Mac Mini MiniDisplayPort-to-VGA issue

Hi all,
We have a brand new Mac Mini in our office (not the one in my sig) connecting to a VGA projector via a MiniDisplayPort-to-VGA adapter. When the Mac Mini reboots the projector loses connection and it can take multiple reboots, repeated plugging/unplugging of all cables and a frustratingly long time to get video back up and running. We've tried usual tricks like applying all outstanding software updates and resetting PRAM, SMC etc.
Anyone got any ideas?
Regards,
RT.

This does seem to unfortunately be a universal problem on the new Mac mini with VGA screens.
The apparent best workaround is to boot the Mac without the adapter connected, then after it has finished booting plug the adapter in.
If you can you could try using DVI instead, many projectors support DVI as well.

  • Asus vh232h out of range, Mac mini thunderbolt to vga

    Hey guys,
Pretty much what the title says.....
    Mac mini
Asus vh232h (VGA only, no dvi socket)
    Thunderbolt to VGA adapter
    VGA cable (I've tried several)
(Benq monitor running fine on the hdmi port)
In short, if I use a VGA cable under 1.8m, there's no problem.
If I use a cable of 3m in length, or two x 1.8m cables, I get a "Out of range" message on the monitor.
(My office is shared space, so I need the Mac mini to be inside a lockable cupboard.  That means I need a cable longer than 1.8m)
FYI, I don't seem to be able to set the asus monitor resolution in Mac settings (not sure if it can be done when monitor is 'out of range', but I can see the Asus in Display settings, Arrangement. It looks about half the width and height of the benq.
Is a monitor supposed to connect successfully over a 3 m cable?
Will a thunderbolt to dvi adapter work? (Would have to buy new monitor)
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Darren

Bought a new benq 24" monitor, moshi mini display port to hdmi adapter, and 5m hdmi cable.
    Sorted.
Must be an issue with apple mdp to VGA adapter when using VGA cables over 1.8m long.

  • Mac mini mid-2011 display issues 1920x1200 on a HDMI monitor?

Just puchased a mac mini and am challenged by the display settings.  When I first powered it on using either a display port to HDMI or supplied hdmi to DVI (then the monitor's DVI to HDMI cable), the display is severly off center with issues seeing the system bar on top and icons on bottom.  So, once I was able to get to the System Panel, I found that it configured itself to 1920x1200.  I cannot get 1080p to center and 1080i has grainy text.  Does this mean I need another apple accessory, ie display port to vga?  Or is this an indicator that monitor and mac mini are incompatible?  Or is this an indicator that the mac mini has a lemon card?
(NOTE: I am downloading system updates to see if there is a firmware update. Thanks
    Proc - 2.5 i5
    Mem - 4 GB
    Graphics - Radeon 6630M
    OS - OX Lion 10.7.3
Monitor- LG L246WP  (3 hook ups: componet, vga, hdmi)

Your monitor has a native pixel resolution of 1920x1200.  There is no point in trying for 1080-p or -i.
I run two 1920x1200 monitors via HDMI (with passive cable adapters where necessary) and I use these choices:
...and they are both pixel-sharp, filling the screen, and yet menu bars totally visible!

  • Mac Mini and thunderbolt/vga to LCD TV

    Hi All,
    Here is an interesting one......
I have just taken delivery of 5 new Mac Minis which have the thunderbolt port on them.  The Mac Minis each connect using displayport tb/vga adapter to a switch then on to 5 LCD TVs.
    The HDMI/DVI is not used.
In this config, if I start a Mac Mini the display will not route through the Thunderbolt/vga adapter to any of the TVs (even though I have selected them on the switch). The display seems to want to go through the default HDMI port.
If I connect a standard PC monitor to the tb/vga adapter and reboot, the screen shows correctly on the monitor.  If I then change cables without a reboot, the LCD TVs show correctly!
I can add the PC monitor as a second monitor using HDMI/DVI and ensure that the outputs are mirrored AND that the VGA display is the primary.  However, on reboot it's as if the details are all forgotten!
Searching around it seems that there are issues with Mac Minis and VGA connections to LCD TVs.  That said, I wanted to put my environment out there and see if anyone had an ideas.
Interestingly enough, with older Mac Minis (without the tb/vga) it works perfectly well, indicating a problem with the new Mac Minis.
    Thanks for ANY ideas!!!!

