the screen with the mouse but it dosen't respond to the clicks or any keystrokes for about 10 minutes. After about 10 minutes of sitting idle, what ever app or menu that was clicked on opens and then the computer works fine. Since it doesn't recognize mouse clicks or keystrokes until approx. 10 minutes after boot up, this precludes me from using any startup key combinations such "C" to reinstall the OS. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi John, tried to follow your instruction but I feel I don't have the confidence to continue. I booked an appointment with the local Apple shop and had the guy at the Genius Bar check it over. He did the checks you recommend and memory and hardware looked Ok. He did find some permissions incorrectly set, he thought these were stopping the boot. These permissions seemed mainly to be printer operating programmes that are pre loaded in the OS for plug and play service.
These were automatically corrected and the mac rebooted without further work. This took about 30 minutes and there was no charge so all's well that ends well.
Thank you so much for your assistance
    Neil
