Mac mini - next upgrade...

Hi Folks,
I'm about to buy a Mac mini, to use with my HD TV - I'm looking forward to it! I've put off buying the mini, because of the various rumours I've seen on the subject of the HDMI port that's supposed to be on the latest version. However, nothing was mentioned at the WWDC (or at least, nothing that I've heard of!)
What should I do - wait, or buy!!

Place Mac Mini next to Castle Bastion Center speaker, will it kill the HD

I just bought a Mac mini as replacement for my Apple TV. The Apple TV was right under the TV, sitting on it's stand, and about 7cm below was the center speaker. Now I want to place an external HD and my Mac Mini right next to my Castle Bastion Center Speaker. Will this damage my Mini's HD or the external HD drive. I don't know if this center speaker is shielded or not.. I've also read pc mag article that there is nothing to worry about, but what are your experiences? I'd rather be on the safe side then not... but there is more than enough room for Mac Mini next to the speaker, so why shouldn't I put it there... help!!!??

I notice you mention being limited to a 4:3 resolution with the VGA connection. If you use composite or S-video you will be using an SD signal, which will normally just be 640x480, which is a 4:3 aspect ratio. The VGA and component connections should offer the highest resolutions. What is the model number of your projector, as I can find very little information about the Illumina series - and what I can find relates to 4:3 only.

Newly installed Mac Mini legally upgraded to Mountain Lion is unstable 2.4Gh Dual, 8Gb RAM. Had to repeat initial install three times, then would not shut down. Reinstalled, seemed better, kernel panics happening and restarting, removed 3rd party devices. Zapped PRAM and fixed file permissions.
Any ideas welcome.

Mac Mini RAM upgrade: failure after one week

After severe performance problems with Aperture, I decided to go for an RAM upgrade to 2x4GB. Went to my (non-Apple) dealer, got me two DDR3 1333Mhz Samsung bricks and put them in. Worked like a chime. Startup went fine, RAM types shown in the Activity Monitor with plenty of free RAM and great performance... for a change.
After a week however my Mac froze. A restart gave me two beeps and a flashing light in front. Manual tells me 'wrong RAM type'. Same situation after replacing only one of the bricks.
A bit weird after a week of juicy operation?
Getting back the old RAM installed resulted in a working Mac - but with the limited memory obviously.
Will go back to the dealer and have the RAM replaced next week.
Ever heard about RAM failing after a well?

right, I went back to my dealer and got the RAM sticks replaced. the miniMac booted up at the store and is now working fine again. Let's see for how long.

I had checked the serial number and RAM chip IDs with the Samsung tool from their homepage. Looked just fine.
To my limited knowledge about Silicon production it would not be too easy to produce fake RAM sticks that
- are accepted by the HW check
- show the capacity as specified
- .. but fail after few days (haha!)

Dropping WiFi Connections after new Mac Min and Upgrade

First of all does anyone know why this discussion was archived when there was never a solution posted?

Secondly (why I found that thread among many others addressing the same problem). I received a new Mac Mini for XMas (cool, I needed it) which worked fine with my other computer and devices (2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 Win7 Laptops and 2 Win7 desktops) for a couple days, so I thought. Now all these devices got along very well until Mr. Mini comes along. Then I note wireless drops occasionally, it seemed to come back so I wasn't too upset, yet and decided to deal with it later and enjoy my vacation.
Now, after I allowed Leopard to do its upgrade (I had deferred that) I now have all the above devices dropping wifi and physical LAN connections as long as this Mini is powered on. I shut it off, Internet is blazing, I turn it on, Internet falters and screeches to a halt.
Since all my other devices have worked cooperatively for several years and this device comes along and crashed the party im pretty convinced its not my router or computers. I am not interested in trial and error here. i have many better more important things to do and this is Apples responsability to figure out. I am a very savy IT dude (career professional) and want to get to the bottom of this for everyone.
Soooo.... What changed? Why does this device kill my network when it is turned on (note, no alterations from out-of-the box to any network protocol or config.) and why does a thread (one of many) without a solution get trumped on by Apple?

2007 Mac mini Mavericks upgrade?

Hi, coming from the list of machines eligible for OS X Mavericks, my Mac mini is not included. However, the AppStore says I can. Do I make the upgrade or it will not proceed? Thanks. Maybe somebody out there already did upgrade not on the list.

Your Mac Mini is limited to Lion, no later. As I recall the limitation is due to that Mini's GPU.

Mac mini Processor upgrade

Hello,
Can I upgrade the processor in my Mac mini ? If so is there a limit to speed ? I was looking at the 2.16ghz chip...I think mine is the T2300 (yonah) and the 2.16ghz is the T2600 (similar energy consumption I believe?) Is it worth it in speed terms ? Im not bothered about taking mini apart etc Im in the process of upgrading the hard drive so the chip is the only thing left...any tips, advice, tutorial would be great.

You certainly can upgrade the processor, all the way to a 2.4GHz Core2 Duo.
However I'm afraid I can't give you a part number; I'm much more PowerPC focused, but I do know it's a 'mobile' chip/socket. I suggest a quick Google search; I was reading through a discussion on another site about the subject a few months ago.
It's quite easy to get in there and upgrade it, and what you want to do is use a little half-pea-sized drop of thermal paste on the CPU die itself(to ensure it's properly aligned).
Before you do so, remember to clean the top of the CPU & the contact point on the heatsink thoroughly; I believe isopropyl alcohol is the best for this.
Now having said all that, I wouldn't really consider this a worthwhile upgrade. The Core2 Duo processors you need really aren't cheap - I would, instead, recommend waiting for Apple to update the mini's specifications, and investing in a new model. Upgrading the processor in yours or buying a current-generation one would net you very little by way of performance gains; you'd still be stuck with the atrocious onboard graphics, among other things.

Edit: Thought I'd throw this in here; I've just noticed your current processor is a 1.66GHz Core Duo.
Upgrading to a >2GHz Core2 Duo might be worthwhile if you can easily afford it; you'll gain 64-bit computing & a substantial speed boost.
However, do keep in mind that such CPUs will cost you a good percentage of a new computer - for an overall better experience, maybe look into a new iMac?
I'm starting to feel a bit hypocritical - considering the amount of money I've spent upgrading my old PowerMac.

Mac mini server upgrade

I have Mac mini Lion server and wnt to upgrade to Yosemite.
Is it preferable to upgrade first the server osx or Yosemite.
Just to avoid problems with the setups etc.

Mac Mini Server upgrading from Lion 10.7.1 to Lion 10.7.2 Freezes in upgrade install reboot. What's wrong?

After downloading and installing Lion upgrade 10.7.1, my Mac Mini (2010 model)) server will reboot to the Apple logo, but no spinning dial - freezes - requiring re-installation of the 10.7.1 version (which runs well.) Two upgrades are included in the update - Lion Recovery Update and Mac OSX Update. Should these be installed separately of together as they are downloaded? Am I doing something wrong? The machine has been continuously updated since OSX Lion came out so I am not lacking currency in the OS prior to this update.

What I have is: the MacPro 1.1 (2006) and a MacBookPro (2009).
Inside the MacPro:
(1) Start Disc
(2) 2nd Startdisk backed up by SuperDuper from (1) (without Parallels disk)
(3) Media (backup on TimeCapsule)
(4) TM backup of (1) without Parallels
(5): USB-Cradle with my last SnowLeo system-hard disk.
All tests to boot failed with: disk (1) Recovery HD (it is there!) , disk (2), external disk (5), Lion Install DVD , Recovery HD from a USB-Stick (created on my MBP).
All tests ended with a grey blank screen :-(
I'm German, so my English has limits. What do you mean with:
1. "Pull the bump system drive " ? Should I open my mac and put the old start disk aside ?
(by the way: I have a backup-drive inside the MacPro from this start disk.)
2. "Do a clean install of OS". On which disk ? A new one ?
3. "Put the old working system in FW case". ? FW case ? FW=FireWire ? case? I'm sorry, I do not understand what you mean.
4. "Update and install". What has to be updated ? The new installed Lion ?
5. "Import / Migrate with Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant" ? Can't I migrate from "2nd StartDisk" ?
6. "I am sure there is an uninstaller for Parallels 7 though not whether it can run from another system." I cannot use the uninstaller, as I am not able to boot the Mac :-(
7. The first OS on the MacPro was 10.4.6 (Tiger) I had Leo, SnowLeo and now Lion. So I believe it will be the moment to build a new clean Lion system.

Can I use install disk from my Mac mini to upgrade OS on my iMac

No you can't. The install discs came with the Mac mini are bundled to Mac minis. So when you try to install with the Mac mini install discs, you'll get an error. You have to get the Snow Leopard package for $29 which is free to install on every Mac matching the system requirements.

Mac Mini Ram Upgrade Help!

Just bought my first Mac computer about 7 months ago, The minimac. Now this little monster is fast still for only 1gb of ram, and i'm running all high end Adobe softwear that requires 2 gb or more on regular computers, but she started to lag alittle using Adobe Premiere Pro cs4, so i decided to buy 4 gb of ram from ebay(brand New). I got the ram took my mini apart, did everything proper, destaticed myself etc and installed the 2 ram chips. after i went to boot up I got 1 Beep and a light every 10 secs maybe? So first thing i thought the ram was defective, So i tested the ram with my 1 gb in one slot and a 2 gb in the other and she booted fine and showed 3 gb ram. I tested the other 2 gb as well and worked fine. Don't understand why they wouldn't work together. So i said *** i'll just use 3gb instead and have a back up if the other 2 gb fails. Now after 2 hours of using my computer she froze solid, so i restarted and then i got a grey screen, 3 lights/3beeps. This means ram not recongized as far as i'v learned I may be wrong, so now i'm back with just my 1 gb in my comp running fine. Any ideas what could be the problem here?

Trouble getting online with Mac mini since upgrade to maverick

Although it shows full strength in the upper right, I cannot get online via Safari since my upgrade to Maverick, although Firefox works.

according to Software Update I am up to date - the Safari update was installed on 4/1 - can't remember if this problem started then - possibly.
I use my ipad for almost everything - rarely use the mini anymore except to print or access flash content.
This all came up as I am having scanner/printer issues since Maverick as well. I have been trying to fix that

Upgrade plan for elderly mac mini

Hi All,
I have a couple of questions; I'm finally planning to get brave and crack open the shell of my mac mini and upgrade both RAM and hard disk.
Firstly, Crucial inform me that the maximum supported memory in my model of Mini is 2gb (2*1). This is obviously the most that they will guarantee, but is there any benefit to be gained from trying say 2*2gb or will that cause problems? Currently I'm on Tiger but would upgrade once the new memory is in all the way up to 10.6.
This brings me onto my next question. I believe that in order to move from 10.4 to 10.6 you have to buy the Box Set (http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC680Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5Mw&mco=MTM3NDgxODU#over view). Do we think that if bought during the black Friday sales it would be in the time period to qualify for a rebate on Lion when it comes out in the summer of 2011?
Finally I just want to double check that there is no problem in upgrading the hard disk up to the realms of 750gb (u.f.), I can't think of one but would love to know of people's experiences with this.

You can put 2 x 2GB sticks in it - I believe the OS will see about 3.2GB of that, but it won't cause you any problems.
You can put a 7200rpm disk in - some claim it will run hotter and/or noisier ("a problem"), but I'm sure others have done the switch and had no problems.
Certainly, a BIGGER disk is always much faster anyway, and a 500GB drive (even 5400rpm) will perform much faster than what you have now. Many people feel 500GB/5400rpm is the "sweet spot" for size/speed/low-heat/low-noise/low-price compromise. Just don't use Seagate - many have failed (including mine) - go for WD. IMHO!
Actually, you'd better tell us just how elderly your mini is! If it's a PowerPC G4 mini, you won't get past Leopard, as Snow Leopard is (and Lion will be) Intel-only.

You can not use a DVD that shipped with one Mac to load on to another. To upgrade to Snow Leopard you will need to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD.