    Hey Spost!
You have explained exactly what happened to me last night.  I was afraid it was part of the 10.8.3 update or the latest ATV software update that hit this week.   I tried from my macbook pro and the airplay from 10.8.3 and the atv software worked fine.
Previously my mac mini was connected to a monitor in my basement but last night i made it "headless" and moved it to my "server closet"  airplaying prior to the move worked great ... then last night 4:3 Green Screen.
My guess is the computer needs to be connected to a external display in order for airplay resolution to figure itself out.   Via Logmein i could see that the Mirror mode wanted to use the resolution that fit the mac and not what was best for the Apple TV ... Even forcing the change made the setting go right back to this mac.
Looks to be a bug in a plist file that apple would need to fix as many people run headless mac mini's and now wish to AirPlay to their Apple TV's without the need for a external cable run.

  • Can I use a Mac mini with a VGA monitor?

The Mac mini web page lists an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter as an accessory, but the Mac mini doesn't appear to have a Mini DisplayPort.
The Mac mini also has an HDMI to DVI Adapter included, but would this allow a VGA monitor to be connected via an additional DVI to VGA cable? ie. can the HDMI port provide an analogue signal that a VGA monitor can receive?

Some Mac Minis do have mini-DisplayPorts.  In these two it is between the HDMI and the USB ports:
    (yes Thunderbolt should accept mini-Displayport).
In this one it is between the Mini-DVI and the USB ports:
Only the oldest Intel models would you need a different adapter to VGA
Those you would need a DVI to VGA adapter from Apple such as this one.  Note, DVI to VGA is converting digital to analog, and not very useful, unless your TV has neither DVI nor HDMI.  DVI is much better converted up to HDMI.  And the audio would have to come in separately.  So depending on your display model and make, you may be asking for the wrong adapter.  VGA is fine if all you are going to do is view DVDs on an old TV.  But if you want the ability to use the Dock, menubar, etc..., it is good to have a 1080p TV with built-in HDMI or better.

  • Mac mini hdmi to VGA

On my Mac mini, I have been using thunderbolt to VGA for a monitor & it works fine. I would like to add a second monitor. I bought a hdmi to VGA but when plugged in, there is no picture on the second display and the first display blinks off & on. Am I wrong in thinking this should work? How else would I get the second display?

    From:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4214
Can the HDMI port drive analog displays (VGA displays for example) using adapters?
No.  The HDMI port will drive digital connections—such as DVI—using the adapter that came with the Mac mini, but cannot be used for analog displays such as VGA. You can purchase a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter separately to drive analog displays.
If yo really need ton use two VGA monitors yo willneed a UBS video adopter

  • No signal to VGA monitor using Mac mini display to VGA adaptor and first time boot Mac mini

Just unpacked Mac mini and powered up using Mac mini to VGA display adaptor and VGA monitor. There is no signal to the monitor ( power is on).
    How to see the display?

[    13.093] (==) No Layout section.  Using the first Screen section.
[    13.093] (==) No screen section available. Using defaults.
    [    13.093] (**) |-->Screen "Default Screen Section" (0)
    [    13.093] (**) |   |-->Monitor "<default monitor>"
[    13.093] (==) No monitor specified for screen "Default Screen Section".
            Using a default monitor configuration.
First step would be to create the necessary entries (easier to make a complete xorg.conf versus xorg.conf.d/##-whatever.conf).
All Desktop Environments / Window Managers rely on X.  Man pages are helpful, possibly some headaches ahead as I fought a dual-monitor display this way.
I currently run a xrandr script to switch displays on my hp pavilion: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xrandr#Scripts

  • Mac Mini (mid 2011) Display Issues

    Hello.
Recently I started having some issues with the display from my Mac Mini (mid 2011, core i7, 8GB, OS X 10.9). During usage the screen started flickering erratically and then went blank. I turned the Mac off and found that it was very hot so I removed the bottom cover and the RAM chips and gave it a bit of a clean (it was quite dusty) then I allowed it to cool before putting it back together. After putting it back together it worked for about a day until it had the same problem.
Now on startup the following occurs:
    1. On the start-up screen (where the Apple logo is displayed) the screen is overwhelmingly pink (display RGB settings are fine), except for the left half of the Apple logo which remains grey.
    2. After progressing through the start-up screen the display goes white and nothing further happens.
I have checked the display and it works fine. The HDMI cable is not the issue either.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this and a possible fix?
If it is of any help the monitor is an ASUS MT276H.
    Thanks.

