Mac mini now won't even turn on

A series of problems started going on with my mac mini intel when I was attempting to burn a DVD:
-I opened disk utility and attempted to burn a DVD (something I've done many times before), only to find the "burn" button was greyed out and it wouldn't allow me to burn anything.
-I inserted a blank DVD only to have the computer spit it out instants later, I inserted it again, and the same thing happened.
-Finiding this really weird, I checked the DVD image I was attempting to burn with the "get info" button on disk utility and found that it was recognizing the archive as being on an external disk, even though it was on the internal.
-I thought there might be a problem with my disk so I verified it, and disk utility told me everything was fine. So I attempted to reapir disk permissions. After about 15 minutes of DU telling me there was "about a minute" left to go, and the status bar going nowhere, I gave up and decided to boot through the mac OS X installation CD (I have 10.5).
-I put the cd in and held "c" and nothing... the computer booted normally. I did it again and nothing. And now I noticed that the computer didn't recognize the disc, and I couldn't even eject it.
-I tried all the solutions presented here for ejecting, including terminal and sticking a business card to loosen it up, nothing worked. I called my father, and he said we had to reset the parameters by reseting the mac and holding ctrlalt+PR and letting it restart 3 times.
-Well... now the mac mini won't even start up... it turns on, but the monitor doesn't even recognize it and no image shows up. It stays like that for as long as you leave it on, so I eventually had to force a shut down, and try again, to no avail. There's a small beeping noise about twice, and then a stronger sound that suggests it's trying to boot, but nothing... and it heats up a lot.
any ideas?

OK, now when I turn it on the light on front doesn't even go on, and it just starts making a loud exhaust noise (like a "vvvvvvvvvvvvvvv"), and the ventilation in the back goes crazy strong... I had to unplug it

  • Ellipsis Jetpack won't connect and now won't even turn on

I have been having a problem with my Toshiba running Vista , connecting to my Ellipsis jetpack. I called customer service and while the rep was very courteous and helpful, she stated the problem was a security issue with my laptop. I took several measures to disable the security features but to no avail.  Finally, I took the laptop and jetpack in to Verizon yesterday to get some answers. Two different service reps attempted to solve my problem. The second rep finally told me that this is a known problem with Vista/Ellipsis compatibility. He kindly offered the solution of upgrading to a newer version of Windows. After returningbhome and doing some research, i find that my Toshiba doesn't meet the requirements to upgrade. Does this mean I have to buy a new computer to connect to my jetpack???? On top of that, the jetpack shut down this morning while I was actually connected and working online, and now it won't turn back on, even after a hard reset. Frustrated and dissatisfied. Can anyone help???

I too have an Ellipsis jetpack. Unfortunately the Verizon CSR(s) you spoke to gave out a lot of misinformation.
Since you've been able to connect to the Ellipsis in the past it should not be an encryption issue (security). However you could log into the Ellipsis and change the security from WPA2 to WPA to see if that resolves your problem. Do you have the ability to connect a different wireless device to see if it can connect and remain connected?
There are no "compatibility issues" with systems running Vista and connecting to the Ellipsis.
If your laptop runs Vista then it will handle Windows 7 or 8. Most drivers should be installed automatically, but you may have to find some on your own.
    Regarding the power issue:
Pull the power cord & battery out of the Ellipsis for 10 min, then reconnect and hold the power switch to power it on.
I would also recommend that you see if there is a driver update for your wireless adapter. Don't just rely on Windows Update or Toshiba's website either. Get the model # of the adapter and go to the mfg's site for the latest driver - especially if it's Realtek, Intel, or Atheros since they are often updated.

  • It's been power cycling (turns off while in use) with increasing frequency, and now won't even turn on. What gives?

My phone has been turning off while in use, and would, in the past, recover if I turned it off and on.
Now it won't do anything, and I know that the battery is not dead. What gives?

    Hello Hoges,
About your question of connecting the Elitepad directly to another PC via USB.
Since the tablet is considered a full windows PC, you cannot connect it directly to another PC via USB.
Androids and Apple iphones, etc etc. are different than a windows PC. Even if you used an OTG usb cable.
Windows PC's could be connected via a crossover cable but it is very particular and requires an ethernet port on both machines.
You can connect them via a Network though, like connecting via a Home Group through a wireless connection.
Better still, you can backup your files on a cloud service like Dropbox, Onedrive or Google and then download them to the other machine. If both machines are using Windows 8.1, you can use HP Connect to backup and transfer files.
If you have a usb to micro usb adapter, you can use a pen drive to tranfer files with.
I do not know anything about the magazine articles you are downloading, but if done so via an app in the Windows store, couldnt those be redownloaded anyway without transfering?
IF the tablet is still under warranty and the charging port is loose, you can contact HP Support to see what your options are.
    Hope it helps.

Water got onto screen of ipad, now won't even turn on. Is this fixable and at approximately what cost?

Apple does not repair iPads, but will replace the entire iPad for a flat fee; see the Repair Pricing section here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/service/faq/
There are independent iPad repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "ipad repair".

  • I bought an external hard drive in June (this yr) and it suddenly stopped appearing on the desktop. Disk Utility could see it. It wasn't the cord - now that I've tried that, the ext won't even turn on. I need that data off the drive BADLY! Help!!??

The drive stopped showing up consistently at first, then stopped all together. Disk Utilities could see it, verify it but not repair. I need it backed up. I took it to a local computer shop who tried a different cord. Nothing. When I got home, I read through several support forums dealing with this issue. One said I needed to zap my PRAM on my MacBook. I did so. Now the external won't even turn on! Any hope of getting the data off that drive? It is still under warranty but undoubtedly the firm will NOT attempt to back up the drive before issuing a new one. I downloaded something called TestDisk 6 that another forum suggested but no one offered any clue how to use it. I cannot figure the first thing to do with it! It appears to may be a Windows formatted program, anyway as most of the instructions end in the suffix .exe. I'm at a total loss...both personally as well as having already lost a complete week of business. Any suggestions would be appreciated but please note - I am NOT that computer literate. Just telling me to download something won't help me if I can't figure out what to do once it is downloaded. Also, taking this hard drive apart will void my warranty. Not that that is the biggest of my worries at this point but I wouldn't have the first clue anyway! I live in an area where we have something called Mac Authority in the mall and a Best Buy. Those are the only 2 connections to Mac-related stuff I have access to. Help!!! Please?

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

My Macbook Pro is about 4 to 5 years old.  I've noticed the last few months that speed was becoming much slower.  It slowed to a crawl last week and won't even turn on now.  Where can I take my Macbook Pro for service near Jackson, Michigan?.

Things You Can Do To Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

    If the reset doesn't work:
    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTune (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTune and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTune has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTune.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note: Data will be lost

  • MacPro backed up to Time Machine, added Mac Mini now get "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Jerry Booher's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use." error when Mac Pro tries to back up

MacPro backed up to Time Machine, added Mac Mini now get "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Jerry Booher’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use." error when Mac Pro tries to back up

It is standard Mountain Lion error due to the networking ability which is comparable to wet string. (actually that was lion.. it dried out some with Mountain Lion.. higher in the hills perhaps!!)
    See C12 and C17
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But many people are suffering the same issue..
And the above is even a little out of date.. you might need to do a reset to the TC.

You buy one download and one download only,  it is your responsibility to backup your music.
it has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases
