Mac Mini no longer reading DVDs...

Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem with my Mini. As the title states, it won't read DVDs anymore. I don't think it's the drive, as it still reads CDs, and it's definitely not my 100 or so DVDs, as they all work perfectly on my 360.
The only thing I have recently changed on my Mini is I installed iTheater, and MediaCentral to see how they are... Now my Mini won't read DVDs.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Edit: It turns out it was MediaCentral buggering up my system. Did a reboot and uninstalled it and now everything is fine. Beware of this product!

No more problems.
Re- Installed printer driver. It now works.

  • Mac Mini no longer reads or writes DVD-R DL discs

My mac mini stopped reading and writing dual layer DVD-R disks about a year ago for no reason, even ones that IT created in the first place. Is my drive faulty or is there some setting that got changed when I upgraded to Lion and then Mountain Lion?

It's unlikely that the upgrades had anything to do with the problem, slim superdrives are just not all that reliable.
You might try a few tricks before taking it in for service or springing for a Mac compatable external DVD drive.
    1. Reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller
    2. Reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    3. Clean it, for example with a > Memorex OptiDisc CD/DVD Laser Lens Cleaner

  • Mac Mini doesn't read DVD's

When I insert any DVD into my Mac Mini it says Disc not able to be read by this computer.
It reads CDs fine.. I tried to start the DVD player app and it gives an initialization error and that a valid DVD player could not be found..
    It does have a DVD drive:PiOnEeR DvD-Rw DvR-K06
Any idea why it would read CDs not DVDs and appear to have lost all DVD functionality??
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi, read that this strangely worked for a few Mini owners the other day...
Stand the Mini on it's side & try a DVD.

  • Can Mac mini Core Solo read DVD+R DL discs?

    Hi,
I couldn't find the exact specs for this model's DVD-ROM drive. I've read normal DVDs (4.3GB) before on this guy and it's okay.
Then I put some commercial video show DVD disc that I believe is DL (using Nero on a PC, I copied the DVD to hard drive and its size was about 7GB or so, so I figured it's a Dual Layer disc), and the mini seemed to mount it just fine.
Now I'm ready to burn my own DVD+R DL disc (up to 8.5GB I guess) from a PC and hopefully my DVD-ROM drive on this mini can read it...
Does anyone know for sure if this DVD ROM supports DL reading?? Apple's Spec just says "reads DVD," not much more.

    Hey there Boece,
Yeah, I know the best way is to just, "try it."
But I guess I was lazy and figured that someone would
have already known the answer already and would
simply reply and give a definate answer.. I dont see
why Apple's Spec doesnt show this fact it can read DL
discs, it just says generically it can read
    DVD-ROMs... Oh well. heh..
That's because commercial DVDs are commonly dual layer and mostly always have been. It's really only format and +/- compatibility that's a potential issue.
As for the login problem, glad to know it's just not
me.. pheew... sheez, it's such a pain in the butt, to
after login, you have to manevuer thru some more
pages to go back to the page where you can actually
post.. sheez.. Apple, fix this please!!
The L4/5 members have been bashing the ears of the hosts about this for ages now, and they're as fed up with it happening as we all are. It's been pointed out that not only is it inconvenient, but also may give users logging in the erroneous notion that their login has actually failed, and thus they can't (and don't) post. The issue was raised with the support engineers on Jun 20.
L4 member eww posted a fix that works for some in the Lounge (hence I can't link to it here), but here is what was said:
Without logging in, go to the Discussions main page. Drag the "Login" link in the right sidebar into a text editor window, where the URL text will appear. Delete the following text from the end of the URL:
    %3FsuccessURL%3D%2Findex.jspa
Paste the remainder of the URL into your web browser and bookmark it. Hit Enter to log into Discussions with no error message.
The reason I'm not posting the whole URL is that I believe it contains AppleID info that's particular to each user.
This has been working flawlessly for me ever since the problem arose. It happened that I was already using the truncated URL as my login bookmark — I have no recollection of how or when I arrived at it, but it has certainly spared me the annoyance so many others have expressed here.

  • Mac Mini will not read dvd data disk ie osx install disk with internal drive but will read dvd movies

As title said , cant get internal drive to read data dvd's havent tried cd's. I also tried to use an external drive with no luck with any disks. system info shows the drive though. So i guess i have 2 issues. any ideas will help thank you

If the drive can read a movie DVD then the problem must be that the OS DVD is either dirty or badly scratched. Look at the shiny side. If it has finger prints clean it with a lint free cloth. If it has scratches you can call Apple for a replacement disc for a nominal charge.

  • 2010 Mac mini Superdrive not burning DVD's

My mac mini is not burning DVD's right. I put in a 500GB harddrive a few months back and the SATA cables are attached correct. I can read DVD's but writing DVD's doesn't work. The process finishes but when after I eject the disc I can see that nothing is burning in the inner most part of the disc. When I put the disc back in the computer thinks the disc hasn't been burned and asks if it shuld be open in finder like a blank disc. I know a cd/dvd should burn from the center and spiral outward as it writes more data but it seems the disc is offset when it writes its first data, leaving the inner most part of the disc blank. Maybe I should reformat the OS and start from scratch to see if that helps. Any other ideas?