So I have tried a SMC reset and all that has changed is the front indicator light is off and the fan has kicked it up to 11. Please find a picture of the display I described earlier at the following link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wirrc01xut3p8tx/Photo%201-12-2013%2010%2054%2004%20pm. jpg (sorry it was taken with an iPhone 4).
I have never performed an SMC reset before but it seems like it is taking a long time and/or not working. I'm at a loss to what this might be.

  • OS X 10.8.5 mac mini hdmi audio output issue

I am running a 2012 Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.5 and my Mac is set for audio and video output via HDMI to my AV receiver / TV. I have recently noticed that HDMI audio output ceases to function once the computer goes to sleep. A full computer restart is required to resolve the issue which is an inconvenience to say the least.
Or is anyone aware of a simple fix?
All my software is up to date, the HDMI lead and connection works fine for video and audio works fine after a restart so it must surely be a software error. Worked fine until the latest OS X update...
    Grateful for any help!

  • New mac mini w/HP monitor issues - 1st apple

just purchased mac mini, hooked up to HPw19e monitor via VGA adapter cable. Montior had previously been greta, now font is fuzzy and can't calibrate to fix. If I get a DVI / HDMI cable to monitor instead, will that help?
frustrated - thanks for any help, new to macs as was looking forward to the out of the box experience...

1440 x 900 (the native pixel resolution of that display) is the ONLY resolution that will give you a sharp display. Are you using that resolution?
DVI/HDMI will be a little sharper, but even VGA should be pretty good.  If it's fuzzy, there's a settings problem.

  • Mac mini to 2 VGA monitors? IS it possible?d

I am very interested in purchasing a Mac Mini. I would like to connect it to 2 VGA monitors. Is this possible? And if yes, how do i go about getting this done.

Yep. However the quality won't be on par with digital connections like HDMI and DVI. You will need a mini Display Port to VGA adapter ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A ) as well as a HDMI to VGA adapter ( http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-VGA-HD15-Male-Cable/dp/B001OLCHJ6 )

  • Mac Mini Ethernet SSL connection issues

    Hi,
Up until recently I have been using my Late 2012 Mac mini with a WiFi connection. Recently though I've had reason to switch to a Gigabit Ethernet connection (short version, moved from UK to Canada, living with in-laws and they have a crappy wireless router that can't hold a stable connection for more than a few hours).
However, I'm getting a really odd Ethernet network issue where my mac will "corrupt" SSL connections. This normally manifests itself in web pages not fully downloading, images becoming corrupted, or errors when downloading files. The last one is particularly hurting as I have been doing some heavy downloading of DMG files and other installers, all of which are a 100% guaranteed fail with DMG files reporting as being corrupted if I try to open them.
I have also lost my time machine backup as OSX has reported that this has failed verification and needs to be created new; I accepted creating a new one (reluctantly) and the backup now fails to complete every time it runs - either the wireless cuts out or the SSL connection corrupts the backup.
I have a 16-port GigE Switch (Netgear GS116) with a number of computers and the home modem plugged into this.
I've tried the following to look at this:
I've tried (and tested) a number of different Cat5e and Cat6 cables. These all work fine with other Windows / Linux machines and according to my cable tester all check out. 100% of the cables I own produce the error leading me to believe that it's not a cable problem.
Problem occurs even if the switch is bypassed and the mac plugged directly into the modem.
Problem does not occur (for web pages and small downloads) when plugged into wireless - this is just sloooow and as the router seems to develop issues with DNS over WiFi, I have to reset it every few hours so long term downloads fail.
I found an article (which I have now lost the URL for) where someone suffered intermittent network issues with Ethernet that they resolved by un-checking the "Enable automatic connection" on the 802.1X page of the network settings. This appeared to help for a couple of days and I enjoyed fast Ethernet and downloads once more. However, today the problem is back in force.
I am able to download files from a windows machine (well, except for downloads via the App store) and then transfer them over the network to the mini with no problems at all - the corruption issue only seems to occur when SSL is involved.
So I'm wondering what it could be and how I would go about diagnosing the issue. I'm more familiar with Windows / Linux systems, having not owned a Mac since the days of System 7 - the mini was bought so I could play with learning XCode and try my hand at Mac software development.
    Thanks in advance,
    ~MrBasset.