Strange these Memorex DVD's worked flawlessly a couple of times then I started getting these srange burns. I think I'm going to blitz this install I'm backing up with time machine now so I'll see what happens. Is there anyway to reapply an EFI update to make sure nothing is corrupt? I did notice what looked like brownish black burns on the logicboard when I opened it up to put the new harddrive in. They were on the long solder traces where they test the logic board by the the logic boards sata connections. I keep the system on 24/7 but don't really play any 3d or do anything that is too processor intense. Another thing is the superdriver seems to favor the left side when a DVD is initially inserted and ejected but moves to the conter when pressed all the way in I can't remember that being normal.

  • I just bought a new mac mini and an external DVD burner. I want to burn a DVD video and it will not play on the TV but only on the computer? Need this figured out for tomorrow.

I just bought a new mac mini and an external DVD burner. I want to burn a DVD video and it will not play on the TV but only on the computer? Need this figured out for tomorrow. Can anyone help me?

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?
OS X Mountain Lion: Burn a CD or DVD may help.

  • My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.

My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.
I used an iMac G3 (2001) -- the ones that looked like a big pod -- running on OS X and saved files to TDK  CD-R, 700 MB disks, which worked fine. Now that I have a Mac Mini (model number  A1347) I cannot get this computer to read those disks, made on the iMac G3.  Once inserted each disk will open and I can retrieve files for a short period, then the problems start. The computer makes some noises, the beach-ball/pinwheel goes around and I cannot get the files to open or the disk to eject. After a while the disk does eject -- to my relief. I keep using Control+E until ejection happens.
My Mac Mini (2010-2011) is hooked up to a View Sonic HDMI LED monitor, an iOmega external hard-drive for backing up, an Epson Stylus C88 Plus printer and to the internet by a fibre 10MB feed. The Mac Mini runs on OS X version 10.6.8 Snow Leopard: Processor Speed:2.66 GHz
I took the Mac Mini to an Apple retailer and he hooked the computer up to one of his monitors and it read the TDK disks just fine. I am now using Sony CD-RW, 700 MB disks, but I would prefer to use my TDKs because I have such a large pile of blank ones to use and there are those TDK disks with information that I want to look at from time to time. Can anyone tell me what to do?
    DJG

Try disconnecting everything attached to the Mini except the monitor.
If that doesn't work, try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later. If successful, copy the files to the original account Public/Dropbox.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • TS2057 mac mini doesn't see dvd

Recently my mac mini doesn't see dvd's when i put them in to play.

I have to agree with Dah●veed and use an > LG GE24LU20 Reviews that I call Brutus.
Not only has Brutus spared the SuperDrives in both my 2006 iMac and 2010 Mac Mini, but he runs circles around the SuperDrives when it come to burning, importing, playing, even booting from System Install and Upgrade Disc's.

  • Mac Mini won't read external hard drive

Hello, I have an external Toshiba hard drive and my Mac Mini will not read it.  It was originally used on Windows.  I plugged the hard drive into my Macbook and it worked as a read-only device.  I can take stuff off of it but can not write stuff onto it on my Macbook.  I want to use it so I can back up files on my Mac Mini, but it will not read it.  I know I have to format it to make it writable with Mac, but I want to make it a read only device on my Mac Mini because I want to back up all the data already on it and my Mac Mini has 400gb of its hard drive available.  How can I get my Mac Mini to read the Hard Drive?

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the System Management Controller
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • My mac mini won't read or load Turbo Tax 2012 cd.

My Mac mini will not read or load the CD for TurboTax 2012.  Any suggestions?

Just ran into this Turbo Tax 2012 requirement with a friend's 2008 iMac running 10.5.8. She only had 1GB memory in the iMac, which is the Snow Leopard minimum requirement.
After full install of 10.6.3, and (free) software updates, it was a 10.6.8 machine. With just the operating system running, there was 300 MB of the 1 GB memory remaining. Turbo Tax 2012 requires 512 MB of memory, and until the memory was upgraded on this machine, Turbo Tax was erratic due to limited memory. Upgraded to 4GB of memory and the both the iMac and Turbo Tax performance improved substantially.

  • My mac mini will not read a blue ray dvd, how can I fix this?

What can I do to make mac mini play a blue ray disc ?

    Hi
There is NO Mac till yet that has a Blu-Ray player. And the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray are enormous
DVD has a red laser and can only read 4,7Gb SL or about double on DL DVDs.
Blu-Ray has a blue laser and can store in between 25 to 50Gb.
You need a Blu-Ray player - I bought a PlayStation 3 as this is a very good BD-player as well as Game consol.
(No I've no good (fun) games to it - it's just my digital/BD-player)
BTW - No as far as I know of - the miniMac can not be up-graded with a Blu-Ray Player - Any one that knows better
    please correct me.
    Yours Bengt W
